elcome to the July issue and thank you for picking up a copy of ‘your local community’ magazine.

At the time of writing we are having some great summer sunshine and it’s nice to see so many people out and about enjoying the island while still keeping social distancing practices in place. The beaches have been busy and some favourite picnic sites around the island have been bustling with families and holiday makers making the most of what the island has to offer. Our ‘Dates for your Diary’ section is being slowly reintroduced as a monthly feature, but the events are very much dependent on government guidelines. You will find this section on page 8. If you have an event happening in August, please feel free to email the details to islandmagazines@gmail.com. Inside this issue you will find the latest news and information for your area, our puzzle section, editorials and adverts from local businesses who all appreciate your support when using their services. I hope you all have a great July and hope the sun keeps shining and I look forward to catching up with you again next month.

What’s happening in our area by ‘Local and Vocal’ Lora Peacey-Wilcox BLOOD TESTS Cowes Medical Centre: Yes, they are finally coming! Sometime during the summer. It will be by appointment only, but what a relief. Mon - Fri 7.30-12.30. (Not bank holidays). Keep looking at their website for further details. NEW TELEPHONE SYSTEM: A number of years I have requested this, for the Medical Centre. It will be installed towards the end of June. It is hoped to help the patient experience that we have had so far. I REALLY look forward to this. (Let’s hope we can hear the voice better too!). ALZHEIMER’S CAFE IS BACK: Cowes Football Club will be hosting; plenty of parking and spacing. Reynolds Close (off park road). It will be the 2nd Wednesday of the month from 2-4pm. You will need to book: 220200 where you can leave a message. Thanks to our wonderful volunteers that run this for us. DOG WALKING: Just sometimes life gets complex, and we need to walk dogs when it’s warm. PLEASE think about walking them on the shady part of the pavement or grass. As soon as the temperature rises, I always look for the ‘cool’ spot; my being in the sun can wait! Do you want to be barefoot in a fur coat in 22 degrees?! FUTURE PROOFING: I know I say it a lot, but seeing the budgets and money needed at the IW council, it really is important to look ahead. Think about where you live? Is it manageable on 6

your own? What will you need as you get older? What support do you have around you? SYNCHRONISED LAWN CUTTING: hedge trimming, strimming……. Now there’s a thought! No noise all day, most days……...!! PUBLIC TRANSPORT: I have received concerns about lack of masks on public transport. I can confirm that local firms ARE in line with Dept of Transport legislation. SPEEDWATCH: We are back and have a number of volunteers. My thanks to Paul Taylor who has agreed to be our coordinator. Volunteers seeing if speeding is an issue or perceived! (More volunteers always needed). Please be mindful of your speed as we begin getting back to a ’normal life’! (Whatever that is!!) COVID: Personal Responsibility and Common Sense! As always, you’re my extra eyes and ears: lora08@sky.com

News Report from Cllr Paul Fuller - for Cowes West & Gurnard Tel: 01983 289595/07935 090835 - Email: paulfulleriw@gmail.com Cowes/ Gurnard Seafront Parking Charges Update - It was intended to install meters from the 4th June. Following proposals being opposed by myself, Leader Cllr. Lora Peacey-Wilcox and the Transport portfolio holder, Cllr Phil Jordan proposals are currently ‘on hold’ Whilst I considered figures for revenue creation to be dubious, because officers consider there will be a financial shortfall, I have outlined measures the Council can take to address any perceived shortfall. Cowes Medical Centre - The Centre is due to have a new telephone system installed by July. In addition, the Centres Phlebotomy Service is anticipated for this summer. This service will be by appointment and will be available from 7:30am-12:30pm, Mondays to Fridays. Please visit: www.cowesmedicalcentre. co.uk for details. Road Traffic Orders - Thank you to those residents that I met on site, spoken to and emailed me concerning recent orders that were advertised last month. Details of orders can be found in my June Report. Isle of Wight Cabinet - At Full Council in June, I was appointed as Cabinet Member for Planning and Housing. My priority within my Cabinet position is accelerating the roll out of a new Planning bible for the Isle of Wight. In addition to this the Council’s administration I would like to see the Annual housing figure of 1,000 new homes significantly reduced, whilst prioritising housing that local people can 10

afford whilst at the same time safeguarding our local environment. Cowes Community Bus - Following the Covid lockdown, the Community Bus has an extra bus service which operates on Wednesdays. Thank you, to John, John and the residents through their donations for keeping this important lifeline going! Gurnard Green - Another big thank you. This time to the numerous residents who have helped to litter pick and dispose of rubbish discarded at Gurnard. Although there are more collections during the summer, please use bins that are not overfilled nearby- which attracts foxes and badgers! In the meantime, please let me know when problems arise. Bathing Water, Cowes and Gurnard - Concerns were raised regarding Bathing Water quality. Following reassurance from Southern Water, I contacted the Environment Agency and am advised that bathing water quality meets Excellent Standards. With respect to private outfalls and recent storm water discharges, concerns still continue to be raised. Speedwatch - I have undertaken Speedwatch Training. The first road to be monitored is Pallance Road. If you are interested in volunteering as a member of the local Speedwatch group, please let me know.

News report from Cllr Paul Fuller continued Barbecues - The IW Council are supporting calls to ensure disposable barbecues are properly used and disposed of sensibly. If disposable barbecues can be avoided all together this would be brilliant! If not, once cooled please ensure barbecues and debris are taken home or to a safe place to be disposed of after use. This follows incidents where barbecues were left on beaches and caused burns when trodden on, In addition there were a number of instances of damage. Beach Huts - Over the last few months, I have received a number of enquiries concerning the availability of beach huts. At Gurnard all huts are privately owned, and when sold these can be advertised through Estate Agents. Bucklers View - I met with Southern Housing in June and have been advised that work to extend the complex has been postponed with no start date until at least June 2022. Coastal Path - The Coastal Path between Gurnard and Thorness has reopened following the path being rolled back. Many thanks to the landowners for facilitating this work as I know how important this footpath is!

Green Island Grants - Support is being given to applicants who have applied to the IW Council for Green Island grants following the scheme being scrapped by Government later this summer. If you are a recipient for this grant, and are concerned that work by contractors cannot take place by 31st August, please let me know. Hedgerows - I have continued to receive feedback from residents concerning overgrown trees and hedgerows in Crossfield Avenue, Baring Road, Tuttons Hill, Woodvale Road, Worsley Road and Place Road. This has kept both householders and our district steward busy monitoring overgrowth until bird nesting season ends on 31st July. In the meantime, please let me know any locations that are a problem! Covid Update - With the potential of normality on the horizon, I continue to receive concerns over visitors coming to the Isle of Wight. On a number of issues raised including safeguards in place for port authorities, I have been liaising on these concerns. An update on questions I continue to ask following lockdown appear on my website. paulfullercc.blogspot.com

Criminal Damage - I have requested extra police patrols between Gurnard Marsh and Gurnard Sailing Club. This follows incidents of criminal damage in the area. Please, if you witness any suspicious incident let the police know! 11
