Dear Readers Welcome to the April issue and I can’t quite believe where this last month has gone! Signs of Spring are popping up everywhere, with bursts of colour from daffodils, crocuses and spring flowers on hedges and banks all around the Island. The Island is coming alive again and many tourist attractions will be opening their doors as the Easter seasons begins. There are a variety of events happening across the Island during April, and you will find details of these on pages 18 and 19. As the weather is getting warmer and whilst many people are taking this opportunity to sit and relax in the sun please can I urge you to read the article on page 21 to ensure you stay in the best of health. I hope you enjoy this months issue which is packed with news and information and I look forward to catching up with you next month and I hope you all have a Happy Easter.

East Cowes Business Association I have been writing articles for this magazine for a year now, and the deadline still catches me out (despite the helpful reminders from Debbie the week before). East Cowes Business Association is keen to be involved in all aspects of the community; of course we’re primarily here for business users, but as each of our businesses relies on the support of our community, the two are inextricably linked, which is why we consider that hosting events such as the Pancake Races, St George’s Day and litter picks – none of which are strictly business related activities – are appropriate and in turn help to grow a thriving and buoyant community, something that we will all benefit from. Annual General Meeting We held our AGM at the start of March at the delicious Taste of India (special thanks to Swapna and her team for providing wonderful food and wine). Thanks also to all of our members who came along. It really was good to see so many of you. The AGM highlighted that committee meetings are never high on people’s ‘things to do’ list, and speaking as a self-employed dad of three, my evenings are generally spent catching up with my kids homework, reading, cooking dinner, bath time and scratching my head, wondering where on earth the day has gone! I have yet to meet anyone that says they wished they went to more meetings in the evening. But, we desperately need the input and ideas of our members to move the ECBA forward and to best represent your business needs. With this in mind we are making some changes to the way we hold our 4
monthly committee meetings. They will remain once a month, but no longer be formal committee meetings; they’ll be open to any member of ECBA to share ideas, opinions or ask us what we’re doing about a certain topic, as often or as little as you like. There are so many interested people who have great ideas, but cannot commit to regularly attending meetings, so we are hoping that this will lead to a more inclusive and informal association. In addition to this, we would like our meetings to be more social events and if possible, to be hosted at different member premises, giving members the opportunity to show-off their product and to shout about what they offer. Previous meetings have taken place in Waitrose, on board a ferry, Flix’s Hairdressers, Seabreeze, Taste of India, the library and others, so if you can host a meeting, do let us know. St George’s Day – a celebration of all things English Following last year’s celebration of St George’s Day, we thought that we would do it again, but make it better! We are giving all members the opportunity to have a space or table in Kings Square for free to promote their business in return for running an activity. We would love the square to be packed with lots of activities, so please get in touch now to book your space – this is a great opportunity to speak to Mum or Dad whilst the kids are occupied, hand out flyers or business cards. Please contact us as soon as possible to arrange what space and requirements you need.
East Cowes Business Association For the members of the public, you and your family can expect lots of fun including a fancy dress competition as well as swing boats, face painting, ‘splat the rat’, Morris dancers and lots of other traditional activities, with all activities planned so far being free of charge. The event will start mid-morning and run until approximately 3pm on Saturday 22nd April (a day early, we know). As we’re sponsoring the whole event again, all of the activities arranged by us will be free of charge, enabling you to bring the kids and not worry about the cost to your pocket. Most of the events are simply turn up and take part, but please look out for posters over the coming few weeks for timings of the competition activities. We were hoping to have a timetable ready, but there is so much to cram in, we’re struggling! Please look out for timetables in shop windows. Other news East Cowes has an enormous range of skilled, knowledgeable and qualified people, I cannot stress enough how important it is to use local tradespeople and services, the chances are that because they won’t need to make journey of half an hour each way to their customer (you!) their quote will be cheaper for you too. By spending money in your town, you are helping your town to flourish. Once again, I would like to thank our members for their continued support. We are actively trying to promote East Cowes as well as individual businesses and do this via this magazine, and our website will shortly be relaunched (www.ecba.biz) as well as
Twitter (@EastCowesBiz) Facebook and a monthly e-newsletter. If your business is currently a member, or if you would like to join, you can use any of these methods to promote your business for free. Please get in touch. Can I please remind businesses that membership is now due. It is £25 for the year and is open to every business with a postcode of PO32 (either an office or a premises address). SPRING FORWARD WITH YOGA by Judith Didham
in East Cowes, Gurnard & Cowes
Spring is just about with us now! The signs are all around us. Change is definitely on its way! As in nature, this is often the time of year when we instigate new changes in our lives. For some of us, the New Year’s resolutions we made are now dim and distant memories! I don’t make them myself; the timing always seems wrong – however, Spring seems to be a perfect time to embrace new changes and remind ourselves of how important it is to look after ourselves and Yoga is a wonderful way to do that.

