Dear Readers Welcome to the May issue of Island Magazines. Whilst writing this the sun is shining and the days are starting to warm up. The Island has sprung back into life and the tourists are on their way and seasonal businesses are now open. There are plenty of places to visit and things to do across the Island whether it’s a beach picnic, a country walk or visiting one of the many towns to mooch around and see some of the unique local shops. On pages 8 & 9 you will find ‘Dates for your Diary’ which includes details of events happening throughout May. This month’s issue is packed full of news and information and it’s also an ideal way to find local services offered by local businesses. Please take the opportunity to support them and let them know you saw them advertised here. We have been working with the IOW Cats Protection and some of their mature residents and you can find more information about this on page 18. I hope you all have a great May and enjoy the Bank Holidays. Until next month....

News Report from Paul Fuller - 74 Wyatts Lane, Cowes, PO31 8QA. Telephone: 01983 289595 - Email: paulfulleriw@gmail.com Repair to Slipway, Gurnard Many thanks to the resident who repaired the slipway at the of Shore Path. On behalf of residents, I’ve been asked to relay my grateful thanks for undertaking this work! Planning Updates: • Dottens Farm. I am advised this application will be one of the first applications to be considered by the new Planning Committee following local elections. • Coach House, Queens Road. Following feedback, I’m seeking a condition to utilise Queens Road instead of Marine View Close for access by Construction Traffic. In addition, I’m supporting residents’ requests to improve visibility splays from Marine View Close to Egypt Hill. I am hopeful this matter is close to resolution. • 13 Shore Road. The Planning Appeal for this application has again been dismissed by the Planning Inspectorate. • Albert Road. Thank you to those who contacted me concerning this application! I’m currently awaiting an update from the Planning Officer!
coming months, I am suggesting facilitating regular meetings between the developers and residents. In conversations had, I know it would be helpful to understand what works will be undertaken, when, and the rationale for these taking place.
Highways Updates. • Both Princes Esplanade and Egypt Esplanade were eventually resurfaced last month. Subsequently, I’ve received a positive response concerning improvements to both the road and footway. • In the meantime, please share your thoughts on the Footway linking Gurnard with Cowes. I’ve been asked (and am) supporting efforts to make this path easier to use for mobility impaired pedestrians. Subsequently, I’ve made representations to both Island Roads and Coastal Protection Officers. • A request has been received to Yarnbomb Gurnard in July. This initiative has my full support, and I’ve been in liaison with Island Roads to ensure this event can and will happen! • It was necessary to remove a tree, in Solent View Road following storm damage. I’m advised this tree will be replaced before School Crossing Support - Please support the end of April. Cowes Primary School’s School Crossing on Many thanks to our District Steward Park Road. The school hopes to raise £13,500 • from Island Roads who promptly assisted in to sustain the patrol for three years after resolving damaged paving on Cowes Parade funding from Cowes Town Council ends for this academic year. I joined the Head Teacher, and monitoring the raised ironworks which is again becoming an issue in Shore Road. News Report from Paul Fuller • Following face to face discussions with residents concerning the Traffic Regulation Order for Baring Road, (endorsed by Gurnard Parish and Cowes Town Council) my report was submitted to both Island Roads and the IW Council. Residents have asked for me to add transferral of double yellow lines between Curtle Mead and Battery Road from the north side of Baring Road to the south. Also this month: • I continue to talk to residents of Glen Place now that all properties on this new development are now sold. A Management Committee is due to be formed. However, in the meantime I am supporting residents in getting loose ends tied up. • A successful meeting took place to resolve outstanding Beach Hut issues with owners at Gurnard Green. • I attended the most recent meeting of Cowes Medical Centre’s Patients Participation Group. Items that were discussed included the recruitment of new participants and proposals to improve medical care and signposting at the practice. Promoted by Paul Fuller, 74 Wyatts Lane, Cowes, PO31 8QA

