Sharing a home offers a common sense answer to twin challenges facing all communities – finding or keeping a home. BIG Lottery funding has created the opportunity for Islanders to benefit from this simple approach, which has been up and running in other areas for many years. Here, Age UK Isle of Wight is the torchbearer. The charity’s HomeShare project provides a matchmaking service which brings together householders who have spare space and home seekers who are looking for fresh and flexible alternatives to costly rental or purchase. A simple exchange sits at the heart of HomeShare – housing for help. Householders with a spare room and shared facilities open these up for sharers who, in return, provide an agreed amount of assistance every week with routine household tasks (not personal care) and also contribute to living costs. Every home share is different – shaped to the specific needs and expectations of householder and sharer. HomeShare Co-ordinators help them both to negotiate the details of how they will live together, help one another and get along with one another. The Co-ordinators are also responsible for recruiting, thoroughly screening and carefully matching both householders and sharers, for everyone’s peace of mind.
Established schemes, elsewhere in the UK, Europe, and North America where Vermont’s homeshare has been running for 30 years – have proved that home sharing is a good fit for many circumstances. Householders, for instance, may be finding their homes are becoming oversized for their needs – families fly the nest, relationships may have broken down, or support from relatives isn’t an option. Chores may be difficult or simply leaving too little time for enjoyable activities. While downsizing could relieve the pressure, it may also mean departing loved homes and known communities. For home seekers, sharing can provide flexible, short or long-term time-out from rental or purchase. It creates an opportunity to consider options, save for more permanent solutions, wait for social housing to become available (sharing won’t affect ranking on the homefinder register), or even serve out a probationary period for employment before putting down roots. Beyond the obvious practical benefits, home sharing yields many unexpected gains - peace of mind, new friendships, enjoyable company, reduced concerns and the increased happiness that comes from sharing and helping one another out.
To see how it’s already working visit www.homeshareiow.org or catch up with the HomeShare Co-ordinators at various drop-in events over the summer (details on website), or call Age UK IW on 525282.
Welcome to the June issue of Island Magazines and thank you for picking up a copy. Since the last issue we have had some wonderful weather and like many I have been enjoying the great outdoors. The Island looks beautiful bathed in sun and let’s hope these warm days continue.

Picnic and barbecue season is officially here and I’ve been contacted about the amount of litter that has been left after such events. Please either take your rubbish home or find a bin of which there are many about. Nothing looks worse than a beauty spot or beach littered with left over food packets, drink cans, bottles and general waste.

