Thank you for picking up a copy of your local community magazine which is filled with news, information, features and much more. There will be no mention of the weather this month, as I really can’t find any suitable words to describe it... I’m simply throwing open the curtains each day and just dealing with whatever season it is! The next couple of months are set to be really exciting as July kicks off carnival season and who doesn’t like a good carnival! There are 18 carnival events happening across the island in July and August with a mixture of children’s, main and illuminated. I think we can safely say there will be something for everyone. On page 13 you will find a handy list of locations, dates and times to cut out and keep so you don’t miss out. On a more serious note we have got together with Andy Hollebon of the Organ Donation Committee, Isle of Wight NHS Trust to bring awareness about the changes happening to organ donation next year and the importance of discussing your wishes with your family. You will find this feature on page 10. I hope you all have a great July and I look forward to catching up with you again soon.

YOU can change YOUR life By Maggie Currie

I have been to many seminars, courses, retreats, conferences, workshops where it is plainly obvious the people running them are using them to upsell their more expensive products. These can cost thousands of pounds and whilst they give you a glimpse of what they offer, you never actually get to benefit from it unless you pay out that money. There is also a lot of claptrap being sold out there that is solely to make money, and is not focused on YOU. I offer coaching and mentoring - for YOU to make changes in YOUR life, to help you to have more fun, more freedom and less stress. That is it... There is no catch. If you would like help with your personal development, career development, relationship issues, limiting beliefs or something else, please get in touch via hello@maggiecurrie.co.uk and we can have a chat about how best YOU and I can work together. Sometimes it can seem to be too scary to be coached on your own, so I also offer group coaching. There is a powerful energy when groups get together for growth and transformation, both personally and collectively.

Do you want to make some changes in your life? Not sure where to start? Work with me, Maggie Currie, Professional Transformational Coach. Learn how to live life like YOU and not how you think other people want you to be. This will bring you more freedom, more fun and less stress. News Report from Town & County Cllr Karl Love - East Cowes. Email: karl.love@iow.gov.uk Facebook: Cllr Karl Love As the dust settles from our East Cowes 2019 Celebration events our community looks excitedly to the future. There is a new freshness with our community spirit spreading as people share ideas about what they want to see to follow on from this. I and the Community Partnership want to hear about your suggestions so please let us know. 2019 is not finished yet and we are thinking about Cowes week and we do have another project for implementation this summer. I want to say a massive thank you to everyone involved with the 2019 events without you all contributing we would not have succeeded. There are discussions and planning about creating an East Cowes Heritage project which will also help create the conditions for future town investments, sustainable jobs and promoting our island and town. It’s not solely about our V&A connections but about our industrial heritage and supporting its continuation in our town. The community is working towards a possible V&A style maritime museum. It’s early days but much work has already been done by local people. A very significant and important meeting took place this month with Historic England’s - Places Panel which included Directors of it’s organisation. It was an incredible positive meeting for everyone concerned and only good can come from this for our community as enthusiasm for our community was mutually shared. In other news The Victoria Tavern has a fresh new look inside and they have plans to move forward so why not stop in and see for yourself the changes. The old library looks unsightly right now but again there are new exciting ideas for it and along with another shop in the street a refresh feels imminent and we could see a new flurry of business 6

investments in lower York Avenue soon as one door closes and others open. The area around the Floating Bridge is to be redesigned. In the meantime please help support our local shops where you can. Every penny matters for the High Street and our local large industries do help to support it through their workforce interactions. When it comes to town parking issues there is a tension between the ever growing car population as it moves on from one family car to two, three or four. That’s before we even look to the employment needs for parking. Some community individuals are asking for zoned parking which I will support as long as the majority who live in that road or community agree to it. I’m very happy to receive any signed petition to support this. I have received individual requests but as I have stated to them, I need the support of the wider inclusive community to progress and that requires them to do door knocking and collecting signatures. I’m also trying to influence the proposed road plans for the town highways network changes that will be implemented in our town during 2020. I’m trying hard to include a green cycle route and better pedestrianisation of the plans. I do know it’s intended for traffic lights to be placed by the fire station junction at Wells Road and York Avenue. This will provide a much needed speed reduction. I have been aware of the intention to develop the area in Millfield Avenue approaching the Holly Cross Primary School for about a year but not been involved or approached by the developers. My contacts inform me that the developer is now formulating it’s plans. They will have to follow a planning process. I understand some