I hope last months recipe was a success for you and this time the Four Seasons Cookery Academy is treating us to a sweet treat (just in case you didn’t have enough chocolate over Easter). This recipe is for a Jaffa Cake and it sounds delicious. There are a couple of top tips at the bottom of the recipe to reduce calories and sugar intake which in turn means you can always have that extra slice without feeling guilty.
Jaffa Cake©
2 Eggs (medium) 3 oz (75g) Castor Sugar 3 oz (75g) Self-Raising Flour Orange Curd or Orange Marmalade Milk Chocolate (approx half a bar of 46%) Dark Chocolate (approx quarter bar min 70%)
www.cookeryacademy.co.uk
Heat Oven to 220°C (Gas mark 7) and line a Swiss Roll tin with baking parchment. Break eggs into a bowl and whisk lightly. Add the sugar and whisk well until the mixture is thick, creamy and almost white in colour. Lightly fold in the flour. Place into the prepared tin and bake for approximately 8 minutes. Be careful not to over bake. Top with Orange Curd or Marmalade (depending on taste). Place the Chocolate in a microwave-proof bowl and melt carefully – 10 seconds at a time. Drizzle it over the cake and cut into squares when cool. This is a fatless cake which is good – do try to use a decent flour to get a good result with this. The flavour of this cake is absolutely delicious – and not bad for us, either which is a bonus. Don’t put too much Marmalade/Curd on and reduce calories and sugar by drizzling the Chocolate, you will still get the same chocolate ‘hit’ but with far fewer calories/fat.

Gardening and Websites It might be an odd combination but a mix of a desk job and outdoors work is just what the doctor ordered for Isle of Wight website developer Tim Leal. Having developed websites now for over ten years, a back problem meant a trip to the doctor and a more active lifestyle was prescribed and an interest in gardening turned into a healthy side-line. If you need a new website or want to refresh your current website, then tldesignworks (see main advert) can deliver something modern and fresh. Website hosting and site backup are all part of the service. From online brochures to e-commerce, contact Tim to find out more. Tim is responsible for several popular Isle of Wight websites including www.isleofwight.pub and www.welcometotheisland.co.uk as well as popular Isle of Wight musicians Lucid at www.lucidband.co.uk. A major project for 2017 is online invoicing services. Tim developed Bright Invoicing to cater for the self-employed or sole trader who doesn’t want to tackle many of the complicated accounting or book-keeping alternatives. It’s currently free to use and ideal for those who want to keep track of income and expenses. See more at www.brightinvoicing.com If you need your lawn mowing or hedge trimming Tim is happy to do that too! With his own tools, Tim can leap in his car and covers most of East Wight. So contact him today and get your garden weeded and lawn looking tip top for the summer…!

Blossom Time... This time of the year is probably one of my favourites, especially seeing the blossoming trees which bring colour to every town and which is a sure sign that Autumn and Winter are gone and Spring and Summer are here. This month’s front cover was taken by Amanda Ellis who has captured the amazing blossom on her plum tree growing in her garden.

Amanda moved to the Island over 25 years ago from London and immediately fell in love with Island life. Amanda suffers from a heart problem which has affected her health but her love of photography has kept her spirits up and when she is having a good day she travels around the Island by bus taking photos and on the other days she is happy to sit and enjoy her garden taking photos of the ever changing plants and trees and the visiting wildlife. 10

Island Pain Relief
Kim Aminu is a Natural Pain Therapist and understands that short and long-term pain can make life unpleasant and unbearable at times. She has trained to advanced levels in both Physiokey and Scenar Therapy and has been working from Cowes Chiropractic Clinic since October 2016. Kim believes that Physiokey really is excellent for pain relief and has already helped many clients obtain release from painful conditions. Physiokey is a hand held device used to alleviate chronic and acute pain. It has no side effects and is an excellent alternative to pain medication. During the session, the device is placed on the skin and a slight tingling is felt. Impulses are sent to and from the brain to enhance the healing and pain relief processes. Physiokey stimulates the body’s own natural pain relieving mechanisms and kick starts the body’s selfhealing. Physiokey can be used to treat many injuries, all body pains, headaches/migraines, fibromyalgia, arthritis, tennis/golfers elbow and many more painful conditions. After Physiokey Therapy, many clients are much more relaxed and report prolonged, deep sleep with an overall feeling of well being and relaxation. For more information visit the website at www.islandpainrelief.co.uk or see main advert for contact details should you wish to take the first step towards controlling your pain.

