Welcome to the March issue of Island Magazines. During these difficult times I am very grateful to advertisers, contributors, readers and distributors who have supported this local community magazine which in turn has enabled me to keep publishing it each month. We had some very cold weather during February along with the promise of snow but unfortunately or fortunately (depending how you feel about it) it did not really amount to much and the few flakes we did have only settled for a few hours. As we move into March I hope that Spring will bring some warmer weather so we can enjoy our daily exercise and look more positively to the future. Inside this issue will you find the regular news reports from local councillors, which are always informative and are a good way to keep up with local news for your area. There are also feature articles ranging from postal votes for the upcoming elections, census 2021 and what’s happening in March and I know many of you really enjoy our puzzle section and you will find this on pages 12 and 13. If you have any news or information you would like shared, please do get in contact with me and I will help you as best I can. I hope you enjoy reading this issue and look forward to catching up with you next month.

Apply now for a postal vote for this year’s local elections At the time of publishing, local elections are still intended to go ahead on Thursday 6 May 2021 and Islanders will go to the polls to have their say on who represents them at the Isle of Wight Council, town, parish and community council and police and crime commissioner elections. If you’re thinking about voting by post, you can apply to do this now. Claire Shand, electoral registration officer at the Isle of Wight Council, said: “The elections will take place at a time when COVID-19 continues to present risks to public health. Depending on the infection rate, measures taken to control the spread of the virus may change as we approach May. “We are working hard to ensure polling stations will be safe places to vote, but you can choose to apply to vote by post or by proxy instead. If you are thinking about applying for a postal vote, then please do so as early as possible. To vote in the elections - either at a polling station, by post, or by appointing someone you trust to vote on your behalf as your proxy - you must first be registered to vote, which can be done online in just five minutes. To then apply to vote by post you need to download, print, and fill out a postal vote application form at www.iow.gov.uk/Council/OtherServices/Electoral-Registration/PostalVotes. Once you have completed the form and signed it, you need to send it to Electoral Services, County Hall, Newport, Isle of Wight, PO30 1UD. To request a postal vote application form email electoral.services@iow.gov.uk or call (01983) 823380. The deadline to apply for a postal vote and cancel or make changes to a current postal or proxy vote at this election is 5pm on 20 April 2021. Any residents who have any questions can contact the Isle of Wight Council electoral registration team on 01983 823380, via email: electoral.services@iow.gov.uk or through the website at www.iow.gov.uk/Council/Elections/Electoral-Registration/Contact 4

