Here to Help You In these uncertain and difficult times we want you to know that we are here and can help you with any of the following legal matters that concern you. Wills – Do you really know who will benefit from your estate in the event of your death? It may not be the people you think. Powers of Attorney – If you cease to be able to manage your property and financial affairs or your health and welfare who will speak on your behalf ? Your spouse or partner or children will not automatically have such authority and you may find that the only recourse is for Social Services to step in or for a family member to apply to the Court of Protection. This is an expensive and lengthy process. Property – Do you have concerns about your ownership of property or your legal right to occupy the property you live in? Joint ownership or occupation of property can cause difficulties in the event of the death of the owner or joint owner. Do you know if you are protected? Call us and we can advise how best we can help you.

Helping You Achieve Your Aims In Life

Hello and welcome to the July issue. I’m extremely excited that this issue is back to being in print as the last two months have been online only due to Covid-19 regulations and although this worked well at the time I know many of you missed going out to pick up your copy from local distributors. I haven’t yet reinstated the ‘Dates for your Diary’ section as most events have been cancelled and everything is still very much ‘up in the air’ but to ensure you don’t get bored I have included a double page puzzle section which will keep your brain active!! Following the great response I had last month on how great the new ‘recipe’ section was I thought it was only right that I give you another mouth watering treat, and you will find this on page 13.

Daisy, Daisy…. A blanket of daisies reaching as far as the eye can see… and what a beautiful sight it is. Although the photographer of this meadow, James Whillier sees this view many times a day he never gets bored of it and certainly doesn’t take it for granted. He was kind enough to capture it and allow us to share in on this month’s front cover. Daisy Valley as James likes to call it is a very special place, and this wild flower meadow was created by Chris Spence the owner of the farm who over the last 50 years has planted thousands of trees and flowers to ensure the continued survival of our birds and bees. James lives in Calbourne and is lucky enough to run his own fishing bait and essential tackle shop from here, so this is the view that welcomes him every day. When he is not working in the shop James can often be seen roaming around the farm taking pictures of local wildlife and the inhabitants of this gorgeous meadow. His business is called Baitstation and is open until 8pm and is located on Newbarn Farm in Calbourne. It’s a traditional shop selling bait and tackle for sea and coarse fishing but with a modern outlook as he likes to promote catch and release. Next time you are passing pop into Baitstation, say hello to James and soak up the view.

East Cowes Town Council - Clerks Report East Cowes Town Council has continued to operate throughout the lockdown period with the Clerk and Assistant Clerk working from home. The caretakers continue to undertake maintenance tasks whilst observing social distancing rules. Amongst other things they have continued a program of inspecting and maintaining all play park facilities, replaced the net in the tennis court, refurbished the benches on the Esplanade and are preparing the public toilets to enable government guidelines to be implemented prior to reopening. Other staff have been supporting the valuable work of the East Cowes and Whippingham Community Volunteer Support Hub which has been co-ordinated by Councillor Paler, assisted by Councillor Love. Anyone needing support can still call 823600 or find details on social media www.facebook.com/ eastcowestowncoucilcoronasupport. At the time of writing the Town Council has been taking decisions on council matters and planning applications remotely. All resolutions passed in this way have been posted on the website to ensure they are accessible to the public. Due to the on-going difficulty in holding physical meetings it is expected that future meetings will be held remotely by Zoom. The agenda and details of how to join these meetings will be available on the council’s website www. eastcowestowncouncil.co.uk and Facebook, www.facebook.com/eastcowestowncouncil.

and in line with government guidance. The Town Council will ensure that all facilities have undergone a rigorous risk assessment before reopening and that any advised government measures are in place before reopening. When these facilities can open please ensure that you observe the guidance to keep yourself and others safe. At present it is not possible to say when the Town Hall and Library will be able to reopen. You may have heard that the much loved pantomime put on by the Amy White Theatre will not be taking place this year, but you can look forward to a splendid performance of Beauty and the Beast in 2021. Everyone needs something to look forward to. If you wish to cancel a booking you have made at the Town Hall please contact us by email so that a refund can be organised; clerk@eastcowestowncouncil. co.uk. If you are missing the library please remember that you can access free e-books from the Library service Borrowbox scheme www.iow.gov. uk/Residents/Libraries-Cultural-andHeritage/Library-Enjoy/eBooks.

