Community Spirited Care Agency
About our Care Agency
We are the only private care agency based here in East Cowes and have been established since 2007. We do our own assessment of your needs and set up a care plan that suits and meets your requirements. Our hourly rates are the best and we look after our carers well. We are registered and regulated with CQC and hold a GOOD rating.
If you are interested in what we do in the community and are looking for work, you drive and have the use of a car then please visit our website and tell us why you feel you would be an asset to our lovely team of carers. Alternate weekends and a share of evenings are essential for us. Everything we do is community based and we offer something different. We go into care homes and deliver activities in a group and also take residents out in the community. Our work is not just personal care, we have built our business on social activities in our community. Feel free to come and join our Social Interaction Groups and if you are interested in volunteering, please get in touch.
Come and join our Knit, Natter and Craft Group and enjoy a giggle and cuppa every Wednesday.
Come and join in with other like minded people in our fun and friendly Older Persons Youth Club every Thursday. Meet new people and you can also enjoy a bacon sandwich for just £1.
All groups are held at the Parkside Pavilion, Vectis Road, East Cowes from 10.30am - 12.30pm and the price is just £2 per person per group.
Do you know anyone who is isolated and would benefit from having a craft bag from us? We want people to have a purpose and by linking in with our community group we hope that, eventually they will come along to our groups in East Cowes. We also have 5 children’s bags... maybe you know a child in hospital or being home schooled? We just need their home details. We are reaching out to make our community more connected.
Special thanks to
for supporting our community project

Welcome to the February issue which arrives with a big sigh of relief that we made it through January; the month that goes on and on and on, which wasn’t helped with all the rain and wind that we’ve experienced recently. On a positive note you will notice that the evenings are slowly getting lighter which means that Spring will be with us shortly.

News Report from Town & County Cllr Karl Love - East Cowes. Email: karl.love@iow.gov.uk Facebook: Cllr Karl Love January has certainly been a very wet and windy month but warmer than I first thought it would be. Due to some family health issues I missed the last Isle of Wight and local Town Council meetings because I had to go off island at short notice. Have your say on the Islands future housing needs by taking part in an online survey. It is important to share with you the Isle of Wight Draft Housing Strategy 2020-2025 before the final strategy is presented to Cabinet for adoption in March with relevant amendments made. Go to www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/ IWHousingNeeds2020. A key question I keep asking people is about what kind of Island do you want to live on and what that consists of? We do need more affordable housing built and improved rented accommodation. It seems to me that there has been a free for all cavalier approach to property development where some developers are speculating purchasing land which increases land values but then sit on that land banking its increased value. I continue in my belief that we should not be developing housing on green open countryside and landscapes. We should be developing existing brownfield land and not allowing greenfield to be converted to brownfield. We need to bring back into operation more empty properties. This survey is an opportunity for you to see what you think and provide your ideas about what might make our island community a better place to live and work. In January I attended the Volunteer Fair at the Riverside Centre and it was great to see so many local charities and organisations represented. I was pleased
to see how many people from East Cowes and Whippingham were attending the event both in an organisation capacity and many wanting to volunteer. East Cowes is well known for its community participation and in this coming year we shall be having some high-profile community events including celebrating VE Day co-ordinated by Cllr Michael Paler. More information will follow about these events nearer to the time. East Cowes and the Medina Valley have great potential for economic and community growth in both the marine, shipbuilding and composites sectors, tourism and Town Regeneration. There is a great deal going on locally in the background. We have the East Cowes Regeneration Group, East Cowes Community Partnership, East Cowes Arts and Culture group, Churches together, Friends of East Cowes, Norris Castle, Frank James, East Cowes Sailing Club, Harbour Commission, Older Voices and so many more community groups. I attend as many of these meetings as I possibly can but of course not all. It is so important for me to keep informed about all these groups and developments. East Cowes is changing and as part of my work I am always seeking to speak with our community and stakeholders to understand your expectations and ambitions for our town and economic growth. You can always contact me at lovehilluk@gmail.com if you would like me to attend one of your meetings. The number of emails and messages which I receive has grown and sometimes it can take me a little while to respond. At county council I attend as many meetings as I possibly can and even continued over the page
News Report from Town & County Cllr Karl Love - East Cowes. Email: karl.love@iow.gov.uk Facebook: Cllr Karl Love those for which I am not elected to or able to vote on. I currently sit on the young people’s committee and corporate scrutiny. There is always something happening at local and county of significant importance to our community. The Floating Bridge continues to be the temperamental vessel. The staff do not have magical wands and they are constrained by the vessels performance itself. I am still waiting to be told by the Isle of Wight Council what solutions they have for fixing the channels and the removal of the push badge. The floating bridge user group continues to be a closed group to the general public. I do not attend this meeting and feel that it has little relevance as we can see no real progress at all after its formation in 2018. In the absence of transparency by IWC and the lack of mechanical adjustments, fixes and progress I maintain it is not fit for purposes and should be replaced. It is clear to me that the bottom line in this painful and embarrassing saga is money and the fear of IWC spending it and losing face in ordering a replacement vessel. There are whispers that IWC have found solutions, but they clearly don’t want to share them with us. I will continue to press for answers thank the staff of the floating bridge for their efforts.
proposals for Norris Castle and Crossways developments. I’ve been asked by several people about the renovation work at the former Frank James Hospital. I am listening and following the work and issues people raise with me about the Frank James buildings. Work does seem to have ground to a halt, and I have been in discussions about it. I also have no news yet about the plans for the former Studio school site. I will keep you informed of any progress I hear about any of the above issues. Finally, I wanted to say thank you to Island Magazines for the support they have shown me over the years I’ve been in office. It is vital that we have effective methods of communicating both online and in hard copy publications which are accessible to all. I do try to keep our community informed as much as possible and Island Magazines provides a wonderful opportunity to engage with our local people. Thank you to Debbie for providing this magazine which is an essential part of our community.

