Calling all Knitters... Dementia Patients need your help The IOW NHS Trust is appealing for knitters to help create blankets for people living with dementia whilst they are in hospital. Blankets help patients, particularly those living with dementia, to recognise their hospital bed and help provide a more homely feel in a normally clinical hospital ward. Having blankets on the bed will also help patients to see the edge of the bed more clearly when getting in and out and therefore reduce the risk of falls. The scheme has been tried and tested at other NHS hospitals and the IOW NHS Trust is keen to roll it out locally with trials on Appley and Colwell wards. The Trust is now looking for people to help knit or donate wool or new blankets. They need to be brightly colour or patterned and no more that 3 ft wide. There is no restriction to length but to help reduce the risk of falls, short lengths would be preferable. Due to infection control, the blankets are single-use items and will be taken home by the patient when they are discharged. The must be knitted using new wool, or if anyone is donating blankets they must be brand new. People with dementia often have restless hands and like to have something to keep them occupied. The blankets (also known as sensory or comfort blankets) can also provide a wonderful source of visual, tactile and sensory stimulation for those with dementia or even sight impairments. The blankets can have additional items stitched on with different shapes and textures. If people would like to be part of a dedicated knitting group, please let the IOW NHS Trust know; if they receive enough interest they will happily look into providing a knitting night so it can also become a social event for people too. Any donations of knitted blankets, new blankets or wool can be left at the main reception desk of St Mary’s Hospital, Newport. For more information contact mandy.blackler@iow.nhs.uk 2
Welcome to the November issue of Island Magazines. I don’t have much to say this month on the weather except that it’s been very wet and it feels like it’s rained for weeks!!! Fingers crossed that by the time you read this the rain will have stopped and we’ll get some nice dry crisp days. Remembrance Sunday is on the 10th of November and the month is packed with Christmas Fayres and firework/bonfire events taking place across the island. Our ‘Dates for your Diary’ section on pages 8, 9 and 10 will keep you busy. Please remember that if you are having a firework display in your garden please let your neighbours know so they can ensure their family pets are kept safe and secure. Inside is packed with news and information including an update from The Friends of St Mary’s. There are some great local businesses advertising and please support them by using their services as much as you can. I hope you all have a great November and I look forward to catching up with you next month.

Association of Local Councils. Challenging IW Council’s Housing Figures (at 675 new homes per year) Bob Seely MP, supported prioritising 1 and 2 bedroomed units as priority to address housing need. Bob highlighted that by encouraging people to retire to the Island into new 3,4 and 5 bedroomed units, was not financially sustainable and therefore the Island Planning Strategy, could bankrupt the Island in the long term. In response, Planning Officers highlighted that larger homes, are economically attractive to develop and as a matter of course this allowed more contributions to be made available for starter homes.

What’s happening in our area by ‘Local and Vocal’ Lora Peacey-Wilcox REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY: 10th November. Assemble at Northwood Park for 10.50am. Plenty of room in the church for the service after the open ceremony. Parade through the town to Cowes Parade for the end of the service. The Cowes Combined Club (Legion) is open for people after the service. See you all there. MEDINA YARD: I am attending a meeting with regard to the 106 agreements made at IW Council planning application. It has taken some time to get to the stage of agreement between the IWC and the developers. Needless to say, I will continue to ensure all that was agreed is adhered to. I am still devastated that they ignored my plea of a small multi storey car park on the site, for residents and commuters alike! NHS DENTISTS: As many of you know, I was very vocal about our loss of the Cowes Dentist. We were promised plenty of NHS alternative dentists, WHICH HAS NOT HAPPENED! Well, again, not to let things go I contacted the person that promised me, stating it was utterly dire for many. Sooooooo... this was news to me. We have an emergency (You’ve been in agony and desperate for help, haven’t you?!) The Damira studio in East Cowes is open 7 days a week . 8am-6pm and Thursday 8am-8pm. First come first served basis. Alternatively call 111.
honours! Lots of mince pies, activities, and FANTASTIC shopping - who knows, we may even have snow? LIGHT UP A LIFE: In memory of those we have loved and lost. Thursday 5th December, 6.30pm. Cowes Methodist Church, Birmingham Rd. In aid of Mountbatten. Tea and coffee will be served, courtesy of the town council and mince pies courtesy of Sainsburys after the service. Do please come and support! See you there...! BREXIT: Many of you are concerned about not being able to receive your medication. The NHS website has information about this. The IW Council has a team to help if you have issues. Again, check their website, or contact me. LITERARY FESTIVAL: Well done once again to organisers and the army of volunteers. A superb event, and my annual ‘holiday’. Many authors will be coming back to stay on the Island during the warmer weather. They were very impressed with our quirky high street. THE BIG GREEN TOWER?: Many of us see it on our way to Southampton... ’It’s the police training place, ’no it’s not, its the old military hospital’... I was delighted to have a wonderful day there some months back. Well worth a visit!

The Friends of St Mary’s Hospital Update By Lesley Myland You may have recently heard via various sources about the Friends’ foyer cafe moving to another location within the new outpatients department in the North Hospital. Naturally we are sad about this - we have been serving our customers in the foyer for 32 years. However, our amazing team of volunteers and staff have a very positive approach to this development. We are working hard together to ensure that the Friends’ charity will keep on functioning to support the patients and staff at St Mary’s. We plan to keep our amazing team together as far as we can. We will have a bigger shop and will still be running three cafes. Ward trolley services will still go round daily, sometimes twice daily. So there is still lots to do and we will do our best to maintain our reputation for a caring attitude and good service. In the meantime, here are some of the things we have given grants for, as always with the objective of enhancing care and staff well being. We have provided the maternity unit with 5 relaxing and reclining chairs so that partners can wait in comfort for their new babies to arrive, no matter how long it takes! We are very proud of our contribution of £1500 towards the Memory Room for dementia patients in Colwell Ward. This provides a place to relax and enjoy distraction therapies especially designed to be familiar, calming and absorbing. The room is also used by non dementia patients. Note the twiddlemuffs which were made by Friends volunteers and customers with wool kindly donated by members of the public after an appeal. We gave Children’s Speech and Language Therapy 2 iPads and a range of toys designed to help with speech, attention and listening skills which in turn help with other communication skills. As soon as we are settled in our new home in the North Hospital we hope that all our customers will still come and join us for their cuppa! That way we can continue with this support for the patients and staff at St Mary’s Hospital.