News is awaited on the outcome of the application for a Public Works Loan to be able to go ahead with the Community Hub and Library project. It is hoped that the community spirit and connections that On a positive note Care in the Garden have been generated as people have pulled have started planting up the boxes and together during the virus crisis become a baskets around the town. As the easing of legacy that can be enjoyed by the town the Covid-19 restrictions began a new net and across the Island. This new facility was purchased and the tennis courts were will provide many opportunities for this opened daily from 8.00am-8.30pm or dusk. Preparations are being made to enable other community spirit to continue long into the facilities to be opened at the appropriate time future. 6

Looking out for Hedgehogs... Some people are lucky enough to have a regular nightly visit from these adorable mammals. The island as a whole has a love for all wildlife and it is good to know that there is a specialist team of hedgehog carers for the island and their work involves offering advice, support and information to the public. They also take in injured or sick hedgehogs to help them recover before releasing them back to the wild. We have got together with Zoe from Save Our Hedgehogs Isle of Wight and Zoe has kindly given some advice below to ensure the ongoing protection of any hoggies we come across. What to do if you have a hedgehog visiting your garden? Always have fresh water available and you can also put out dry cat or dog food. Make sure any netting is secured as they could get tangled up. If you have ponds either cover over or add in a ramp for access in case they fall in. Have a messy patch as they love rummaging in undergrowth. Enjoy them from a far. If you think a hedgehog is in trouble If a hedgehog is seen in the daylight it might be in trouble, as they are nocturnal animals. They might be walking like they are drunk or unsteady – this is a sign of dehydration. A hedgehog walking with purpose might be a new mother moving a nest especially if she has been disturbed. Watch for signs she is moving her nest, she would be carrying nesting and then would transfer the babies. In the autumn the juvenile’s born will likely be too small to hibernate so they will need to come to us for the winter. Be careful when clearing your garden too as we see strimming injury’s, always feel around before gardening. If there is an obvious injury place the hedgehog in a light colour towel, in a high sided box and call myself or Jacquie on 01983 613145 and we will offer the advice you need. Save Our Hedgehogs Isle of Wight often attend events across the island and take hedgehogs along for people to see and their Facebook page has lots of helpful hints and tips and is the place where they provide updates of the hedgehogs they have looked after. www.facebook.com/saveourhedgehogs 12

Home-Made Ice Cream Summer is here at last... and nothing beats a bowl of ice cream on these sweltering days. Gone are the days of needing specialist equipment and with just two ingredients plus your chosen topping it’s so easy to make yourself. This recipe is a favourite of Sophie Toogood who enjoys making this silky smooth ice cream with daughter Layla. They have been experimenting with flavours and below is the main recipe and some of their favourite suggestions for flavours. Ingredients 1 can of condensed milk 2 cups or 450ml of double cream Method 1) Whip the double cream until stiff peaks form. Be careful not to over whip. 2) Add in the can of condensed milk and continue to whip just until the condensed milk is combined with the cream. 3) Add in any flavorings you wish and stir through the mixture. (see ideas below). You can make any combination you wish! 4) Scoop ice cream into resealable tub. Cover the ice cream mixture in clingfilm to stop ice crystals forming, put on the lid and put into the freezer for 6-8 hours until set. If you wanted to make mint chocolate chip ice cream, add in 2tsp of mint extract, a few drops of green food colouring and a handful of chocolate chips. For chocolate ice cream, add in 2tbsp of cocoa powder (it will look light at first, but it soon darkens up while the ice cream is in the freezer) You can also buy some chocolate sauce and drizzle it through the mixture and on top as an extra burst of flavour.

