Welcome to the April issue. I’m not sure where to start this month, but feel that I have to mention the Coronavirus outbreak that seems to be the only topic in the news at the moment. It’s a very unpredictable time with nobody really knowing how this is going to pan out. We must continue good hand hygiene and just take it one day at a time. Now on to something positive... whilst I’m writing this the sun is shining and I have washing on the line and it seems to be drying. Let’s hope this is a sign of what is to come. Easter is just around the corner and there are many Easter themed events happening across the Island. Our ‘Dates for your Diary’ section can be found on pages 12 and 13. Please note with the ongoing issues around Coronavirus some of the listed events may be subject to change.

Not Gone… Just Relocated! Visitors to the hospital will have noticed that The Friends of St Mary’s have moved from the foyer cafe at the main entrance to make way for a commercial outlet. The new Friends’ cafe is now located in the north end of the hospital, next to the Outpatients Department. Although it is “very much smaller” the volunteers are staying positive. Chairman, Lesley Myland says “it all feels a bit strange at the moment for the cafe not to be in the foyer, but we are determined to carry on serving patients, visitors and hospital staff with our cafes, the twice daily trolley service to the wards, and from our brand new shop. As you know, every penny of profit we make goes to assisting the hospital to buy equipment which makes patient and staff experiences better. Please keep supporting us as you always have so that we can build on the £1.5 million we have already raised in recent years. The new shop is bigger and we are improving our range of refreshments, cards and gifts. We are in a better position now too, as we open directly on to the main corridor opposite the reception area at the front of the hospital. So that has been an exciting challenge”. You can still find the Friends serving refreshments at the Laidlaw Day Hospital and now at their new location. You will find their usual good coffee or tea, sandwiches, toasted teacakes, a variety of snacks and newspapers, and of course the usual warm welcome and good service they have been providing for 32 years at St Mary’s. Don’t forget that they are also in the Ryde Wellbeing Centre.

during this outbreak. Please don’t panic buy goods from our local stores. Remember not everyone can travel out of town to obtain goods that have been sold out locally. Please support your neighbours who might be less mobile and concerned. We need to work together as a community.

There are a lot of winter bugs out their which are not connected with the Coronavirus and our doctors are busy treating them. There has been a reported increase in people calling the East Cowes Medical Centre switch board. Please be patient in getting through to them at this time. It is also necessary for the switchboard staff to ask medical questions in order to direct your enquiry to the most appropriate medical team members. If you suspect you have been infected with the Coronavirus please do not go to the Medical Centre. Call 111 to seek advice and self-isolate. It is important that the virus is not brought into the medical centre. I have been asked to direct you to the BBC website which has lots of useful up As Easter approaches I wish you all a to-date information, signs and symptom of very Happy Easter and I know that Kezi’s Kindness would be very grateful to receive the virus. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news. Finally, I want to reassure all residents that I am in contact with the IWC Public Health Team, our East Cowes Medical Centre and Pharmacy’s about the Coronavirus outbreak. I have also been in contact with Red Funnel and local retail stores. There are some important messages that I need to communicate but importantly we need to stay calm and support each other
