A very warm welcome to the March issue of Island Magazines and thank you for picking up a copy. It looks set to be a busy month, starting with Shrove Tuesday on the 5th and then Mother’s Day, and don’t forget the clocks go forward one hour on the last Sunday of the month. Although we lose a valuable hour in bed we will start seeing lighter evenings. Our ‘Dates for your Diary’ on pages 12 and 13 are packed full with events happening across the island during March. I always like to give a small mention about the weather but I’m really at a loss of what to say this time except did you enjoy the small scattering of snow we had a few weeks back and do you think we can expect to see more of it like we did in March last year or shall we keep our fingers crossed that the cold weather has been and gone. I hope you enjoy this issue and please keep using the services or our advertisers and remember to tell them you saw them advertised here. I hope you all have a great month and I look forward to catching up with you again soon.

News Report from Cllr Paul Fuller - 74 Wyatts Lane, Cowes, PO31 8QA. Telephone: 01983 289595 - Email: paulfulleriw@gmail.com Access to Gurnard’s Secret Beach - Following a resident falling on the old slipway/ coastal defence built in the early 1980’s, the IW Council closed beach access to the beach in January. Although the IW Council has limited jurisdiction for Shore Path or the beach, it (I’m told) has a duty of care to access the beach overseen on behalf of the Crown Estate.

From my perspective, I took advantage to seek clarity on finalising details of the Cowes Traffic Order undertaken last year. In response, Cllr Ian Ward highlighted this was a priority with staff being recruited to address delays implementing proposals. Of note is the appointment of a Director to oversee this.

Of interest were proposals to support regeneration alongside consideration for Since receiving complaints from myself and a new (toll) Medina Crossing. In addition, residents the Council has re-opened access via concerns were made regarding the IW sleepers and south east of the Slipway. In the Council’s Parking Review. In light of feedback, meantime, many thanks to those half a dozen I consider it unlikely the more controversial residents who have willingly volunteered aspects of the review will be implemented in support to improve access to this very special full. area. If you are interested please let me know! News report from Cllr Paul Fuller I will be requesting feedback from Local Council colleagues and stakeholders to attend this meeting. Watch House Shelter, The Parade, Cowes - Last year, Cowes Town Council agreed to fund repairs to the shelter following the IW Council considering its removal last year. Whilst awaiting repairs, further damage and movement has occurred. In the meantime, the shelter’s condition is being monitored, and I remain hopeful repairs can start sooner rather than later! Bucklers View proposed extension - Southern Housing called a Pre-Planning Exhibition last month to seek feedback on proposals to increase the level of sheltered accommodation by 12 new units. Further details on feedback and the timescale for the Planning Application will be provided in my next report. Cold Calling - Please note that Cowes, Gurnard and Northwood are no cold calling zones. In light of this, no uninvited callers should be selling their wares or services at your door. If you receive a call from callers or require stickers please let me know! Alternatively, Trading Standards can be contacted on: (01983) 823371. Speeding Traffic, Church Road, Gurnard - I have received a request from a resident for additional speed restriction measures in Church Road. Although existing parking arrangements do help to reduce the speed of traffic, there remains concerns that following incidents with animals being hit by cars that the speed of vehicles, and the lack of attention shown by motorists that a problem exists. Please let me know your thoughts!!

Full Council. Following the high priority, external and cross-party support to Children’s Services, the IW Council received a ‘Good’ rating from OFSTED. This is strong testament to the Island’s dedicated team of officers.

A Journey of Discovery for Everyone by Nickie Short My name is Nickie Short and I teach yoga on the Isle of Wight. I have lived on the Island for 16 years with my family and I love dog walking, swimming in the sea and sharing this wonderful part of the world with my husband and friends. Since leaving school I have spent 30 plus years working with people with a wide range of physical and mental health problems, learning difficulties, physical disabilities and those who are generally finding life challenging. I have been practising yoga for 30 years and teaching for almost 20. When working with groups or individuals I take time to determine where they are now, where they want to be and how helping them work through the challenges from A to B. Although everyone is different there are many common themes: people lack awareness of their physical needs, lack self confidence, want to find some ‘peace’ or contentment, want to feel less stressed, get anxious, experience pain (physical and emotional) and lack of sleep to varying degrees. I currently run teacher training courses for yoga teachers, hold regular retreats, run weekly general classes on the Island, carry out regular one2one appointments and teach yoga for recovery for individuals and organisations.

YOGA a potential journey of discovery for everyone WEEKLY CLASSES IN RYDE, VENTNOR & NEWPORT General classes, back care, support for anyone affected by cancer, relaxation and breathing for stress and anxiety, working with the energy centres.
