News Report from Town & County Cllr Karl Love - East Cowes. Email: karl.love@iow.gov.uk Facebook: Cllr Karl Love May I start by wishing you all a very Happy Christmas and I hope you are all looking forward to 2020. This year seems to have passed so quickly and our town has seen many big changes. I wanted to start by remembering all these who gave their lives in conflict. Our towns act of Remembrance was held at St James Church and was attended by many local people. The colouring of poppies on stones created by our young people uniformed organisations during the church service and then adding the names of our towns fallen on them was an act of personal remembrance from our young. The Poppy arch created by our Women’s Institute was visited and appreciated by many. Now to the future. Could gondolas be the long term future for East and West Cowes? Some might say they may be a better and more reliable mode of transport than our floating bridge. Clarence Road could disappear under high water and become our very own street canal? One might think I’m joking but it is in fact a very real likelihood if action is not taken to reduce global warming and address climate change now. Both East and West Cowes along with others areas of our island are already inside the flood zones. In 2050, it is predicted our town will see flooding as a regular occurrence and it will be virtually unstoppable. The East Cowes flood map prediction shows Clarence Road, Ferry Road, Castle St, Wells Road and Albany Road along with factories and businesses all flooding. There seems to be very little that we can do to address this apart from either build upwards or build sea defences. Of course 4
we could reduce carbons, plastics and clean up our acts. However it is the world collectively that must change. For our town its not just about stopping the water flowing into the town from the sea and rivers it’s about water flowing backwards up drains into low lying properties. I have raised climate change and our towns flood defences, for discussion at town council. In other news residents might like to know that a planning application has been lodged for the convention of two shops and turning them into one, in lower York Avenue. They are empty at the moment and being converted onto a restaurant/coffee shop. This application will bring the shops back into use if the application is approved. At the time of writing this, there is no news about the Crossways Development application. When it is announced I will inform you via social media. I remain optimistic that our case being presented to planning will result in significant changes to the application and hopefully prevent it being built. The Millfield Avenue housing development proposal is situated in an unassuming field off Old Road. It’s one of the most important habitats on our island. It’s ecology is very special and it includes snakes, harvest mice and at least one rare bat living in residence. It is also the hunting ground for owls, buzzards, woodpeckers and has resident foxes, badgers and red squirrels. It is literally a full house of endangered species and should not be built on under any circumstances. An attempt to have the Spring Hill estate listed has also sadly failed. The future of the Spring Hill estate continued over the page
News Report from Cllr Karl Love continued remains uncertain but I am of course keeping a close watch over it and I am very interested to hear from local residents what their thoughts and feelings are. I also want to point out that this development will be accessed from Old Road and will have a significant impact on school traffic connectivity. I’m pleased to say that the proposed cuts to gritting routes which would have affected Old Road and Beatrice Avenue have been cancelled following many complaints from across the island. I recently met with senior officers from Red Funnel to discuss future plans for their yard and the road networks. I raised a number of issues about the road traffic hold-ups, proposed new road layout and of course the plans for electronic signage. They are intending to work with Isle of Wight Council to put in place some electronic warning signs at Whippingham roundabout and in other locations. We had a frank discussion. However the marshalling yard capacity remains an issue and where do vehicles park, who are waiting to board delayed ferries away from our town streets until they are able to proceed. I would like to suggest that when the new football stadium is built at the racecourse roundabout that it be turned over as an alternative parking area for when the port becomes congested. We do need to look for solutions on an out of town car park or even check in centre for vehicles could be a solution.
I do feel positive about the future of our town and our town council is taking charge of more local amenities and is doing so to try to protect and maintain the facilities within our community. As Christmas approaches I want to thank those local organisations and volunteers who have collected and donated items so that less fortunate children and families might be able to enjoy a Christmas gift here and across the world. There are parts of our community which have suffered significantly during these times of austerity and I ask local residents, to kindly make a donation to the food bank, in whatever small way you can. I know all too well the pain of families who rely on the food bank and support of our community. We must address the causes of poverty and our local charities and churches are a key local support. I want residents to know whatever the outcome of this General Election I will continue in my resolve to support the people of our community. Abuse has Evolved You don’t need a bruise to be abused. You don’t have to hit to hurt. Abuse is no longer just physical! Just because a person doesn’t put their hands on you, that doesn’t mean they aren’t abusive. ABUSE is control, blatant disrespect and hurtful words.
It doesn’t just happen to women. Men can be victims too. Break the Cycle CIC has been running since 2016 and was founded by Maggie Currie after she realised there was a gap in the support needed by people who had suffered domestic abuse. She has worked tirelessly to obtain grant funding and donations to run the FREE Mind the Gap courses which are aimed at anyone who has suffered abuse in any form. Their regular 12 week courses are attended by local men and women and they can learn how to rebuild their It is NOT okay confidence and move forward positively in their lives on their • To be humiliated in public own terms. These FREE to attend courses have produced amazing results by those attending. They have changed the thinking of some people in such a way as they have made the decision not to commit suicide. Others have discovered they are valuable members of society after continuously being told how worthless they were and some have gone on to start their own businesses, gone back into education or, just as importantly, escaped from their abusive relationship and now live confidently on their own terms.
The next courses begin in January 2020. The women only course begins on Tuesday 7th January at 10am and the men only course begins on Thursday 9th January at 6pm. Both courses are run at The Riverside Centre, The Quay, Newport. For more information or to book your place call 01983 754666 or email hello@breakthecycle. org.uk 14

