We look forward to seeing you
Welcome to the July issue and thank you for picking up a copy of your local community magazine. This month’s issue, as usual is packed with news, information, advertisers, feature editorials and much more. Now summer is here the Island is getting busier and there are many events happening throughout July and you can find details of these on the ‘Dates for your Diary’ section on pages 6 and 7. July officially sees the start of Carnival season and we will keep you updated of when and where they are taking place. One of the best parts about my job is the positive feedback I receive from readers who let me know how useful and informative they find the magazine. I also hear from advertisers who have received a good response from their advert. I hope you all have a fantastic July and lets hope the sunshine continues and we can keep on enjoying the Island and all it has to offer. Until next month...

News Report from Town & County Cllr Karl Love - East Cowes. Email: karl.love@iow.gov.uk Facebook: Cllr Karl Love Once again it’s been a busy month with lots happening in and around East Cowes and Whippingham. I attended and reviewed the outline planning proposals at the consultation for the new Queensgate Foundation Primary School upgrade on 6th June. The plans can be viewed on the school website www. queensgateprimary.co.uk/new-build. The school does need an update and the school is designed to be efficient and fit for the future education of our children. However, it does not have any additional school places and this I think is an oversight because East Cowes is a growing community. It makes sense in my view to plan for the future needs now and to save money in the long run by building a school for future needs. There will be further opportunity to make your comments during the planning process. The Floating Bridge saga continues with the introduction of further tidal related reduced service operation. Neither the East nor West Cowes Town Councils were consulted or informed. Nor was I or Cllr PeaceyWilcox! Our communities were previously apologised to by Cllr David Stewart and we were promised better consultation and communication. This has not improved and in fact we have been treated with contempt as my questions and emails are simply ignored and go unanswered. We have offered lots of suggestions and to-date not one of them has been acted upon by IWC. I have asked for electronic signage to inform commuters of the bridge suspension, I have asked for better accessibility cover for mobility scooter users. We have asked and were promised new extension fingers to aid the loading of cars to prevent vehicular scraping. We were told the sound issues would be resolved months ago and that the chain depths were nearly
resolved but in reality we are no further forward at all! All we want is a frequent reliable service. I made as many suggestions as possible to enable a regular service to run including IWC purchasing launches and training staff to operate them to save money and replace the Bridge service until a new one could be obtained. I encourage everyone to lobby Cllr David Stewart, Bob Seely MP and contact the Transport Secretary Chris.grayling@mp@ parliment.uk – https://forms.dft.gov.uk/ contact-dft-and-agencies/ and ask for him to intervene. At a town consultation and planning meeting in June, the IWC leading regeneration officers stated that the council was pressing to have the Kingston link road opened as quickly as possible. A bit late, I hear you saying after 10 years of promises but at last we may finally see some actions? Local residents also stated and agreed that The East Cowes Esplanade was a great asset to our town with one of two remaining free paddling pools on the island. Following a long wait, we should soon hear as to whether or not, the new Victoria Quay Marina development will proceed by the end of July. This would be a significant change for our town. Thank you to the 20,113 signatures on the Save Our Studio School Petition Page. Whilst writing this we are all waiting to hear the outcome and I hope for a positive result. In the schools Ofsted report it was awarded ‘Requires Improvement and good for Personal Development and Behaviour. So it is as we all stated, the school is moving forwards and not failing and this result is a good one given that it’s only been open for 3 years. There were
News Report from Town & County Cllr Karl Love some great comments in the Ofsted report where more than 20,000 people state in the online petition that they want to keep this school open. This is such a fantastic endorsement of the people. Whatever the outcome, I believe in this school and have seen so many touching and heartfelt emails about how the school has changed pupils and families life’s for the better. I hope you enjoy the summer sun.

What you got there? The little red on this month’s front cover is a personal favourite of mine and local photographer Zoe Cox was able to get up close and personal with this little lady. Zoe has taken the time and dedication to visit her local nature reserve on an almost daily basis (in fact I wouldn’t be surprised if it was more than once some days!) and her perseverance has paid off as Zoe is now in the position where she can hand feed her and stroke her. You can obviously see from this photo how inquisitive she is and wants to know exactly what Zoe has in her hand. This shows the trust that can grow between local wildlife and humans.