Café Bridge Coming Soon The Isle of Wight will soon be playing host to its very first Café Bridge, and organiser Philip Watson is excited to be bringing this event to Yarmouth. The invitation is open to all standards of bridge players and he hopes players from across the Island will support the event and help raise some much needed funds for The Mountbatten Hospice. What is Café Bridge? This daytime event involves playing bridge with pre-dealt hands in Yarmouth’s finest licensed establishments. Walk to the next pub with your partner after each round, guided by a roadbook and map given to you at registration. Soup and sandwiches are provided wherever you land up at lunchtime. Café Bridge started in Holland, and is now widespread in the UK. It combines playing bridge in social surroundings with walking around a pleasant British town – all while raising money for a good cause and giving bridge some needed publicity.

Preparing Your Will A professionally prepared Will is essential. It’s a shocking statistic that around 31 million adults in the UK have failed to prepare a will. The technical term for passing away with no valid will is ‘dying intestate’. If this happens, your money, possessions and property will be divided up according to the law, and your loved ones could stand to inherit nothing. For instance, if you are unmarried and die ‘intestate’, your partner would by law receive nothing. If you have children, this can complicate things further, as the law often places them above your partner in the order of entitlement – and if you have children from a previous marriage they Making or updating your Will? could be completely passed by.

If yourself or a loved one is facing the possibility of losing mental capacity, or are worried about finding it difficult in the future to manage their property and financial affairs, it is critical you get a Lasting Power of Attorney. Without an LPA, your finances and assets could be handed over to an external deputy to manage, which can be difficult for the family and very expensive. An LPA will ensure that someone you know and trust will be in charge of your finances and assets, and leave you and your family with peace of mind.

Help from One Island to Another. Since hearing about the news of the raging fires in Australia and having family out there herself, local resident, Amber Taylor-Wilcox is asking anyone who can knit, sew or crochet to help her make pouches, wraps, nests and blankets to be used by rescue centres in the rehabilitation and rescuing of native animals. She is working closely with the Animal Rescue Craft Guild and below are details of just some of the items needed. Crochet birds nests - A variety of sizes are needed (from 3-12 inches in diameter). Recommended to use acrylic or wool in 8 ply or DK. No yarns that are ‘fluffy’ like mohair. With the walls up, it’s a nest for birds or a flat bottomed pouch for an animal. Pouch sizes needed - 10cm x 15cm; 15cm x 20cm; 25cm x 35cm; 35cm x 40cm and 50cm x 65cm. Closed on the two longer sides and one end, and left open at the top. Knitted Outer Pouches:- Material: 8 ply or DK wool (they are unable to use pouches made from synthetic materials as the joeys cannot breathe in closed synthetic. pouches). Fabric Outer Pouches:- Cotton, flannelette, polar fleece, wool, jersey, sweatshirt material, etc. Poly blends and synthetics are OK. French seams are not needed for outer pouches. All Inner Pouches:- 100% natural fibre only (cotton, bamboo, linen, silk). Flannelette or plain cotton are great as well as stretchy t-shirt cotton. Fabric should be very soft (what you would give to a baby). French seams are a must for all joey pouch liners. The lining should not be attached to the pouch as it will need to be changed regularly. Onward shipping has been arranged to the ARCG and Ambers family will also deliver to local hubs for distribution across Australia. You can drop your items at any of the following collection points, IOW Zoo, Sandown; Lanesend Primary School, Cowes; Vic Tavern, East Cowes; Dog Grooming Centre and Monkey Haven, Newport; 4c Oakvale, Oakfield, Ryde; Tapnell Park Farm, West Wight. 8