All you need is a shop brought chocolate swiss roll of any size, ready made chocolate frosting, spoon full of icing sugar and some decorations. Simply cut a small end on the diagonal off the swiss roll and position on the side and sandwich together with a small amount of frosting. Cover the remaining swiss roll with the frosting and using a fork along the length to give a log like effect. Sieve some icing sugar over the top for a snowy feel and decorate as you wish with either marzipan or plastic decorations. It’s ok to cheat at Christmas... it’s called good time management.

East Cowes Town Council - Clerks Report As the festive season approaches the Town Council is as busy as ever. In order to keep your town looking neat and tidy and following a comprehensive review of current provision of litter/dog waste bins they have been considering the location of additional bins in a few problem hot spots. Please be aware Island Roads advise that litter bins can be used to deposit dog waste where no separate bin is provided. The Town Map is nearing completion. It will be published on the website and incorporated in a town leaflet in the New Year. This will be useful to locals and visitors alike and promote all that East Cowes has to offer. Every household in the town has received a survey to complete asking if they support the Community Hub project at the Town Hall. Following previous consultations plans have been drawn up to show what this building would look like. It will provide a larger library with additional computers for public access, a meeting room for hire and community use plus accessible ground floor offices and new public toilets. If you have not already returned your survey you have until 13th December. The Town Council urges as many people as possible to complete this as it will enable them to apply for a Public Works Loan to make this project a reality. If you have mislaid it feel free to collect one from the Town Hall. 16
During this month the people of the town can enjoy the annual pantomime at the Town Hall on 14th and 15th December and the Christmas Trees provided by the Town Council. Due to the number of planning applications that need to be considered the Town Council has formed a Planning Committee. As with all council meetings these will be open to the public, look out for notices on the Parish Notice Boards. The Town Council meeting this month takes place at 7pm on Thursday 19th in the Town Hall. Agendas for the meeting can be found on the website and displayed on the noticeboards outside the Town Hall, at the Bumblebee Play area and on the new noticeboard at the Parkside Pavilion. The Town Hall will be closed from 1pm on 24th December and re-open at 8am on 2nd January. The Town Council send their best wishes to everyone for Christmas and the New Year.

One Great Island of People, Living in Many Communities Caring and Creative, Inclusive and Dynamic Striving to achieve equality of opportunity in all things and living life to the full
INSPIRATIONAL FUTURES
Our Island is steeped in history, has a workforce and community spirit to be proud of and its location inspires innovation and creativity I Believe that Island people deserve to be listened to and have their issues and concerns strongly represented at the highest levels of Government. By putting Island People First and at the centre of democracy. I will be voting for what best fits the needs of our Island People, in a way that is transparent, inclusive and community focused.
Our Health and Well-Being comes first
above all else and we must support our local NHS, and health workers in finding new ways in addressing the shortfalls of staff and funding. We must invest if we are all to live a good and long life. I will continue to fight for better funding with improved Health and Mental Healthy Services.
I Will Inspire Island Residents, encourage community development, raise peoples spirits and help improve our Island’s Profile. Our people are innovative and creative. I will seek to promote all that is good about our Island. The World We Live In Is The Source Of All That We Are And Hope To Be.
The Isle of Wight and United Kingdom is well placed with its innovation technologies and can make a significant contribution in supporting the reductions of pollutants. There are financial and employment rewards for our businesses in creating environmental innovations. Our Island is in a great position to test new technologies and green innovations. We must take climate change seriously.
ple when peo s en p p ha ly on , Change te, are engaged get involved, voer to demand it. and join togeth I would want to see a small Island visitor tax introduced to fund Cross-Solent Patient Transport and environmental projects. We need to assertively address safety concerns, have more police on the streets and respond quicker to criminal activity. Restorative justice needs to reflect the wishes of victims better. Environmental Health requires improved enforcement powers. Our Cross-Solent ferry operators need a centralised, co-ordinated out of town vehicle check-in. We cannot block Yarmouth, Fishbourne or East Cowes highways. We need to raise education attainment standards across the board, in Schools Higher Education and within existing workforce populations. This requires diversity of learning. We do need a fixed link feasibility study. The outcome of which must be put to our Island people in a referendum. Our people will decide what kind of Island they choose to live on in the future. Our Island is well placed for green innovation and testing technologies. We cannot keep building houses without providing services, jobs or infrastructure.
