The biggest event in September may be the Bestival but there are still other events happening across the Island and you can find more details on the ‘Dates for your Diary’ on pages 10 and 11. This months issue is once again packed with news, events, advertisers and feature editorials. What’s happening in our area by ‘local and vocal’ Lora Peacey-Wilcox BERNARD TAYLOR: Many of us will be saddened by the passing of our lovely Bernard. Such a good supporter of all that is Cowes; he will be greatly missed. MAXTED CLOSE NATURE/PLAY SPACE: Well done to everyone for the absolutely lovely play space for local residents; Eve from Spectrum was instrumental in bringing the project to fruition. It was lovely to catch up with so many residents. FISHING ON IW: I have received a rather good email document giving advice on fishing. I can email to you, so please contact me. JOHN NASH TOWER: I was honoured to attend the commemoration of 200 years of the J.N. Tower at St.Marys Church. It was a lovely service and the crowning glory was the incredible replica tower made entirely of flowers. It even had working clocks. Well done and thank you, to all that made the event so special. It was especially wonderful to meet back up with Rev. Canon John Bean. FERRIS WHEEL: I received a number of queries about the Wheel being located right next to apartments on Medina Road. My thanks for the understanding of residents, and the support from the Harbour Commission. MEDINA YARD: The application is live, and I am here to listen to your comments. Please get in touch.
POOR PARKING: I have received complaints from public about people trying to fit cars onto front gardens but actually overhanging the pavement. In some cases it has been so bad, no pedestrian could walk on the pavement. This is a parking violation and I have asked the Police to patrol the areas.
4
JET SKIS: I received complaints about the inconsiderate users of these off Gurnard Green. It was a hot, sunny night and many children were out swimming; with the sun bouncing off the water it was very difficult for worried parents to watch the children. While Jet Skis are great fun, please remember to use them safely. ST.MARYS HOSPITAL: How many beds are there at St.Marys? I thought around 700!! You might be surprised, like I was to know there are just 200, with an additional 50 for mental health patients. The need to try to avoid people going into hospital is crucial. We all need to help. Start thinking about our elderly relatives/friends and how we can assist them to make their homes suitable to avoid falls, eating healthy, keeping well. It is estimated that for one day in hospital it can take a week in rehabilitation. We need to think NOW about suitable homes for life... BEACON CENTRE: We need to be aware that this facility is for URGENT CARE. As residents we need to use 111, and use pharmacies far more. Please think before you decide to go up and use this very valuable resource. ON PENSION CREDIT?: You may be able to have a reduction/help with your water bill: call 0800 0270363 COWES LIBRARY: The brilliant team down there having come up with some interesting events: From Knitting Korner, Philo Cafe, Huxleys magic hub and The Games Club. Please contact the library for dates for any of the events. Tel: 293341 SPEED WATCH: If you see me out on the road with clip board in hand, it is to study the speed of traffic in areas raised by YOU, the people living here. We make anyone
What’s happening in our area by ‘local and vocal’ Lora Peacey-Wilcox speeding aware of it by sending them a letter; and actually it is very interesting to sort the ‘perceived speed to actual speed’... Hillcroft Building & Maintenance By Richard Poulter At Hillcroft Building & Maintenance we work with many landlords and letting agents to help them maintain and improve their properties, providing a reliable income and a healthy return on their investment. One subject that often crops up when talking to landlords is how to find a good tenant. Over the years we have come up with the following tips to help you find someone who will love your property as much as you do.
"The Reliable Choice" • Kitchens & Bathrooms • Bespoke Timber Buildings & Decking • Flat Roofing • Plastering & Decorating • Driveways • Extensions & Conversions • Carpentry & Joinery • Structural Alterations • Fascias/Gutters • Full House / Flat Renovations

1. Check References. Don’t just take them actually check them as well! 2. Meet The Tenant. A face to face meeting is the best way to start any relationship. 3. Always Use A Contract. This is vital, even if you know the tenants, always protect yourself with a contract. Standard contracts are available and don’t have to be expensive. 4. Maintain The Property. Remember if you don’t look after your property the tenants won’t either. One of the biggest reasons for tenancies ending prematurely is unaddressed maintenance issues. 5. Trust Your Instincts. If you’re not sure there’s probably a reason why. These tips should help you find the right tenant for you and take the stress out of letting your property. For advice on how to maintain or improve your property call Richard @ Hillcroft Building & Maintenance on 07980 227 307

