Welcome to the March issue of Island Magazines. March signifies the start of Spring and lets hope we start seeing some better weather, perhaps even some sunshine! It looks set to be a busy month with plenty happening across the island and you can find details of events listed in the ‘Dates for your Diary’ section on pages 6 and 7. On Sunday 11th March is Mothering Sunday and towards the end of the month on the 30th is the start of Easter. Unfortunately we lose an hour of well earned sleep in March as the clocks go forward the last Sunday of the month, this being the 25th but on the other hand we will start to see the lighter evenings which is always something to be cheerful about.

News Report from Cllr Paul Fuller - 74 Wyatts Lane, Cowes, PO31 8QA. Telephone: 01983 289595 - Email: paulfulleriw@gmail.com Gurnard Primary School - I understand there are proposals to redevelop the existing school site. On this subject, I understand proposals will be shared at a public meeting scheduled in the coming weeks. Cowes Medical Centre - Last month the Medical Centre supported residents registering for online services. This will improve booking appointments, ordering repeat prescriptions and providing access to your GP health record. For information about registering, please contact 295251. Following demand, Information leaflets are available from Cowes Medical Centre (next to the repeat prescription slot at the reception), Cowes Library and Gurnard Press. If you have not yet received yours, or am unable to collect the 8 page booklet, please let me know! Police Matters - The next police surgeries take place: 4:30-6pm, Thursday 1st March, Costa, High Street, Cowes. 4:30-6pm, Friday 23rd March, Costa, High Street, Cowes 4:30-6pm, Saturday 24th March, Coffee Shop, The Range, Place Road, Cowes. I have requested a meeting to take place with the police to address some concerns raised by residents. Traffic and Parking - Thank you to residents who contacted me concerning recent parking orders proposed for the Park Road/ Parklands Avenue junction and outside Cowes Enterprise College and Gurnard Primary Schools.
In addition, I’ve received feedback concerning proposed ‘improvements’ to St. Mary’s Roundabout. It is suggested this government grant funded scheme will commence this summer. Details can be found at: www.scribd.com/ document/369807530/St-Mary-s-JunctionImprovement-Phasing-Plan#from_embed Dog Mess - Dog mess continues to be a problem in Baring Road, Tuttons Hill and Princes/ Egypt Esplanade. Incidents can be reported direct to Island Roads by calling 01983 822440 (24-hour helpline) or emailing info@islandroads.com, (please copy me in!). If there is a persistent problem please let me know, and I can ensure further action is pursued through our Environment Officer. Fly-tipping, Cross Street (St Mary’s Road) Car Park - Following regular incidents of fly-tipping and broken glass discarded by residents and businesses, the IW Council has taken away the recycling bins from the car park. Please note, much of the domestic items regularly left, can and will be taken away as part of Amey/ The IW Council’s kerbside collection. Black (Non-Recyclable) General Waste - I continue to receive calls concerning what items can be recycled. Please note the only items that should be deposited in the Black General Waste bins are as follows: Nappies and Sanitary Products, Plasters and Dressings, Cling Film, Bubble wrap, Animal Waste, Cold Ash, Foil pet food pouches, Blister strips from pill packets, Polystyrene, Sweet and Crisp Wrappers and
News Report from Cllr Paul Fuller continued Contaminated with food/oil recyclables (i.e pizza boxes etc) Cowes Floating Bridge - The Floating Bridge continues to absorb a considerable amount of my time. The IW Council’s Scrutiny Committee in January resolved to defer the report. This was to allow time for members to read associated documents, respond to relevant outstanding questions and issues, and then feedback recommendations. In the meantime, tests continue to take place to address concerns over the impact of the chains depth in the river and the noise linked with new crossing. Full Council. - At Full Council, I voted against freezing IW Councillors allowances believing (like Town and Parish Councillors) that reflecting austerity this role should mirror a voluntary unpaid position. This is particularly relevant as allowances are not means tested.
This follows strongly held views of teenagers and members of the Youth Council who approached me on this subject. In the meantime, let me know your views on decisions I take on our communities behalf. If you think I get things wrong, please tell me! No Cold Calling I am expecting a fresh delivery of No Cold Calling stickers from Trading Standards. Please let me know if you require one for your home.

