Island Hares Once again Island Magazines is thrilled to be able to feature such an amazing photo on the front cover and if you haven’t already guessed the photographer is of course ‘Hare Whisperer’ Nick Edwards. Nick isn’t just known on the Island for his passion of these mesmerising animals as earlier this year another of his amazing hare photographs made him a finalist in the huge and prestigious Sony World Photography Awards 2019. Out of over 326,000 entries from 196 countries, Nicks Island hares were chosen to be in the final selection, handbook and exhibition! What an achievement and well done Nick. They say that all good things come to those who wait and you will often find Nick waiting patiently at dusk and dawn in various locations across the Island ready to capture the hares in their natural surroundings. He is such a regular visitor to these locations that it almost seems on some occasions that the hares are waiting for him to give him exactly what he wants and this month’s front cover star certainly didn’t disappoint with this pose!! Hares aren’t the only topic of Nick’s amazing photography skills and his website www.wightseen.co.uk is home to his collection of pictures of varied subjects captured here on our beautiful Island. His prints are also available to purchase via Available Light Gallery in St Thomas Square, Newport.

Another month has flown by and here we are with the June issue. As I write this introduction the sun is shining and I really hope that June is the start of the summer season and we get to enjoy many more sunny days here on the Island. I have already had my first picnic of the year at the beach, it was lovely and sunny one moment and the next it was raining, thankfully not heavy but I was in a difficult conundrum; do I pack up and run to the car as quickly as I could or do I ride it out and get wet. Well, I did the latter but after 20 minutes I gave up! This months front cover is amazing and all thanks to local photographer Nick Edwards. You can read all about Nicks passion on page 2. Keeping on the wildlife theme, on the back cover you can read all about helping to save hedgehogs here on the Island. June is a busy month with events happening across the Island and you will find our ‘Dates for your Diary’ on pages 8, 9 and 10 and don’t forget Father’s Day is on Sunday 16th June. I hope you all have a great month and I look forward to catching up with you soon.

Handmade and bespoke are two words that describe some of the beautiful jewellery made by I.H. Jewellery. Based locally, owner Ian found his passion for jewellery making back in 1996 and then spent a few years obtaining diplomas in fine jewellery and stone setting. Ian works mainly in silver but commissions can be produced in 9 and 18 carat gold. He has thrown out the theory that handmade is far too expensive and has made some eye catching silver stud earrings starting at just £16. These will make beautiful gifts for that special someone and throughout his collection of handmade lockets, pendants and rings you will find affordable pieces to suit all budgets. He believes everyone should be able to wear beautiful jewellery and his online shop is open to everyone to browse to look for that perfect piece and if you have a particular item or idea you would like lovingly created then a phone call to Ian is a must. Visit the website at www.ihjewellery.co.uk and see for yourself the outstanding range and quality of products Ian has created. Please also see his main advert for more information. 4

What’s happening in our area by ‘Local and Vocal’ Lora Peacey-Wilcox FREEMASONS: They receive quite a lot of negativity. However, I attended their Charity presentation evening. This consisted of supporting some of our most precious voluntary groups. A total in excess of £50K was given to local Island charities. From supporting local families with children suffering from cancer, keeping 2 critical teams available for air ambulance, new computers for Shanklin Youth Club, enabling blood tests for prostate cancer, pop up soup kitchen helping to feed homeless to the Daisy bus, 10,000 trips a year assisting those with cancer and treatment. Well done to all of the chaps (supported by wives) who continually raise funds to keep our Island volunteers working for us! THE TIP: As many of you know, the tip now does not open till 10.00am. Many people are attending earlier in the hope to get in; this is causing real issues with traffic build up. There is enforcement if you arrive early. Generally the busiest time is 10-11am. The tip is open SEVEN days a week 10 - 6pm. If you are throwing away FRIDGES OR FREEZERS, ensure they are clean of food, if not you may not be allowed to throw! GARDEN WASTE BINS: There are now over 6,500 of us using the service. It really makes me keep on top of the garden, and glory be...no more tip runs! Look on line for details: wight.com ASSISTED COLLECTIONS: If you are struggling and have a medical condition that needs assisted collections again, contact team above. 6

OLD CLOTHES: providing they are not oil stained/ contaminated, ALL old and ripped clothing can be recycled on recycling day. Place in a clear or white bag. Super! WALK THE WIGHT: An enormous well done to all those that took part, or helped in some way. It was super to see so many of you as I welcomed you at Carisbrooke. Continued success to Mountbatten. THE BIG LUNCH: Northwood Park are hosting this event. Bring a picnic or purchase from WI ladies, bake a cake or quiche, and children invited to bake too. The dog show, music, stalls, all at NORTHWOOD PARK SUNDAY 2nd JUNE! I hope to see you there. HEDGES: Well done and thanks to those of you who have cut back, lowered or taken out critical hedges to allow better visibility. So much safer for everyone, especially when there are no pavements. Don’t forget, its nesting season so no more cutting till August. (so i’m told) CITIZENS ADVICE: If you are struggling financially, at work, home, THERE are MANY organisations out there that can help you. The Island has a group for everything and every issue. DON’T get yourself in a state, seek advice. www.citizensadviceiw.org.uk and islehelp.me SPEEDING: I recently came home to a dead cat on my drive. The impact was horrendous. No one should have to witness that. Despite the SLOW sign on the road, someone obviously was really speeding. They didn’t continued over the page