Get more out of life with the Oddfellows. Eating out, day trips, group holidays, tea parties and a good old fashioned chat, why not check out what your local Oddfellows can do for you. First formed in 1810, the Oddfellows is a not-for-profit friendly society with 240,000 members across 139 branches nationwide. Open to everyone and all ages, its aim is to help people join together to enjoy the social side of life as well as providing care, advice and support in times of need. There are four branches on the mainland and one on the Isle of Wight. Based in Newport, Isle of Wight, the VECTA branch is a friendly group who put on a host of social events for its members. Barbara Jackson, Secretary for the Southampton District, stated, ‘’We’re a friendly bunch and we are always looking for new faces to join us. Membership is just £30 a year and you get so much out of it. From social gatherings to support when you really need it, the Oddfellows is all about friendship and having a good time.’’
Each year, at their AGM, members nominate charities, that branch will support for that year. This year those nominated were, H & IoW Air Ambulance, R.N.L.I, Royal British Legion, Naomi House, Southampton Hospital P.I.C.U. Oakhaven Hospice, Rose Road Association, National Federation for the Blind, South Hampshire Deaf Childrens Fund, Sholing Valley Study Centre, MacMillians Cancer Relief, Gosport & Fareham Inshore Rescue, Orphans Gift Fund. VECTA branch charities were YMCA Young Carers and Alzheimers Society. A charity particular to the Oddfellows is the H.A. Andrews Memorial Fund. To date the fund has supported 18 projects, with sums totalling £760,000. At this years AGM of the society, it was agreed to give £88,000 over the next 3 years to explore ‘’Exploiting the hair follicle as the preferential source of wound healing cells in human skin’’. Each year members are asked to submit research projects, outside the main charities, ie, Cancer Research etc, and one of these is chosen. For more details or to get involved, please contact Barbara Jackson, on 01329 313077 or email bjackson761@btinternet.com

News Report from Independent Isle of Wight Cllr Paul Fuller - 74 Wyatts Lane, Cowes, PO31 8QA. Telephone: 01983 289595 - Email: paulfulleriw@gmail.com Public Footpaths - The IW Council are currently consulting on making the Islands Public Rights Of Way better. This continues until 16th September. Please visit www.iwight.com/consultations> www.iwight. com/consultations for details. Following a landslip the footpath CS4 linking Battery Road and Egypt Esplanade has been closed. Ground movement continues to be monitored, and the footpath will be reinstated once movement has stabilised. Discussions will take place this month between Natural England and Rights Of Way on the England Coast Path and the role and responsibilities for the Isle of Wight. I am positive that discussions will soon take place between residents and landowners affected. The future for the Isle of Wight Council: Your views sought! - A number of residents regularly asked me what is devolution, and will the Isle of Wight really be absorbed into Hampshire in the coming years? Without me pre-judging what residents think, there is an ongoing consultation underway through a ‘Solent Deal’ partnership with our neighbouring Southampton and Portsmouth Unitary Authorities. This consultation continues until 18th September. To find out more and take part please visit: www.solentdeal.co.uk/> www.solentdeal.co.uk
Hedgerows - Please continue to report overgrown hedgerows! Now the bird nesting season has concluded action is underway to deal with the consequences of this year’s growing season. With Rights Of Way, these are taking longer than usual. In the meantime, please keep in touch and let me know of any issues which you are aware of! Double Yellow Lines - In the last few years I’ve received a number of requests for double yellow lines- But are there locations where double yellow exist, where you feel they are no longer needed? If so, please let me know! Planning Applications - Planning Applications for a new boat store in Marsh Road was conditionally approved. Following representations received, Planning Officers have confirmed the ridge height to not exceed 4.5m. On the former Gurnard school site in Cockleton Lane conditions have been amended to remove the pedestrian access to link the new development with Hilton Road. This follows comments from both myself, Gurnard Parish Council and Island Roads who raised concerns about this. On this matter Planning Officers considered these grounds were unsustainable to call-in this decision. One proposal to redevelop a property in Shore Road was conditionally approved, whilst another more controversial application was refused by Planners.
In advance of the holiday season the Council was persuaded to empty its bins on Gurnard Green daily, whilst I also required support from I met with residents from Marine View Close concerned with an application for nearby Environment Officers following an increase in Queens Road. This proposal has been beach parties this year. withdrawn by the applicant, and I’m ever hopeful that dialogue can take place between In addition during the summer the Marine Police were notified following jet-skiers coming the applicant and neighbours affected. in close to swimmers on our local beaches at both Cowes and Gurnard. 12
There are a number of ongoing Planning Enforcement matters currently being pursued both in Cowes and in Gurnard.
News Report from Cllr Paul Fuller Enquiries are ongoing at Gurnard Pines, where a number of residential occupancies are alleged to be taking place in dwellings consented for tourism/ holiday only use. Highways Matters - Ward Avenue was reinstated ahead of schedule, whilst footway resurfacing is pending for Lammas Close and King James Close. Elsewhere, I’ve received an initial confirmation from Island Roads that Shore Road is due to be resurfaced ‘mid- October’, whilst I’m awaiting a confirmation for a start date for Parklands Avenue. Street Naming: New Development, Place Road. I’ve been approached by the developers of new homes to be built off Place Road. Standing by their commitment to engage with the local community, they have asked me, to ask for suggestions from the community to help potentially name roads for this new development. Initial suggestions put forward include West Solent Park, as the name for the new development, whilst Old Oak Road, West Point Road, Wild Cherry Road/Drive are suggested as names for roads. The developers will market this as a prestigious housing scheme and they have requested that names should reflect this. They also suggest referencing the church and its spire, on the opposite of the Jordan Valley. If you have alternative ideas for the name of this new development and its roads, please let me know and I will forward these to developers and Gurnard Parish Council. As an added incentive, the developers are offering 3 x £50 meal vouchers at local restaurants for the best suggestions! The deadline for suggestions is 12 noon, Monday 5th September.
