Blankets of Animals is a small charity set up by animal lover Sam English. With the help of local residents who have been making a steady stream of six and 12 inch knitted and crocheted squares which in turn go to Sam who makes them into blankets. Sam then posts to animal shelters on the Island and across the UK. Sam also collects knitted dog coats and fully made blankets and she would like to give a big shout out to all readers to see if anyone is interested in knitting squares, making the final blankets or helping with posting the packages.

East Cowes Town Council - Clerks Report During August East Cowes Town Council will be upgrading the town hall. The main hall is going to be fully repainted, the flooring refurbished and polished and new curtains fitted. As a result, the usual activities and groups will be having a break until September. The Town Council is doing it’s best to ensure that local people have the opportunity to hear about planned changes in the town. During the last few months they have invited representatives of various bodies involved in the alterations to the road layout in East Cowes to their meetings. Peter Hayward (Island Highway & Transport Consultant) and James Brewer (Savills, acting for Red Funnel) attended and reassured councillors that full consideration has been given to the road layout, parking and the provision of signage to ensure the free flow of traffic at busy times. A public meeting is planned in due course. The Crossways Development is a contentious matter. Councillors will be meeting with their neighbouring councillors from Whippingham to prepare a joint response to this application. MP Bob Seely will also be attending a council meeting shortly to give his views on this development. Thank you to everyone who attended one of the exhibition days held recently in East Cowes and Whippingham. The Town Council are planning a public meeting once the planning application has been lodged with the IWC Planning Authority.

Keen to encourage new Arts and Culture events in the town it was agreed that the East Cowes Community Partnership which includes representatives of the Town Council would be best placed to lead on these initiatives. They will be seeking out projects that will enhance Art and Culture in East Cowes. So, if you have any ideas please contact us and we will pass them on. The Town Council has on-going concerns about the reliability of the Floating Bridge and the latest statistics received state that it is 99.4% reliable. Councillors had attended the Floating Bridge User Group meeting where concerns about the large number of staff members on board and issues with the user cards were raised. Finally – can you help, or do you know someone who can? The Town Council is currently seeking a permanent Public Toilet Cleaner/Litter Picker to work part time 7 days a week – 10 hours a week in the winter, 20 hours per week in the summer. Details are available from The Town Clerk, East Cowes Town Council, Town Hall, York Ave, East Cowes, PO32 6RU Tel: 01983 299082 Email: clerk@ eastcowestowncouncil.co.uk Wishing everyone a wonderful summer... don’t forget to use the paddling pool and other brilliant outdoor spaces in the town provided and supported by the Town Council.

Boom Boom!! This month’s front cover certainly shows the trust that can develop between wildlife and a photographer. Whilst relaxing and basking in the sunshine this beautiful creature was happy to be digitally captured by David Cramp. David is a ‘hobby photographer’ but started out in his school days as an artist, drawing and painting subjects that caught his eye and on occasions a bit of photography with a box camera. He then moved on to a different type of art and made a career as an antique restorer/french polisher but when digital cameras first appeared on the scene his interest in photography returned and has now become an extension of his art. What David would have previously painted he can now capture with his camera. His images are for his own personal use but are gaining plenty of attention when shared via social media. David says “there is no way in the world I could take photos to order – the subject has to be something that just catches my eye” and I am sure everyone will agree that this picture really does catch the eye. 9

News Report from Cllr Karl Love continued to try to find solutions to the landslip issues. The town community regeneration partnership group have been working to find solutions and make recommendations for the regeneration of the Esplanade whilst keeping it in a classically unspoiled Esplanade style. The creation of a woodland walk which traverses the landslip areas creating access to Castle point is one of the key priorities. I am fully supportive of this initiative and look forward to supporting the groups progressive plans. The Hovercraft Museum Trust Southsea, has gifted to our Town a wonderful Artefact to be erected as a lasting and fitting monument to the birth place and home of the Hovercraft innovation - East Cowes. East Cowes 2019 plans included and set out to bring home to our island, in Partnership with the Hovercraft Museum Trust Southsea, an artefact from the Princess Margaret Hovercraft, to be erected in recognition of the achievements and innovations of our town people, workforce and it’s marine industries. Lin Kemp has been working tirelessly to achieve this for our community and a 6.5 meters high propeller and pylon have been obtained. I requested and was able to obtain funding from the East Cowes Town Council. Lin, the Town Council and I are working together to achieve the creation of a fitting tribute and we have now taken position of the propeller which is being stored at Wight Shipyard with many thanks to Peter Morton. The propeller will be erected in our town hopefully by next year. We are still working on its exact location but we intend this to be placed in a suitable position along the Esplanade. We will of course plan a grand unveiling celebration for it for all our community to enjoy and participate. This brings my report to an end and I hope you enjoy the rest of the summer and Cowes Week Events.
