utumn is approaching and the island is a beautiful place to be during this season. The changes in nature will be visible around every corner and there are so many wonderful walks to enjoy. You really can’t beat island life!

The island has been very busy this year with visitors from the mainland, some are regulars, but many have ventured here for the first time, and I am constantly hearing how lucky we are to live here, to have this on our doorsteps every day... but it does make me wonder if having it here right under our noses we forget the beauty and just take it for granted. I am now going to go about my business with my eyes slightly wider open to take in all the beauty that is right here in front of me. In this issue you will find local news and information for your area, mixed with advertising, features, editorials and of course our puzzle pages which I know many of you are a big fan of. As always thank you for picking up a copy and I’d love to hear your thoughts on anything featured in this month’s issue and please do get in touch with me if you have any news to share or are organising an event. I hope you have a safe and happy month and I look forward to catching up with you again soon.

An Alzheimer Café is a meeting place giving informal education about dementia, guidance and signposting to other services. We welcome people with dementia, their families, carers, professionals and anyone with an interest in dementia.

What is an Alzheimer Café? An Alzheimer Café is a meeting place that provides informal education and information about the issues surrounding dementia. Alzheimer Cafés welcome everyone who has an interest in dementia; people with dementia, their families and friends and people in the community, who would like to learn more about dementia. Alzheimer Cafés provide an informal, safe, and sensitive environment for, sharing feelings, giving, and receiving support and guidance, and provides the opportunity to make new friends with people in similar situations.

The Alzheimer Café Team will give you a warm welcome, ‘a listening ear’, provide refreshments and signpost people to other services and agencies, where appropriate, to access information and services. There is no need to book to attend an Alzheimer Café, you are welcome to come along to any of the Cafés across the Island (ACE7 is for younger people with dementia aged 45-65 years). There is no charge – but we welcome donations in the orange collection boxes. (Booking is only necessary when Covid-19 restrictions apply.) News Report from Cllr Paul Fuller - for Cowes West & Gurnard Tel: 01983 289595/07935 090835 - Email: paulfulleriw@gmail.com Lower Church Road proposed development. Ref:21/01442/OUT Following the concerns expressed by residents and Gurnard Parish Council, I have called-in the outline proposal to develop land north of Gurnard Farm. This I have asked is considered by the Planning Committee should officers feel inclined to approve this application. Full details for my call-in request can be found on my website, but in summary, the reasons given are: 1. The Principle of any Development on this site. 2. Concerns over the proposal being outside the Settlement Boundary. 3. Concerns that the proposal does not constitute ‘sustainable’. 4. Alternative locations were outlined in the Gurnard Neighbourhood Plan. 5. The impact the proposal will have upon the landscape characteristic of Gurnard Farm, Rew Street and Cockleton Lane. 69 Solent Road - To update, the formal decision on this replacement dwelling is ongoing. Following feedback, an ecology report was requested, and I am advised most recently the Planning Chairman visited the site. Speeding Traffic - Speedwatch Volunteers visited Worsley Road to gauge traffic speeds in Gurnard Village Centre. In Place Road, Island Roads have advised they see no justification for altering and updating speed reductions. Following this, the police have been asked by myself and Cllr Nicholson to monitor speeds.

Highway Weeds and Grass cutting - Councillors continue to receive complaints from residents regarding the spread of weeds on pavements, roadsides, and grass verges. This follows cuts in last years’ budgets as well as Island Roads seeking alternatives in using glyphosate. At the moment the man with the hoe is not seen to be fit for purpose and because of complaints alternatives are being considered. With respect to grass cutting (again incorporated within this year’s budget), amenity grass is now being cut at the statutory minimum levels specified by the Government. This together with the mild, wet summer is an issue that is of concern that requires resolving. Jordan Culvert, Shore Road - Following storms and an email of support from the EA, a request was made to Island Roads to remove the grill from the Jordan culvert beneath Shore Road. This will allow for an increased flow of storm water thus reducing flood risk in the area. Flooding averted? - Prior to the flooding last month, I contacted the highway drainage department of Island Roads to request that gullies in Egypt Hill, Marsh Road, Solent View Road and Princes Esplanade were clear of debris. In the meantime, Southern Water have appealed to residents to keep drainage systems fat and wet wipe clear. Energy Bills - OFGEN has reported that for 15 million Energy Customers, bills will continued over the page

News report from Cllr Paul Fuller continued increase as from 1st October. This follows an increase to the Fuel Cap which OFGEN negotiates with energy supplies At the moment to counter these increases a number of independent search engines can help customers get the best deal. These include: www.moneysavingexpert.com and www.uswitch.com. Tel: 0800 688 8557

• A reduction from 1045 houses per annum to 486. • The Affordable Home criteria was reduced from 80% of market value of private and rented accommodation to a local 50-60% because of the Isle of Wight’s special circumstances

Bathing Water - Last month a meeting took place between the MP, the IW Council’s Cabinet and Southern Water following concerns raised regarding pollution and the impact this is having upon bathing water.

• Hard Settlement Boundaries, meaning no future ‘adjacent to sites’ unless exceptions apply. • Support for policies that prevent land banking • Increase protection for Green Gaps and Biodiversity.

Following the meeting, Southern Water has offered assurances to colleagues of further investment to cope with ongoing issues. This liaison continues between the IW Council Cabinet and Southern Water.