FREE COFFEE MORNING: (Donations gratefully received). Also Plant and Garden sale... cannot wait to purchase some new plants! Northwood Cemetery. 7th June 10.30am-12noon see you there. FABULOUS FLOWER WALK: 16th June. 10.30am Meet outside the Chapel. Enjoy. NEW MAYOR FOR COWES: Well, that is me! My sincere thanks to Cllr Paul Fuller who was my predecessor, and who works hard for residents of Cowes. I welcome Cllr Paul Bertie as my deputy. My thanks to all fellow town councillors who unanimously supported my appointment. I will continue to work hard for the people of Cowes, with support from town councillors, to whom I am indebted for their HUGE contributions working for free, for the town. News Report from Cllr Paul Fuller - 45 Oxford Street, Northwood, PO31 8PT. Telephone: 01983 289595 - Email: paulfulleriw@gmail.com Rubbish - I received numerous complaints concerning the volume of rubbish discarded at litter bins (particularly Gurnard Green), during Easter.

In recent months cold callers have attempted to sell services across the Island. I have requested an updated supply of ‘No Cold Calling’ stickers from Environmental Health. These will be posted to residents once received. NB: No Cold Calling does not apply to religious or political canvassers.

This was an issue throughout the Island during the weekend, and due to the fact that the weekend fell late, it was hot, and the same regime was not as regular as it is during the summer holidays. A response to questions put Town and Parish Council Co-options - Thank you to all residents who applied to both to the Director can be viewed on my website. Cowes Town Council and Gurnard Parish In the meantime, I spoke to the Council Leader Council. concerning the prospect of savings from the PFI contract with Island Roads. In response, he Successfully co-opted was Cllrs. Matt Smith, agreed that seafront bins would be emptied at Jan Williams and Nikki Wood to Gurnard the current frequency, and that the IW Council Parish Council and Cllrs Ken Gilpin and John ‘Jock’ Rafferty to the Cowes Medina Ward of were only considering reducing emptying Cowes Town Council. frequencies where demand was low. More Rubbish… I am advised another reason for overfilled bins, was due to weekend visitors leaving their household rubbish in and around adjacent bins. If you are a regular visitor, please visit www.iwight/waste or call 01983 823777 to subscribe to the Collection Plus service. This enables residents to have bins emptied without placing bins on the kerbside. This costs £60 per year, and free for residents with medical/ mobility needs. In addition, Amey/ The IW Council also has a garden waste collection service. This fortnightly collection costs £60 per year and saves the stress of the Sunday trip to the tip… Neighbourhood Watch/ Police Request Once the warm weather and sunshine appears, I receive requests from the police to let residents know not to leave sheds and household doors unlocked as opportunistic burglaries can and do happen! 14

As IW Councillor, I very much look forward to working with and supporting our new local councillors. Parking - I’ve received a number of requests for parking restrictions in Worsley Road. When last considered by Island Roads/ IW Council three years ago, no further action was taken due to there not being sufficient evidence of incidents, health and safety concerns, or need. Since then, with new developments at Glen Place, Oaklands View, a pending planning application to expand Bucklers View and feedback from businesses, residents and the Community Bus, I will be consulting with residents by way of a drop and collect questionnaire. This will provide evidence to consider how best to proceed. I hope to feedback before the end of summer…

News report from Cllr Paul Fuller Cowes Parking Order Update - Meanwhile, delays on implementation of the Cowes Parking Order continues! When raised with the IW Council, I was advised that officers will be drafted from Hampshire County Council to help, and although Cowes is of priority, the Council are unable to confirm their timeframe. As residents know I continue to persevere on this priority. Annual Report - Despite my enthusiasm wanting to discuss parking, highways, planning, waste and dog dirt within delivery of my report, the one issue people wanted to discuss was Brexit or lack of it! It is very clear during feedback that faith in politicians seem at an all-time low following resident’s frustration in getting on with the UK’s withdrawal from the European Union. This is very understandable given parliamentarians have now had two years to agree a deal..

Save our Hedgehogs Isle of Wight We are hedgehog carers for the island and our work involves offering advice, support and information to the public and we also take in injured or sick hedgehogs to help them recover before releasing them back to the wild. Hedgehogs are at threat of extinction with numbers declining rapidly so helping everyone be more aware is really important. If you want to encourage hedgehogs into your garden make sure you have small square entry points, always have water available and you can provide dog or cat biscuits too. If you think a hedgehog is in trouble. Place in a light coloured towel in a high sided box and call Jacquie or Zoe on 01983 613145 who will offer the advice you need. Some key things to be aware of. If a Hedgehog is seen in the daylight it might be in trouble, as they are nocturnal animals. They might be a new mother moving a nest especially if she has been disturbed. Watch for signs she is moving her nest. If not, it probably needs checking over. In the autumn the juvenile’s born will likely be too small to hibernate so they will need to come to us for the winter. Be careful when clearing your garden too as we see many strimming injuries, always feel around before gardening. If there is obvious injury or you are just not sure always call us so we will take them in. We visit vets if need be and rehabilitate them often releasing them back to where they were found. We attend events across the island and take hedgehogs along for people to see and our Facebook page has lots of helpful hints and tips and is the place where we provide updates of the hedgehogs we have looked after.
