Welcome to the April issue of Island Magazines and what a month it has been!! Some of us finally got our wish and the whole Island experienced the joy of snow, but I am pleased it didn’t stick around for long and hopefully now we can await the arrival of Spring and let’s hope we don’t see too many April showers. The Island is slowly coming back to life and seasonal businesses and places of interest are opening their doors to correspondence with this years early Easter. You can read all about this months front cover on page 10 and if you are looking for events happening across the Island then the Dates for your Diary section on pages 16 and 17 will keep you busy. Inside you will find the latest news and information from contributors and adverts from great local businesses who will always appreciate your custom. Please support them and use local where possible. I hope you all have a great month and I look forward to catching up with you again soon.

East Cowes Business Association News by Simon Craddock With April finally here we can hopefully look forward to the spring; this means sunshine, showers, shorts and coats, wellies and wonderful walks, but I will most definitely be keeping the wood for the fire close by for some chilly evenings, ‘just in case’. One of my favourite things about April is that all of a sudden, everything explodes into colour, bursts into leaf and you know that summer is within touching distance. Or perhaps it is just that Easter is round about now and cream eggs are everywhere, either way, it’s a great time. March was a very busy month with many changes happening in and around the town. The redevelopment at Red Funnel has been progressing quickly with demolition at the ferry terminal making a big visual difference, especially from Castle Street. The floating bridge saga continues, and is still undergoing a number of tests. The umbrella tree appears, for the time being at least, to have had a reprieve (as well as celebrity support). Unfortunately, the consultation event for Norris Castle was cancelled due to snow but I understand that this is due to be rescheduled shortly. As this will have major impacts to East Cowes (some positive, some negative) though I’m not involved on any level with this proposal myself, as a town planner I urge you to take some time to make your mind up about how this will shape the future of your town. You may have noticed that Turner Brooks Recruitment, based on York Avenue, has finished in East Cowes. Although sad to see another business leave the town, we are pleased to report that Noel has some exciting business opportunities ahead and would like to wish him the very best for the 6
future and of course to thank him for not only his time on the committee, but also for his passion and enthusiasm (and sponsorship of the pancake races of course). Noel has agreed to remain on the committee for the time being. By the time you read this, ECBA will have held the AGM at The Lunch Box. As much as I would love to write about the scores of new businesses that have joined, sadly I don’t think this would be an accurate prediction (although it is one of the few times that I would like to be proved wrong). The AGM gives us the opportunity to see where we are now, and work out what we want to achieve over the coming year. It is also good to meet up with those members who we rarely see. We are always interested in hearing how we can support our members, and also what stops some businesses from joining. We’re here for everyone, regardless of the scale of business, regardless of the nature or the turnover. Because of the economic climate, we have continued our membership rates at £25 for the year which includes all of the great benefits (including discounts off ferry fares, town planning advice, legal advice and so much more). Last year we trialled a couple of free member only social events (we had a private tour of Osborne House and even went up to the roof, and we visited the Golf Club) both of which were incredibly popular. We hope that something similar will take place later this year. This year, our celebration of St George’s Day is taking place on 21st April between 10am and 3:30pm. It is looking like it is going to be a fantastic day, with more events and activities going on than previous years, so far continued over the page
East Cowes Business Association News by Simon Craddock we’ve confirmed the swingboats, Strong Arm Hammer, the coconut shy, Morris Dancers, RUG Band, Chain Ferry Gang and lots more including an Ice Cream Van, a facepainter and balloon modeller (you’ll be pleased to hear that it isn’t just me with some red and white face paints this year!) and so the list keeps growing. There will be several competitions and the best part, it’s free of charge! We are also giving all ECBA members the opportunity to have a space or table in Kings Square for free to promote their business in return for running an activity. We would love the square to be packed with lots of activities, so please get in touch now to book your space – this is a great opportunity to speak to Mum or Dad whilst the kids are occupied, hand out flyers, business cards or other promotional material. Please contact us as soon as possible to arrange what space and requirements you need. You will need to be up and ready by 10am and be there until 3:30pm. Most of the events are simply turn and take part, but please look out for posters over the coming few weeks for timings of the competition activities. The whole event is paid for by your local business community so all activities are free of charge, so please, return the favour and shop locally, use local tradespeople and services. I mentioned last month that Anne Wilson is retiring and I would like to thank her for her time, energy and ideas that she has given to the ECBA over the years. We would all like to wish her all the very best for the future and her many planned adventures.
Our website is constantly being tweaked and updated by Shaun, we are hoping that this will form a useful resource for both our members and you, the residents of East Cowes and Whippingham. Shaun does his best to try and explain the w’s and dots, the http and the protocol that makes it all work, but I have to confess, it’s all a bit like an aeroplane, I sort of understand how it works, just don’t get me to explain it! And that’s it, once again I have a run out of room. Have a great month and please remember to use local services, shops and facilities; by spending money in your town, you help your community flourish. Bringing the Surgery to your Doorstep by Dan Forster The Mobile Vet provides an Islandwide veterinary service in their bespoke mobile vehicles and also have a fully equipped veterinary surgery at the IOW Pet Centre, Watergate Road, Newport. New services on offer include CT scans and laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery. They are the only vets on the Island to offer these services. Laparoscopic surgery is standard for all human patients as it is significantly less painful. The surgery involves operating through two tiny incisions in the abdomen and utilising cameras & specialised tools through the holes. Patients are up and about much faster than an old fashioned spay. No more head collars and owners do not have to take days off work to look after their pet.
After securing several awards for customer service & innovation, including a recent Queen’s Award for Enterprise in Innovation and a trip to meet the Queen at Buckingham Palace; the team continue to offer a personalised approach with extended consultation times at the base & in clients’ homes allows the Mobile Vets to connect more with their patients/clients. Although the option to visit the base or have a home visit allows diversity, the home visitation service remains at the heart and soul of the business which continues to focus on providing an exemplary customer service For a caring and compassionate service whilst maintaining a professional and caring 40 Place Road, Cowes. A Cute Looking Long-Tailed Tit... The amount of talented photographers and wildlife we have on the Island is amazing and this months front cover picture is all thanks to Scott Newman who has captured this exquisite long-tailed tit in all its glory. This little bird is so cute and looks like a tiny ball of fluff. Scott told me “this photo was taken from my kitchen window. Two of them recently started to fly to my window frames, peering through the glass as they gripped onto the rubber surround. After a few hours I was able to snap photos of them as they went to and fro between the window and my washing line... probably no more than 2 metres away”. Scott has a passion for photography and remembers sitting in a darkened room looking at slides that his dad had taken whilst doing National Service in Aden and photographs his Mum had taken with her Kodak Instamatic but it wasn’t until later in life that this hobby really took hold. He originally started photographing bands in pubs and festivals and also liked to dabble with drawing but then invested his money into a good camera and equipment and his passion for wildlife photography grew. Scott is a self-employed gardener which allows him to work outside whilst earning money for photography equipment. Working outside also gives him access to a multitude of amazing insects that look great in ‘macro’ photos. If your garden would benefit from the skills of a professional gardener then feel free to call Scott on 07989045183 or 855765.