E-Scooters - More unruly e-scooter riders using scooters in Shooters Hill and Cowes High Street have been reported and more visible enforcement has been requested to the police.

It was interesting to note after feedback from the Cabinet Member responsible and from Southern Water themselves that despite overflows discharging; evidence suggests bathing water is clearer than ever of pollutants and it was stated that complaints are as a result of more openness. Draft Island Planning Strategy Throughout September, I have spent most of my time as the Planning Cabinet Member on the road, visiting Parish Councils, Libraries, and sessions with stakeholders. During this time, I have listened to and spoken to around 500 residents concerning development from 2023 until 2038. A few of the headlines within the Plan are:

Being silly by Maggie Currie As children we have an instinctual grasp of humour and appreciate all that is silly as a matter of course. Even the smallest absurdities provoke joyous gales of giggles or laughter. As we get older, this innate ability to see the value of silliness can diminish. Work takes precedence over play, and we seem to have less incentive to exercise our imaginative minds by focusing on what is funny. When we remember childhood, we may recall the pleasures of dressing up in funny costumes, reciting nonsense poems, making up strange games, or playing pretend. This unabashed silliness nourished our vitality and creativity. We can take in this nourishment once again by giving ourselves permission to lighten up and be silly. Too often we believe it serves no purpose to encourage our inherent silliness that is an inborn aspect of self. We may believe it is at odds with the grown-up culture of maturity. We play yet we don’t lose ourselves in play, and our imaginations are never truly given free reign because we regard the products of irrational creativity as being valueless. Yet silliness itself constitutes a vital part of human existence on many levels. Our first taste of ethereal bliss is often a consequence of our willingness to dabble in what we deem outrageous, nonsensical, or absurd. We delight in ridiculousness not only because laughter is intrinsically pleasurable, but also because it serves as a reminder that existence itself is fun. Skipping, doodling, and singing funny songs are no less entertaining than they were when we were children. We need not lose all interest in these cheerful and amusing activities, but to make them a part of our lives we must be ready to sacrifice a little dignity and a lot of fear. Silliness should be regarded as a priority because so much of life is inescapably serious. Through the magic of imagination, you can be or become anything–a photographer, a professional athlete, a dancer, a pilot. Whether you take hundreds of silly pictures, revel in the adulation of your fans as you make the winning catch, boogie down rock-star style in front of your bedroom mirror, or turn your desk into a cockpit, the ensuing hilarity will help you see that light-hearted fun and adulthood are not at all incompatible. If this has resonated with you in any way, please get in touch. I offer coaching and mentoring to you – for you to make the changes you want to in your life. Build your confidence in your abilities. To help you to have more fun, more freedom and less stress. That is it. There is no catch. I believe in you. Get in touch today to book your coaching sessions.

It’s Goatober The Isle of Wight’s very first Goatober launched in 2019, in an effort to raise awareness of goat meat, milk, cheese and fudge produced on the Island. Kingston Smallholding Goat Farm, Green Barn Dairy Goat Farm, plus several butchers, meat wholesalers and shops encouraged islanders and a wide range of catering outlets to add goat products to their menus throughout the month of October.

Goat is the most commonly eaten red meat in the world, as many cultures do not eat beef or pork. Goat meat makes up around 60% of the red meat produced worldwide and yet in countries such as the UK – where the wool and lamb trade has dominated – it has always been one of the much lesser consumed meats. However, because of increasing ethnic diversity it is starting to become far more readily available. Nestling between Shorwell and Chale Green, is Kingston Smallholding Goat Farm, owned by Simone and David. They started off with a small herd of Golden Guernsey dairy goats and Pygmy goats, and then bought some Boer meat goats. Goat meat has been available on the Island for a number of years, but commercial production has not been regularly maintained. After obtaining EHO approval a few years ago, with the help of a number of Island butchers, they tempted a few select pubs and restaurants with their goat meat, which have been added to their menu or to their specials boards. All reported great interest from diners and despite covid interruptions - consumption rates on the Island continue to rise quite rapidly. Islanders are being encouraged to try adding goat meat to their menus. To place an order, book a smallholding visit or arrange a Goatober presentation in 2021, ring Simone or David on 01983 551527. 9

Last month’s front cover of the tractor received lots of compliments and my inside story about my love of tractors caught the attention of one local resident, Geoff Horsnell, who contacted me to tell me about his ‘pride and joy’ and invited me over to meet the old girl!

Client Parking Private Chapel of Rest Personal Service Pre-Paid Funeral Plans

Geoff is the proud owner of a Fordson Super Major and brought her in 2017 from a farm in Steeple Ashton, where she had sat for many years unused but thankfully covered over. She is still in her natural colours, as she would have been when she came off the factory line (Empire Blue for everything but the wheels which are Fordson Orange), obviously she has one or two marks on her but what 60-year-old hasn’t? Her engine purrs and she is in great shape. Geoff does the odd favour for his neighbour by topping one of her fields ensuring she keeps in good working order. This tractor is affectionately called ‘The Beast’ and this name came about after her recent cameo role in a drama that was filmed on the Island. She was spotted by a location scout who happened to see her sitting on the driveway and after photos were sent to the Director, she was offered a scene in the drama ‘The Beast Must Die’. On the day of filming, her scene took place on the road leading down from The Needles New Battery and involved her having a very near miss with an Aston Martin being driven by the leading lady. Meeting ‘The Beast’ really made my day and having a ride on her made my year!
