too can come and see the goats with the kids.

We have a special front cover this month and the star of it is Rookley and his mum Toggie. This little dancing, prancing kid is part of the 50 strong herd of Isle of Wight Dairy Goats, who reside at and belong to The Green Barn. The herd isn’t complete yet as at the time of writing this there are still a couple of mums waiting to deliver. They are the only commercial dairy goat farm on the Island and these little beauties are responsible for producing the freshest and tastiest goats cheese, milk and fudge on the Island. The Green Barn Isle of Wight Dairy Goats is open to the public and you

The day we went to visit we were lucky enough to have cuddles with some newborns and they are just the cutest. Obviously Rookley wanted to show us how entertaining he could be and was doing some leaps, jumps and generally playing around in his paddock much to amusement of us all. You can easily while away an hour or more just watching these fascinating animals. Whilst visiting the goats you can also visit their onsite farm shop for some wonderful hand crafted gifts as well as the delectable delights of fudge, cheese and milk. They are situated on the Main Road, Bouldnor, PO41 0XN and are open every day.

Town Mayor Report for East Cowes From Margaret Webster (Tel No: 01983 299082 and leave a message for the Mayor) We now move into the spring period and recently we have had a few sunny days, let us hope that it remains this way and we can all enjoy the sunshine.

It was resolved that subject to robust fiscal regulations and safeguards are in place, a contribution of £1500 is agreed in principle.

The time moves very quickly in the role of the Town Council, this month has been no exception as we move forward with more responsibilities.

It was also reported that leaflets detailing a collection calendar regarding the new changes to the Waste Collection will be delivered shortly to all households detailing new arrangements.

At the February meeting of the Town Council, an update on the Town Councils takeover of the Osborne Road Toilets. The clerk reported that the IWC had suggested a’ tenancy of will’ should be applied to enable the toilets to remain open for use from April 1st 2016, whilst the details of a contract transferring the freehold of the toilets is drafted. After a freedom of information request of the IOW council from the Town Council to have a copy of incomes of the Floating Bridge, a response detailing income only has been received. It was agreed that a further request should be made requesting the expenditure of the same period be made. Both sets of figures will enable the Town Council to assess the situation. An update of a recent meeting of ‘Destination Cowes’ meeting was provided to the Council members with a request for a financial contribution for £1500. This was discussed amongst the Councillors, the Clerk advised that in accordance with financial regulations and audit, this council could not make any contribution until a full constitution and all appropriate financial safeguards were adopted by the group and agreed by the Town Council. 8

Each household should receive these by end of March/beginning of April. It was comforting to be informed that in fact the IWC will be undertaking the repairs to the damaged Library roof. It was reported that PCSO Steve Hull is hoping to hold a Skate Park Fun Day on Saturday 23rd July but this will be confirmed at a later date. DATES TO REMEMBER. SATURDAY 2nd APRIL 10am-12pm, Spring Charity Table Top, sponsored by ECTC, please contact me for further information SUNDAY 17th April 2016 midday-2pm, Beach Clean, meet on the Esplanade INFORMATION. Please Note: - East Cowes Town Council Meetings now start at 6.30p.m on the 3rd Thursday of each month. Next Town Council Meeting will be on Thursday 21st April 2016 @ 6.30p.m.

Spring is definitely on the way and by the time this is in print, there should be an abundance of spring flowers, lambs skipping happily in the fields, birds in the trees and signs that summer is on its way. The downside to all of this is that crème eggs will be once more disappearing from the shelves, but that’s a small price to pay to be able to leave the house without wearing enough clothes that rival the rails of Valu-4-U in case of a shower, snow, sleet or sunny skies!

St George’s Day, which thankfully falls on a Saturday this year (23rd April) and we’re hoping that you and your family will come into the town join in on the fun and games. Like the pancake races in February, we are hoping that it will be a fun family event (and importantly, it will be free!). I still don’t really understand what happened – but the upshot of it is that we are hoping to give it a bit of a facelift and have it back online very soon. Our huge thanks to Stephen for helping us.

The rivalry between West and East Cowes has been ongoing for centuries (having grandparents who lived ‘on the West side’ but worked ‘on the East side’ – and a brother who still does) I suspect that the argument Once again, I would like to thank our about which side is best will continue for members for their continued support. The Importance of Colour as We Grow Older With older age comes a greater likelihood of eyesight conditions, as well as being on medication, having a form of dementia, and perhaps all of these things combined. What the eye sees, the brain must interpret, and this can vary given different circumstances, type and progression of dementia, and abilities. Understanding that an older person with or without dementia will probably perceive their surroundings differently, is a good starting point for the design of living environments. Good design can help enormously in making it easier to interpret and navigate a building in safety, and the use of colour and contrast can be used in different ways to assist in this.

Contrast is the key to vision.

Blue – restful and has a calming effect, a popular choice for sitting areas and bedrooms

High contrast - When we want to draw attention to something important, greater contrast helps to highlight it. For example, a coloured and contrasting toilet seat helps with positioning; stairs can be made safer with a contrasting strip along the front edge; grab rails can be located; the outlines of furniture can be seen more clearly

Green – the most restful colour, also a popular choice for sitting areas and bedrooms, plus waiting rooms and clinical areas to help reduce stress Red – increases brain wave activity, can stimulate the appetite and produce adrenalin. It is frequently specified in dining areas but dementia patients can have problems seeing the red end of the colour spectrum Orange – this warm colour has a similar effect to red

If there is no contrast, objects cannot easily be seen and differentiated. Contrast is vital in being able to comprehend the environment and understand the features and elements that we need to use in our ordinary daily lives. As we age we lose the ability to differentiate colours clearly, our perception of depth diminishes, there is a loss of visual acuity, we have less spatial awareness and our sensitivity to contrast lowers. Without good contrasts, the world becomes more hazy, we struggle more and more to make sense of it and we function in life with less confidence.

Low contrast - The opposite effect can be achieved by lowering the contrast. e.g. a white door on a white wall. This is also a useful way of making floorings safer, by keeping to a single colour over different floor finishes, or making changes in the floor colour gradually rather than suddenly. It is the sudden contrast which can make the floor levels look uneven, like a step, and this can cause hesitation and unsteadiness which can lead to falls.

Violet – this combination of colours from opposite ends of the light spectrum does not appear to have a consistent effect on mood A large or busy pattern can confuse the eye, and again cause hesitation if it looks like an obstacle or a hole. Shiny finishes can look Yellow – a stimulating colour, ideal for activity areas, can make small rooms appear unsafe, so a matte flooring is preferable and people can walk more safely. larger. 18
