Welcome to the September issue which marks a special day for Island Magazines. You can find out more on page 4. I don’t think anyone can say we haven’t had a summer - at the time of writing this we have just come out of a heatwave and I like many others are thankful for the drop in temperature. It was at such an unbearable level but like with many things this year we got through it!!! I always rave about the wonderful scenic views and the countryside on the island. Just a five-minute trip out of any town centre and you will be greeted by fields and countryside of varying shades from the recently sown to the just harvested. I like nothing more than watching the tractors and machinery working the land, there is something calming about watching them cut, dry, turn and bale hay. I know some people do not like being behind tractors and trailers on the road but I think they are a great sight to see and at the end of the day they are only doing their job like we all are. This month’s issue is packed with news and information. I am always happy to receive emails and phone calls from readers and if you have anything to share with others please feel free to get in touch. I hope you all enjoy reading this issue and thank you to all advertisers, contributors and readers for supporting Island Magazines. I look forward to catching up with you next month. Best wishes and stay safe.

The September issue marks Island Magazines 10th Anniversary and never in my wildest dreams did I think back in 2010 that it would grow from just the one area to seven, covering pretty much the whole of the Island. The very first area was East Cowes & Whippingham and this was because at the time it was my hometown and had a real community feel. It was so well received amongst residents that I launched the Cowes, Gurnard & Northwood area in November 2011. 2012 was a very busy year and this was the year Island Magazines really stood out and a further three areas were added, Sandown & Shanklin launched in February, Ryde & Wootton in July and finally in October 2012 Freshwater, Totland and Yarmouth. These five areas kept me very busy for the next couple of years and then I started to receive requests from Newport residents asking if I was going to be producing a magazine for their area? How could I refuse... and Newport & Carisbrooke was launched in April 2014. Fast forward 4 years until September 2018 and the Bembridge & St Helens area was launched. There is real community spirit in these two villages and as this is what the magazine is all about it, it was only natural that this area would become the seventh area to be added to the family. I am lucky that I can say I love my job; I love what the magazine has become and how it has taken shape. When I sit down and think about the people involved each month it’s quite astonishing... Firstly, you have myself, all the wonderful advertisers, news contributors which are made up of Councillors and Parish/Town Councils, some of them I have been working with since the start, then the team of printers who print and pack it every month and then all the wonderful distributors who kindly allow me to fly in and out of their premises every month (now wearing a mask) and deliver a pile to them which they kindly display ready for the thousands of readers who come and pick up a copy to take home and read. Without them all playing their part there really wouldn’t be a local community magazine and we all work together like well-oiled cogs.

I hope everyone is looking forward to the next 10 years of Island Magazines, as I know I am!

Follow the Sun During lockdown many of us took to our gardens and enjoyed the pleasure of growing a variety of plants, veg and fruit. One plant that was really popular with both adults and children was the humble sunflower. You don’t have to go far to see one of these cheery plants peering over the hedge or fence.

