Dear Readers Welcome to the August issue and thank you for picking up a copy. The school holidays are here, the Island is once again becoming a hot spot for holiday makers and personally I still don’t think its warm enough to go swimming in the sea yet!!!! The weather is hit and miss at the moment and that is all I am going to say about it! August on the Island really signifies Carnival time and its a great time to get out and about to other towns and join in the fun. You will find details of carnivals and other events happening in August on the ‘Dates for you Diary’ which are on pages 16, 17 and 18. As usual you will find news and information in this issue along with some great advertisers who are always grateful for your business so please keep using them. I recently met with a family who experienced a life changing tragedy last year and are now helping other families and you can read all about it on page 10. I hope you enjoy this issue and look forward to catching up with you again next month. Debbie

When life gives you lemons make lemonade For a lovely refreshing summer drink, homemade lemonade ticks all the boxes. There are plenty of recipes out there from the deluxe to the basic. I like to think this one is midway. You won’t be tied to the kitchen spending hours making it but it definitely tastes better than dish water. Take about 6 lemons (unwaxed preferably) and peel some strips of rind from a couple of them and put aside for decoration later. Give the lemons a good roll over the worktop to get the juices flowing and then cut in half and squeeze all that lovely juice out into a big jug (make sure to remove all the pips). Add 150g of caster sugar and stir. Then add two mugs of boiling water into the lemon juice and sugar mix and stir until all the sugar has dissolved. Next top up with 600ml of cold water and mix everything together. Put in the strips of peel for garnish and put in the fridge to completely cool. Serve with ice and lemon slices 5

Town Mayor Report for East Cowes From Margaret Webster

(Tel No: 01983 299082 and leave a message for the Mayor) By the time you read this the young school children will have been on holiday for a week or so. I do hope that the weather is beach friendly that this year you all enjoy the Esplanade recreation facilities. I had the honour of representing East Cowes at the official launch of the Red Funnels RED JET 6 on Monday 4th July 2016, by the Princess Royal, Princess Anne on Cowes Trinity jetty. I was in the introduction line up with other guests and then afterwards was amongst those invited to the official reception at the Royal Yacht Squadron, where we were once again introduced to the Princess Royal. Her highness had certainly done her homework, in our conversation she was interested in the future of East Cowes, very obviously knew of some of the developments that had already taken place and was interested in the future of the Town. It was a beautiful day and culminated with a fly past by spitfire planes and an air display by the Red Devils.

towards ongoing costs to help with the rising demand for help in the area which has increased by 23% during the first half of this year. It was resolved to donate ÂŁ500. It was also resolved that the Town Council would respond to the IW Parking Strategy by stating that East Cowes needs a long term car park. We understand that there will skateboarding sessions once a week in the East Cowes Skate Park, during the summer school holidays. The Pavilion Building is open Monday, Wednesday and Fridays during the mornings serving coffees/cakes. Please support.

The Town Council is concerned to hear rumours that the library is a) being closed or b) given to someone else to run. Can I clarify that neither rumour is true. East Cowes Community Library is leased to East Cowes Town Council by the Isle of Wight Council with a resource agreement for the library and a lease for the At the June Town Council meeting we were premises and run by volunteers. It is continuing informed that Destination Cowes, (newly to remain open on the advertised days with formed group of East and West Cowes the assistance of our appreciated volunteers Businesses and organisations), first planned and the Town Council have agreed recently, event was to be in 2017. We had resolved at to appoint a paid co-ordinator to manage the May meeting that we would decide at the the day to day running of the library. Over June meeting whether to make a financial the last year the footfall has fallen and your contribution towards it. In June we discussed support is needed to maintain this worthwhile the matter further, a proposal to defer the community asset. So when you are next in decision to a later date was rejected and a town, please pop in and see what the library resolve was made that the Town Council would has to offer. If anyone would like to become a pull out of the Destination Cowes. We are going volunteer, information can be obtained in the to investigate further to promote East Cowes library. ourselves, we will be discussing this at the July meeting. INFORMATION - Please Note: The clerk reported that 32 residents in East Cowes work as volunteers for the Good Neighbourhood Scheme. Age UK have requested that Town Council give support 6

East Cowes Town Council Meetings now start at 6.30p.m on the 3rd Thursday of each month. Planning meeting commences at 6pm (if the Town Council are in receipt of any applications)

Imagine being in the situation where you go from being fit and healthy leading a happy life without a care in the world to being told you have a brain tumour… Well this is what happened to Mark Grimes and everyday this is happening to children and adults across the world, the UK and on the Island. In a matter of moments your whole world can be turned upside down and vigorously shaken. The positive to this story is that Mark has survived and a year since being given the devastating news and undergoing brain surgery he has now returned to full duties at work as a fire fighter. Unfortunately this is not always the case for everyone… Mark and his wife Kathryn have taken this tragedy and learnt that this could happen to anyone, the tumour wasn’t hereditary and is not curable but it is controllable and through their journey they have realised that they were alone most of the time, there was only the minimum of help and support from others here on the Island and this is where The Wight Brainy Bunch originated. The aim of The Wight Brainy Bunch is to support and raise funds for Brain Tumour Charities and Smile4Wessex for intensive research purposes and for ongoing support to all patients. More closer to home they have set up a support group which is not just for the patient, but also for family and friends as they all need help and support for the changes that are taking place in their lives. The support group is held on the last Tuesday of the month at Wessex Cancer Trust, Lugley Street, Newport from 6pm -7pm but most times it runs over as new friendships are made and built upon. Anyone going through any brain trauma/injury is welcome to go along. You will be able to meet with other people who are going through or have been through the same and they may be able to offer advice and support so nobody need ever feel alone. The Wight Brainy Bunch has been holding fund raising events and in June they had their Mad Hatters Tea Party which raised a further £654 and so far in total they have raised £15,032. They hope to continue to raise much more than this and through their ongoing dedication they will be able to support many more Island families coping with this devastating disease. In an ideal world enough money could be raised so that facilities were available here on the Island to cut down on the stress of having to travel to the mainland for consultations and appointments. Their next big event is the Blue Light and Black Tie Charity Ball which is being held on Saturday 3rd September at Ryde Castle. Tickets are £35 and include a 2 course menu and you can book your tickets at www.thewightbrainybunch.org.uk/product/blue-light-black-tie-charity-ball-tickets or by calling 07850 255984. Please support this charity as much as you can as you never know who might be next to be affected by this disease as I bet you didn’t know that 16,000 people each year are diagnosed with a brain tumour and more children and adults under 40 die of a brain tumour than any other form of cancer. Before I met Mark and Kathryn I had no idea about these statistics and meeting them has opened my eyes and now I know why they are so passionate about The Wight Brainy Bunch and helping other families. 10

Councillor Luisa Hillard – County Councillor for East Cowes. Phone/ text: 07964 869341 or email luisa.hillard@iow.gov.uk The summer holidays are here again, which those of us with young children dread! – six weeks of struggling with childcare, bickering and even more toys strewn around the house than usual. With regard to my Council work it feels as though I’m forever waiting for information or action to progress projects. Certainly we’ve been holding our breath regarding Red Funnel for several months now, whilst they decide whether to appeal or submit new plans. During this time I have been in contact with both them and local stakeholders to try and ensure that we can get the best outcome for East Cowes. At the time of writing this we are waiting for the decision to be made public.
