As long as it receives 50% or more community support, the Isle of Wight Council will adopt it into the Island Plan and use it to determine planning applications in our area. It will involve close working with the community and key stakeholders. So, watch this space for more news.

Keep Warm and Keep Well This Winter The next couple of months the weather is likely to turn cold and this is the time to look after yourself, your family, elderly neighbours and friends. The cold weather can make some health problems worse and even lead to serious complications especially in those 65 or older, or anyone who has a long-term health condition. One of the biggest problems for many, especially those living on their own, is not staying warm enough in their homes. When temperatures fall below 8C, older adults can have an increased risk of heart attack, stroke, flu, pneumonia, and in serious cases of low temperatures – hypothermia. Older adults can quickly lose body heat and aren’t always aware of their temperature, making it easy for them to become too cold, too quickly. Body temperature below 35C (normal temperature is 37C) can cause hypothermia. Hypothermia is particularly dangerous for those living alone as there’s not someone around to notice the signs.

Later signs of hypothermia: Early signs of hypothermia: • Slow or jerky movements including • Cold hands and feet trouble walking and clumsiness • Puffy or swollen face • Slow heartbeat • Pale skin • Slow, shallow breathing • Slow or slurred speech • Loss of consciousness • Lethargic • Anger or confusion If you notice signs of hypothermia, call 999 and seek immediate medical attention. Check on older neighbours and relatives, and those with heart or breathing (respiratory) problems, to make sure they: • are safe and well • are warm enough, especially at night • have stocks of food and medicines so they do not need to go out during very cold weather Here are a few tips to keep you and your family warm and well this winter:• keep your bedroom at 18C all night if you can – and keep the bedroom window closed • use a hot water bottle or electric blanket to keep warm in bed – but do not use both at the same time • have at least 1 hot meal a day – eating regularly helps keep you warm • have hot drinks regularly • draw curtains at dusk and keep doors closed to block out draughts • get your heating system checked regularly by a qualified professional • wrap up warm and wear thick socks indoors.

News Report from Town & County Cllr Karl Love - East Cowes. Email: karl.love@iow.gov.uk Facebook: Cllr Karl Love Our Town looked amazing this Christmas Paler and there will be more with its fantastic Christmas trees and information in the next edition umbrella tree lit up. A beautiful blanket of this magazine. was wrapped around the umbrella tree knitted by Lin Kemp and the town bunting I want to give a shout out for our small created by Judy Powell. Residents have businesses and shops in East Cowes. made a special effort by contributing in January is always a quiet trading month. their own home decorations. Please shop local wherever possible. Congratulations to The East Cowes Business Association for creating a town Christmas market . It was a huge success where the town was vibrant and busy. Thank you to everyone involved. We enjoyed our singing Estate Agents from ‘Coast to Castle’. I won’t quite see them in the same light again wow… they really sang well. You will now be aware that a council meeting took place regarding the development proposals of Norris Castle and Spring Hill. I continue to have reservations and concerns about the proposal being presented for the development of the sites. I anticipate a planning application to be presented to Isle of Wight Council for the Norris Castle Estate in the near future. I will keep you informed of any progress. The Hovercraft propeller gifted to our towns people from the hovercraft Museum at Lee-on-Solent is now having a location identified for its relocation. It will make a fitting monument to our town. We do hope to complete this work and arrange a community event for its opening during this summer. I will keep you posted on how things are developing. Next Spring we will also be celebrating and remembering, through a town. We shall have a Grand Procession for VE Day. This project is being led by Cllr Michael

The Romanov monument has inspired a London based historian to write a book about our town and island and its connections with the Imperial Royal Family of Russia. The book is to be printed on the island and it is hoped that an exhibition will take place alongside the book launch in our town next summer. I want to say a huge thank you to all of you who voted for me in this General Election. I truly feel very humbled by your comments and support. It has been a tough campaign and hope that I have represented our community well and raised many issues of concern. I wanted to thank all those who gave me advice and campaigned for me and especially to my David for his support. I really have enjoyed the process of campaigning and being able to express my progressive politics. I do hope in some small way that I have made a difference to our island people and that some of my ideas can be carried forward to help create a better way of life or our own people. I stood in this general election on the ticket of Putting People First and that is what I have tried to do throughout the campaign. I’m not one to give in at the first hurdle as many of you know. I will humbly continue in my role as County continued over the page

News Report from Cllr Karl Love Councillor to do my very best for our Island and the people of East Cowes in my determination in placing our historic town on the map.

JONES

TAXI SERVICE 07970 778 053

I am and remain concerned about the budget of Isle of Wight Council for 20/21. Our island has to find £4.5 million and this will not be easy because virtually all our services are now cut to the bone. We do need an Island Deal urgently and I’m happy to receive any suggestions that you can come up with which help to generate funds for our council without impacting negatively upon Island people. I have suggested an island visitor toll set at £1 on all cars crossing from the mainland on the return journey, 50p on foot passengers also crossing from the mainland and £2 on commercial vehicles. This will help to fund a free cross-solent patient transport scheme and provide some funding to address green community Initiatives to try and offset carbon emissions and facilitate projects which address the climate emergency. New cycleways, pedestrian precincts and greener town developments along with planting more trees and growing your own veg etc. I would prefer this money not to go directly to Isle of Wight Council because it would be eaten up in addressing funding shortfalls.

28 28 22

Finally hope that 2020 will bring you great happiness and prosperity as we move forwards into a new year.