A Feathered Friend The last few issues we have had the pleasure of sharing pictures on the front cover from some local talented amateur photographers and this months issue is no exception. The fabulous front cover picture was taken at Alverstone Mead Nature Reserve by Viki Taylor who has been very lucky to get regular close up photos of these feathered friends as well as the red squirrels who are also frequent visitors. Viki is Island born but lived away for a while, returning in 2011. As well as having a love for fur and feather Viki has a passion for landscapes, seascapes and event photography such as Round the Island Race, Cowes Week and air displays, particularly if the Red arrows are involved. Viki’s husband rides trial bikes and she has become the unofficial Isle of Wight Motorcycle Club photographer, spending weekends (sometimes in the mud) capturing the riders as they manoeuvre through the courses.

VOTE Jane Rann for Town Councillor on Thursday 4th May
I have lived on the Island all of my life and married an East Coweser 45 years ago. My husband and I have two children educated here in East Cowes. My husband has run the family business in Whippingham. Since retiring from the NHS I have taken voluntary roles within the community at the Children’s Centre, East Cowes (Stay and Play); Parkside Pavilion helping with the Cafe; RNLI Shop. During the last eight years I have worked as one of the four Osborne Ward Town Councillors. I was Mayor of East Cowes 2012 / 2013.
THE PEOPLE OF EAST COWES MAKE US WHO WE ARE It matters to me that we have a beautiful, safe environment, well educated children, parks and areas for families and friends to meet, socialise and play. Youth Services, Groups for the older person to attend and the not so agile. Sports facilities, cycling tracks and a CAR PARK. A variety of shops, cafes, regular bus services and a floating bridge between the two towns that isn’t too costly. I want to see East Cowes thrive and prosper in the right way. By voting for Jane Rann, as a non-political Town Councillor - I shall continue working hard for our full regeneration potential, whilst ensuring that we do not lose all that our community treasures the most, in making us, such a remarkable town.
I want what our community wants NOT what outsiders seem to think we need. Promoted by: Jane Rann, 14 Cambridge Road, East Cowes, Isle of Wight, PO32 6AH

Love - East Cowes
Vote Karl Love on the 4th May 2017
Standing for East Cowes North Ward and Isle of Wight Council to represent the people of East Cowes.
There is a lot to do and say about our Islands way of life and I hope you will consider allowing me to serve you for a full term in office. It’s definitely going to be an interesting 4 years, in every aspect as the county council seeks to balance the books and our town fights for its rightful recognition and regeneration. Change only happens when ordinary people get involved, get engaged, and come together to demand it (Barak Obama).
I entered office in October 2016 after the seat became vacant and although its only been a short time I believe that I have made an impact for our town and would like to continue doing so. I’ve contributed to our towns media profile and engaged with issues, concerns and attitudes which are important to local people. Through taking assertive actions I persuaded the IOW council to have the trees cut back from the over hanging esplanade. It might seem a small win but I did this in less than 4 months. A lot needs doing along the esplanade to clear the landslip. The landslip cannot be moved without first pilling the land behind. It’s sometimes the small things that can make all the difference and I will try hard to change these things. Financial Investors are flocking to our town as they recognise our potential. However, we need to take care to ensure the ‘BIG East Cowes Land Grab’ results in truly meaningful development and is not simply about maximizing profits. All will claim to be enhancing our town and island and some will. My job is to test and challenge that resolve to try to ensure the best outcomes for our towns people.

Bob Packham
Liberal Democrat Candidate
For East Cowes
IT`S TIME FOR A CHANGE
My name is Robert Packham and I have lived at Osborne Heights East Cowes for the last 6 years. I am married with 2 grown up sons and stood as a council candidate for East Cowes in the County and Town council elections in 2013. I worked at Chatham Dockyard for 10 years then 30 years for the British Railways and now retired.. I was an Ashford Borough Councillor for 8 years up to 2011 and served on the Planning Committee, O&S Committee, Deputy Group Leader and Vice-Chair for Standards for Ashford Borough Council. I want to use my expertise to work for people in East Cowes and it needs a person who will stand up for the Town and get things done. East Cowes needs some Regeneration and also needs to be brightened up and cleaned up from dog fouling. East Cowes could do with more shops and have more business and leisure facilities. Old buildings like Frank James Hospital which has been boarded up for years , old doctors surgery and toilets at the Esplanade need to be brought back into use. The smelly rotten seaweed on the beach needs to be removed. Once removed the seaweed could be turned into liquid seaweed for peoples gardens as seen in garden programmes on the television.