News Report from Cllr Paul Fuller - 74 Wyatts Lane, Cowes, PO31 8QA. Telephone: 01983 289595 - Email: paulfulleriw@gmail.com Planning Updates Watersedge Café - Please note that contrary to the article written within my Annual report, this application was given a planning extension, rather than withdrawn. My apologies for any confusion caused regarding this! This was to allow for the applicant to give further details following issues raised by the Environment Agency and the Council’s Engineer concerning the culvert adjacent. In addition to this addendum, a new street scene image from Shore Road features online: For further information please visit: www.iwight.com/ planning/AppDetails3.aspx?frmId=33533. Planning Officers have advised this new information does not need to be re-publicised, as they consider this alters the proposed development. Bakehouse Development for 2 houses behind Worsley Road, with access from Tuttons Hill I’ve spoken to Planning Officers who advise they were due to REFUSE this application. Officers felt the design, size and scale of the proposed two properties would have an impact upon the character of the Jordan Valley and agreed with Gurnard Parish Council that proposals were contrary to policies within Gurnard’s Neighbourhood Plan. Subsequently, plans have been withdrawn. Place Road- Phase Four. Construction of 21 dwellings. A final letterdrop took place to 30 households on the western side of Place Road. Alongside Phases 2 and 3 proposals are being considered by Planning Officers. The Range - I am advised that issues associated with security lighting and its impact upon neighbours has been resolved. This now allows for focus on the conditioned pedestrian refuge, which I continue to pursue.
Cold Calling, Scams and Security - In response to calls Trading Standards have confirmed attendance at the next Coffee & Chat Morning at All Saints Church, Gurnard alongside myself and the police. The next drop-in takes place 10:15-11:30am on Thursday 26th June at the Church. The police also advise residents to be vigilant in ensuring doors are securely locked to reduce the number of walk in opportunistic burglaries which occurs during the summer. Dog Poo - Poo and dogs not on leads, continue to be an issue. Please note, owners have a responsibility to ensure dogs are kept ‘under control’ in public areas. In the meantime, please continue to report incidents to both myself, and Island Roads (Please call 01983 822440- 24hrs) who generally will pick up poo within hours of this being reported. Annual Report - My Annual Report has been distributed and provides an update on what I have been doing since April 2017. If you have not received yours please let me know. Village Tidy Up -Thank you so much to the volunteers who took place in the most recent village tidy-up in Gurnard, where more than 40 sacks were filled by the 50 residents who took part! Many thanks particularly to stalwart Parish Councillors Marie Bugden, Jane McKean and Ginnie Orrey for organising these and previous events in the village. Gurnard Pines - I continue to receive calls from residents of Gurnard Pines concerned by the introduction of new fees for water and electricity. This is particularly relevant to those who live as ‘residents’ within this holiday park.
News Report from Cllr Paul Fuller continued As a consequence unlike householders who have the ability to shop around for the best energy deals, owners and tenants have very limited rights. These matters are being taken up on resident’s behalf. Lynnbottom and Afton Tips for Tips - The IW Council received negative feedback concerning its summer opening times at both Lynnbottom and Afton Civic Amenity Site. This is as a consequence of congestion outside both sites particularly Briddlesford Road. Following the response concerning this, a review will take place. Road Resurfacing Programme: Cowes West and Gurnard (April-October). Island Roads have programmed the following works to take place before October: Carriageways: Worsley Road, Tuttons Hill. Drainage: Marsh Road. Footways: Place Road, Park Road (Crescent), Debourne Close, Magdalen Crescent, Guppy Close, Churchill Road, Jordan Close, Woodvale Road, Woodvale Close, Gurnard Heights I’ve contacted Island Roads concerning pot holes (Park Road), broken fences and overgrowing hedgerows (Cockleton Lane), dog poo removal (Princes Esplanade), Flytipping (Marsh Road), Man Hole covers and damaged grass verges (Worsley Road), road surface deterioration (Crossfield Avenue) access issues (King James’ Close/ Westwood Close) and surface water drainage (Ward Avenue)
Parking - Complaints were received concerning parked vehicles blocking the ‘apron’ of driveways. Following complaints, this is a matter that I am addressing through parking services with residents affected. In the meantime, with parking at a premium please park sensitively! Marine Management Organisation - A meeting has taken place between residents and the Marine Management Organisation. The MMO relayed that anything taken out or put into the marine environment generally requires permission. Please visit: www. gov.uk/government/organisations/marinemanagement-organisation. Cash Machine Update - Town Councillors are chasing up Natwest Bank for an operational cash machine, following the ATM being out of service. Please note that building contractors are not responsible for these problems! In the meantime, Sainsbury’s has two cash points located outside their store, whilst there is also a free cash point at the new Central Convenience Store at the other end of the High Street next to Benzies.

Our vision is to involve as many people in the community as possible, boosting their confidence and communication abilities whilst entertaining our audience, and promoting many Island charities and local businesses. Vectis Radio is based in the heart of the community it serves - The Riverside Centre, Newport. Our volunteer presenters are all ordinary local people whose passion for radio brings the station alive. Vectis Radio is designed to be ‘Radio Therapy’ involving people all ages and abilities and giving them the chance to broadcast in their own style. Vectis Radio was founded by Ian Mac in January 2010. In 2012 we launched a teaching programme aimed at young people between the ages of 11 – 19 (up to 25 for
those with additional needs), reshaping it in 2013 as ‘The 4Ps Project’ which covers the main four ingredients of radio - Presenting, Producing Podcasting and Promoting – whose major outcome is the enhancement of confidence and communication skills. In 2017 Vectis Radio became a Community Interest Company and the station began broadcasting on FM 104.6 on November 4th 2017.
