Catching Our Breath By Jessica Garbett Yoga Therapist – Yinspire Yoga Therapy “I’ve been so busy, I just need to catch my breath” How often do we find ourselves saying that or something similar? We live in a society which is increasingly always on, competitive and demanding – even on our quiet Island. Our nervous system hasn’t evolved to handle this pace of life – our threat response system treats the sound of a text message the same way as the roar of an attacking animal, and respond to someone cutting in on us at the traffic lights the same way as a threat on our life.

This sense of “always on” can become overwhelming and leave us tired and stressed, maybe depressed or anxious. Into this melee comes our breath – pausing for a few moments and noticing how we are breathing, slowing our breath down and bringing it down from our ribs to our belly, gives us that precious time to literally “catch our breath” and regulate our responses to life around us. As a Yoga Therapist much of my work comes down to teaching simple breath practices to support the nervous system. Used for 20 minutes or so a day these are proven to improve the resilience and functioning of our nervous system, and improve our emotional health (Benson, Relaxation Response 1975). If you struggle with issues like Chronic Pain, IBS, Back Pain, or Stress, Anxiety and Depression, then Yoga Therapy may well be able to help – visit www.isleofwightyogatherapy.co.uk to learn more.

Spring is just around the corner... although the island has taken a battering recently with storm Ciara and storm Dennis the temperatures have been very mild up to this point. For weeks now there have been signs of Spring with daffodils and crocus already in bloom in gardens and hedges. Mothering Sunday is on the 22nd March and don’t forget the clocks always change on the last weekend of March, so this year, that falls on Sunday 29th. With the warmer weather coming soon seasonal businesses will soon be opening their doors to locals and visitors. The island will start coming alive with local events. Our ‘Dates for you Diary’ section on pages 8, 9 and 10 will keep you busy and there is something for everyone including regular community events or one-off social engagements.

News Report from Cllr Paul Fuller - 45 Oxford Street, Northwood, PO31 8PT. Telephone: 01983 289595 - Email: paulfulleriw@gmail.com Planning Applications. • Albert Road - Following feedback, requests to reverse Planning officers decision to convert the site of the former bungalow to 4 flats at 28 was unsuccessful.

Meanwhile, at Gurnard Pines action has been taken suggesting removal of a shed constructed in the grounds of the Because an existing approval for two semi- In2Action Bungalow. detached properties had been approved myself and residents were restricted in Telephone Boxes Removal our arguments to challenge proposals at Consultation took place concerning Planning Committee phone boxes. This is due to lack of use which decreased by 90% in the last 10 Grounds used included lack of parking and years. In respect to the remaining call its impact, over development of the site boxes locally the phonebox opposite and how this would impact on neighbours the Woodvale had 34 calls made, whilst and finally how the developments design Solent View Road had 5 calls made last fitted with the character of the road. year. It is intended for BT to remove both. My grateful thanks to Sharon and Jonathan who with me addressed the Committee. Many thanks also to those residents who provided support and evidence to the Committee. • Bucklers View - I am working with Southern Housing to arrange a meeting with an update on proposals to extend Bucklers View. From my perspective, I continue to raise concerns over how construction traffic will be managed throughout this development. • Baring Road - A letter drop to residents took place concerning proposals to build 6 dwellings on fields between the Farm Bungalow and Greenacres in Baring Road. Because of the impact this will have closing the green gap between Cowes and Gurnard, I intend calling in this application if officers intend approving proposals. Planning Enforcement - Action is now being enforced at The Range, Place Road

Sail GP - A first meeting with local residents of Cliff Road, Mornington Mews, Mornington Road and Queens Road took place in February. It is intended that this year there will not be a grandstand which caused concerns with residents of Queens Road last year. The other major area of concern from last year was highway management and access to Cliff Road. These issues are being discussed, and will be considered for this year’s event. School Parking - Following incidents of dangerous parking outside Gurnard Primary School, it now seems likely further action will be pursued following complaints made. In Crossfield Avenue highways officers are considering solutions to problems highlighted by residents, the school and school bus operators. continued over the page

