Style and Comfort Over 25 years of experience, yet still keeping up to date with the latest styles, fashions and colours and all done in the comfort of your own home. Kirsty is a senior stylist and originally trained at Jaks in Newport where she stayed for a further 3 years. She then took time out to travel the world and settled back into Island life when she started her family. Kirsty decided not to go back to salon work and instead became a mobile hairdresser as she enjoys taking the stress out of having your hair done by visiting her clients at their home so they can relax and enjoy the experience. As well as specialising in wedding hair, Kirsty, is just as happy to offer family appointments, which makes life so much easier than trying to get the family to the hairdresser or barber.

Welcome and thank you for picking up the latest issue of Island Magazines. We have had some glorious sunshine and quite a heatwave so far this summer but at the time of writing this it’s raining... and although I’m not keen on rain it was very much needed, but let’s hope the sun will be back shortly. The summer holidays seem to have flown by and the Island has been packed with visitors enjoying all the wonderful delights our rock has to offer. It never ceases to amaze me when I come across visitors who seem in awe of the fact that we live here and have everything the Island has to offer right under our noses. It’s comments like this that make me glad to call this home. As usual this issue is packed with local news, features, advertisers and much more and you can find details of events happening throughout September by going to the ‘Dates for your Diary’ section on pages 8 and 9. I hope you all enjoy this issue and always feel free to get in touch and share your thoughts. Until next month...

YOGA

My Yoga Classes by Judith Didham

I teach a form of Yoga known as Hatha, which combines stretching the body with good breathing techniques. Many people might have great stamina and fitness but do not necessarily have flexibility and suppleness – and this is where Yoga can help enormously. Don’t be fooled by its apparent gentleness as you will go away from a class feeling as though you have really stretched your body fully. With more efficient breathing, your muscles will benefit from increased oxygen and be able to stretch safely whilst at the same time the toxins in your body are more easily expelled. The overall effect will leave you feeling relaxed, calm and less stressed. My classes suit beginners and those with more experience alike. Please visit my website (www. judithdidham.co.uk) for further details on Yoga. You are also welcome to phone me to book a place at one of my Yoga classes or to chat if you have any queries. My number is 01983 716144. You’ll also find me on Facebook – Judith Didham Yoga.

News Report from Cllr Paul Fuller - 74 Wyatts Lane, Cowes, PO31 8QA. Telephone: 01983 289595 - Email: paulfulleriw@gmail.com Planning Applications. The Watersedge Planning Application was referred to the August Planning Committee meeting. Regrettably because of holidays, I was not able to attend and provided a statement to the Committee outlining residents’ concerns to this Planning Application. Many thanks to Gurnard Parish Council Chair, Cllr. Ginny Orrey and Planning Consultant, Martha James for echoing residents views. Also of concern is the planning application for 66 new homes between Newport Road and Oxford Street in Northwood. I have made representations to Northwood Parish Council regarding the impact upon the main road to/from Newport and health provision in the Cowes area. I have also contacted Planners regarding concerns raised at Shore Path and Baring Road. Environmental Health and Policing: Bins and Rubbish. Thank you to Parks and Beaches for providing Barbecue signage, clearance of drainage ditches, bigger bins and new bollards for Gurnard Green. These works are, and have been greatly appreciated! Residents can apply to have wheeled bins collected from an agreed point, such as the side of your house. This service is available for £60 per year. Details of the Collection Plus Service can be found at www.iow.gov.uk/ Residents/Waste-and-Recycling/HouseholdWaste-and-Recycling-Collection/OtherCollection-Services. 6

The Red Biffa Bin in Shore Road, Gurnard has been taken away, this is due to more and more residents using this bin to fly tip their rubbish! Environmental Health and Policing: Parties. In Gurnard, at this time of year, I receive a number of complaints concerning gatherings being held on the beach between The Marsh and the Sailing Club. Please note that Spencer’s Copse is privately owned, and action can be taken by the authorities when trees in this TPO’ed area are damaged. In addition, criminal damage to properties/ sheds/ summer houses that back on to this beach, remains in private ownership and local residents advise me that action can and will be pursued! Beach Huts. Proposals to increase Beach Hut fees, remain under consideration. I met with Cllr Hutchinson, and am advised that after feedback, some of the suggestions made will be proposals outlined to owners in the coming months. From my perspective, I support enhanced fees being introduced to residents without an Isle of Wight address. Orchard proposal, The Green, Cowes. Following feedback, proposals for an orchard off Crossfield Avenue, are on hold following investigation for a community orchard elsewhere to be considered. Please let me know if you have any suggestions? Cowes Week. Please let me know your thoughts on the Cowes Week Parking Order!

