Except this isn’t the case with Nick Edwards and his hares which he continues to frequently photograph following a distribution survey conducted by the Isle of Wight Natural History and Archaeological Society. Nick took up the challenge of locating a stable colony of hares to study and photograph at dawn and dusk on a friendly farm in Cowes.

Nick has very kindly allowed Island Magazines to use one of his prints on the front cover and choosing the best hare picture from his vast collection is nearly one of the hardest tasks I have had to date. Nick began his passion for natural history and photography from a very young age, following in his father’s footsteps; a gifted photographer and wildlife artist himself. Nick is a founder member of Isle of Wight Ornithological Group and was a volunteer for National Trust at Newtown. After Nick’s professional engineering career finished with a very early retirement 6 years ago, he used his time to re-introduce himself to commercial photography which was once a major part of his life. With customers on and off the Island, Nick is a frequent photographer for the RNLI film unit and publications and is a member of the crew at Cowes Lifeboat Station. Hares aren’t the only topic of Nick’s amazing photography skills and his website www. wightseen.co.uk is home to hundreds of pictures of varied subjects captured here on our beautiful Island. Seeing really is believing and I highly recommend that you have a look. If you are a landowner and have a colony of hares which are frequently sighted and would be happy to allow Nick to come and photograph them, then please get in touch with him via the contact details on his website. 2
Welcome and thank you for picking up a copy of the October issue. Whilst writing this, its a tad blustery outside and I am seeing my hopes of an Indian Summer slipping away.I think I need to accept that the weather is likely to stay more suited to Autumn. I’m certainly not complaining as I think our Island is beautiful whatever the season. On pages 18 and 19 you will find the ‘Dates for your Diary’ and there is still lots happening on the Island and if you have an event taking place in the next couple of months please get in contact so we can share the details.

The Spirit of Christmas Building on its 2016 success, Isle of Wight Society for the Blind (IWSB) is again running a short story writing competition which, last year, produced some very high quality entries. Chris Cane, organising the event for IWSB, said: “We are excited to announce the involvement of the celebrities who will, again, support us this year, recording the winning entries from each category.
*
Robert Glenister – known for his roles as con-man Ash ‘Three Socks’ Morgan in the TV series, Hustle. He has also appeared in Sink Or Swim, Soldier Soldier, Doctor Who, A Touch Of Frost to name a few.
*
Katy Manning – best known for her role as Jo Grant in Doctor Who, and more recently in The Sarah Jane Adventures.
*
Edana Minghella – renowned jazz singer whose family hails from the Island.
This is a great opportunity for budding Island writers to become published authors and there are also great prizes to be won by at least thirty talented people!” The winners will be invited to join the team at Vectis Radio to be interviewed on air and Vectis Radio have agreed to give the winners a podcast of their visit/interview, along with a podcast of their story read by one of the celebrities. We welcome everyone to the Award Ceremony at Newport Minster on Monday 18th December at 7.00pm for the prize giving. The winner from the under 12 category will also have their story printed in the County Press and all category winners will be published online. Gutter Clearing
Early till late
(early morning bookings available, just book before 6pm the night before)
Getting you to and from Cowes safely.
As we head into Autumn, the leaves will be falling from the trees and could potentially be falling into, and blocking your gutters which in turn could make your house insurance www.cowestaxis.com null and void as most insurers now state that gutter clearing falls under general maintenance and should be looked at regularly. When your guttering is blocked, rain water will over flow and will eventually cause damage to the structural elements of the building, water will erode the building material and can ultimately cause damage to the foundations, drainage system and the paving. Internally, damp will appear and create mold and mildew. Having your gutters cleared once a year will significantly reduce the risk of any blockages caused by leaves, moss or any other debris. Dazzle External Cleaning offer the latest technology in gutter clearing saying goodbye to costly scaffolding and ladders their hi tech powered vacuum with portable video camera which allow them to survey and clean gutters from ground level. Dazzle External Cleaning also offer soft washing and pressure washing or all external surfaces including cladding, render, patios and roofs. News Report from Cllr Paul Fuller - 74 Wyatts Lane, Cowes, PO31 8QA. Telephone: 01983 289595 - Email: paulfulleriw@gmail.com Place Road Development: Next Phase - Developers are considering increasing the numbers of dwellings on site from 86, which was approved on appeal to 99.
discharge of waste water into the sea as a result. This was further compounded by storm water the day before.
