The autumn is an exciting time for us at the Friends of St Mary’s Hospital. This is when we sit down and look at all the applications that come in from the Hospital staff who want to purchase equipment and resources to make patients’ treatment and hospital stays just that bit better. This activity is the core of what the Charity is all about. We are often asked why the NHS cannot provide these things. The answer is that the NHS must statutorily provide a level of resources to meet needs. What we are asked for is equipment that goes that bit further to improve treatment and outcomes. Think of it like buying a car. Four wheels will get you from A to B, but a better model will increase comfort and your travelling experience. We cannot provide everything that is asked for and it is sad to have to refuse funds for some very worthwhile items. But we take great care to discuss all the applications with senior hospital staff and they help us maintain a sensible perspective on what priorities we set for our deliberations. Once our decisions are made, the applicants are informed and the purchase process begins. It can take some time to get everything in and we keep a keen eye on when items are delivered so that we can go and see them in use. Examples of what we will be providing this year are special brightly coloured and safe crockery and cutlery for dementia patients and a sub epidermal moisture scanner which will assist in the reduction of the occurrence of pressure sores.
Nick Scott-Denness (left) and Paul Newnham with the pain-relieving equipment.
We also endeavour to provide certain items for staff - for example, last year we provided comfortable furniture for the rest rooms for the pathology lab.
This year we have provided grants to two doctor’s surgeries for equipment that will mean less hospital visits. This is convenient for patients and also relieves some pressure on St Mary’s itself. We allocated approximately £79,000 worth of grants for 2017. All this is possible because of two main things. One is the incredible generosity of Islanders who donate from putting spare coins in boxes right up to remembering us in their will. The other is the fantastic team of over 60 volunteers who run our cafes in the hospital foyer, at the Laidlaw Centre and in Ryde Health and Well Being Clinic. We also have a well stocked shop in the Hospital foyer. You can help us by using these facilities as much as you can. The coffee is great and less than half the price of high street brands. All the profit after running costs goes to the Friends’ Fund so that extra cup of coffee may well help to fund something you or a loved one will feel the benefit of when receiving hospital treatment.

News Report from Cllr Paul Fuller - 74 Wyatts Lane, Cowes, PO31 8QA. Telephone: 01983 289595 - Email: paulfulleriw@gmail.com Your Views on Highways Matters -myself and Cllr. John Nicholson have a meeting pending with Island Roads. If you any issues that you wish us to take up, please let us know! Place Road Update - A public meeting took place in October to share suggested proposals for the second phase of this development. Following discussions that have taken place with Planners, which followed residents’ original feedback, the number of units have now fallen from 99 to 92.
Please, please, please if you are popping into Gurnard Village Hall or the shops in Gurnard be mindful of where you park, and please ensure that you park hard against the pavement and leave sufficient site lines for residents exiting Glen Place and Westbrook Lane.
Parklands Avenue - Thank you to Parklands Avenue residents for their patience over the reconstruction of this road. In response to some of the delays being caused by broken utility mains, this is an issue both myself, Cllr Official: Gurnard is the Isle of Wight’s Best Nicholson and Cowes Town Council continue Large Kept Village! - A very big thank you and to address with the companies (esp. congratulations to the volunteers who help Southern Water). to keep Gurnard looking tidy, who received recognition last month. Cowes Community Bus Award Congratulations to our Community Bus The award was presented to Jenny and Ellis Driver, John Berry who scooped the Age from Gurnard In Bloom, and is a testament Friendly Contribution to the Community. to their hard work. John is brilliant describes the passengers as friends and is the only driver I know Sea Defences - During low tide last month, who has a ready supply of dog biscuits for rock drops have taken place to prevent canine passengers. Well done John, much damage from large waves at Gurnard. I deserved! am advised that this work received the full support of Coastal Protection engineers, and Gurnard Parish Council: New Councillors the Marine Management Organisation. needed - Gurnard Parish Council has two vacancies for new Councillors. To find out As a consequence to concerns over the more, please contact Sue Waters on 07443 holding back of sediment movement across 656480, or email: gurnardparishcouncil@ the beach, I’m assured that recording and gmail.com monitoring of the foreshore takes place. Garden Waste Update - Cllr Michael Parking - Residents from Worsley Road, Murwell IW Cabinet Member for contracts Westbrook Lane, Glen Place, Woodvale has highlighted support for a subscription Road and Baring Road have contacted me service for Wheelie Bins to replace the ‘bioconcerning motorists blocking roads and degradable’ waste sacks. Given feedback driveways. received, this suggestion is being met with wider support, myself included! However, timescales are less clear! 6
