Town Mayor Report for East Cowes From Margaret Webster

(Tel No: 01983 299082 and leave a message for the Mayor)

Town Mayor Report

As you read this report we will be entering 2017, another year with plenty of decisions to be taken. May I wish you all a Happy and Healthy 2017. This month has been another busy month. On Saturday 3rd December, as advertised, the Town Council held their Charity Christmas Bazaar, we had 23 tables of varying choices of wares all supporting local charities. It was enjoyed by all and I believe proved profitable for the various organisations. Thank you for your support. In the evening we completed the day with a Christmas Extravaganza Show, promoted by the Supporters of The Amy White Theatre, all the artists gave their time voluntarily. It was good to watch the variety of talents and to hear you all singing along with Christmas carols. We even celebrated a birthday amongst us. Thank you to all the artists for their time and effort, it is very much appreciated, Thank you to Cllr Bob Hooper who organised the evening event. We managed to raise £370 which is to be divided between the IOW Association for Spina Bifida & Hydrocephalus and the Heart Care Club, both these organisations support many people in East Cowes. During the same day, the East Cowes Business Association held an inter-shop Quiz. At 3 o’clock, the committee brought the correct entrant papers to the Town hall and I drew three winning forms out. Again thank you all who supported the Small businesses day in East Cowes. 4

The Town councils Christmas tree has been installed at the Town Hall as decided after last years’ problems. The business Association have also had a tree put up outside Seabreeze cafe, they both look very regal and the Town looks great. On Friday 8th December 2016, I was invited to Parkside to a luncheon being organised for the older community in East Cowes. Georgie Woodburn organised the event, all those that attended agreed that the meal was superb, thank you Georgie, it was much appreciated by all those who attended. During the lunch we were accompanied by live music making it a pleasing occasion. Thank you to Jane and her crew as well, she has made a difference at Parkside with her hard work, can I suggest perhaps you call in and see what the Parkside has to offer the community, it certainly has a varied programme of events and Jane and her staff can assist and advise in all circumstances, if not I am assured she will get someone who can. The Floating Bridge is to be shortly out of action for approx. 3 months whilst the slipway is resigned in readiness for the new three lane bridge being introduced. Foot passengers will travel across to Cowes or return to East Cowes by a passenger boat as is usual when the bridge is out of operation. Red Funnel has also informed us that they will be carrying out link span repairs from the beginning of December and over Christmas between crossings, hopefully completed by the time you read this magazine. This is essential repair work and I understand they

Town Mayor Report for East Cowes have informed all businesses and homes within the vicinity. They hope to keep disruption to a minimum. Some of the litter strewn across Maresfield Road has been cleared but there is still rubbish dumped on the road. This has been brought to Island Roads attention with a request that it is sorted along with dumped unlicensed vehicles. We respectfully ask residents to take any rubbish home or put in the bins provided and recognise that vehicles parked illegally will be dealt with as per the law. Thank You. I wish you all an enjoyable and safe New Year.

Resolutions…. It’s that time of the year again, when we say goodbye to one year and welcome in another. It’s traditional to make yearly resolutions, which normally get broken before the last of the Turkey is used up and bubble and squeak is on the menu for the fourth day running. We can thank the Babylonians for this tradition as it is believed they were the first to make New Year’s resolutions and the early Christians believed the first day of the new year should be spent reflecting on past mistakes and resolving to improve oneself in the new year. My resolutions are pretty much the same year after year and the reason being is because I break them year after year. They are standard resolutions and include at least four maybe five from the list of top ten resolutions, which are lose weight, eat more healthily, exercise more, be more patient, stick to a budget, stop smoking, save money, get more organised, find a better job and to just be a better person over all. It’s good to know I am not alone in my thinking and planning and failing!!!!! Traditions go back a long way and each country has its different beliefs – take Italy for example… apparently Italians wear red underwear on New Year’s Day to bring good luck all year long. I do hope they wear clothes on top otherwise that will certainly be a sight for sore eyes. Back in ancient times it was believed that noisemaking and fireworks on New Year’s eve were thought to dispel evil spirits and bring 6

good luck for the forthcoming year. I’m not convinced with this but one tradition that really makes my mind boggle is that in some countries it’s good luck to eat foods like black eyed peas, ham and cabbage because it is thought they bring prosperity. If you want to have a Happy New Year, don’t eat lobster or chicken. Lobsters can move backward and chickens can scratch in reverse, so it is thought these foods could bring a reversal of fortune. Just to be safe I think I might just have a sandwich for lunch on New Year’s Day now. If you want a good New Year tip then I suggest you make sure your car is securely locked as statistics from the National Insurance Crime Bureau revealed that more vehicles are stolen on New Year’s Day than any other holiday. Does anybody know why this would be because I certainly can’t understand it? Another tradition in Colombia, Cuba and Puerto Rico is that some families stuff a large doll, which is called Mr. Old Year, with memories from the past year. They also dress him in clothes from the outgoing year. At midnight, he is set ablaze, thus burning away the bad memories. I would imagine this could be quite satisfying and a cleansing routine, to forget the past and move on to a bright future. Now where did I put that doll which I can dress in that ghastly knitted jumper I got for Christmas… Whatever your traditions are I hope you have fun doing them and good luck with your resolutions I hope you at least last until the end of January and I wish you all a Happy and Peaceful New Year. Debbie

