Whilst writing this the sun is shining, the temperature is in the early to mid-20’s and it looks like Summer has arrived... but I am also aware that this can change at the drop of a hat and one part of the island may be enjoying the sun and yet another area at the same time can be taking shelter from the rain. s summer finally here???
We are very lucky to be surrounded by some amazing beaches that are just perfect for swimming and are ideal on those hot days when nothing is more refreshing than a dip in the sea, whether it’s just your big toe, up to your knees or are really brave and commits fully to the task in hand. Inside this issue you will find news, information, some great advertisers, the puzzle pages, our ‘dates for your diary’ section and much more. Our aim has always been to reach out to the community to share news and information and if you have community news you want to share, please get in touch with us via any of the means below. I hope you have a great August and get the chance to enjoy the freedom of meeting up with family and friends after such a long break and you get to enjoy our beautiful island which, come rain or shine, is one of the best places to live. Keep safe and I look forward to catching up with you again next month.

News Report from Town & County Cllr Karl Love - East Cowes. Email: karl.love@iow.gov.uk Facebook: Cllr Karl Love It seems that the early part of the summer has been a complete washout in terms of the weather after what was a lovely start in March. Luckily, we were able to avoid the damp weather for the visit of her Highness Princess Olga Romanov on July 3rd. A Great community effort was made in helping to create an impressive visit event by local people including cleaning and raking the gravel by Brenda Brook-Web, creation of flower decorations by Chezabelles, Cowes Moovers delivering the chairs and Lin Kemp who made the table coverings and decorations. David Hill did his usual great job in coordinating and creating the event. We were lent a couple of flags at the last minute by Ian Molyneux after ours were damaged in the wind. The visit was recorded by a TV production company following HH Princess Olga as she explores her ancestors Heritage and legacy. The program is to be aired in February 2022 and I’ll keep you informed when I hear more.
children turning blue from the paint and another failure of the pumps in the public toilets. A decision was made by East Cowes Town Council to place temporary toilets in the nearby car park along the Esplanade as an emergency measure. You will have also noticed that there are lots of new picnic benches which have arrived along the Esplanade and placed near to the tennis courts for your use and enjoyment. Some of these benches have accessibility for mobility and push chair users. We are aware that the flagpole has been damaged in the high winds near our new flower boat. Hopefully this will be fixed soon.
There has been a lot of noise made again about the Crossways Development. As I write this the draft Island Plan is just about to go out for consultation, and this is another opportunity for local people to make their voice heard. Our new island council administration has inherited an empty purse. The truth is that we will struggle to build The East Cowes Elephant festival is about any Isle of Wight Council properties in to kick off on a smaller scale than was the coming years unless there is significant first expected along with the displaying investment by developers. The Crossways of the Mosaic art panels created by many town residents during lockdown. They are field and Beatrice Avenue were given to the people on the scales in exchange for being displayed in the early part of August the parcel of land upon which today the for several weeks. You will see many of house used by Abdul Karim stands. This is the elephants that have been created and specifically why there is an S-bend leading knitted, exhibitions and displays in local from Osborne house around to Victoria shop windows and around the Town Hall. The exhibition was created during the winter Grove. East Cowes town council are seeking to list this land as a community asset. The by our town crafters to help keep people’s previous administration brought forward minds occupied during the winter months. plans to build on this land quickly discovered We are hoping that we will be able to have that the costs of developing it would be a picnic on the green on the 7th of August significant and their plan was flawed in its with music and entertainment. design. There has been no discussion about bringing this building proposal back into Sadly, we seem to have been beset by a the forefront and the Tory Group who have number of equipment failures along the Esplanade, including the paddling pool with made such a noise about this on social
News Report from Cllr Karl Love continued media are doing so for their own political reasons. We do need to recognise that we are contractually bound by the contract signed by the previous administration to bring forward housing for building at Venture Quay site. The Marefield Road site is specifically earmarked for this purpose. However, we’re all aware how heavily contaminated this area is but in reality, there will be some building. The alternative is to give back the buildings and receive just £1 for the entire site which we taxpayers have paid 1.2 million for. We would also lose control of anything that might be built on that site, the Columbine building, the barracks and Albany buildings If we do not carry forward some kind of house building on that site as required in the contract by 2024. Officers of the council are trying to extend that period of time to give us more flexibility and I say it again, Isle of Wight Council does not have any funding as a result of the continued austerity and cutbacks forced on our island people. In fact, the situation is so serious that we will struggle to maintain services on our island unless the promised island deal arrives from Boris Johnson. I am however feeling hopeful that there will be some kind of settlement but what that will look like is anybody’s guess at this time. Finally with the introduction of a new administration and the events of the last few months of chaotic management of Red Funnel Ferries impacting significantly in our town there is to be a Town emergency plan. We cannot continue as our town is and our town is not a car park it is a working town with real businesses, and they have the same right to access and to operate as any large organisation. We now have a real opportunity to influence and develop our town as we would want to see it developed within the limits of our land ownership and
highways influence. There will be an announcement about the floating bridge soon. I can see that we have all had enough of the floating bridge as it currently stands and that we will take action to address this in a positive way. This is not an easy fix not least because of the money it will cost but we are determined to stop putting sticking plasters on something which is not fit for purpose. I will try to say more about what’s happening in more detail in next month’s newsletter. In my role as adult social care, it’s really important to stress that we are in the middle of a housing crisis on our island. Whilst we have granted lots of planning permissions over the years very few of those buildings have actually been forthcoming and built. Stay vacations have suddenly become popular with people from the mainland and as a result many properties which were used to accommodate families are now being converted into holiday lets. We are desperately short of family homes for local people which are affordable and with the reduced amount of rent to the housing we are seeing increasing numbers of homeless people. It is a great sadness to me that a nation such as ours, the fifth richest nation in the world, should see homelessness increasing on a scale not seen before. I encourage people with second homes to rent them out to our island people. We must find more rented affordable and adapted housing, or we will see more people living out on the streets in tents. As it seems that the weather is about to finally turn and a warm spell arrives, I wish you a pleasant, happy healthy summer.

