elcome to the June issue and near enough the halfway point of the year... and what a year it’s been!

Do you feel life is slowly returning to normal with the easing of lockdown? Or are you finding it hard to remember exactly what ‘normal’ life was? There is no doubt that many things have changed in our lives over the last 15 months, some good and some bad. Many people have embraced the time by learning new skills and have seen life through different lenses but how many of these changes are we going to continue with when we completely move out of lockdown. Many of us our re-evaluating what is really important and what isn’t. Local elections are finally over and congratulations to all those that were elected and re-elected. You will be glad to hear that both Lora Peacey-Wilcox and Paul Fuller are continuing with their monthly news reports in the magazine. We have some great local businesses advertising with us who will appreciate you using their services and please let them know you saw their advert here. The weather hasn’t been brilliant so far but let’s hope that is destined to change. Whether you are sitting indoors while it rains or sitting on the beach soaking up the sun you can enjoy our puzzle section on pages 10 and 11. I hope you have a great June and I look forward to catching up with you again next month.

What’s happening in our area by ‘Local and Vocal’ Lora Peacey-Wilcox ELECTION! I won. My utter, sincere thanks to all those that have supported me on this process for over 22 years! Yes, it has been that long…! As usual, many chose not to come out and vote, so a poor turnout. My supporters know that I am SO VERY grateful to you all, for the hand holding (literal of course), cake, words of encouragement, phone calls and messages. You know who you are. THANK YOU.XX

am liaising with an IWC chap who has far greater knowledge. I will keep you up-dated, as its rapid chargers that are needed and older ones need to be replaced or at least upgraded.

TRAFFIC REGULATION ORDERS: Well, just when we are all adjusting to new positions and titles on the council and dealing with a multitude of other important issues, it is decided to bring forward the 9-year issues (in some cases) of traffic orders. You will see them put on lampposts in your area. PLEASE, PLEASE email the town council and your IW Cllr so they know your views AND email the PFI team and IWC. Do not be complacent! Please look and have your say.

OBSTRUCTIONS ON PAVEMENTS: Please can I remind you to be MINDFUL when obstructing pave-ments. We have a number of elderly and partially sighted residents who are not only finding it very difficult to get around Cowes, but are also not confident following being inside during the pandemic. Oh, and re-move your bins. Please think!

PLANNING APPLICATIONS: Have increased greatly. Please look at applications. Your neighbours could be planning something at any time, please keep vigilant and inform Cowes Town Council and IW Coun-cillors of your concerns. ELECTRIC CHARGING POINTS: Asked about this at the polling station. It’s a tad more complicated than I thought……organisations own the points; complicated when there are multi groups! None of which I have ever heard of. I 4

ARCTIC PARK AREA: Sadly, there appears to be some issues over the use of this area. Sad, as this could have been a nice area. I will contact the police with the issues raised.

TRIM YOUR BUSHES: I use the word trim because we have beautiful birdies nesting. Just carefully cut out those branches that would hurt a child in a pram or older person not being able to see too well. MEANWHILE, thanks for getting in touch, thanks for your support. As always YOU are my extra eyes and ears around the Island. Email is by far the best way of contacting me: lora08@sky. com

Refresh and Update Painting and decorating isn’t just a job to Simon MAC… since first starting in 1980 Simon has come to realise that it is in his blood and this is clearly shown in the high standard finish of his work. His services have been used in private houses, commercial shops, B&B’s, property management companies, estate agents, village halls and even a Dutch barge moored in Bembridge. Simon believes in treating each home or business that he works in with respect and believes that preparation is vital so with all woodwork and walls he always ensures he washes them down using sugar-soap, & all exterior masonry is soft washed by a local business. No Job is too big or too small and Simon has many returning customers and here is what a few of them have said about him. “Simon is one of the most trustworthy and Courteous tradesmen we have dealt with”. “He is a quality tradesman who is very reliable and can be counted on to quote for work and give a date when it can be done. He is cheerful and a good communicator, always letting us know what’s going on”. “Simon’s work is consistently of a very high standard. He is reliable, polite and courteous. In fact, we would be very reluctant to use another decorator”.

News Report from Cllr Paul Fuller - 45 Oxford Street, Northwood, PO31 8PT. Telephone: 01983 289595 - Email: paulfulleriw@gmail.com Surgeries - With the Governments Covid Roadmap evolving from this month I am hopeful that Surgeries will revert back to normal. Because of revised opening hours for venues, when there is more clarity surgeries will be promoted on paulfullercc. blogspot.com and Town Council/ Parish Council notice boards. Election Update - I feel privileged to be reelected to serve our community. The final results were confirmed as: PAUL FULLER (IND) 1101 (77.4%) TIM JEFFERYS (CON) 208 (14.6%) JOSH POINTING (LAB) 114 (8.0%) Thank you to everyone who took the time to vote, listen to candidates and chatted on the doorstep or when leaving the polling station. Please remember, I am here to serve you so don’t hesitate to let me know if I can offer support. Cowes Medical Centre - I’ve been working with residents and feeding back issues to Cowes Medical Centre following complaints over the non-response from telephone calls. The Centre has advised me that patient requests have increased at a time when the Centre is providing extra support for covid vaccinations. With respect to those residents unable to use e-consult, the centre advises: “Our suggestion would be for patients, or their support, to post a letter through our letter box, and we will respond to that based on the clinical urgency, but in a timely way”. In the meantime the Practice advises that a new phone system is being installed… In the meantime, please let me know if you are experiencing difficulties. 12