What’s happening in our area by ‘local and vocal’ Lora Peacey-Wilcox RESURFACING WORKS: Begins on Newport/ Cowes Road down to Parkhurst. THANKFULLY it will be done between 22.00-05.00hrs. From 2nd May -14th. BINS ON PAVEMENTS: It may seem ‘common sense’ but many residents leave their wheelie bins on narrow pavements thus making mums and babies move into the roads. Our elderly and partially sighted people are particularly struggling; so if you can put your bin up into your front courtyard it would be much appreciated. BIRD WATCHER? Do you have 2 mornings a week between mid April and late June? Would you like to take part in this important survey? Call 01983 201565 or email info@gifttonature. org.uk for further information. PUBLIC TOILETS: It utterly amazes me why people would intentionally block the public toilets. PLEASE do not put down wipes/nappies or other items that could block these toilets - the tax payer (YOU) are paying to maintain them! CROWDFUNDING TO HELP OUR CHILDREN: Please take a look at www.cowesprimaryschool. co.uk website to contribute to a much needed pedestrian crossing for our children using the locals schools on Park Road. We all know how busy this road is. Funding will help support a crossing attendant until funding and permission can be granted for a proper crossing. BANKS IN COWES (OR NOT) I have met with a number of you who raised concerns. I raised this at the Town Council meeting and suggested that the town council should have organised a protest about the closures. Although other councillors supported this, I am afraid it is probably too little too late... I am really 14
concerned about the elderly who are not able to do their banking online and WILL struggle to get up to the post office in Mill Hill Road. POST OFFICE PALLANCE ROAD: My sincere thanks to the postmistress at Pallance, for agreeing extending opening days to allow for the Mill Hill to be prepared. Pallance will be open MON-FRI mornings from 25th April -19th May. POST OFFICE RELOCATION: I reiterate my thanks to Co-op Mill Hill Rd for taking on the post office for Cowes. There will be 2 counters which will be open Mon-Sat 9-5.30pm. A SERVICE POINT will operate Mon-Sat 6am9am. and 5.30-11pm. Sunday 6am-11pm. DON’T FORGET THE NUMBER 32 BUS THAT OPERATES 6 DAYS A WEEK AND STOPS OUTSIDE OF CO-OP ON MILL HILL ROAD. BIRD MIGRATION: Did you know approx 90,000 waders and wild fowl migrate each winter? www.birdaware.org are looking into this and would like your support. ‘FERRY TALES’ At Dimbola: I am very excited to see this exhibition. For over a year artists have been creating poems, songs and taking pictures of the ferries across the solent. The exhibition is from 21st April to 2nd July. DO GO! ICELAND - THE LAND OF FIRE AND ICE: Exhibition at Dimbola until 16th July. Incredible pictures. MARITIME AND SHIPWRECK COLLECTION: We must congratulate Martin Woodward for his YEARS of dedication to the fantastic collection he has produced.
What’s happening in our area by Lora PeaceyWilcox CYCLING IN THE HIGH STREET COWES: I have suggested painting signs asking cyclist to dismount ON THE PEDESTRIAN GROUND. Apparently cyclists are not aware of the signs as you enter the pedestrian area. I have a plan to help alleviate the situation with the help of my ’speed watch’ colleagues. Adoption time Yes kittens are extremely cute and playful but then again so are these beautiful mature cats who desperately want to adopt some humans so they can have forever homes. They are saddened that they have been overlooked for the newer, younger models but these cats still know how to have a fun time and are well behaved and toilet trained... what more could you possibly want!!! They have so much to offer and still have lots of life in them and plenty of love to give that special person or family. Don’t delay, adopt today. Island Magazines are pleased to introduce these adorable adult cats who want to be given a chance. There are more on the website at www.isleofwight.cats.org.uk or pop in and meet them in person at 122, Marlborough Road, Ryde, PO33 1AW. They are open 11am - 4pm daily but closed on Tuesdays. This little poser is Mittens and she is 3 years old. She doesn’t want to share with other cats or dogs or young children as she wants to be the centre of attention. She is black and white and is always happy to let you play with her.
This handsome chappie is Thomas and he is simply adorable and these photos do not do him justice. He is happy to live with dogs, cats and children and has a lovely laid back attitude to life.
This white and tortoiseshell pussy is Twizzy. In real life she isn’t as stern as her photo portrays her. She doesn’t want to live with other cats and her mind isn’t made up yet as to whether or not she likes dogs. Ideally she would be suited to an older family. She is happy and loving and desperately wants her forever home.
My lords, ladies and gentlemen, may I introduce you to Princess... This beautiful tabby is 9 years old but certainly isn’t over the hill just yet. Princess wants her owners all to herself and isn’t happy to share with children, cats or dogs and would ideally be more suited to a more mature person/family.
This is Misty who is grey and white and is 15 years old. Don’t be put off by her age as she is a beautiful and friendly cat and still likes to go outdoors. She doesn’t want to live with other cats or dogs and would suit a more mature family.
Whisper is tortoiseshell and white. She is ever so pretty and has a lovely personality. She is looking for some mature humans to offer her a loving home, but she doesn’t want to live with other cats or dogs as she wants you all to herself.