News report from Cllr Matthew Price for Whippingham, Newport & Fairlee • 07833 537668 • 01983 524320 matthewpricewhippingham@gmail.com As I settle into the newly expanded ward, I would like to thank everyone who has been in touch. The first significant thing I have dealt with has been the planning application to build a new Fuel Depot on the Whippingham Business Park. This application is generally for domestic fuels for heating which since the depot in East Cowes closed down has been temporarily stored at Osborne which is a dreadfully inadequate site. This has led to a rise in fuel costs and also at many times a shortage of fuel. The fuel depot will be a state-of-the-art facility and will be a fully sealed site with full bunding. This will ensure that not only will the site not be at risk of any contamination but will also leave no significant contamination when the transition to greener fuels becomes more practical. I did not want to be supporting a fossil fuel facility but given the thousands of households who rely on oil for heating their homes must have this available. I have managed to secure additional evergreen planting through the planning approval via conditions which will see the site very much disguised from sight. I have taken on board the concerns from the local schools but do feel reassured that this site will not only be a fully up to date facility with all the latest technology, it will also be far better and able to comply with all the environmental regulations and Health and Safety requirements. It will also be manned 24 Hours a day and 7 days a week.
The dreadful traffic issues by the major roadworks throughout East Cowes has been a terrible concern, although they were outside of the Whippingham ward they have obviously caused endless issues for you all. I was in constant dialogue with the IOW Council and Island Roads as were the East Cowes Councillors. Although these works have now passed, and things have gone back to normal I wanted you to know that I tried to assist with speeding these works up so normal access could resume as soon as possible. Had these works been in Whippingham I would have been able to do much more. I am continuing to pursue the possibility of relocating Newport FC to Seaclose Park rather than the Racecourse site and hope to have a final decision in the next few months. I look forward to meeting with many of you over the next four years and you can reach me on the details above.

Trading Standards have a few scams to share with you this month. • First of all a reminder about the Loft insulation phone calls that have been plaguing Island residents. Do not respond to these calls and do not permit a “surveyor” to visit your property. They would, without doubt, find a problem in your loft and then charge you extortionate sums to “fix the problem” • If you are trying to renew important documents online be very careful as there are many copycat websites out there who will charge you to process the application (The DVLA charge will only be for the Driving Licence or Passport etc) it is likely you will also not receive the documents you have applied for. Always use official government websites when carrying out these transactions • Fake Amazon emails are circulating saying that you need to update your account – this is a SCAM do not click on any links • Be wary when buying items on Facebook from apparently local sellers. Reports have been received about fake accounts who will advertise items for sale, take your money and then you receive nothing. If you have paid through Paypal friends and family you will also have no recourse to a refund • Reports of rogue traders again on the Island. Do not engage with anyone who knocks on your front door and offers to do work for you – they will not be genuine and you could find a £20 job turn into a £2000 job and these traders can be intimidating and persistent. As always forward any scam emails to report@phishing.gov. uk and scam texts to 7726. Ensure that you use valid and trusted websites and that any trader you employ is reliable and trusted.