These wonderful flowers can reach heights of up to 12ft with heads bigger than your hands, unless of course you are growing the dwarf variety which has a height of about 2ft. Sunflowers are known for being “happy” flowers, making them the perfect gift to bring joy to someone’s (or your) day. Young sunflowers track the sun, also referred to as heliotropism. A young sunflower’s face follows the sun from sunrise (east) to sunset (west) every day and repeats the cycle until maturity. As sunflowers reach maturity, it behaves differently. The overall growth of the plant slows down gradually, the circadian rhythm (their internal biological clock) ensures that the plant reacts more strongly to sunlight early in the morning than the afternoon or evening. A mature sunflower does not move with the sun throughout the day; rather, it just faces east. I feel that during lockdown the island experienced a ‘sunflower boom’… we have another few months to wait to see if a ‘baby boom’ also occurred!!!!! 5
News Report from Cllr Paul Fuller - 45 Oxford Street, Northwood, PO31 8PT. Telephone: 01983 289595 - Email: paulfulleriw@gmail. St Mary’s junction - In recent weeks there have been regular delays occuring at this junction. This follows work commencing on the more difficult aspects of the scheme. I anticipate delays will become commonplace between now and December. Please visit: http://islandroads. com/newport-st-marys-strategic-junctionimprovements/ for updates.
proposal to reconfigure traffic flows to allow a new cycle route into Cowes.
In response, as well as calls to Island Roads, I’ve asked for incidents of antisocial driving to be monitored.
Place Road new Pedestrian Refuge Following perseverance a new refuge emerged in Place Road to make it safe for pedestrians crossing the road to The Range and Aldi. It was a long time coming, but thank you for your patience!
Supporting local businesses: Use them or lose them? - A large number of local businesses continue to be impacted by the downturn in custom. This is particularly relevant to pubs, café’s and small shops- all which desperately seek our support. If you can shop local, please shop local as our community needs all the support we as residents can give! This is not only important for shops themselves, but to those who depend upon jobs and the local interaction that help make our local community thrive. In the meantime, I’m speaking to the IW Council about doing all they can to ensure our towns flourish. Active Travel funding to improve access for Cyclists - IW Councillors were contacted concerning ‘Active Travel’ funding from the Government. This follows Covid-19 issues raised to improve pedestrian and particularly cycling access. In light of this, we were advised of a 6
Following feedback from councillors, I’ve suggested for more to be done to reroute cycles from the pedestrianised town, whilst increasing public access to the shoreside. This is also being looked into.
Gurnard Green Toilets - Toilets at Gurnard Green recently refurbished by Gurnard Parish Council reopened in July. Although I received a complaint concerning the 20p cost, this charge is necessary to help maintain the toilets and is a small contribution from beach/green users rather than just Gurnard precept payers. During the transferral of toilets by the IW Council, residents suggested they would prefer to pay a charge than lose toilets all together. Subsequently where toilets have been replaced, there is likely to be a charge. This has happened in Shanklin and will also apply to the new for toilets planned in Newport. Since the toilets reopened following snagging, the large majority of residents have welcomed the new facilities. My grateful thanks to Gurnard Parish Council for their commitment on this. continued over the page
News report from Cllr Paul Fuller continued Anti-Social Behaviour - I continue to receive feedback concerning noise nuisance and anti-social behaviour following gatherings on Gurnard Beach. From June’s police report all four reported crimes related to incidents in Gurnard occurred in relation to or during the aftermath of beach gatherings. This followed my request for the police to increase their presence. Although four reported crimes are not a lot, it does demonstrate a need! Please report all incidents to: https:// www.hampshire.police.uk/ro/report/ocr/ af/how-to-report-a-crime/ or by email to: west.wight.police@ hampshire.pnn.police.uk Coronavirus Update - As things start to revert to normal, myself and Cllr Peacey Wilcox are working with Community Action and the IW Council. I am working on a local plan to set out locally who does what, and where volunteers can plug any gaps should a second wave emerge. In the meantime updates can be found at: https://www.gov. uk/coronavirus Trees, Hedges and Bushes - Bird nesting season ended in August. This will allow roadside, footway and public rights of way hedges to have more of a significant trim. Please let me know of sites where access is impaired. Over the summer, I supported residents with neighbours overgrown bushes, hedges and trees. To note: • There is no general requirement that all hedges should be kept below a certain height.
•
There is no limit to the height of a hedge or a tree in a garden. • There is no law prohibiting the planting of leylandii trees. • There is no such thing as an automatic ‘right to light’ or a view. Environmental Health were notified concerning safety after the build-up of timber off Place Road. Subsequently after my calls, the Fire Brigade was called out following an impromptu bonfire. A further application has been received to construct an additional two dwellings at The Dottens. Concerns were raised regarding taxi operators not using face coverings. This was reported to Licensing Officers, who advised that although drivers can refuse to accept customers not prepared to wear masks, there is no legal requirement on drivers to shield or do the same. Island Roads are intending to name the new development in Egypt Hill, Monterey Close. Alongside our MP and some IW Councillors, I am supporting the WAVE Trust in supporting those with ‘Adverse Childhood Experiences’. Please visit https://www.wavetrust. org/7030 for details.

