Your Local Community Magazine
Welcome to the August issue and if you are a regular reader of Island Magazines I would like to take this opportunity to thank you on behalf of myself, advertisers and contributors for picking up a copy and supporting this popular community magazine. If you have only recently come across this publication I hope you find it an interesting read? Our main aim is to play a key part in the local community by sharing local news, information and supporting local businesses by offering them a platform to promote themselves and the services they offer. I always like to give a little mention about the weather, and all I have to say this month is wow.... it’s been hot! The Island is getting busy and the calendar is full with local events and carnivals and you can find details of these on pages 12 and 13. There is a lot of hard work from volunteers in the preparation of these events and I hope you get the chance to enjoy some or all of the carnivals that the various towns host. It’s what summer on the Isle of Wight is all about. I hope you all have a great August and I look forward to catching up with you next month.

News Report for East Cowes from Mayor Peter Lloyd (Tel No: 01983 299082 and leave a message for the Mayor)
Floating Bridge: following a lengthy
correspondence with the Solent Local Enterprise Partnership (SLEP) about our concerns with regard to the operation of the FB6 and the performance of the IWC in their managing of the FB6, I was invited to attend a SLEP finance broad meeting at Portsmouth and give a 6 minute presentation. So I and the Mayor of Cowes did the presentation and 3 others from the Stakeholders group who accompanied us were able to ask and help answer questions. The Board members were interested in what we had to say about what we considered to be going wrong and why, also the effect that the bridge was having on the local economies. The directors asked that we continue to monitor and that we have an input into their forthcoming report. We left after 20 minutes or so, so not bad for a 6 minute slot.
Cowes and present gifts to His Highness Prince Rostislav Romanov and other visiting dignitaries whom had a direct connection with the event and the Grand Duchess Elizabeth Romanov Society. Saturday saw the unveiling of the Romanov Memorial at the Jubilee Recreation ground. Our own David Hill was MC with Paul Oxborrow from the Grand Duchess Elizabeth Society. The Monument was unveiled by The Lord Lieutenant major general Sir Martin White and His Highness Prince Rostislav Romanov. This was followed by a Russian Orthodox service of Blessing. Our own Nicola Flux-Edmonds and Philippa Hunt carried out the lighting of the flame of Friendship and Hope.
I must mention and thank David Hill whose idea this event was. David was the coordinator along with Maria from the Studio School: I am extremely disappointed with the Education Minister and Grand Duchess Elizabeth Romanov Society. the Inspire Academy Trust and their decision My thanks to all the local volunteers who gave their help freely with the setting up, to close the school next year. I strongly feel that those who showed support (and in great running, manning, dismantling and tidying up after. Also may I thank the Studio School, numbers) have been completely ignored by its staff and the students whose help was the decision makers. I ask why? I also never greatly appreciated at the memorial event. did have a reply from our MP and Leader There has been a lot of volunteer man hours of the IWC. There is a gap in the Islands given over the weekend and I thank you all. education system which the Studio School helped to fill and was much needed. Finally: Can I also thank members of the public and the emergency services for their The Romanov Memorial: The assistance and help given at a car accident weekend of events from 6th – 8th July were in which I was involved at Fairlee road in a great success. TEAM WORK IS WORKING TOGETHER I hope you are making the most of the summer? It has been wonderful to see so many residents/visitors with their families having fun in the paddling pool, play-park, on the beach, having picnics and enjoying food, including ice-cream, from the local cafe. The weather so far has been glorious. May I request your help regarding a few matters regarding the above facilities: The paddling pool is for people, should you see anyone abusing this facility i.e., dogs swimming, bicycle cleaning or any other inappropriate behaviour, please contact the Clerk to East Cowes Town Council on 01983 299082 and leave a message. I am sure there are very few people taking a bath in the same water used to wash their dog and bicycles. Rubbish bins are provided for use by the general public, apologies if they are full, especially, after a warm sunny weekend. The bins are emptied regularly, however when necessary, please take your rubbish home leaving the area neat and tidy for everyone to enjoy. Leaving your rubbish turns our seafront into a rubbish tip and costs you to clear.

It has been said, that if you place the palm of your hand onto concrete and you cannot take the heat, neither can your doggy’s paws. Always have your poo bag available to pick up poo and place in the nearest rubbish bin, not the trees or fences. No one wants to take poo home with them, especially if it isn’t your dog. Please take responsibility for your pet(s). East Cowes Esplanade is a hidden treasure and by working together we can all do our part in keeping our area clean and tidy. In taking responsibility we will all have a fun time at the seaside. Thank you for reading my thoughts and feel free to email me at janeranntowncouncillor@ gmail.com if you have any issues that you would like to discuss. 10

News Report from Town & County Cllr Karl Love - East Cowes. Email: karl.love@iow.gov.uk Facebook: Cllr Karl Love It’s been hot, hot, hot this month and I hope you have all been slapping on lots of sunscreen to help keep you safe from the sun. The Esplanade paddling pool has certainly been used well during these past weeks and many people are reporting how the sea water quality seems to have improved following Southern Waters improvements made at the Albany Pumping station. Let’s hope this continues.
unacceptable and I have made many suggestions for alternatives which keep the area safe and remove the ugly fencing. I met with Bill Murphy from Isle of Wight Council in July and while we had a positive meeting, what is needed is some investment of resources into a proper scheme of appropriate fencing into the area. I will continue to press for improvements.
The Romanov weekend proved to be a unique and fantastic experience. Everything went to plan thanks to David Hill and his fantastic inspiration, leadership and organisation skills. The monument, a gift from the Grand Duchess Elizabeth Society and led by Maria Harwood now stands in the Jubilee Recreation Grounds. There are lots of people to thank whose names will go into a history book to be written soon. You will all be mentioned for your important roles and contributions.
The Crossways Development is still being discussed and being pursued and pressed forward for implementation by the Isle of Wight Council. The Isle of Wight Council political leadership stated at last months scrutiny meeting that building affordable housing was its new priority. It is therefore clear to me that they intend to press ahead despite our community objections. There are many empty properties still remaining vacant at Hawthorne Meadows.
The First stage of the Red Funnel carpark redevelopment has now been completed and we hope that this will make some difference to our town and traffic especially as the summer holidays are upon us.
At last months Scrutiny Meeting I continued to fight for improved communications and resolutions to the Floating Bridge. The IWC seems happy just to get it working where as I and many others press for the service to be delivered that we were promised and are paying for. This council seems incapable of resolving the issues to the agreed specifications and whist it might accept second best our communities of East and West Cowes will not.
Our lovely old umbrella tree will shortly be surrounded, if not done so already, by fencing put in place by Island Roads which they say is to protect the public from falling debris. The tree has looked lovely this summer and our town council still maintains that the tree should remain in place until it is no longer viable. This could take many years and we still wait for our own tree report. I do desperately hope that we can save it but there is pressure to remove it which is intense. I also have strongly objected to the esplanade herring-bone fencing which is excessive and makes our esplanade look like a prison camp. After 4 years this new fencing is simply 14
There is still no movement on the Kingston link road either, which would make such a difference to lives of local people. Our islands political leadership is either incapable of addressing local needs or choosing not to listen. Finally I wish all of you a great Cowes Week and summer school holidays. Karl