News report from Cllr Paul Fuller continued Complaints concerning overnight parking on the seafront, and early parking restrictions for residents in Cowes West and Gurnard were much fewer. Residents have complained to me concerning vehicular access to the butchers in Cowes, whilst taxi operators and residents have complained about access to the red jet terminal. This is something that I am taking up with the IW Council in the hope common sense can prevail both this year and for future orders. I have received complaints also about overfilled bins. When I investigated I noticed that many adjacent bins and the extra ‘Event Bins’ were not overfilled. When this is the case, please use bins with space! Please note to reduce disruption, Island Roads are clearing bins late evening and early morning in town. Full Council. At Full Council I supported proposals for the Boundary Review. This will follow a formal consultation later this year. I also supported proposals for an Isle of Wight Biosphere. I did not support proposals put by the administration applauding certain individuals and the current administration for enhancing our education system. As far as I am concerned the improvements are a long term initiative by the whole of the Council and officers from both the Isle of Wight, parents, students and teachers to improve education standards. I also opposed supporting the £400k Isle of Wight Council Management restructure. This was due to funds being cut from frontline public services elsewhere.

What’s happening in our area by ‘Local and Vocal’ Lora Peacey-Wilcox NHS DENTISTS: I have been campaigning daily since rumours got out over the closure of the Cowes practice. I will not give up without a fight. Trying to get to the bottom of WHY somerset is not renewing their contract and HOW I can help to keep it open. Working with MP and Cabinet member to ensure people are not left without a NHS dentist. All alternatives are now full and have extensive waiting lists. I will continue to fight until every option has been explored. RESIDENT PARKING ZONES: I have been contacted by MANY residents over the report in the IWCP about RPZ. I have been requested (and in some cases by 99% of residents) to request that Bridge Rd, Thetis, York, Pelham and South all be included in any forthcoming zones for the area. As I have stated NUMEROUS times, it does not ensure you have a space anywhere outside, or even in your road. More permits are sold than there are spaces... if you think most homes have 2 cars, and most people can’t fit one car outside, you can understand the situation. FLOATYFINDER.COM: wow, great idea!! A real time up to minute details of where the floating bridge is. EXCELLENT initiative! look them up!! www.floatyfinder.com BALL PLAYING: I received complaints of kids playing ball games against peoples back fences. As you can imagine the noise is great and disturbing. Ask kids to be considerate when playing. While no one wants to stop, the noise and damage to peoples properties must be thought of. CARERS IW: Do you look after someone who would struggle to manage without you? 10

7 Reasons to use Local Solicitors when buying or selling a property: •

Local solicitors know the area, they know the estate agents, independent surveyors and tradespeople. An internet conveyancer can never provide this specialised local knowledge. If unforeseen difficulties arise you, as a buyer or seller, need to be kept informed and advised. Local solicitors will be able to explain situations plainly and face-to-face. Local solicitors will keep their promises, regularly keep in touch, return phone calls and provide a good and efficient service. They’ll go that extra mile to ensure your complete satisfaction, as their client testimonials prove. Local solicitors will quote you a price which will take into account the costs of all searches, Land Registry fees and other disbursements. Many online firms will quote a very competitive price, but add in extras which may make them more expensive! Most local solicitors will complete the Stamp Duty Land Transaction Return Form free of charge. Some online firms will charge extra and extra again for acting for your Mortgage Company and extra again if you need to complete within 10 days of exchanging contracts. The price quoted by a local solicitor may not be the cheapest but you are buying a service and what they give you is value for your money. Using Local solicitors will establish a relationship that can last a lifetime.
