Helping A Feathered Friend in Need. What do I do now? or Who do I call? Are the questions in the forefront of anyone’s mind if they have come across an injured bird, whether it be the common garden sparrow or one of the Queens protected swans. The first call should be to Wild Bird Aid which is a local ‘not for profit organisation’ run by Kerstin Voigt and Claire Newsome. Wild Bird Aid specialise in the rescue, rehabilitation and release of native birds. Claire specialises in all native bird species with emphasis on seabirds, pigeons and doves and Kerstin specialises in corvids (ravens, carrion crows, rooks, jays, magpies, jackdaws), birds of prey as well as swallows, martins, nightjars and swifts and all native birds. They will both endeavour to help all bird species, but at the moment they are unable to provide long time care for any birds not listed and will therefore need to get in touch with other rescues on the Island or mainland. Wild Bird Aid at present are caring for approximately 70 birds and everyday they are faced with problems of running an organisation that is so widely used by the local community. The areas in which they really need help is with volunteers to cover a variety of duties but particularly people to help with the transportation of injured birds and ideally they would like to have volunteers in all areas on the Island, so if an injured bird is found, the volunteer can be called upon to collect the bird and bring it to Wild Bird Aid which is based at a private home in Wootton Bridge for assessment and care. Volunteers are also needed to take care of animals in their own home e.g to rear orphaned small song birds, as Wild Bird Aid cannot accommodate all of these at their premises. Training will be provided if needed. They also require volunteers to help with feeding and cleaning and as you can imagine the running costs are very high and they are always happy to receive financial donations or if you have an Amazon account please take a look at the Wild Bird Aid wish list. Fund-raising plays an important role and they are looking for anyone who would like to come aboard to organise fundraising events to help raise the much needed funds. Some birds which are brought to them will obviously need more in depth medical treatment and on many occasion huge vets bills are accumulated, one such case recently was the swan that had swallowed a fishing hook and therefore vets bills, call out charges, x-rays and procedures were incurred and these can run into hundreds of pounds. Kerstin and Claire are passionate about what they do and desperately need your help. For more information please go to their website www.wild-bird-aid.uk and check out the Wild Bird Aid Wish List on Amazon or you can call Claire on 07874 660863 and Kerstin on 07935 487306. 3

Town Mayor Report for East Cowes From Margaret Webster
(Tel No: 01983 299082 and leave a message for the Mayor) As I write this report we have just experienced another Music Festival. May I thank you all for your patience and understanding, and thank you also to all those who helped to keep our Town clean and presentable. Although I believe that there were not so many revellers present this year, I personally feel that finally the event ran more smoothly with little disruption to the residents on the Island. The final evening was very enjoyable just a shame that some got a little wet, but I am assured that it is all part of the fun, and I must agree it was enjoyable.
approved, they will be held on the third Thursday each month except in December when it will be the second Thursday of the month. The Town Council meeting then continued as the Annual meeting closed.
Our Town is now beginning to look attractive with all our planting being put into place. By mid- July we will be looking exceptional. Many thanks to Care in the Garden who work tirelessly to make us special. I have been told that East Cowes has been entered into the IW in Bloom competition, so we keep our fingers crossed for our team of hard workers success.
Concerns have been raised as the criteria for a donation from the Town Council, originally requested in January, have still not been met. Councillors’ questioned the value to East Cowes for the £1500 expenditure, as the proposals refer only to Cowes. The Town Councillors were advised that a constitution was reportedly being drafted but a copy had not yet been received.
The Town Council formally approved the installation of the MUGA (Multi Use Games Area and outdoor Gym equipment to be placed in the Victoria Recreation ground next to the Skate Park, funded by S106 monies. The town council accepted all future responsibilities for it on installation.
At the Annual meeting of the Town Council, I had the honour of being elected Mayor for The Councillors unanimously agreed that any further action is deferred and the matter my second year term. Cllr Peter Lloyd was will be placed on the June agenda for a final elected my Deputy. I know that Peter is as passionate about East Cowes as I am and that decision. we both wish to see this Town go forward and develop into the Town we want our children The Council has received a request for the Bus and grandchildren to settle and thrive in. We Shelter charity to attend a Council meeting, has been agreed for the June meeting. will both do our best for the Town. Committee Members were elected, although most remained the same, these positions are displayed on the East Cowes website along with the Outside Body representatives.
All Councillors were given a copy of the Parking Strategy Consultation, they have been asked to come with any comments to the next meeting.
Meeting dates for the coming year were

