Have your priorities changed recently? Are you considering changing direction in your work and/or personal life? Are your many thoughts overwhelming?
Work with me to gather your scattered Work with Maggie to understand your thoughts and pinpoint what it is you thoughts and pinpoint what it is you really really want. want. Use her 16 years of expertise and experience in coaching, plus her 20 years of experience working within the NHS, to regain your confidence and build your foundation for your future. Sometimes it can seem to be too scary to be coached on your own, so Maggie offers group coaching. There is a powerful energy when groups get together for growth and transformation, both personally and collectively. We are all connected by that spark inside and work powerfully and compassionately when we connect with each other, especially when we share common goals of positive change. One client said: “Maggie intuitively knew that the path I was on wasn’t the way I truly wanted to go. She allowed me to see that my passions were elsewhere and opened my mind to the possibilities ahead of me. I changed my path and have never looked back. Maggie was totally right.” There is no such thing as a FREE seminar. There are many ‘coaches’ out there who will try and sell you their latest programme which is allegedly for your benefit. A lot of these people are actors and accomplished sales people.
Rest assured Maggie is none of those things. When you work with her you will learn how to live life like you, with more freedom, more fun and less stress. Get in touch hello@maggiecurrie.co.uk

Another month has passed, and our summer was extended with some beautiful sunny days in September. As I write this the sun is still shining but there is now a definite nip in the air both early in the morning and late in the evening showing us that Autumn is here.
text or call Island Magazines on 07880 587 931 islandmagazines@gmail.com www.islandmagazines.co.uk
Autumn is a great season and I always use the time to have a good clear out when putting away the summer clothes and bringing out jumpers and boots. The island is a great place for autumnal walks, and we get to see the countryside change with the season.

This is also the time of year when you need to give yourself a health check to get you through the next few months. As well as Covid hanging around, now is also the time when colds, coughs and flu viruses are looking for their next victims. On page 14 you will find some top tips on how you can help yourself and boost your immune system from local Nutritionist Michele Newton. Inside you will find the regular news reports and some interesting feature articles and advertisers. On pages 8 and 9 you will find the puzzle section, which is great for keeping your brain active especially while the nights are drawing in. I hope you enjoy reading this issue and I hope you all keep safe and well and I look forward to catching up with you again next month and in the meantime if you have any news you would like to share please do not hesitate to get in touch.

What’s happening in our area by ‘Local and Vocal’ Lora Peacey-Wilcox COVID is here to stay. We need to move forward with our lives while trying not to make the situation worse. So hand washing/gels, distancing, face masks. We have lived with severe outbreaks before. Spanish Flu Feb 1918 - Apr 1920, it infected 500million people and caused the death of 17-50 million people. NOW you see why the government is behaving as it is. The NHS are predicting this; however, medicine has advanced greatly so I have every faith we will move forward to normality much quicker. The economy NEEDS to start going again, particularly the holiday and hospitality sector. (SO many jobs depend on it) TRAFFIC ORDERS: IW Councillors have been issued with a raft of traffic orders for all over the area, Stanley Rd, Cotton Close, Ash Grove, Newport road, St Faiths, the list is large (ask your Cllr). I am trying to speak with residents to gauge their opinions. I will go with the majority when I fight/agree the outcome! BITES: You may have noticed you are being bitten a lot more than you ever have, especially early evening. Make sure you use anthisan cream and try not to scratch and infect. I have never known so many people to be affected. No evening dog walking for my pooches until these critters go away! POLICE: I hear almost daily, “no point in calling police, they do nothing”. Well, our stock is being refreshed here with 9 new recruits joining us, hopefully by the end of the year. The police have been worn down over the years with cuts after cuts; I hope this gives them the boost they need. 4
DISTANCING: More complaints over the fact people are not 2M apart in our High Streets. We MUST remember that some people are petrified of catching Covid, so try your best to give people space. (although our High Streets were never designed for 2m spacing). NO SAILGP: A huge shame, but dates and timings have not worked out. They have been paid to go to Plymouth (apparently!) MEDINA YARD: Still not a lot of movement at the site; however, huge thanks to Medina Yard chaps for sorting out a noise issue for residents. I am very grateful. PARKING GURNARD ESPLANADE: Like many of you that have contacted me, I am totally against this idea. In fact, the only people in favour seem to be the staff at IWC that came up with the scheme...to try and crawl back the £10M hole that Covid caused?! (BTW it’s illegal to use money generated from car parking for anything other than road use - apparently!!) CYCLE LANES: Beckford Road scheme. The cycle lanes have been put on hold. I understood this while we were at the peak of lockdown; however, a lot more cars are now on the roads, so I feel this is too little too late. Thanks to those residents that formed a very dynamic group in opposing the scheme. continued over the page
What’s happening in our area by ‘Local and Vocal’ Lora Peacey-Wilcox ST. ANDREWS HALL: Is currently being rented from IWC by Ellen MacArthur Trust. I was led to believe that they would consider allowing groups to use the facility in the evenings, but as yet this has not happened. I understand they have also chained off the car park, again I was not informed of this. The foundation is there temporarily while their offices are being refurbished. I will do my best to ensure we keep this VALUABLE ASSET for community use.