Gurnard Pumping Station Works - A request was made to Southern Water to repaint their pumping station on Princes Esplanade and to resolve the odour emitted from the pumping station. In response, contractors have been on site to replace and upgrade the pipework nearby, following ongoing rag/ textile and fat damage caused by residents inappropriately disposing of items. It goes without saying, but notwithstanding this Southern Water are appealing to residents to avoid disposing of wet wipes, sanitary towels, cotton buds etc. in the toilet. With respect to water quality at Gurnard, Southern Water has advised that Water is tested ‘at least every week’ by the Environment Agency and has been classified as ‘Excellent’ for the past four years. Southern Water adds that ‘the data does not support any water quality problems in Gurnard, which causes frustration as unfounded rumours will negatively affect business and amenity in the area. Disabled Bays - I have received a request from a resident concerning motorists parking in disabled bays. Please note, bays are requested to support residents who find it difficult or painful to walk any distance. For able bodied motorists to use bays when it is unnecessary to do so often will have an adverse impact on residents. Restart Grants: Support for Local Businesses - The IW Council are facilitating Government Restart Grants to continued over the page

News report from Cllr Paul Fuller continued support small businesses impacted by the Covid pandemic. For details please visit: www.iow.gov.uk/news/First-businessesreceive-Restart-Grants Cowes Community Bus - Following the recent pandemic and subsequent fall in the number of passengers using the Community Bus, I understand that the Isle of Wight Community Bus made a financial loss for last year. With respect to this, I am discussing options with Town and Parish Councils on safeguarding this important lifeline to so many people. Roundhouse junction: Signage for local shops? - Following the reopening of shops and local businesses after Lockdown, I have requested signage at the Roundhouse Junction highlighting ‘Village Shops and Pub’. This I am hopeful will encourage motorists driving into Cowes to leave the main road to come into Gurnard. Gurnard Green - Notices have been placed on IW Council litter bins on Gurnard Green requesting residents to please not overfill bins, this follows complaints regarding badgers and foxes emptying and scattering contents across the green and beach. Planning Applications• Sunnycott Caravan Park, Rew Street. Extension of 8 units of accommodation: REFUSED • 63 Solent View Road. Replacement Dwelling: APPLICATION MODIFIED • Land adjacent to the Stables, Woodvale Road. Proposed Dwelling: REFUSED. • The Dottens. Following a previous refusal, a revised Planning Application is pending.

Transport Matters • Gurnard/Cowes Seafront Charges: I have requested these are put on hold, with a view to scrapping proposals. • Escooters: I have requested a meeting to discuss safety concerns, whilst the bay in Terminus Road was relocated. • Highway Vehicle Repairs. These have been reported to Island Roads, the police and the Council’s Community Safety Officer. • 20’s Plenty: A request has been made to roll out an initiative to slow traffic in the Crossfield Estate and Gurnard. Please let me know your thoughts! • Carriageway Resurfacing: is planned for Moorgreen Road and Rolls Hill in June; Thetis Road and Bellevue Road in October and Church Road, Cowes and Princes Street in November. • With reference to this, I have requested Worsley Road and Crossfield Avenue are given priority and monitored given their omission. • Traffic Orders: These are due to be consulted upon next month. I will report once I know more.

The Friends of St Mary’s Need Your Help By Lesley Myland Here we are approaching a second summer of challenging circumstances but the Friends of St Mary’s continue to provide a retail service which the staff at the Trust clearly appreciate. They give us a great deal of support and encouragement which helps to keep us going. In spite of being in a rather reduced situation, we are carrying on and planning for opening up a little more widely as soon as we can. We have hopes of re-opening in the Ryde Wellbeing Centre and although it will not be for a while yet, we hope to resume our trolley service to the wards. We know how much this is missed and are working on an ordering service which we hope will bridge the gap in the meantime. The Charity will soon be preparing to ask hospital staff to consider how we can help them again in 2021 from the ‘Friends Fund`. We are pleased to say that we have many donations from patients who have been cared for at St Mary’s during the pandemic crisis and we have been greatly moved by that, but we do need to get fundraising again, particularly as we do not have the range of retail services that we did have supporting our funds. Recently we were overwhelmed by a gesture from a member of St Mary’s pathology staff, Jussna Mateen. She arranged for her colleagues to be able to take home curry dishes made by her family’s restaurant, Spice Central in Cowes. Proceeds from the event which amounted to well over £1,000 were donated to the Friends. The occasion marked the end of Ramadan which is regarded as a charitable month and we were honoured to be included in this way. A huge thank you to Jussna and her family who worked hard to make everything go so well and I can personally say that the food was fantastic!