The Town Council agreed to write to the IW Council registering their concerns of the safety issues along the Landslip Area. We have been advised that it is to be cordoned off and that the woodland area is regularly inspected but nothing can be done practically due to restraints in the IW Council. On Friday 10th June 2016, I was invited to Queensgate Foundation School to the school assembly where the children held a celebratory assembly in honour of the Queens 90th Birthday. It was a truly moving meeting, the children who weren’t taking part sat enthralled by the history that they were being told and photos watched on screen.

Frack Free Isle of Wight Update By Sylvia May Many of you will have heard the disappointing news that North Yorkshire County Council granted planning permission for Third Energy to frack their existing well at Kirby Misperton, despite the council receiving over 4,000 objections to the application and only 36 (less than 1%) in favour. For more details on this visit www. frackfreeryedale.org The application was, no doubt, helped by the fact that this well was already in place having been previously drilled as a conventional well, just like here in Arreton. A fact which cannot be emphasised enough to anyone who is reassured by a company stating they are only planning conventional drilling. UKOG, who has been awarded the Isle of Wight licence, have gone to great lengths to portray themselves as being interested only in conventional processes; however this could prove to be a red herring. Many people believe ‘conventional drilling isn’t as bad as fracking’. But this is simply not the case. Frack Free Isle of Wight is determined to ensure that the public is informed of the real facts about oil and gas extraction. Find out more by joining us at our public meeting on, Tuesday 19th July, at The Wilberforce Hall, Main Road, Brighstone, PO30 4AH. (Car Parking in Warnes Lane). Doors open 6.30pm ready for presentation at 7pm followed by Q & A’s. Friendly & informal, refreshments available, all welcome. 16

Offering a range of take away options, including freshly filled baguettes, sandwiches and rolls, drinks and other snacks, it is perfect for grabbing a bite to eat when you haven’t had time to pack the picnic (or just fancy a change from the usual ham and cheese that lurks in your fridge). We wish them every success.
A date for your diary The Victorian Strollers are coming to town on the 8th of August. The Heritage Centre has asked if adults and children (including all shopkeepers!) can dress up in Victorian costume for the day, with prizes for the best! If you can give any help, please drop into the Heritage Centre on Clarence Road and speak to Sarah or David Burdett.
ECBA are sponsoring the swing boats to come back to Kings Square on Monday 8th August, As a child, I remember the very worst thing and we understand that are many other I could say to either of my parents was “I’m activities planned, along with the RNLI in the bored!” – it was always and very quickly met square all week. Please note that this event with a “Bored? BORED?! I don’t have time is not organised by the ECBA. to be bored, so here, you can do this!” Now I’m an adult myself, the thing that really gets Following the recent tragic incident the ECBA to me is when I hear people say “There’s have dontated some money to the memorial nothing to do in East Cowes”. It sends me fund of Keziah Flux-Edmonds. Many of our into a silent rage! members donated prizes for a raffle held at Where else can boast a beach, paddling pool, woodland, esplanade, three play parks and several large accessible green spaces, all available for free? I haven’t included such things as the Amy White Theatre, Osborne House, or the many fetes and fayres of St James and St Mildreds Churches. What about the variety of shops? We have everything from a tattoo studio to ferry port, with traditional sweet shops and a card shop thrown in. You can buy most things from a sofa to a loaf of bread, screws through to (dog) chews. Next time you’re about to say 18
the Prince of Wales, which raised a fantastic £3,500. For the record Many residents have been told that ECBA have endorsed a plan that sees Castle Street being used for ferry traffic, and the direction of traffic on Link Road reversed to accommodate Red Funnel traffic. This is completely untrue. Two members of the committee (myself being one of them)
East Cowes Business Association produced a very basic map which had many ideas to be explored, at no time was this considered to be a ‘this is what we want the redevelopment to look like’ plan. The ideas hadn’t even been seen by the committee, let alone endorsed by it. As usual, the truth doesn’t get in the way of a good story.