WHITEGATES PONTOON: Well the saga continues... My grateful thanks to the two harbour masters, Cowes and Newport who met and agreed a way forward to maintain and keep the area free of a ‘raft’ (no pun intended) of not very seaworthy craft from being stored there. We are considering putting in CCTV to the area, due to anti-social behaviour in the area also. NATURAL FREE FOOD: I hope you are making the most of the fruits around us at this time; enjoy your preserve making, thanks to those that have put out their extra produce for people to use. A generous idea and very much needed in these times. LITERARY FESTIVAL: Like everything else, it is online this year. Please look at the website for up to minute details: isleofwightliteraryfestival.com I usually make this an annual ‘time out to myself ’! As always, I know you are my extra eyes and ears, because you all contact me so much. I will get back to you, as soon as I can. lora08@sky.com is the most convenient way!

It’s Good to Have Them Back… It’s great to see the re-opening of The Friends of St Mary’s Hospital Shop. This wonderful community venture touches the lives of many. All the money they raise through the dedicated work of their volunteers is ploughed back into the hospital, buying vital equipment for patients and professionals. It’s been a tough year so far for the Friends, not just with Covid-19 but at the beginning of the year they were relocated from their prime position and had to basically start again. They may have been dealt a blow, but they have bounced back with even more determination. Their new shop is just past reception on the ground floor and not far from the main entrance to the Hospital. Over the years they have raised over £1.5 million and they want to keep building on this and desperately need your help. Please support them by using the shop at the hospital which is stocked full of goodies to tempt you - gifts, cards, news and snacks. They have not been able to re-open their cafes in outpatients, the Ryde Wellbeing Clinic and the Laidlaw Centre as Covid-19 has made this impossible for now. Their ward trolley service which also brought a smile to patients faces has also ceased operating and this has impacted hard on everyone. The staff and volunteers always remain positive and they hope that some time in the future they will be serving you tea and coffee again. They look forward to welcoming you into the shop and please support where you can. You can also donate via the many collection boxes across the island. They have supported St Mary’s staff and patients for 32 years now and with your help they can keep on doing that for another 32!