As you can all see further improvements are taking place along the Esplanade with new pavements and the wood shelter being painted. In other news I am delighted to also hear about the positive progressive changes which the parishioners of the St James’ Church are discussing for inclusion of community regeneration in our town. I look forward to hearing more about their plans in the coming months. I cannot comment on either the Crossways consultation or by-election as updates occur after this report is written. I welcome the new Council member for Whippingham and Osborne and will work together with them for the better good of the town. A meeting is intended to be called to discuss the feelings of the community following the consultation of Crossways development proposals. I will keep you informed. Finally, I hope those of you who attended the festival enjoyed it as much as I did as I went along for the very first time. 7

Do your family know whether you want to be an organ donor? Have you ever talked about organ donation with them? If the answer is no, then you’re not alone; sadly, many donation opportunities are lost every year because families don’t know if their loved one wanted to be a donor. From spring 2020, all adults in England will be considered an organ donor when they die unless they had recorded a decision not to donate or are in one of the excluded groups. Even with a change in the law next year we need more people to talk about organ donation to increase the number of transplants that happen. It will be just as important in 2020 to join the Organ Donation Register and discuss your wishes with family and friends as it is now. You can record your decision to opt in or out on the Organ Donor Register. Those excluded will be people under 18, people who have lived in England for less than 12 months or who are not living here voluntarily, and people who lack the capacity to understand the change. Adults covered by the change will still have a choice whether they want to be an organ donor and which organs they would like to donate, and their families will still be involved before organ donation goes ahead. In the UK…… • Around 6,000 people There’s no time like the present to talk about it. Nationally across the UK are waiting for millions of people are on the NHS Organ Donor Register an organ transplant already but only one in every hundred will die in • Three people a day die in circumstances where they could donate, so every donor is need of a transplant due to precious. Here on the Island there are about 60,000 people a shortage of people being on the Organ Donation Register which means there are willing to donate organs around 80,000 people who are not on the register. Last year • Only one in three adults there were 8 organ donors on the Island resulting in 20 has told their partner / family patients receiving a transplant. You could help someone their organ donation decision. waiting for that vital call, by joining the NHS Organ Donor More info www. Register and by telling your family. Register now at organdonation.nhs.uk www.organdonation.nhs.uk. Staff at St. Mary’s Hospital work closely with Specialist Organ Donation Nurses from the national NHS Blood and Transplant organisation to ensure that organ donation proceeds smoothly in a way that meets the wishes of the donor and family. The Island’s Organ Donation Committee want to start a support group for everyone with an interest in organ donation – friends and family of donors, donor recipients and anyone else with a particular interest. This informal group would provide an opportunity to talk about experiences and to participate in awareness raising activities. If you would be interested in being part of the Island’s Organ Donation Support Group then please contact me by e-mailing andyhollebon@nhs.net or on 07544-555839. East Cowes Town Council - Clerks Report The Full Council meeting in May saw the election of Councillor Jane Rann as Mayor and Councillor Michael Paler as Deputy Mayor. Councillors also volunteered to represent the town on a number of local bodies including The Floating Bridge User Group, the IW Council Community Plastic Forum, East Cowes Community Partnership and Cowes Town Council. In June, reports were received from the Environment Officer and the Police Community Service Officer. The town council also heard a presentation from Sally List, of the Mountbatten Neighbours Project. This project will be training volunteers in 6 areas on the Island, including East Cowes, who will be helping to deliver a programme to reduce loneliness. The library has settled in well in its new home at the Town Hall. Local people are encouraged to use this facility. It is open on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday mornings, and on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. The Crossways development is a matter of interest to East Cowes Residents. Public Exhibitions were held in Whippingham and East Cowes during June and If you were not been able to attend, please keep an eye out for an online opportunity to give your views online. The bi-centenary of the births of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert were celebrated in East Cowes at the end of May and was a great success. The Town Council hosted a civic reception at the Town Hall welcoming 12 12

visitors from Coburg, descendants of Queen Victoria’s munchie and Romanov family as well as members of the local community many of whom had been key to organising the weekend’s events. The Grand Exhibition prepared by East Cowes Heritage Centre was launched and ran over the weekend attracting many visitors. A whole host of events took place including an Esplanade Festival, Street Art and the display of the Town Tapestry. Congratulations to the East Cowes Community Partnership and East Cowes Business Association on a wonderful weekend. East Cowes now has its own town trail. The Walk of History has seen 22 stone markers set into the footpath through the town and up to Osborne House. The trail was opened by the Mayor. The Town Council will be producing a more comprehensive newsletter to be published quarterly from September to celebrate all that is going on in the town and keep residents informed about up coming projects. It is an exciting time for East Cowes Town Council. Look out for the launch of a series of East Cowes Arts and Culture events being planned and the start of a community hub project. Finally, a huge thank you to all who helped and supported recent events.