They have advised me that following feedback, they are mindful of submitting a new application which they feel mitigates against a number of concerns raised by neighbours. Their new suggestions include:
In response, I am assured this had a negligible impact upon water quality given this was promptly remedied. It is noted that because Gurnard Beach is designated as a ‘bathing beach’ the IW Council has a duty to put in place signage advising residents. Subsequently the temporary repair resolved the problem until parts were replaced promptly the following week.
· Removing the arc of properties, of concern to adjoining Place Road residents. · Removing the size, impact and scale of properties adjacent to properties in Tuttons Hill. · Reducing the density, scale & impact of large 2+ storey properties (Especially adjacent to Place Road) · Increase the availability and density of smaller single storey units, reflecting the demand to downsize. Please note, at present the developer ‘could’ build the approved 86 dwellings, and their suggestion is for consideration as a direct alternative to the approved scheme. I’ve been advised a Public Information Session will take place, once pre-application discussions are firmed up with Planning Officers. Once I know more, I will be keeping residents advised of timescales etc. Gurnard Pumping Station - Last month a problem was identified with the pumping station at Gurnard Green. Initially, Southern Water attempted to temporarily fix the problem. However, this failed resulting in a 14
Throughout the incident both the Isle of Wight Council were appraised whilst the Environment Agency continued to gauge and monitor water quality. Jet Ski’s - I continue to receive complaints regarding jet ski’s coming into conflict with bathers on Gurnard Beach. Details have been passed to the Marine Police (who are contactable on: 02380 236753). Please note, there is a bye-law in place restricting jet-skis to 8 knots and limits use to depths of in excess of 2 metres. The purpose of this bye-law is to safeguard swimmers, and I would expect all instances of any antisocial jet skiing to be reported. Planning Committee - After 14 years, I am no longer a member of the IW Council’s Planning Committee. This is due to me being stretched thinly within my roles as Chairman of Scrutiny and through my more active positions held within Cowes Town Council (which I am currently Mayor for) and within Gurnard Parish Council.
News Report from Cllr Paul Fuller continued This is giving me a more locally focused role which I am thoroughly loving. It is my intention to return to the Planning Committee, after this year to give fresh impetus to the role. In the meantime, this offers me the time to become more involved within Planning within both local Councils. Toilets - Mindless vandalism has taken place to public toilets in both Cowes and Gurnard. Please note that when this does occur, as a consequence this mean provision becomes both more limited, as well as expensive for precept payers. If you witness any damage please let both the police and myself know! Energy Suppliers - I’m hoping in October or November to hold a drop-in session with the Footprint Trust, to assist residents switch Energy Suppliers. With the support of The Footprint Trust, The Friends of Cowes Library and Gurnard Cybercafe, I am hoping that residents who have reverted back to standard tolls can save £100’s If you are interested, please save your most recent Bills and hopefully with this support we can assist! During the summer I did this and I hope to save over £300 from my Energy Bills. Please contact the Footprint Trust direct on 01983 822282 or www.footprint-trust.co.uk for details. Alternatively, further information can be found at Uswitch, Moneys Supermarket and
the Energy Helpline: www.uswitch.com, www.moneysupermarket.com and www.energyhelpline.com Roads - Reconstruction continues in Parklands Avenue. Wells, broken water pipes and a multitude of other issues, I’m told have underlined the problems that the tenacious crews are facing. Many thanks to local residents for their ongoing patience… Woodvale Road was also redressed during the summer, and some concerns were expressed regarding the quality of this work. It is noted that, in comparison to some roads the level of this treatment (by way of Micro Resurfacing) can be quicker and can take time for the surface to level out. This matter has been taken up by the IW Council’s Contract Management Team who I’ve called for to monitor quality. Parking - I’ve received a number of complaints from residents regarding neighbours parking on white lines and yellow lines in Albert Road. Please note more double yellow lines and any enforcement that takes place is not always welcomed and, I ask residents to be mindful of where and how they park! Speeding - I have received complaints regarding speeding and safety to pedestrians in both Cockleton Lane and Marsh Road. I have asked the roads police to monitor these roads, and know when ticketed in the past those residents caught speeding are either residents of those working in Gurnard!
