Lockdown has been a busy time for local charity Feline Welfare who were inundated with homeless and stray cats and new kittens. Nikki and her team of foster parents have been kept on their toes ensuring the cats have stayed safe during this period but the time has come to find forever homes for many of them. Our article on page 8 features just a few of the ones ready to move on and they are eagerly waiting by the phone ready for you to call and meet them. On the subject of animals, don’t you think the front cover picture is amazing? We are lucky to have so many talented photographers on the island and you can find the story behind this months star on page 7. This month we have included a rather unusual recipe. Some of you will already be avid fans but some many never of heard of it - check out page 12 and let us know what you think.

News Report from Town & County Cllr Karl Love - East Cowes. Email: karl.love@iow.gov.uk Facebook: Cllr Karl Love Yet again it’s been a busy month with lots going on. We have had road closures all around our town for resurfacing, a floating bridge closure with a replacement launch, the purchase of Venture Quays, the recovery and reopening of the island in redress for our summer season to support the economy. We also welcome to our town ‘Gallery Cowes’ a wood craft and carver Crafts shop We also now have to wear facemasks when we enter any shops and businesses along with using public transport. It’s imperative that we continue to resist the spread of Covid-19 through social distancing. It is with great regret that East Cowes Town Council has taken the decision, as a result of strict government guidelines, to keep the esplanade paddling pool closed. The conditions imposed by government for Lido’s and pools are so strict that many of them are not able to be operated this summer. Isle of Wight council is continuing with online meetings. It has been very difficult to influence the operations and politics at County Hall and sadly there is very little scrutiny taking place at this time. Council meetings are now starting to take place however it is not the same thing as being able to look someone in the eye and making your case to full council. Good governance requires positive scrutiny and it has been almost impossible to scrutinise important issues such as oil drilling in an open and transparent format. I am against oil or fracking for gas on our island. I remain concerned about the government’s announcement that we should build, build, build! My contacts within the housing market suggest that the majority of new

home owners enquiring about selling or purchasing a new home on our island are in fact from mainland residents wanting to relocate to the island. It is clear that our island administration will want to progress with its building proposals to satisfy government policy requirements. This will include Venture Quays building at the Albany Road carpark and Albany Buildings. This is a condition imposed by Homes England, a government quango and one of the reasons why Isle of Wight Council want to purchase the land. What matters is that we ensure that whatever building proposals are presented for approval, we the local people have a say and the construction proposals are of the highest quality to meet the needs There is no news yet about the future of the Crossways Field development. I doubt that any progress will be made towards this development before the next local elections in May 2021. Of course I might be wrong but the field has been planted for this year by the resident farmer. There has also been no progress of the planned proposals at the Folly Inn. Our Esplanade has been a great source of inspiration and support allowing people to keep their social distance and enjoy the summer. I respectfully request that no fires are lit on the beach or in the woods and that if the bins are full, please take your rubbish home for safe disposal. A number of parking tickets have been issued to vehicles parking in the turning area outside the toilet blocks on the esplanade and in front of the new gates. This area is protected by double yellow lines and cctv. The area is being patrolled day and night and I have observed a number of vehicles continued over the page

News Report from Town & County Cllr Karl Love - East Cowes. Email: karl.love@iow.gov.uk Facebook: Cllr Karl Love drive around the closed gate which clearly states ‘Road Closed’. It is an offence to park any vehicle on a closed road and they can be issued with a parking ticket and issued three points unless there is permission to do so. The gate has been placed there by island roads to help keep the road safe and to protect pedestrians. I continue to work with island roads and hope that I will have some positive news soon about an improvement community scheme. This will help improve the Esplanade landslip Environment. I will keep you informed of our progress and discussions. With the cancellation of many of our local and community celebrations for VE day and an event which we were working towards for Cowes Week the East Cowes crafters have started to look to the future and 2021. They are currently working on a new decoration for our town arch for September which has become quite a focal point. They are also working on a mosaic made from wood panels. All are invited to participate in this project which will be placed in the town for all to enjoy. You can receive more information by logging on to their Facebook page at www.facebook.com/East-Cowes-VE-Celebration-Crafters100482871406708/ There is some exciting news about an event which our crafters are planning for an East Cowes Festival in 2021. East Cowes is to have an Elephant Festival to celebrate and remember the Indian elephant presented to Queen Victoria and the Frank James hospital which was built following the death of Frank James killed by an elephant in Africa. It will be a really fun event which everyone can join in by painting, colouring and creating their own images of elephants to be displayed in and around the town. Our town is so lucky and blessed to have a wonderful crafting community which has helped to brighten our town over the last few years and we look forward to seeing their fun creations in the future. Also Lin Kemp and her wonderful group of needle workers and stitchers have started work on the second East Cowes Tapestry Panel following on from the Royal Panel uncovered last year by His Royal Highness the Duke of Kent. This second panel is about East Cowes Architecture and will contain some wonderful crafting and heritage images. We look forward to seeing this panel unveiled sometime in the future. I wish you all a happy summer and remember to slap on plenty of sunscreen on what we hope will be some warm sunny days.

