elcome to the September issue of Island Magazines and as you know I always like to give a little mention about the weather...
In this last month alone, we have had a heat wave that at times was unbearable and we’ve also had monsoon season with serious flooding across the Island. To say it’s been unpredictable is an understatement. Let’s see what September brings us! It seems that almost everyday somebody is being scammed and we have teamed up with IWASP (Isle of Wight Against Scams Partnership) to bring you the latest scams that are doing the ‘rounds’. There are some unscrupulous criminals trying every possible way to get people to part with their money. On page 14 you can find some of the latest scams reported to Trading Standards. In this issue you will find the regular news reports for your area and our ‘Dates for your Diary’ section on page 8 will keep you informed of local and community events happening across the Island. If you have an event coming up, please feel free to send us the details via any of the means below. We have some great advertisers and as always please support them as it’s been a rough 18 months for many local businesses. I hope you have a great September and I look forward to catching up with you again next month

Tractors…. For the past couple of years, the front cover of the September issue has been reserved for anything tractor themed! Two reasons for this… since a very young age I have always had a love of tractors and secondly when you live on an island, during harvesting season, you are never far from a tractor, ploughed field, farmland or dare I mention it stuck behind one in traffic. I have recently moved from my central rural location at Arreton and must admit I miss seeing the tractors, trailers and all manner of agricultural machinery passing my window. Thankfully, I have been able to satisfy my fix of tractors by tuning into the much talked after TV show, Clarkson’s Farm. When this was first brought to my attention I ummed and ahhed about watching it as I was no Jeremy Clarkson fan… However, I can be the first to admit I was wrong, and this is probably the best show I have seen in a long, long time. I take my hat off to farmers across the nation as I have learnt so much about farming, more than I could ever have imagined, much of this is thanks to Clarkson’s side kick, experienced young farmer Kaleb Cooper who also brought the show to life. I won’t ruin it by telling you anything more. It is available to watch on Amazon Prime Video and I rate it ‘ten thumbs up’.

News Report from Cllr Paul Fuller - for Cowes West & Gurnard Tel: 01983 289595/07935 090835 - Email: paulfulleriw@gmail.com Dog Exclusion Order: Gurnard Beach Please note that dogs are restricted from using the beach between the slipway at Shore Road and the Water Fountain to the east of the pumping station. This follows confusion from dog owners following last year’s consultation on Public Spaces Protection Orders. The map can be found here: www.iow.gov. uk/azservices/documents/2053-Gurnardv1.pdf with further details at: www.iow. gov.uk/azservices/documents/1390Dogs-on-beaches-guide-WEB-VERSIONFORMAT-6may15.pdf Electricity Outages: Gurnard - With fluctuating energy supplies in Worsley Road and Glen Place, I’ve been liaising with SSE. Although there were improvements once a generator was used, following power cuts I again chased SSE. Please let me know if issues continue Bathing Water - Throughout the Island following last month’s flooding concerns continue to resonate regarding bathing water and by the fact that following storm the Government issues regular statements following flooding that pollution risk warnings have regularly been reported both at Cowes and at Gurnard. For details visit: environment.data.gov.uk/bwq/profiles In response a meeting has been arranged to discuss concerns with Southern Water. Island Planning Strategy: Have your say! Until 1st October, the Isle of Wight Council are consulting on the Island Planning Strategy, which is defined as the Planning Bible for the Island for the following 15 years. 12
Following feedback there are now targets for biodiversity gains from development, green spaces, support for dark skies, the Island’s biosphere status and ensuring land is allocated for employment. Housing numbers have reduced from 1045 to 486 dwellings per annum, less ambiguity regarding settlement boundaries and a desire to prioritise affordable homes to local people. Within the Strategy there are proposals that residents will welcome, whilst there are some- particularly the land allocations- that require further work and local engagement with residents and stakeholders. The purpose of the engagement is to listen, give meaningful feedback and to incorporate this into the next phase of the process. For further information please visit: www.iow. gov.uk/planthewight Town and Parish Councils - At Full Council changes in accordance with priorities from the Alliance Administration were made to the Council’s constitution resurrected voting rights to the IWALC (Isle of Wight Association of Local Council’s) member on the Corporate Scrutiny Committee. In addition, an IWALC member will join the IW Council’s Planning Committee as a non-voting member. Hedgerows and Weeds - The bird nesting season ended on the 31st July. Following calls made please bear with Island Roads and Rights of Way as they contend with trimming mammoth overgrown hedgerows over the coming months… In addition, I
News report from Cllr Paul Fuller continued am receiving calls concerning weed growth. This follows concerns over the use of Glysolphate on highways and cutbacks made in last years’ budget. As an alternative, crews are removing weeds by hand. Planning Applications - As yet no decision notice has been served on a replacement dwelling in Solent View Road. In respect to this, I am advised that discussions remain ongoing between the applicant and the Planners. Elsewhere a further application has been made to develop 7 dwellings on land to the north of Gurnard Farm in Lower Church Road (Ref: 21/01442/OUT). A letter drop took place to nearby residents and an extraordinary meeting of Gurnard Parish Council was called last month. SIFCA Meeting - I attended two meetings of the Southern Inshore Fisheries Conservation Authority (SIFCAA). Issues discussed include the damage caused by Cruise Liners and Tankers to the seabed when anchoring. In addition, DEFRA are due to consult on highly protected marine sites this Autumn, whilst concern was expressed concerning the recent increase of ‘fly shooting’ from large European boats this spring/ summer. Within SIFCA after my first meeting, I was appointed to their Executive Committee who meets in Poole.

You will be given a FREE discreet bag with what you need no questions asked. Track and Tracing Test Kits - Although Freedom Day has been and gone, a number of agencies insist that residents are regularly tested. Please note Test kits for Track and Tracing are free and widely available from pharmacies. Traffic Orders - Thank you to everyone who gave feedback to recent Traffic Regulation Orders. These are being processed by traffic officers and will take at least until September to implement and where necessary amend. During the summer both Gurnard Primary School and I received complaints concerning anti-social parking on the Baring Road cycle lane. Proposals to impose double yellow lines on the southern section of Princes Esplanade will be re-advertised following our new Council’s abandonment of plans to impose parking meters on the seafront. They claimed the resident owed £180 but they didn’t have any insurance and info@dazzleexternalcleaning.com had recently changed their television. The caller then insisted that they needed to pay and they couldn’t pay in instalments, they went as far as to demand they use a credit card, go overdrawn or borrow money from a friend. Luckily the resident reported this to a trusted contact who confirmed that this was definitely a SCAM. • We have received reports of callers ringing residents to say that they want to check their meters, implying they are from SSE. On checking the number online there are large numbers of complaints about it. If in doubt check with SSE to confirm if the call is genuine • Action Fraud has received over 700 reports from members of the public about fake emails purporting to be from the NHS. The emails claim to be able to provide people with a “digital passport” that “proves you have been vaccinated against COVID-19”. These emails are fake, and the links within them lead to genuinelooking websites that steal your personal and financial information. Remember, the vaccine is free of charge. At no point will you be asked to pay. • Emails have been received purporting to be from the HMRC stating ‘ if you do not reply to this email with the details required, you will not be eligible for any refunds from HMRC’ – this is a SCAM and legitimate organisations will never contact you in this way.
You can check if a phone number is a scam – put the number that called you into google and select the website who-called.co.uk this will tell you if the number is definitely or likely to be a scam and quite often others who have received it will comment on their experience. 14