News Report from Cllr Paul Fuller continued Fixed Link Briefing - I attended a briefing with supporters and opponents to a Fixed Link. The briefing was attended by 20 out of the 40 Isle of Wight Councillors One issue both parties seemed to support was the need for an independent feasibility study. Although I support the IW Council not funding this study, it is worthwhile noting the impact such a scheme will have to allow a broader debate on the pros and cons of any link. Planning Update: Response to IW Council’s Planning Bible Consultation - Cowes Town Council’s Planning Chairman, Cllr David Jones and I responded to a consultation for potentially revising the Island Plan. Following feedback Cowes Town Council referenced comments to safeguard Cowes’ Maritime Industries, Green Spaces whilst concerns were expressed regarding infrastructure and requirements for developers to contribute towards improvements. Full Council Updates - At Full Council I voted against motions to invest £100m in the private commercial sector. This was due to me not feeling reassured by safeguards being in place to allow full scrutiny. I also supported motions to waive charges for parents accompanying school children on the floating bridge and supported motions promoting Rights Of Ways, Ryde Arena, Mental Health, Island Pride and improving Mobility access. Also this month · I met with owners of the Watersedge Café, in Gurnard. They advise they are in the
process of submitting proposals to modernise their café. Once these have been discussed with Planners, the owners hope to share their suggestions with residents. · Preparatory work is taking place to treat Japanese Knotweed at land adjacent to Dottens Farm in Baring Road. · A contractor found himself in hot water when clay was discarded on the beach at Gurnard, following failed attempts to reinstate beach hut footings. Subsequently the beach has been restored to its former glory, and I’m grateful to the owner for keeping me appraised throughout this work. · Planners at the IW Council dismissed requests to consider a new Conservation Area for Shore Road. On this matter, I intend speaking to Planners to explore alternative arrangements to safeguard characteristics at this location. · This month, I’ve received a complaint regarding asbestos fly-tipped at a development in Lower Church Road. Both Environmental Health and the Police have been notified. If you witnessed this, or any other occurrence, please let me know. · Are you interested in becoming a magistrate? Next year there will be two or three vacancies to serve on the Isle of Wight Bench. For details please visit: www.gov. uk/become-magistrate

“Had an absolutely brilliant day today. I was 77, St Mary’s Road, treated to a full day wood turning course with Cowes, PO31 7ST Andy. He is so patient and encouraging. I have learned so much and the bowl I made has pride of place in the house. Also very pleased to have made two pens even though they were very tricky. A great big thank you to Andy and I would recommend this course to everyone with an interest in learning a new skill. I have had a great day”.- SD “I recently booked a full days turning lesson with Andy at Mulberry Tree, it was amazing I learnt a lot from Andy he is a great teacher, he explains everything very clearly. ‘Local and Vocal’ by Lora Peacey-Wilcox REMEMBRANCE PARADE: I will not be at Cowes this year due to being the Chairman of IW Council, I will be at Newport Square 10.45am to lay a wreath there. I know Cowes will be well supported as in previous years. Suitable to all working age residents. ST.MARYS BARRIER/NEW WAYS TO PAY: Gosh, this came as a bit of a shock! Anyhow, The barrier will go in to stop people from ‘cutting through’ St.Marys, generally too fast. As soon as I heard, I asked them to assure me, if there was a major incident on the roundabout, this would be opened up. That has been confirmed. The new payments will be a camera that clocks you entering the site and then again as you leave. You will be charged according to how long you have been on site. I notice that a large number of places now have these installed, and large fines are being issued all over. LIDL in Newport are using them, as is RED FUNNEL at Cowes. Red Funnel said they had them installed due to the fact that parked cars were constantly blocking access to buses and taxis. Red Funnel have also confirmed that
following initial installation they have now extended the length of stay to 20mins. PERMIT PARKING: York St, Thetis, Bridge, Bernard, Arctic, Pelham: I have received an enormous amount of emails/calls about this. I now confirm that the new man responsible for traffic is taking a paper on traffic issues to a meeting in November, until then items are not being taken forward. Thanks to all those that have taken the time to contact me. LITERARY FESTIVAL: I took an annual couple of days out to once again enjoy this fantastic festival. Well done to EVERYONE that ‘makes it happen’; a truly entertaining and informative weekend. CYCLING IN HIGH STREET: Once again near misses are happening on a daily basis. The town council ARE trying to resolve a number of issues there. As always, please get in touch lora08@sky. com or txt: 07970 424214
