News Report from Town & County Cllr Karl Love - East Cowes. Email: karl.love@iow.gov.uk Facebook: Cllr Karl Love As we move towards Christmas my thoughts turn to those who are less fortunate, live alone or separated from loved ones. Christmas for many can be a lonely time. The plentiful that many have is not experienced by all in our community. If you’re able to, please make a donation to our food banks so that others might feel the joy of Christmas or spend just a little time checking on vulnerable neighbours when the cold weather kicks in. 2018 has been a busy year for our towns people and it’s regeneration. We have been plagued by the floating bridge failures and seen the Trinity Buildings demolished as our town changes for ever. It seems that whatever I have to say about the bridge it is simply ignored.

once again represents a setback which comes from County Hall. It seems that all that we do is fraught by others and rules. I fear this might be the trees last Christmas so please help decorate it like never before. 2019 could turn out to be quite a special year for our town as we work towards the bicentennial births of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. We are working with the New Carnival Company to create something special for our town and A&B Events to create a town festival on Sunday 26th May.

We are also creating a Victoria and Albert Walk of History with art exhibitions with Space 5 and a Victorian Event. We would like you to get involved in the weekend Returning the use of the town car park, which 2019 events of 24th to 27th May by wearing victorian costumes in the town and helping I have been in discussion with Red Funnel to make decorations for the town. We want about for many months, will I hope, in some to make our town as bright as possible. small way help to increase the foot fall in and around the town and this will help our shops and local businesses. News Report from Town & County Cllr Karl Love continued 2019 could also see some action being taken to address some of the land slip issues as IWC finally starts to work with residents to make some improvements. However this does not include clearing the road debris but creating a woodland access across it possibly reconnecting it with Castle Point. It will take a lot of effort but finally there is some hope. I continue to support people at both county and local level in both personal and community issues. I am however sometimes overrun with mail and it can take a while for me to get back to people. There is no news yet about the proposals for Norris Castle and Crossways development. However there have been meetings held about the importance of the Picturesque landscape of Norris Castle with national organisations in attendance. The castle is one of the most important grade one listed landscapes in Britain today and as such any development planned for it will be closely scrutinised. A new Facebook group has been formed and is run by local people. Facebook: Friends of Norris Castle East Cowes Isle Of Wight. I hope this helps keep people informed. My partner and I recently visited a garden centre called Oak Tree Garden Centre in Bracknell to view a carved statue of Robert Stigwood who is the former owner of Barton Manor. Robert Stigwood was the producer of Madonna, the Bee Gees and other artists and today the Robert Stigwood foundation still operates from Barton Manor. I’m delighted to say the carved statue done by our islands own Norman Gaches is still salvageable but not in its entirety.

David and I are excited and currently trying to recover this item to be placed in our town as a tribute to the music industry and those famous people who once visited our town including, Madonna, the Bee Gees, Andrew Lloyd Webber and others. We will attempt to recover this piece of history for the town and hopefully have it placed somewhere that everyone can gaze upon it. We shall seek private donations to try and achieve this recovery. It might cost ÂŁ3500. We are very excited about this possibility and hoping that it could make a valuable contribution to our 2019 celebrations. Finally I wish you a very Happy Christmas and hope you enjoy the towns Christmas event on the 7th December in Kings Square. I also hope you enjoy the towns Christmas lights which I hope will be extended and we shall keep adding to our town display year by year.