News report from Cllr Paul Fuller continued Green Garden Waste - If you have not already added your details to the waiting list for the Green Garden Waste subscription service, and wish to do so you can sign up to the waiting list here: https://bit.ly/2QAbOKQ. By subscribing to the Waste & Environment e-newsletter, you can also subscribe to other IW Council e-newsletters Rolls Hill Road - Since last month, a further traffic incident occurred in Rolls Hill Road. Speaking to residents this is due to a minority of motorists not driving with care or attention. In light of this both Island Roads and the police are fully aware of resident’s concerns. Pedestrian Refuge, Place Road - The battle for The Range Refuge, has moved up a gear. Planning Enforcement are now dealing with this following promises not being actioned. In addition, Planners are also taking action on the poor vehicular access from the site, which again was conditioned with the original approval over 2 years ago. Powered Transporters - I’ve been asked to report about Powered Transporters (i.e Escooters, segways, hoverboards, Go-Peds and U-Wheels), following the fact that these devices are not lawful on any public right of way, cycle track, public pavements and roads under the Highways Act. For details on this please visit: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/poweredtransporters. Lego Challenge, Cowes Enterprise College - Last month, I attended a special presentation in advance of Cowes Enterprise College’s entry to the Isle of Wight First Lego League, where I’m advised the college won the Best Robot Performance, and was pipped by Porchester School as champions. Charged Seafront Parking - Within the IW Council’s Budget for next year, the administration are intending to extend charges to park on the seafront from Cowes to Gurnard. It goes without saying that I will be fighting these proposals, and value residents views on this. 5

Mad as a March Hare When looking for inspiration for this month’s front cover, I immediately thought of the saying ‘Mad as a March Hare’ and it was only natural that my first thoughts turned to local ‘Hare Whisperer’ Nick Edwards to use one of his many amazing hare photos. Amongst the hundreds he has taken this one caught my eye and shows the beauty of these wonderful animals.

Many of you will already be aware of how Nick spends his time waiting patiently at various locations across the Island ready to capture the hares in their natural surroundings and we have been very lucky to feature his photos over the last couple of years and I look forward to seeing more of them.

Whilst Nick has continued to spend large amounts of his time photographing his favourite fast-moving subject over the last year, he has enjoyed other wildlife and local event photography, including photographing for RNLI media, as part of his station officer role at Cowes Lifeboat. In addition, last autumn, he was awarded the title “Photographer of the Year” by the Royal Society of Biology, had his work included in ten International photo exhibitions around the world and was a contributor to two photo books. One of these books is the local large format “Wight Book”, which has a related photo exhibition featuring the work of all the local photographers involved in the charity-benefitting book project, including Nick, currently showing at the Julia Margaret-Cameron Museum of Photography at Dimbola Lodge, Freshwater Bay (29th Feb – early April). Nick’s website www.wightseen.co.uk is home to his collection of pictures of varied subjects captured here on our beautiful Island. His prints are also available to purchase via Available Light Gallery in St Thomas Square, Newport. 6

FREE PSA Blood Test Event for men aged between 45 and 85 The Isle of Wight Prostate Cancer Support Group in partnership with the Cowes Masons will be organising another PSA blood test event on Saturday 25th April at Cowes Enterprise College, Crossfield Avenue, Cowes, PO31 8HB To obtain an appointment, it will be necessary to register and book online from 6th March, via our website; www.isleofwightprostatecancersupportgroup.org.uk The PSA event will run from 9.30 am – 4.00 pm and times can be selected that are convenient for each individual, subject to availability. Because we anticipate a large entry early on, we would advise that appointments are made promptly from 6th March, to guarantee a place. Because we realise that not everyone is computer confident and may need help to register online, we are running workshops at Newport and Ryde Libraries where an expert will be on hand to assist with booking for this event. Just come along to the library on these days:Newport Library Friday 6th March 1 – 4 pm or Ryde Library Thursday 12th March 1 – 4 pm With the new statistics recently released by NHS (UK) that over 12,000 men died last year from prostate cancer, we feel it is essential that all men over 50 should be tested and earlier if there is prostate cancer history in the family, or of West Indian or Asian descent. The testing will be conducted by trained phlebotomists taking blood from a vein in the arm, this will be analysed at a hospital laboratory and after a report has been produced by a Urological Consultant, the result will be sent to the person being tested within 7 – 10 working days.

One man dies every 45 minutes in the UK from prostate cancer and it is now the leading cancer found in men but statistics show that if caught in the early stages, treatment is 80% effective.

Don’t delay, get tested right away, since an early diagnosis can greatly improve your chances of successful treatment. For any enquiries email iwpcsg@gmail.com IW Prostate Cancer Support Group Reg. Charity No. 1173916
