Welcome to the September issue of Island Magazines. I can’t believe we are here already as it only feels like a couple of weeks ago that summer started.
text or call Island Magazines on 07880 587 931
We have some beautiful landscapes on the Island and there’s nothing better than a field of hay bales, wheat or sweetcorn. Just travel less than five minutes from any town centre and you will be in the midst of the countryside with fields of all varying colours and crops.
islandmagazines@gmail.com www.islandmagazines.co.uk facebook.com/islandmagazines
No doubt like me you have noticed the tractors, trailers and balers out in force going backwards and forwards at all hours of the day while they frantically work to harvest the crops.
twitter.com/islandmagazines Island Magazines Mailbox No 4, Unit B1 Whitecross Business Centre Whitecross Lane Shanklin, IOW, PO37 7EJ
I’ve always had a keen liking for tractors so I don’t mind coming across them on the roads. I always add extra time to my journey at this time of the year and rather than stress I can relax and enjoy the views over some of the most picturesque landscapes in the country. This month we are giving a BIG shout out on behalf of Feline Welfare and some of their residents who are looking for their forever homes. Read more about them on page 10. I hope you all have a great September and enjoy the last few weeks of summer...

News Report from Cllr Paul Fuller - 45 Oxford Street, Northwood, PO31 8PT. Telephone: 01983 289595 - Email: paulfulleriw@gmail.com Isle of Wight Community Club - Following feedback from a licensing request to make life simpler for the club, it was agreed there will be little change to current arrangements. The club will continue to close at 11pm (to midnight on Fridays and Saturdays, when functions take place). Fly-tipping. - Three counts of fly-tipping took place in Tuttons Hill. On the third occasion a resident was identified, and details were reported. Bucklers View - I am anticipating a modified application regarding proposals. I am advised that Southern Housing have accepted concerns raised over scale, height, design and landscaping. In response, I’m advised this will be incorporated in revised plans, which I have asked will incorporate a contribution to improve pedestrian access to facilities in Gurnard.
and homes planned to be built, should be prioritised as one or two bedroomed properties affordable and downsizeable for local people. Floodlighting, Cowes Enterprise College Drones were used to monitor and assess floodlighting at Cowes College in advance of the Autumn. I am advised that floodlighting the MUGA is conditioned to be turned off at 10pm. However, following complaints by Ward Avenue residents, I am advised the college will rarely have the lights on beyond 9pm. Japanese Knotweed and Ragwort - I have been approached by residents concerning the spread of these weeds onto their property. With the Japanese Knotweed incident the landowner has been approached with treatment pending. With Ragwort, I request landowners to be vigilant due to the impact this has upon livestock. Unlike Japanese Knotweed landowners under the Weeds Act 1959 have no requirement to prevent this weed from spreading.
Woodvale Drive - An application to build a new dwelling in Woodvale Drive has been withdrawn by the applicant. This follows several concerns raised by residents who I have been working alongside and supporting. St Mary’s Roundabout - I am advised that the IW Council will be feeding back information on the 15 month project to West View Road - Following sale of reconfigure the St Mary’s Roundabout, which agricultural plots, I have been approached starts the end of September. Although, by residents concerned by applications for residential use beyond existing building lines. I have offered to facilitate a residents information event, I am advised this is in the These continue to be monitored. hands of the IWC and Island Roads. Housing Numbers - I attended a public meeting hosted by Northwood Parish Council with the MP, who I have supported in challenging the 641 annual housing figure proposed for the Island. Like the MP, I consider this number to be unsustainable 4
Full Council - with most Councillors I supported motions on declaring climate change concerns and supported petitions received concerned with our Island’s Mental Health Service and highway safety at Vittlefields Cross.