It’s that time of year again, The Salvation Army in Newport will be holding their Christmas Day dinner. As always they will be providing a free hot meal and a pudding, to all their friends in the Community who may be homeless, elderly, or anyone who will be on their own and families who wish to join them. Organiser Kay is asking for your help - Please see below a list of the kind of things they need. Last year they served 144 dinners on Christmas Day. Alongside this they also provided 140 families with hampers. Volunteers - They will need volunteers to assist in the preparation of the vegetables on Christmas Eve. This usually takes a couple of hours with a good team of people. They will need people on Christmas Day to help get the room ready for the guests arrival (time to be confirmed). People to help serve guests during the meal and to chat and share fellowship. You may be the only person that has spoken to some of the elderly folk that come in a while. Finally help is needed to clear away. They will also need guests collected from their homes. Could anyone help collect and return guests at the end of the day? Entertainment - They would love to entertain their guests. Food - Carrots, sprouts, stuffing, pigs in blankets, parsnips, roast potatoes, gravy, turkey, peas, Christmas pudding, cream, custard, mince pies, milk, tea, coffee and Christmas cake. Drinks (non alcoholic) Pop, flavoured water, Fruit juice. Gifts - Men’s, ladies and children’s. Hampers - Tins of veg and meat, pasta, non perishables as well as fresh nearer the time. They are also looking for people to help with preparing the hampers the week leading up to Christmas. If you can help in anyway or would like to join them on the day please contact Kay via email at Kay.willett@salvationarmy.org.uk for more information. This is a monthly report from the Clerk of East Cowes Town council which will provide a roundup of what the Town council are involved in and the key decisions they are making. At the November meeting members of the public joined the Council in their concern about the reliability of the Floating Bridge and asked lots of questions around safety concerns and what budgets the IWC are taking the finances from that are being used to try to overcome the issues. Are other public services suffering because of this £6 million pound spend? There is also evidence that the IWC also seem to be giving differing answers to the same questions to members of the public. The Umbrella Tree was fully discussed and, in the light of the Town Council’s insurers being unable to provide cover for a third party against claims for injury and the prohibitive cost of building a structure to support the tree, the Town Council, very reluctantly, had to step back from this issue. It was suggested that a voluntary group try to negotiate with the IW Council to let them raise the money and take over responsibility for the tree and effect insurance cover. This suggestion will be put to the IW Council. The Town Council will be holding a public consultation at the Town Hall on Thursday, 20th December to get the views of the general public on what the Council’s priorities for spending should be over the coming year. Members of the public will be invited to consider ideas from the Town Council as well as putting their own ideas forward. This is an exciting opportunity for the electorate to really get involved in the decision-making process of the Council and they are encouraged to attend. The consultation will be open from 10 am – 9pm to allow the maximum attendance. 8

The results of the consultation will be advertised locally and posted on the Council’s website in January The Council discussed the Boundary Commission’s plans to reduce the number of IW Councillors from 40 to 39 and, as a result, change some ward boundaries, but felt that as there was no change proposed for East Cowes there was no need to comment. The Council purchased a memorial bench to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the end of WW1 and to honour those who served. A short service of commemoration was held at the Town Hall, York Avenue on Friday 9th November at 10.45 which was well attended by relatives and friends of those who had served. Town Councillors, the Chairman of the East Cowes Royal British Legion were in attendance for the wreath laying and Rev. David Plumb from the Methodist Church kindly officiated and was joined by the Vicar of St James. Names of those who had fallen were called out at what was an emotional service

It’s a Way of Life When I first took the step to embrace and learn yoga I thought that I would be throwing myself into the ‘downward facing dog’ and ‘tree’ positions, and working on ways to make me more supple, but as yet I haven’t tried these poses and I have now realised that there is so much more to yoga than I first thought. If I had to compare it to anything I would have to say ‘an onion’ ... there are many layers to it and it is very versatile. This may sound like a cliché but yoga really is about physical and mental wellbeing and for now I am working more on breathing, stretching and meditating. The type of yoga I am learning is called Satyananda and is being taught by Nickie Short and each lesson is based around what I need at that present time which is why these one to one lessons are perfect for me but I am looking forward to getting to the stage when I am ready for some ‘traditional yoga poses’. Her weekly classes include posture, breathing, meditation and chanting and although the structure of the class is similar each week, the content takes you through a journey of progression and self-awareness. Christmas Recycling Tour By Cllr Michael Murwill - Cabinet Member for Waste Management

Beautiful Decor

The IWC, in partnership with Amey, are undertaking a ‘Festive Reduce Reuse Recycle Tour’ around the Island during November and December to inform residents of what can be recycled over the Christmas period. Below are the venues during December: pop along and pick up a free recipe card and recycling booklet. They would also like your views on waste and recycling services and an online survey is now open until January 4. It is an opportunity for householders to put forward suggestions for future improvements or ideas on how the Island can recycle more. The council is responsible for the collection, treatment and disposal of household recyclables and waste on the Island — which is delivered through a contract with Amey.