Putting the Needs of Children First Jigsaw Family Support is a community based; small charitable organisation on the Island. They are a child focused organisation but work with all family members and extended family to provide a safe, stable and happy living environment during and following the separation and divorce of parents and other life changing issues. Their services include supervised and supported contacts as well as handovers, DNA testing, mediation, family counselling, workshops and parent/child support groups. Their team is made up of committed professionals with years of experience and cover a wide range of services. They are recognised by the courts, social services and all national agencies and have enhanced NACCC accreditation and can provide a safe, caring, and relaxed environment where non-resident parents can spend time with their children on a regular basis. Many parents who use the services of Jigsaw Family Support have lost the ability to communicate with their partner and have trouble agreeing on what’s best for their children. The range of issues they can help with include relationship breakdown, child protection concerns, mental and physical health problems, drug and alcohol misuse, housing issues, debt, poverty, court issues (now legal aid has stopped), contact issues and domestic violence. There is a small fee applied when using their services but Jigsaw Family Support understand that families on low income and those experiencing financial difficulties during this unusual time may find this an added stress and are therefore willing to accept donations. They understand the number one priority is the children and providing a safe community haven with professional help “An excellent team to guide the family offering an through the difficult invaluable service” times is their main aim. What’s happening in our area by ‘Local and Vocal’ Lora Peacey-Wilcox TRAVEL CHAOS: I was alerted at 9.30am on the 3rd August of travel gridlock. I emailed the Leader of Council and to be fair he backed me up and with pressure on Island roads, work was completed 2 days quicker, and cleared ready for teatime traffic. We are still facing long delays getting out of Cowes to Newport, not helped by floaty not working!! p.s I did predict travel chaos….as did many of you. I am sorry for all those that missed funerals, appointments, catch ups, and business that were affected. (all because someone did not THINK that there was only one way in and out of Cowes at the time….) FLOATING BRIDGE: I am speechless, exhausted. The IWC are in a legal dispute; fingers crossed for a positive outcome and a new bridge, (smaller) that works…!! BINS: I’ve asked before but PLEASE take your bins in at the earliest point. If you know a neighbour who struggles, offer to take theirs off the pavements and roads. I have received complaints from mums having to push babies into traffic, and many partially sighted people struggling to walk on pavements obstructed. HEDGES: So many of you have done well in cutting back your hedges. The need for visibility for safety of road users and pedestrians alike is much needed. Brambles have taken hold, so please go and take a look and cut them back, particularly bad for partially sighted and babies in prams.
COVID: I do hope you are all staying safe; but managing to have a ’new’ normal life. We MUST support local and high street shops. Who would have thought we would ever be in this situation eh? ROTARY: New members welcome. We meet virtually at the moment, but still able to help the community in a number of ways. Call John on 297472 for details. FURLOUGHED: As the scheme comes to an end, and seasonal work has ceased. SO MANY people will be affected. PLEASE start thinking ahead as money is going to be harder to come by. Think about every penny you spend… COWES WEEK 2021: How can it be improved? What would you like to see more of ? What areas do you enjoy most? PLEASE let me know as we are planning ahead for a super season! SPEEDING: I receive complaints regularly about speeding traffic. We are in need of SPEED WATCH VOLUNTEERS to help us define if it is speeding on the roads, or perceived speeding!! Contact me if you can spend a couple of hours every couple of weeks or so! SCAMS: These people have no conscience. If you receive an email or call from HMRC, TV licensing or Council Tax, IGNORE. Delete. If anything looks too good, it most certainly is! Be Aware.
NOISY GATE SHEPHERDS WHARF: I was alerted to the issue and had immediate response back when I raised with Harbour Master. They tried a temporary measure which has not worked sufficiently; so hoping LOVE LANE: Amey have not been able to to come up with a long-term solution, so collect rubbish from areas due to cars being please be patient. 10

What’s happening in our area by ‘Local and Vocal’ Lora Peacey-Wilcox parked on yellow hatch area. This causes so much angst. PLEASE park with consideration! CYCLING IN HIGH STREET: Always means my email will be busy!! However, not that it is a straightforward job, if at all possible, but what would you think to a designated cycle lane, away from pedestrians? The police simply do not have the resources to spend hours; and to be honest, the cyclists by and large IGNORE. (I’ve witnessed it myself!). THE LINK KIOSK: Welcome to a new business at the floating bridge. DELICIOUS cakes and rolls. Please support this business. I am sure they can take orders if you work and live in the area. MOORGREEN RD: I have asked IWC to assist with overhanging and overgrown trees in the area. It has been an issue for a while now; hoping to get resolved.

120 years of Isle of Wight retailing comes to an end Beardsalls has been a household name on the Isle of Wight since 1901. Their first retail shop started on Shanklin Esplanade by John Beardsall. This family business has waxed and waned over the years, through 2 World Wars, storms, floods and numerous recessions. The retailer has always developed it’s offering to match the times, but now alas, with the advent of internet shopping and the near total collapse of high street business due to the Covid pandemic the time has come to shut its retail doors for ever. Four generations of the Beardsalls family have been custodians of the business. John’s son Bernard inherited the Esplanade shop upon his death and soon expanded into another unit in Regent Street, Shanklin, quickly becoming the Island’s very first ‘lending Library’. Bernard’s premature death meant that his widow and youngest son, Michael took over the reins and were soon joined by Mike’s wife Iris and his elder brother Peter. The shop expanded taking on new premises in Ventnor and developing the range of goods to include books, greeting cards and photocopy services. In 1999 Michael’s son Toby joined the team and further expanded into Ryde, Sandown and Newport. Toby Beardsall says “We have been on an exciting journey with Beardsalls. Some of our long standing loyal customers who dealt with my parents in the 60’s and 70’s have supported us through good times and bad, but now we must move on and develop a new business for the modern age” Beardsalls move into printing has enabled them to build on the heritage of the Beardsalls brand, maintaining the core belief of great customer service. Its Print Studio in Orchard Street, Newport opened in 2018 and will remain open and continue to develop services as Beardsalls has always done in the past. Printing is done on site and ranges from wrapping and signwriting vans to printing the magazine that you are reading now. Beardsalls retail may be gone, but the name should not be forgotten. 14