News Report from Cllr Paul Fuller - 45 Oxford Street, Northwood, PO31 8PT. Telephone: 01983 289595 - Email: paulfulleriw@gmail.com Elections: Thursday 7th May - At the moment elections are pending for IW Council and Local Town and Parish Councillors, as well as for our Police Commissioner. Please register through the following link: www.gov.uk/register-tovote Smoke-Free Shelters - Last month, I was asked to relay concerns over people smoking in bus shelters, where stickers have now been posted. Of concern locally were shelters next to Bucklers View in Gurnard and at the Roundhouse. Gurnard/ Cowes Seafront Parking approved by IW Council’s Cabinet Despite huge opposition, the IW Council’s Cabinet approved plans to introduce charges on the seafront. You can read in greater depth on my website, everything that could be put into the campaign was. From the viability of charging, to offering the Council a more sustainable means of raising revenue (This was supported last year, by financial officers); from legal challenges, to arguments that the proposals were out of context with the Council’s Corporate and Wellbeing Strategies the Team behind the campaign left no stone unturned. As far as I, and most residents are concerned the fight against these illconceived daft proposals continue. Cowes Medical Centre - I continue to receive feedback from residents concerning communication with Cowes Medical Centre. From the perspective of E-consult and feedback via the Centre’s 6
website the response is generally positive. However, for residents without access to a computer there continues to be some issues. All four IW Councillors attended a recent Health and Wellbeing Scrutiny Meeting where feedback was shared and hosted by Cowes South and Northwood Councillor, John Nicholson. In response to this meeting, I am ever hopeful for a positive way forward! Coastal Path - Following further landslips, the coastal path between Gurnard and Sticelett has been closed. Please note this section will not be rolled back and reinstated until ground movement stabilises and repairs can take place. St Mary’s Junction: Access to Cowes from St Mary’s Hospital - Following new signage, there remains confusion of whether vehicles can travel to Cowes once leaving St. Mary Hospital. In response, I am advised drivers who feel confident enough to do so, can undertake a U-turn at the traffic lights at the Forest Road Junction. On exiting the hospital, they can get into the right turn lane to go into Forest Road, and when the lights are green, there is enough room for cars and small vans to undertake a U-turn safely as no other traffic flow is on a green light. Green Garden Waste - There are 3,000 additional spaces for the IW Council’s green waste service for this year. New continued over the page
News report from Cllr Paul Fuller continued customers are able to join the council’s green garden waste collection service (for the subscription year starting 1st April, at www.iwight.com/greengardenwaste
from 70% to 65%. From my perspective, I could not support this knowing many residents who are struggling with low incomes.
The subscription window remains open until 20 March and costs £72 per year. This entitles householders to a fortnightly collection of green garden waste and free collection of your real Christmas tree each year.
Rosie’s Bench - A new picnic bench has been agreed to be located next to Gurnard Green in memory of Roanna Jardine who passed away last year and was subject to fundraising by friends and family. In addition, Gurnard Parish Council are positioning another extra bench following agreement from the IW Council.
This service was updated in 2020 to offer users the option of a new direct debit payment service that will automatically renew your subscription each year. Full Council - Under the Council Leader’s Report, it was highlighted that extra money offered to the Island through both the Fair Funding Review and an Island Deal had again not been forthcoming and as a consequence difficult decisions will be taken at this month’s budget meeting. There were two key votes at Full Council, the first related to the Council’s Pay Policy for Staff, whilst in contrast the second related to Local Council Tax Support. In recent years, Government has given local Council’s the ability to consider how much Council Tax support they offer to residents. This of course, is in light of local Councils facing year on year savings and additional pressures. Quite rightly, older residents on low incomes receive Full Council Tax support capped at 100%, whereas working families support has been cut back from 100%. This year most IW Councillors took the decision to reduce the level of support
Bonfires - I still receive complaints concerning garden bonfires. If you have no other choice than to have a bonfire, please let your neighbours know beforehand. Again, at this time of the year damp vegetation being burnt unsupervised can cause considerable smoke and harm to those with breathing difficulties! Please note, adjacent to dips in the land, smoke will linger longer. In Baring Road, the Jordan Valley and the Luck Valley, myself and Environmental Health receive regular calls. As a rule of thumb, depending upon what is being burnt, more than one bonfire per month may constitute becoming a statutory nuisance. Planning Updates: • 77 Place Road: 14 dwellings (For first phase of two phased development). A letter drop took place to 50 nearby households. Concerns were expressed regarding coalescence and safeguarding wildlife corridors, vehicular access, highway infrastructure issues, speed limits and social/ affordable housing timeframes.