News Report from Cllr Paul Fuller - 45 Oxford Street, Northwood, PO31 8PT. Telephone: 01983 289595 - Email: paulfulleriw@gmail. Gurnard/ Cowes Seafront: Paying to Park. A very big thank you to everybody who made comments concerning the illconceived notion of removing free parking on Cowes/ Gurnard seafront. In the last few weeks, it was brilliant to receive the unanimous support of both Gurnard Parish and Cowes Town Councils (and most residents spoken to…!) Other Parking Matters. In addition to proposals above, the IW Council are also intending to implement charges at Cowes Park and Ride, as well as charging 24 hrs per day, 365 days per year in Queens Road. From my perspective I have opposed these charges from the outset when these were first tabled.
• Outside 1 and 3 Crossfield Avenue and opposite entrance to school car park. (NWAAT) • Opposite 63-67 Queens Road, Cowes. (NWAAT) • Revise to correct location 30 minute waiting opposite Parklands, Park Road, Cowes. • Between junction with Park Road to opposite 22 Place Side, Place Road, Cowes (NWAAT) • Cockleton Lane, prior to Four Cross junction parallel to 2 Pallance Road, Northwood (NWAAT) • No waiting, No loading between 8-9am and 2:30-4:30pm from 10 Woodvale Road to junction with Baring Road also to cover the existing cycle lane.
Following the above there remains locations where I know traffic restrictions are needed, these include junctions with Glen Place and Church Road in Worsley Traffic Orders. Road, and the junction with the IW A number of Health and Safety Traffic Community Club on Park Road. Despite Orders have been proposed across Cowes myself and residents nagging for these and Gurnard. These proposals are intended orders, I was disappointed to discover these to improve safety and have been applied for failed to meet Island Road’s Safety criteria. at: That said, I will continue to persevere on this • Outside 214 and 215 Baring Road, Cowes. No waiting at any time (NWAAT) Cowes Community Bus. • Outside chalets 19 and 9,10,11 The bus service now operates on Tuesdays, and 61 and 67 Marsh Road, Gurnard. Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. (NWAAT) Please note the last service from Cowes has • Opposite 13 Princes Esplanade, been withdrawn from operation, this being Gurnard (NWAAT) due to fewer school buses operating. • Opposite 182-190 Baring Road, Gurnard. (NWAAT) Following this reduction in service, I am • Baring Road opposite the discussing options with stakeholders to Debourne Manor Drive junction investigate getting this lifeline enhanced. (NWAAT). 12
News report from Cllr Paul Fuller continued SailGP Cowes has been de-selected to host SailGP Event in favour of Plymouth as the location for 2021’s event. Planning Applications. • The Dottens. A new application has been received to increase housing at The Dottens, off Baring Road. The main concerns on this application is the increase in density, the impact upon views to listed buildings at Dottens Farm and proposed loss of the ‘Environmental Area’, conditioned in the previous approval. At time of writing this report, I have called-in the application should planners consent approval. • Oil drilling Application. I continue to receive feedback on this application and support this planning application being considered in public to ensure openness and transparency. Amenity Grass. Residents approached Island Roads to undertake Grass Verge maintenance in Firs Close. Following this request Cowes Town Council has approved this transfer. From my perspective, I am in full support of this initiative, and am happy to offer further assistance if required! I am also supporting a resident of King James Close taking on orphaned land. Despite this land not being in the ownership of the IW Council, I have put the resident in touch with one of the Estate’s developers in the hope they can offer help.
Waste Updates. In recent weeks I have been approached concerning the disposal of black general waste. I am aware there remains confusion over what goes out and when. Please note most rubbish is now recyclable. Items that currently cannot be recycled and must be deposited in the black wheelie bin are: Nappies/Sanitary Products • Cling Film Animal Waste • Polystyrene • Cold Ash Plasters and Dressings • Bubble Wrap Sweet & Crisp Wrappers • Blister strips from Pill Packets • Foil Pet Food Pouches Contaminated (with food/oil) Cowes Medical Centre: Patients Participation Group. My grateful thanks and appreciation to the volunteers who were members of the Medical Centre’s Patients Participation Group, who took the decision to resign last month. From my perspective as one of the town’s four IW Councillors, I remain in touch with the Medical Centre and will give feedback information once this is received. Also, this month: • Requests have been made to Island Roads to replace felled trees in Place Road, Solent View Road and Worsley Road • Traffic Delays continue at St. Mary’s Junction. Delays will continue until work concludes at the end of this year. Updates can be found at: http:// islandroads.com/newport-st-marysstrategic-junction-improvements/ • I continue to receive feedback concerning barking dogs, left at home or in gardens when owners go to work. Please ensure that pets are not left in distress, as this can be upsetting for all concerned. 13
Local business Four Seasons Cooking Academy is owned by nutritionist and food safety specialist Michele Newton and she has some wise words for us all… “The colder months are approaching and now is the time to get your immune system fired up to help you beat any seasonal viruses that will be lurking around and to give you a fighting chance to keep yourself healthy and ready to fight whatever is thrown at you” Michele has kindly put together a few immune boosting foods and health tips to get us going. You can find more information on the Four Seasons Cookery Academy Facebook page. Tip 1. Jumbo Oats topped with Berries and a small drizzling of local Honey will keep blood sugars stable for hours. Tip 2. Please, please take a supplement from now until March at least. Even more important now. Go for a top strength tablet or spray. Many of us are low in Vitamin D, even with the lovely weather we’ve enjoyed. Tip 3. At the first sign of a cold/sore throat, make our tried & tested ‘potion’. 1/2 tsp Turmeric mixed into a paste with half a squeezed lemon and a drizzle of (preferably local) honey. Add enough hot water to make a ‘shot’ and down the hatch! Take 3 shots per day. Tip 4. Sweet potatoes contain your full daily need of Vitamin A and a third of your vitamin C requirements. Delicious baked, they will also keep your blood sugars stable. Tip 5. Garlic not only strengthens the immune system, but also has antibacterial properties. Tip 6. Vitamin C is essential for a strong immune system. Our body doesn’t store or produce it so include a variety of items daily, such as oranges and orange juice, peppers, kiwi fruit, broccoli, blackcurrants, strawberries and bananas. Tip 7. Green tea - rich in antioxidants - substances that can slow - or prevent - damage to our cells. Try to have 2 cups a day. The mint flavoured one is lovely. Tip 8. Dark Chocolate (+70%) is superb for our immune system. It contains iron, magnesium, manganese, potassium, zinc and selenium - alongside being a powerful antioxidant. Melt a few squares into hot milk to make a delicious - and nutritious - hot chocolate. Tip 9. Kiwi fruit has a packed list of nutrients. Exciting studies are starting to show that 5 per week can reduce asthma induced wheezing. Wow! Tip 10. WELLBEING...... we have all been sorely ‘tested’ this year and this lowers our immune systems for sure. Talk to family/friends about how you’re feeling; exercise and try to take each day as it comes. 14