MARGARET WEBSTER Your local Town Councillor A STRONG & EFFECTIVE VOICE FOR EAST COWES. Over the last four years as part of the Town Council team, I have supported many projects for the Town. Sadly there is still a much to be done! a lesson soon learnt when you become a Town councillor is that you can’t always progress matters as you would wish. There is still a number of projects needing completion, I ask you, the residents of East Cowes North Ward, to give me the opportunity to do this by voting for me at the elections on May 4th 2017. I wish to see the Red Funnel regeneration scheme be finalised for the benefit of the Town and its residents, Norris Castle, redevelopment, dealt with for the benefit of the Town. East Cowes Seafront needs upgrading for the benefit and enjoyment of all ages, this regeneration needs completing to the benefit of future generations. East Cowes is a Town to be proud of, and we need to get this message out to everyone, we don’t need just houses built for the sake of building somewhere, we have our share of houses! - NOW we need the infrastructure to go with it. We need to keep our industry for our town to survive. We desperately need a Car Park, long and short term parking is needed, this is a project well overdue, I strongly support and wish to see happen in the next four years. This should happen and can happen with the right support. Trust Me! The great thing is my role here in East Cowes is non –political. East Cowes has a vibrant Community with a good spirit. I am always available to meet residents to help solve any problems as I have in the last two years as Mayor of the Town. I will to speak at Planning Meetings in County Hall giving the local view on applications. I have spoken recently re The Red Funnel Application. I feel passionate about East Cowes and will always speak up for the residents and their wishes. I continue to work with and support Queensgate Foundation primary School (as a Governor), supporter of the Amy White Theatre Group (as Secretary) as well my role in East Cowes Town Council. New blood is needed on any team but it is important to have experience and knowledge as well so that the Town Council continues to function. For that reason I ask that you give me the opportunity to represent you for this term SO please:-