Well Hello There… All I can say about this month’s front cover picture is WOW… I’m sure you will all agree with me that the photo is stunning and is all thanks to local photographer Tara Harvey. Her patience certainly paid off and she was rewarded with some stunning poses from not just this fox but the whole family.

Cloud Bread Like many others I have recently ‘tweaked’ my diet and one of the main things I’ve given up/cut down on is carbs but one thingt I am really missing is bread. On my quest to find an alternative that wasn’t carb loaded I came across ‘cloud bread’, duly named for it’s light fluffy texture. I was promised it will satisfy my cravings without undoing any of the benefits I have already achieved. For those who don’t know, Cloud Bread is high in protein and extremely low in carbs, making it the perfect sandwich bread for those on a low carb, gluten free, or grain free diet. They take a bit of getting used to but are so easy to make and you can freeze them or keep in the fridge for up to 3 days. Here is my simple tried and tested recipe. Ingredients 4oz cream cheese 3 egg yolks 1 teaspoon baking powder 3 egg whites Salt and pepper Method Heat over to 150C/130C fan/gas2 and line 2 large baking sheets with baking paper. In a large bowl whisk the egg whites with the baking powder using an electric whisk, until stiff peaks form. In another bowl whisk together the egg yolks and cream cheese until smooth, pale and frothy. Add salt and pepper. Next, fold the egg whites a spoonful at a time into the yolk mixture. Be as gentle as you can so you don’t knock out too much of the air. Carefully dollop the mixture onto the prepared baking sheets and gently spread into even 4 inch circles. If the mixture is a little runny when you get to the bottom of THIS SIZE ADVERT the bowl don’t use the last few spoonfuls COULD BE - only use the fluffy mix on top. Makes approximately 6. YOURS FOR JUST £13 Bake for 20 minutes or until lightly golden in colour. Allow to cool for a few moments before carefully removing with a palette knife. 12

East Cowes Town Council - Clerks Report The Town Council have met for the first time since lockdown began, using the Zoom software and it was good to be able to see and hear other Councillors at last. The meeting went well, despite a few teething problems. Hopefully, we will be getting back to a more normal way of meeting soon, although social distancing measures will need to be observed. Members of East Cowes and Whippingham communities, who have needed help and support during the Covid-19 period, have been admirably supported by a fantastic team of local volunteers, together with Councillor Michael Paler and Councillor Karl Love, with Cllr Paler co-ordinating this incredible effort. The volunteer hub is a 7 day a week operation and has been running for the past four and a half months. More than 500 individuals are being looked after by the volunteers. Medical collections and deliveries make up most of the requests, followed by shopping. For the members of the community that just needed to hear a friendly voice, there have been more than 700 calls made by volunteers and Councillors. Cllr Paler is now planning for the next step, which will be supporting the most vulnerable to adapt to coming out of lock down. There are many people making scrub gowns and face coverings and face masks for the whole island and the hospital, and East Cowes Crafters have also supplied craft packs to people in the community in need of something to occupy their time. Our sincere thanks go to each and every one of them on behalf of the Town Council and the community! 14

We have now reopened the public toilets in Osborne Road and the Esplanade, as well as the Tennis Courts. From the 4th July the play parks, the skate park, the outdoor gym and the MUGA were reopened. These facilities are being sanitised daily (not weekends) by Council staff, but residents and their children still need to respect government guidelines and ensure they wash their hands before and after using the equipment. We are hoping that a library service can be offered to users from the Town Hall soon in a safe and controlled manner. Staff are currently looking at how this can be achieved following government guidelines. The Cowes Harbour Advisory Committee stakeholder representatives met recently, to discuss several proposals including an idea to combine Cowes Harbour Commission (CHC) and Cowes Town Waterfront Trust (CTWT); a potential application by CHC to the Charity Commission to register as a charity and the requirements for a modernising Harbour Revision Order. The CHAC encourage and invite all interested parties to read more details on their proposals, which are available via the following links: cowesharbourcommission. co.uk/consultation and cowesyachthaven. com/news. The public consultation has a 3rd August deadline. Discussions will be taking place between East Cowes and Cowes Town Councils regarding these proposals and a collective response determined at the Full Council meeting. The Town Council are in discussion with IW Council regarding the IWC’s purchase continued over the page

East Cowes Town Council Clerks Report of the Venture Quay site from Homes England. The IW Council have confirmed that the Town Council will be given the opportunity for full consultation and input throughout the planning and development of all these sites and will be fully consulted in the development of the refresh of the former SEEDA Masterplan for East Cowes. We will also be fully consulted in the redrafting of the IWC Housing Strategy, made necessary following the effects of Covid–19. East Cowes Town Council are resolute that the views of East Cowes residents are taken into account throughout these consultations that will shape the future of our Town. The Town Council has now received funding for the Community Hub/Library that will be built alongside the Town Hall, and so we have an exciting time coming up in the next few months as the project starts to progress. Watch this space!!!