East Cowes Business Association The New Year is here and with it, the chance to start afresh, whether this means getting fit, volunteering or just trying something new. Who knows, perhaps you’re a local business person and would like to join ECBA! We’re really keen to expand our membership and would love to hear from you, especially if you’re a tradesperson or professional service. The last year has been a busy, if not challenging year for many people and businesses, and despite the constant cut backs, High Street closures and struggling economy, East Cowes continues to buck the trend and has seen more shops opening than closing, and has experienced continued redevelopment works, and ECBA has seen a steady rise in the number of members (now standing at 47). We’re confident that with a little enthusiasm and ‘let’s make it happen’ attitude, 2017 will be another great year for our town. Looking back over 2016, ECBA has focused on getting people into the town centre to use the various shops on offer; we’ve been responsible for the start of the annual Pancake Races, St George’s Day celebration, we’ve provided swing boats for the Victorian Stroller event in August, had a Christmas prize drawer of £200 of vouchers that had to be spent with our members, and had installed a second Christmas tree (the tree in York Square was thanks in particular to Angie of Valu-4-U and Tracy of Flix who spent many hours getting it all arranged and in place for you to enjoy – thanks also to the Town Council for agreeing to insure it). We’ve worked continuously with other local groups and have also been (partly!) 12

responsible for the infamous Arch, which continues to have a love/hate relationship, as well as additional signage, including map boards, throughout the town. Looking forward to this year, you can expect bigger and better events, including: Pancake Races (Shrove Tuesday, 28th February) which is being sponsored by Turner-Brooks Recruitment. We’re really pleased that the feedback from last year’s event was so positive and are delighted to announce that this will be returning – can Holy Cross defend the shield from Queensgate? Although it is primarily aimed at children, the fact that so many parents, grandparents and friends cheered on in Kings Square made this a really fun event, despite the torrential downpour right at the end. We’ve made a few changes to the format, but the fundamental aim of having fun remains integral to the races, so please come along (and grown-ups, bring your running shoes!) Our AGM has been set for the evening of the 7th March 2017, and we invite all business people (members and non-members) to join us. We’re currently shortlisting a couple of venues, but please put the date in your diary. There is no commitment from you required and no pressure to join the committee. Another big event returning to the town is St George’s Day (although, technically this will be a day early this year). We plan to have more games and competitions taking place, including the swing boats and coconut shy, and all provided once more for free. We will be bringing this back to Kings Square on Saturday April 22nd

Coronation Turkey If you have any turkey left over from Christmas and want a quick and easy recipe then this coronation turkey is just the job. It’s a nice break away from rich food but it certainly doesn’t lose any of its taste. This is perfect as a salad, in pitta bread or pimp your packed lunch as this will certainly be the tastiest sandwich filling you’ll have. All you needs is:4 tablespoons Hellmann’s Mayonnaise 2 teaspoons mild curry powder 60ml fat free natural yogurt Lemon juice, to taste 2 tablespoons mango chutney 500g leftover turkey from a roast, or turkey breast, cooked and chopped 30g red onion, finely sliced Flaked almonds, toasted (optional) Handful of dried sultanas (optional) All you need to do is:- 1. Mix together the Hellmann’s Mayonnaise, curry powder, natural yogurt, lemon juice and mango chutney. 2. Add the chopped turkey and sliced red onion. 3. Mix well and sprinkle with toasted almond flakes and sultanas (optional)

Christmas Pudding or Mince Pie Ice Cream Here is another quick and easy recipe and can be made with Christmas pudding or mince pies or why not push the boat out and use both. There is no cooking with this just a bit of mixing. Take a tub of vanilla Ice cream out the freezer and allow to soften (not completely thawed, but soft enough to stir through). Break up the mince pies or Christmas pudding into bite-size pieces, then stir through the ice cream. Put back in the freezer and everytime you pop to the kitchen delve in and have a kingsize scoop.

Councillor Luisa Hillard – County Councillor for East Cowes. Phone/ text: 07964 869341 or email luisa.hillard@iow.gov.uk Happy New Year! What an eventful year we’ve had in East Cowes and, as you may remember from last month’s report, it was a tough one. I’m hoping that this year will be more positive, particularly regarding progress on planning matters.

Dog mess continues to be an issue across the Island and country, so please report any offenders (name not needed, but location, days and times) to either myself or the Town Clerk so that the Environment Officer can target problem areas.

My main hopes for this coming year are:

Also, please remember that if you report dog fouling to Island Roads they are obligated to clean it up within two hours.

* Highway improvements on Old Road to increase safety for pedestrians and drivers. * The construction of the new marina and hotel in East Cowes. * The installation of the new outdoor gym on Victoria Recreation Ground. * The restoration of the Frank James Hospital. * Finalisation of the parking strategy to deal with on-street and long-stay issues. * An increase in the availability of nursery/ pre-school child care places. * That the government might recognise the social and economic challenges of living on an island and provide sufficient funding (unlikely but I can still hope!). I am sure that we will all be relieved when the Regeneration is finally complete after so many years of demolition and rebuilding. There are just the final two steps to achieve and we will see progress with the marina and most likely a Red Funnel move over the coming months. I shall continue to push for community benefit where possible and support those planning applications which I believe will be of benefit to the local economy and residents. 18

Parking is an on-going issue and I continue to lobby the Council for a replacement long stay car park as part of the imminent parking strategy. Meanwhile I have been adamant that on-street parking charges must not be introduced on Castle Street, Maresfield Road and surrounding areas, as I believe this will only penalise local residents. The Floating Bridge ends its years of long service early this month and work will begin to rebuild the slipways, ready for the new arrival in March. Meanwhile the usual replacement boat will be in service for foot passengers but cars will have to drive around via Newport for a few months. I am sure that the improvements will be worth it. At the time of writing this I am still awaiting a reply from our MP about what he can do to try and secure the future of the Columbine Building at Venture Quays that was recently refused listing. Although the building is not currently at risk there is a will to protect it for future generations as a marine engineering employment space. If you have an issue, report it. If I don’t know about it I can’t try and fix it.