Bereavement is the period of grief and mourning after a death. Grief is as unique as you are, and as individual as a fingerprint. Each person will be affected in his or her own way because everyone is different – even in the same family. Butterflies Bereavement Support is a community-based bereavement charity and was set up 3 years ago to meet the growing demand of supporting the emotional and physical needs of those aged 16 plus who have experienced the loss of a loved one or a friend through death. Butterflies is inclusive, everyone is welcome. They are not a religious organisation or connected to any other charity. They are here for bereaved families and individuals who need care and support following the passing of someone special in their lives. Butterflies Bereavement Support is made up of volunteers who have experienced their own loss, and each of them have received varying levels of training and continue to be trained in all aspects of bereavement. It is the invaluable support of a growing team of dedicated people locally who are giving their own time, skills and talents to be there to listen, counsel and support throughout the year. They offer accessible Counselling Sessions, drop in and chats, evening bereavement support groups, bereavement cafe’s, Suicide Prevention and Support, Dementia and Bereavement Support, Pre-Bereavement Support and activities to alleviate loneliness. Bereaved people, even those who have witnessed the peaceful death of a loved one, often need to tell their story repeatedly, and at that important part of transferring the experience they endured into a memory, instead of reliving it like a parallel reality every time they think about it – they are here to encourage open discussion with all people. Butterflies is transforming the lives of many – and many more will be transformed in the future. Butterflies Bereavement Support are looking for volunteers to become Bereavement Buddies. Their bereavement buddies have the chance to become trained listeners and achieve Level 2 counselling skills and then further development and training opportunities. They also are looking for welcomer’s, team leaders and people who can help with admin and fundraising. If you or indeed you know of someone who would benefit from support call them on 07889009393 or 01983 619503. If you are interested in volunteering email Paul at info@butterfliesbereavement.co.uk or for more information about Butterflies Bereavement Support visit their website www.butterfliesbereavement.com 16

“Our Space” is a variant of the immensely successful drop-in “Our Place” already operating in Freshwater, and it is hoped that the East Cowes drop-in will both learn from the experiences of the Freshwater team and achieve a comparable degree of success. If the project takes off, the co-ordinators at East Cowes would like to see it grow to a weekly rather than monthly resource for the whole community.

Rev Susan Paterson, one of the leading co-ordinators at East Cowes, said, “We were so inspired by the way the churches in West Wight had responded to the needs of their community and made such a wonderful resource available in Freshwater that as members of the local Churches Together group here we wanted to see if we could replicate their excellent work. There is a crying need for services which otherwise people might have to travel into Newport or Cowes to find, and if we can help in any way we see it as a privilege to be involved.” Our Space in East Cowes operates from 12.00-2.00pm on the second Thursday of the month. For further details or to book a stand contact Rev Susan Paterson (Email: revspaterson@gmail.com) or speak to any local church leader. 17

The name comes from the old word ‘shriving’, which means to listen to someone’s sins and forgive them. In Anglo-Saxon England, Christians would go to church on Shrove Tuesday to confess their sins and clean their soul. In other words, they would be ‘shriven’ In the UK, Ireland, Australia and Canada, Shrove Tuesday is also known as Pancake Day! Traditionally during Lent, tasty foods such as butter, eggs, sugar and fat would be given up. Shrove Tuesday was the last chance to eat them – and what better way to do so than with a delicious pancake! Today, we continue to whisk up these treats - but nowadays we add all kinds of tasty toppings, too, such as fruit, honey, chocolate and ice cream. Pancake races are a super-fun Shrove Tuesday tradition. In this mad-cap activity, people race each other whilst tossing a pancake in a pan. The story goes that it originated way back in 1445, in the town of Olney in Buckinghamshire, England. A woman was so busy making pancakes that she lost track of time. When she heard the church bells ringing for the Shrove Tuesday mass, she ran as fast as she could to make it, and arrived still carrying her pancake in the pan! On this day, a whopping 52 million eggs are used in the UK alone! That’s 16 million more than the average day. 18