It’s a sad time. East Cowes Town is never going to be the same again now that owners of Valu-4-U, Angie and Roger have had to make the heart wrenching decision to close their business after 22 years. This decision is all due to the lack of passing trade due to the ongoing floating bridge problems. Angie and Roger have been the backbone of the town, they have walked in from Ryde when it’s being snowing, they have stayed in the shop all night when its been high tide and they have had the risk of flooding again. They are there first in the morning and the last shop to leave at night. They haven’t been able to take a wage for themselves in the past year and can no longer keep living through this uncertainty. They will be closing their doors in April and I am sure I am speaking for everyone here but they will be missed and the town will not be the same without them and it’s such a shame that this has happened through no fault of their own.

The first day of April is a day for pranksters and jokers to try to catch out as many victims as they can in the annual celebration of April Fools’ Day. An April Fool joke is revealed by shouting “April fool!” at the recipient and a in the UK the joking ceases at midday. Any person playing a joke after midday is the “April fool” themselves. Some newspapers and other media outlets report fake stories, which are usually explained the next day or below the news section in small letters. This year April Fools’ Day falls on Easter Sunday and whilst writing this I have listened to my friend plan to keep herself entertained by making the kids hunt for eggs she didn’t hide!!! Queen Victoria used to love playing April Fool jokes on her staff by pretending to be a window cleaner. She would turn up at Osborne House with a long ladder and a bucket, touting for work* *This may or may not be an April Fool

News Report from Town & County Cllr Karl Love - East Cowes. Email: karl.love@iow.gov.uk Facebook: Cllr Karl Love The town looks very different now the first stage of demolition has been completed by Red Funnel. We have many great things ahead for our town even though it may take time to achieve these. It’s been a long number of years since I have seen such financial difficulties. I remember the three day week and all kinds of shortages. Its important to end Austerity now and ensure our local services, NHS, Fire and Police Services are safe and properly funded. When times are difficult I know communities become strong, active and vocal. We do need this spirit as the cuts really bite hard on us all so it’s important to have at least a few positive moments for our people and this is what I and others will strive to achieve for our town. It was great to see Waitrose members of staff and other volunteer out picking rubbish from our town streets to mark The Great British Spring Clean with 15 bags of rubbish collected. Well done to them all.
end and our thoughts and hopes are with the workforce and continued support for this highly skilled industry in our town. I spotted this new Wightlink signage located in Fishbourne and it struck a cord for our Floating Bridge. This is exactly the modern technology that we need in East Cowes located at the Racecourse roundabout and a smaller version at the Bridge itself. The lack of clear information has added to the chaos of crossing the river and this shows a positive way forward and how our county council should be progressing and not using dated tin signs. This in cutting edge technology could be operators by our bridge workers instantly to give direction in real time. This is what I requested for our town.
I’m sure you will all also agree that the former East Cowes Doctors surgery is looking better and brighter. GKN is one of our towns leading world recognised cutting edge industries. There is hardly an airline in the sky that does not have GKN components made for them from East Cowes. GKN has changed ownership and names over the years and they are very important to our towns people and Island Employment. It will be a worrying time for all employees as the company faces more changes. It is so important to maintain its operation here in East Cowes and GKN management team have worked hard to this 14
The Norris Castle consultation proposal date has now been confirmed to take place on the 29th March at the Town Hall. This is to continued over the page
News Report from Town & County Cllr Karl Love continued show the outline proposals of the Castle and Spring Hill Estates. I hope you are all able to go along and make your comments known. I stand by my comments that whilst we want to save the Castle, I do not see the need to carve up a precious historic habitat and landscape to achive this. If we allow housing or lodges to be built on Grade 1 listed land it will change the landscape for ever and this is why it’s been protected, to prevent this destruction and preserve it in an historical form for future generations to enjoy. I will review all your comments from the event. Finally may I make an urgent plea for support of our towns small shops and businesses. We are all very aware of the impact of the Floating Bridge and several of our Town shops will be forced to close unless we can respond. I urge you to please spend just a
few pounds on our high street to save our shops. My next surgery will take place at Sea Breeze Cafe on Thursday 5th April and Thursday 3rd May from 10.30 to 12.30