What’s happening in our area by ‘Local and Vocal’ Lora Peacey-Wilcox RESIDENT PARKING ZONES: The consultation is now live. One is the IW Councils parking strategy and the other is IW Resident Parking Zone consultation which ends at 5pm on Fri. 16th March. Hopefully you can navigate around the iwight.com website to find it! Good luck. NEWPORT TRAFFIC PLANS: This affects anyone that uses St. Marys roundabout. I STRONGLY urge you to look at the website and email: highways-pif@iow.gov.uk with your thoughts and concerns. I have to say, traffic lights on that roundabout seems hideous! RUBBISH AROUND: I received so many emails with residents concerned about rubbish. IF rubbish is left around after bin collecting day and the rubbish is caused by the bags, AMEY the new contractors ARE responsible for making it clean. All trucks have CCTV so details can be chased up and actioned. ST. MARYS CAR PARK/CROSS ST: Did you know this area is the worse place on the Island for dumping of rubbish? As it is a constant problem with people constantly abusing the area, Amey has decided to remove the bins. FRIENDS OF NORTHWOOD CEMETERY: 10th Anniversary celebrations Saturday 31st March. See you there around 12noon!

I have to say, like others, it is rather tiring, frustrating, annoying and inconvenient never knowing when and if its going to run. I fear, this will only get worse not better. My sincere thanks to the Staff that have battled on during this fiasco. AGE FRIENDLY ISLAND: It was good to meet up with many of you at the community club, and coming up with solutions to problems in cowes around transport and the medical centre. The next meeting open to all is: Thursday 21st June 2-4pm at the community club. KEEP YOUR DOGS ON LEADS: It is the law. Particularly when you are close to roads, and in the Cemetery! And clean up after your pooch! If you don’t, before much longer, legislation ‘may’ be brought in for total bans (in cemeteries...you’ve been warned.

Age UK Isle of Wight; Helping you stay safe and comfortable in your own home. The Age UK Isle of Wight Handyperson Service has been helping island residents to live independently in their own homes for more than 5 years. As of 31st March 2018 the Handyperson service is changing, and will no longer be commissioned by IW Council to provide free labour for small jobs. This loss of funding means that from 1st April, all handyperson services supplied by Age UK IW will be charged for, under their Home Safe Service. However, recognising the continued need for this vital service in our communities, the charity is committed to providing an outstanding service at a reasonable price. Our staff are employed by Age UK IW, they have a wealth of experience and knowledge, are reliable and trustworthy, and have full DBS checks and insurance. As well as the peace of mind you will get from using trusted tradespeople you’ll also be supporting a vital local charity. Any profits from the Home Safe Service go directly to helping provide Age UK Isle of Wight’s free charitable services.
Our Home Safe team can help you with:
• Advice on home safety adaptations • Fitting doorbells & external key safes • Installing grab rails & other adaptations, both internal & external • Installing smoke alarms & carbon monoxide detectors • Fitting locks & security chains • Fitting plug sockets & light fixtures (and other minor electrical jobs) • Power washing paths, patios & driveways • Moving & assembling furniture, flat-pack, etc • Building steps & ramps • Hanging shelving, picture frames, mirrors, blinds & curtain rails • Fence & gate repairs • Minor carpentry & plumbing work • Low-level guttering maintenance & clearing • General household repairs This list is by no means exhaustive and no job is too small, if it’s important to you, it’s important to us. We don’t charge for call-outs and offer a very competitive hourly rate, plus you can have any mix of jobs in one visit. The Home Safe Service is available to all adults over 18, living on the Isle of Wight.