Fake it - don’t bake it! Cancer... it’s a devastating disease and can attack anyone and skin cancer alone comes in many forms and some people don’t realise that Melanoma is the most aggressive and deadliest. You see a mole that may have changed colour or size, and you get it checked out and they remove it, and if you are very lucky this might be the end of your cancer story but for many this is just the beginning. Local business owner, partner, mum, daughter and friend, Debbie Keynes first noticed a lump on her head and her nurse’s intuition kicked in and she sought medical help and was told that she must do an agonising 4 week wait to see if any changes occurred. Nothing good came from waiting and after lots of tests, biopsies and anxious waiting Debbie was diagnosed with Melanoma. She has now undergone surgery to remove the cancer along with 37 lymph nodes, Debbie’s head and neck resembles a patchwork quilt boasting a total of 56 stitches. She is a constant visitor to the hospital, racking up well over 20 appointments. Her long brunette hair hides the bald patch that will always be a constant reminder of what she has fought and what she will continue to fight every day of her life. Debbie has recently had another CT scan and the Melanoma has spread and she is now receiving immunotherapy every 3 weeks at Southampton General – so her battle is still very real but she is continuing to fight it...
Debbie knew that pushing her doctor and specialists to ensure she got the diagnosis as fast as she could would greatly increase her chances and she insists that anybody who has a lump, changes in a mole or anything which could be a trigger to seek medical advice immediately and not to ignore it. International Health organisations agree that sun exposure and sun beds are the main causes of skin cancers. The recent increase in the number of people taking last minute cheap holidays abroad may contribute to the rising number of melanoma cases. People who receive the highest exposures to the sun have about 20-35% higher risks of melanoma, but sun burn at any age doubles the risk of malignant melanoma. Help yourself by using lots of sun cream, staying in the shade and wearing a hat. Remember the sun is at its deadliest between 11am and 3pm. Debbie is in a support group and she has watched fellow sufferers lose the battle and some of these people have been in their 20’s and 30’s so its not a mature persons disease – cancer has no age limit. Her business DSK Training is an Island based company which specialises in health and social care training and Debbie has taken on a challenge to educate as many people as possible to bring awareness to this deadly disease and is offering training courses to businesses and groups, especially hairdressers and beauticians who may see the signs before anyone else. The profit from these courses will go directly to Melanoma UK. For more information and contact details go to www.dsktraining.co.uk
I have been proud to represent the ward of Whippingham and Osborne in recent years, and hope that you will support me at the polls on May 4th so I can continue doing a job that I love.
I have managed to solve many concerns from residents and many of you will have come to know me and the passion I have for the area. I have been immersed in the local community. From running the toddler group to campaigning for the loating bridge, Frank James Hospital and to stop the asphalt plant from being built.
I have assisted in gaining the funding to re-open the Parkside Pavilion, bringing the youth service back to East Cowes and providing a space for many other groups to run. I also helped to get the funding for the refurbishment of Whippingham Community hall and fought for the funding for a community bus for Medina Park residents. I have consistently campaigned for the completion of Saunders way, and parking restrictions to improve safety, both of which should be completed very soon. I support the CECAMM college in Whippingham which has received circa £10m funding to give local young people skills and opportunities on the Island. I still have a number of ongoing projects on which I am working, including a memorial for little Keziah and a games area for young people. I have held a number of positions since my election to the Isle of Wight Council, which have given me a breadth of experience. Including Chairman of both the Planning committee and Employment committee, Executive Member for Planning, Regeneration, Housing and homelessness. I am currently the Leader of the Island Independents.
Island Independent Councillors are free from national party control, meaning we are free to represent you irst and foremost. However, being independent from national party politics doesn’t mean being independent from each other. For the last 4 years, as the largest group on the Council, we have set the Council’s policy by means of consensus and have set the Island up to succeed, raising educational standards, softening the impact of Conservative Government austerity and creating opportunities for skills, regeneration and economic growth.
This year I voted against the Conservative imposed 5% Council Tax increase, the increase in loating bridge charges, the reduction in hours at the tip and the cuts to social care funding. I proposed a viable alternative budget with the aim of protecting these services. I am immensely aware of the responsibility that comes with representing Whippingham, Osborne and the Island as a whole and am grateful to you for your support in doing so.
Julia Baker-Smith Whippingham Parish and Isle of Wight Councillor for Whippingham and Osborne . . If you would like to speak to me during the election period please contact me on my personal email address, juliawhippinghamosborne@hotmail.co.uk, call 07960146913, I won’t be using Council equipment for election purposes until May 4th. Promoted by Julia Baker-Smith of 9 Kingslea Park, East Cowes, PO32 6JW.
Fakeaways are the New Takeaways We are all beginning to understand the importance of healthy eating and this doesn’t mean you have to give up your favourite indian takeaway - instead you need a fakeaway... why should you miss out on a little of what you fancy. The advantages are you can make them healthier and they are good for the wallet. This month I have called upon the experts and below you will find a mouthwatering curry recipe from Four Seasons Cookery Academy. Turkey Korma© 2 Turkey Breast Steaks cut into cubes 1 Onion – diced Good Squeeze Garlic Puree/4 cloves fresh Garlic finely chopped 1 large Tablespoons Korma Spice Blend 1 Chicken Stock Cube – preferably low salt - (crumbled) 1 handful dessicated Coconut www.cookeryacademy.co.uk 1 small Tub Half-fat Crème Fraiche 1 Red Apple – cored – cut into wedges and then halved – (peel on) Gently fry the Onions and Garlic in a smidge of Olive Oil until Onions are soft. Add Korma Spice and cook gently for a couple of minutes. *Always cook spices early on in the dish to allow flavours to develop*. Add Turkey and cook until browned (approx 8 minutes). Keep stirring so that it doesn’t stick to the pan If it starts to stick, add a little of the Crème Fraiche to avoid adding more oil. Add the Apples, Stock Cube and Creamed Coconut and cook gently for approximately 5 – 10 minutes until Apples have slightly softened. Remove pan from the heat and stir through the Crème Fraiche. Re-heat gently and serve with Wholegrain Rice. Curries are always thought of as being ‘fattening foods’ and indeed they can be. But by reducing the fat content in this dish by using Olive Oil – Monosaturate - and only a little at that and using Turkey which is one of the healthiest meats available – and less expensive than Chicken. We have used a low fat version of Crème Fraiche to add at the end instead of Cream and we’ve also added Apples and Onions in the recipe as well as part of our FIVE A DAY. Instead of accompanying the Curry with fat laden Naan bread, try brushing a Wholemeal Pitta Bread with a little Garlic Olive Oil and placing in a hot oven for a few minutes.