Census day is on March 21st Have you received your census 2021 letter? Households across the Isle of Wight are being asked to take part in Census 2021. It’s important you fill in your census questionnaire because the information you share affects the life of every single person living on the Isle of Wight Charities and voluntary organisations often use it as evidence to get funding. It helps businesses to understand their customers and, for example, decide where to open new shops. Plus, those doing research, like university students and people looking into their family history, use census data. It provides important information on population diversity, allowing organisations to know whether they are meeting their responsibilities and triggering action where necessary. The Office for National Statistics (ONS) will send you a letter in the post with an access code and instructions (from March 1st). You can fill in your census questionnaire online as soon as you get yours. Paper questionnaires will be available for those who need them. Here are some Isle of Wight census facts from the last census in 2011 If you don’t get one in the next 138,265 people lived in Isle of Wight. couple of weeks, please get in 761 of you were chefs. touch with the census contact There were 299 boat/ship builders and repairers. centre - www.census.gov.uk 280 people were farmers. 14 of you worked in footwear & leather working You can also request a paper trades. questionnaire if you’d prefer 9,508 of you walked to work. to complete your census that The top language, other than English or Welsh, was way. It has been carried out every decade since 1801, with the exception of 1941. A few scam reports from Trading Standards this week. Be very wary of any unsolicited phone calls, emails and texts and remember NEVER click on links in any messages! • Increasing reports around domestic/ white goods insurances. These appear to be very prevalent at the minute and will call you to say that you need this insurance, or your insurance has expired, and you must make the payments. These companies are growing in number and the insurances are worthless. One customer who had taken the insurance out needed to use it as her washing machine had broken, she was met with a wall of silence/excuses. These are not genuine – Do Not be bullied into taking them out.

It is a card and an app which RAPIDLY tells those nursing you what health history and medication you are on. Seriously, this could be lifesaving. The family who came up with the idea and produced it, know from personal experience how this could help. Give it a look, but more importantly, download or apply for a sick relative. HEDGES: I do wonder if people actually walk outside their homes to see the difficulty overhanging hedges and trees make? Now is a good time to pop out and have a look. There are plenty of people out there who I am sure would assist you with cutting back. I fear for the elderly, partially sighted and young children. What does the month of March offer us? March is normally the month when the Island starts coming to life again with Spring events for everyone to enjoy. Unfortunately this is not a normal year... and as we are currently living through a pandemic local events have been cancelled and put on hold. But all is not lost as there are still some yearly events to look forward to and which you can celebrate in your own unique style, indoors, in your bubble while keeping safe and not breaking any lockdown rules.
St David’s Day - Monday 1st March. St David is the patron saint of Wales and he
is celebrated on March 1st. To mark the day, Welsh people around the world wear one or both of Wales’s national emblems - a daffodil and a leek. ... Patron saints are chosen to be special protectors or guardians over all areas of life.
Meteorological Spring 2021 – Monday 1st March. In meteorology for the Northern
hemisphere, spring begins on this day. The meteorological seasons are divided according to the calendar months. Spring months are March, April and May. Spring is one of the four conventional temperate seasons following winter and preceding summer. Spring is seen as a time of growth, renewal, of new life (both plant and animal) being born. The term is also used more generally as a metaphor for the start of better times, as in the Prague Spring. Unstable weather may more often occur during spring, when warm air begins on occasions to invade from lower latitudes, while cold air is still pushing on occasions from the Polar regions.
Mothering Sunday – Sunday 14th March. Mothering Sunday always falls on the
fourth Sunday in Lent, 21 days before Easter Sunday and is a day honouring mothers and mother churches. Celebrated in the British Isles and elsewhere in the English-speaking world. Mothering Sunday is the biggest flower buying day of the year in Britain and Carnations are the flowers typically associated with Mothering Sunday. Mothering Sunday was originally the day when in 16th Century Christian practice one would make an annual visit to one’s mother church, which meant that most mothers would be reunited with their children on this day.

St Patrick’s Day – Wednesday 17th March. The day
commemorates Saint Patrick and the arrival of Christianity in Ireland and celebrates the heritage and culture of the Irish in general. Celebrations generally involve public parades and festivals, céilís, and the wearing of green attire or shamrocks. St. Patrick’s Day became an official public holiday in Ireland in 1903 with the passing of the Bank Holiday (Ireland) Act 1903. “An excellent team offering an invaluable service”

Northern Hemisphere, the March equinox (aka spring equinox or vernal equinox) occurs when the Sun crosses the equator line, heading north in the sky. This event marks the start of spring in the northern half of the globe. After this date, the Northern Hemisphere begins to be tilted more toward the Sun, resulting in increasing daylight hours and warming temperatures. With the equinox, enjoy the increasing sunlight hours, with earlier dawns and later sunsets.