Zoe is a wildlife fanatic and has thousands of photos of foxes, birds of prey and her favourite of them all,
red squirrels. Choosing just one picture for the front cover became a very hard task as she has managed to capture the beauty of them all. This is the second time that one of Zoe’s photos has appeared on the front cover, and last time was the amazing picture of a fox, which once again she gained the trust of, and he was happy to pose for her whilst she took pictures.

News Report for East Cowes from Mayor Peter Lloyd (Tel No: 01983 299082 and leave a message for the Mayor) Let’s start this month’s report with the old favourite topic the Floating Bridge. One year on and we are still suffering and waiting for the improved service that we were promised by the IWC. The newest problem being the serviced stopped due to the FB becoming over heated. However there are issues around the chain depth at certain states of the tide which are causing yachts to become caught on the chains. The harbour master and the IWC are in discussions to try to resolve the issue; in the meantime the FB service will be suspended for a few hours over a 10 day period per month when a launch service will operate. Please see the IWC web site for the FB timetable. Isle of Wight Day, over the weekend of the 22nd-23rd September we are all being encouraged to take part in the biggest beach clean on the Island as part of the IW Day celebrations. Red Funnel are financially backing an island wide beach clean, the objective is to encourage communities and visitors to help to remove as much plastic and litter as possible over the one weekend. Mr Douse of East Cowes has agreed with the Isle of Wight council to act as a local Ambassador for their proposed Island Beach Clean. So come on East Cowes start planning your beach clean event now. Studio School: I have sent a letter of support for the school on behalf of the Town Council to the various government departments, and the MP expressing the towns and parents concerns should it close. So I was surprised that the day following the end of the consultation period the Inspire Academy Trust, who runs the school, said that the school is financially unsustainable, to quote 10
“we have undertaken further analysis which confirms our view the school is financially unsustainable in its current form.” On a positive note the last few words could imply a change of how the school is run in the future. We await the final decision from the Department of Education. Queensgate Primary School, plans for the new replacement school buildings public consultation took place on the 6th June. The proposal as part of the governments Priority Schools Building Programme, will give the school a modern environment for its 420 intake of 4 to 11 year olds, with a flexible school layout and new sports facilities including social areas that can be used by the community. It is proposed to build the new 2 story school on the existing playground area and then demolish the old school buildings. The main contractor will be Sir Robert McAlpine Ltd. The Red Funnel Trinity Wharf development - An Island firm Stoneham Construction Ltd were awarded the contract to carry out the works to complete the first phase of the marshalling area at the former Trinity House depot site. The work should be completed by late July. Work is also being carried out to provide a new mooring facility for the new £10m roll on-roll off freight ship the Red Kestrel. Which I understand will moor at the mooring and when the unloading ramp for the car ferry is clear, it will slip its mooring and move to the ramp to unload / load. Red Kestrel is scheduled to be delivered in spring 2019. Beach hut ground rents on IWC owned land Continued over the page
News Report from Mayor Peter Lloyd Continued
including the East Cowes huts are possibly to increase based on a new valuation of £162.03 per m sq. these increases have at the point of writing not been approved by the IWC. Any raise will be combined with a 10 year lease replacing the current 3 year one. I came across an East Cowes Town Regatta Program for 1910 (photocopy of) while doing some sorting out. Although we do not have the coastguards and trinity house anymore, will do have a sailing and a rowing club here in East Cowes, and could include Whippingham and Folly even Gurnard sailing club, so what do you think, is it be a feasible idea to bring back a town regatta say next year, including something shore side for the land lovers.

Putting the Spirit back in the Community Community Spirited was established as a business in 2007, and since then they have become the extended family of many in their quest to actively support people who are struggling to remain independent, as well as those who live with dementia and those living with a learning/physical disability and their families. They became CQC Regulated in 2014 and their most recent inspection gave them an overall GOOD rating. Community Spirited understand that having different carers and seeing unfamiliar faces can be a very daunting and unsettling experience which is why their clients will always be assigned the same carer, and together they will build a friendship based on trust and respect. Their services range from personal care, support around the home, maintenance and outings. They often hold social activities at their head quarters located at the Parkside Pavilion, East Cowes. The team of carers continue to look at fresh ideas and ways in which they can support clients, carers and the local community. They believe that no one should struggle, feel lonely or isolated and encourage you to call for more information and an informal chat about how Community Spirited can help you or your family. You can speak to Jane or a member of the team on 01983 296592 or 07747 046202.