News report from Cllr Paul Fuller continued Consultation on Concessionary Travel Scheme Changes - A consultation is taking place on potential changes to the Island’s concessionary travel scheme and use by disabled residents and their companions before 9:30am and after 11pm. The consultation continues until the 8th October 2019. For details please visit: www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/ ConcessionaryTravelSchemeConsultation PLEASE LET ME KNOW YOUR THOUGHTS, ON: (Section 106) Developer Contributions. IW Councillors, and Town/Parish Councillors will be approached by Planners who are asking for community priorities, that are linked to prospective new developments in their area. Suggestions that I have made are: In general: Improved bus frequency (Service 32) and access to medical treatment.
Road); Footway connection to The Range from Four Cross. In Cowes: Improved dropped kerbs (Park Road); Footpath and Play Area enhancements (Northwood Recreation Ground); Improved enhancement of grass verges (Crossfield Estate) and Public Slipways. Please let me know your priorities on these, before Monday 30th September. These will be fed back to both Gurnard Parish Council and Cowes Town Council. Car Parking: 200 new spaces for 2020 - I am campaigning to identify 200 Cowes car parking spaces for next year. These spaces can be on-street, off-street, private, public and can involve reconfiguring existing space and removing double yellow lines where they are no longer needed. Island Roads have confirmed their support to work with myself and Cowes Town Council. If you know of a space that can be better utilised please let me know!
In Gurnard: Improved mobility access to local shops in Worsley Road as well as improved access to the beach and bus stops (esp. Roundhouse); Improvements to public toilets, (Gurnard Green); Enhancement of existing play/recreation facilities (at Gurnard Green and potentially Old School Meadow); Improved street lighting (Albert 5

West Wight Pet Lifeline West Wight Pet Lifeline, based in Freshwater, not only provides an emergency service for lost, stray or unattended pets in distress across the West Wight area, they also offer an island wide response service for certain types of wildlife casualties, these being the larger or more dangerous species that the public would not be expected to handle, such as foxes, badgers and swans. Recent calls that the group have been involved with include the trapping, neutering and return/rehoming of a colony of stray cats around Golden Hill Fort, with four adults and six kittens all having been taken into care over the last few weeks. They have also been involved with searching for lost dogs, scanning found dogs for microchips and reuniting them with their owners and attending seriously sick and injured stray cats in need of immediate veterinary care.

Feline Welfare Isle of Wight
Registered Charity: 1084722
Feline Welfare have lots of adorable guests staying with them and all these gorgeous cats are looking for love and a place to call home. They range from 12 weeks up to 13 years of age and they all deserve safe, genuine homes with people who REALLY care. Some have had a sad start to their lives so will need time, patience and understanding, but even those who are timid initially learn to trust you and will be WONDERFUL pets. Here are just a few of the really special ones that want you to pick up the phone and call so you can come and meet them. Call anytime on 521778 For more in-depth information about each cat you can visit their website www.felinewelfareiow.co.uk. If you are unable to adopt or foster but would still like to help please consider making a donation to them in order that they can keep doing the good work that they do. You will find all the info on the website. Sylvester has had a tough start to his little life, but he is surprisingly confident all things considered. He is used to being with a large group of cats so would like to go to a home with one or two friendly felines. He will be timid initially but with love, patience and time he will become your friend for life. Vinnie is a mainly white boy and is 13 years young. He is a loving boy and needs a caring home in a safe area. He has always been a single pet and would like to keep it this way as he wants his own personal 'human slave’. He is very affectionate and just LOVES human company. He recently had surgery to remove part of his ear flap. He has recovered well and is raring to go !!!! Rupert (tabby/white) is 6 years old and he is very affectionate. He does get on with other cats but he may well take over his humans lock, stock and barrel, so more than one lap is essential!!! Rupert is such a contented boy and wants a home to call his own. Meet Lloyd (black/white) and Harry (white/black). These gorgeous boys are 2 years old and they are looking for a loving home where they can stay together. They are neutered and vaccinated and really are ready to start their new life in a safe and loving home. They are REALLY affectionate boys and will make gorgeous pets for their new ‘parents’ or should we say ‘human slaves’ !!!! 10
Garfield is looking for a loving, safe new home with someone who really cares. He is 9 years young and he needs a home as an only pet. He has recently had a tough time but he is still happy and content with life and has plenty of love to give.

What’s happening in our area by ‘Local and Vocal’ Lora Peacey-Wilcox COWES WEEK: Well done to everyone that came together to ensure Cowes Week 2019 happened despite loss of title sponsor. I received complaints from a number of residents about lack of parking, and disabled parking; The GP sailing really did attract HUGE numbers to the beach area (no charge for that!) With only 6 races in their calendar they CHOSE to come to Cowes. Bringing crews and supporters who financially flooded the town, knock on effect is positive for all the local people working the extra hours and days. KINGS CUP: Fingers crossed that the event will be staged here again next year...nothing like a Royal to bring the crowds out! And delightful they were too! MILLION DOLLAR BASH: Sat. 31st August.