News Report from Town & County Cllr Karl Love - East Cowes. Email: karl.love@iow.gov.uk Facebook: Cllr Karl Love The months are marching on and it will certainly be a year never to be forgotten not least because of this virus but also because of the amazing weather and magnificent sunsets that we have seen. At the time of writing I’ve still not heard about the proposed planning application for the former Frank James hospital. It has been held up due to complications within the application and I will inform you when I know any further information. The Isle of Wight Council will take the decision on whether to purchase Venture Quays in July which includes the Columbine Building, The Albany Barracks, The Maresfield Rd carpark/field and Albany buildings. I cannot tell you very much about what lies ahead in the future for this site because as per usual, our administration prefer to keep their plans out of sight. What we do know is that outline planning is already granted for the entire site including housing and tower blocks. I have concluded that the best option in order to protect the future of shipbuilding and jobs and possibly have some say over what is to be constructed on the land, is to support the purchase of the site by IWC. The alternative is for the land to be put back on the open market and for a developer to come along and purchase it. We will of course have no control over their plans. I will do everything in my power to try and get the best deal for the people of East Cowes within the proposed purchase of the lands by IWC. A successful project is one with a firm foundation and one that the majority can support.

will be minimal. I have been in discussion with Island Roads about a proposal for a community project to address some of the elements of the landslip on the Esplanade. I am grateful to Stephen Ashman from Island Roads for his help and support and I’ll get back to you with more information as soon as I can. I’m also pleased to report that the Stigwood Art is now safe and secure undercover at the Classic Boat Museum in West Cowes along with the Princess Margaret Hovercraft propeller. We are grateful to the Boat Museum for giving them a home. The facilities, playground and paddling pool have all been out of use and we do hope that they will be back in use sometime later this year. It is important to follow the regulations and guidance of government in reopening them. There has been significant increases in the numbers of people using the Esplanade. It’s a joy to see everybody having fun but I would ask that people follow the highway code and rules in order to keep the footways and roads open at all times. If the bins are full please take your rubbish home.

The Esplanade lies within the inner harbour which extends out from Old Castle Point across the bay beyond the breakwater and running down to Egypt Point. The speed limit within the inner harbour is 6 knots and I would kindly ask jet ski users not to approach the beach areas or drive at high-speed inside the inner harbour. The area is also a special protection area for birds and at low water Work continues on improving our roads and you can all see the rare Sea Grasses that I’m so pleased to see this happening. It will the birds and other creatures enjoy. Dogs cause some disruption which I hope continued over the page 14

News Report from Town & County Cllr Karl Love - East Cowes. Email: karl.love@iow.gov.uk Facebook: Cllr Karl Love are no longer allowed on some of the beaches but are allowed towards the end of the Esplanade behind the new gate and starting from the next set of steps. Please enjoy the area but don’t allow your dogs to chase the birds. You may also have noticed that the red barriers have now been removed by my request after the placement of the new gate. There are many people who like to swim from the Esplanade so please help look out for them putting safety first. There are also several life belts placed for safety. A couple of concerns have been raised about people fishing and obstructing the Esplanade walkways. The walkways are there for all to enjoy but for those who have reduced mobility and visual impairments fishing equipment can present a serious threat to their safety. It’s one thing to use fishing rods but something quite different to use large fishing rigs that cause obstructions. The Esplanade road is now being monitored more closely by IWC parking attendants after reports of obstructions and parking on yellow lines. I wanted to say thank you to the volunteers who from East Cowes Esplanade Regeneration Group and are working to provide initiatives to improve the area. Cllr Paler and I have been working alongside the East Cowes crafters who have done a wonderful job in helping to brighten our town in the last months. They are working on plans to create an even bigger and brighter display of colour bringing art and culture into the town for all to enjoy. The people of East Cowes have been quite outstanding in the last months and a big shout out to all of those volunteers and people who have been out shopping and helping in any small way during this epidemic. It is still important to keep our social distance to prevent a second wave of this virus. It is also prudent to plan for this event but pray that it never comes. As local shops and businesses start to open please can you try to help them by spending just a few pounds. More information will be provided about the opening up of local services and amenities as and when it is safe to do so. Please keep an eye on my Facebook page for this information.

We are the only private care agency based here in East Cowes and have been established since 2007. We do our own assessment of your needs and set up a care plan that suits and meets your requirements. Our hourly rates are the best and we look after our carers well. We are registered and regulated with CQC and hold a GOOD rating.

If you are interested in what we do in the community and are looking for work, you drive and have the use of a car then please visit our website and tell us why you feel you would be an asset to our lovely team of carers. Alternate weekends and a share of evenings are essential for us. Everything we do is community based and we offer something different. We go into care homes and deliver activities in a group and also take residents out in the community. Our work is not just personal care, we have built our business on social activities in our community.

Giving you the warmth and care of a famuily, with the trust and support of a friend...

Our Mental Wellness, Crafty, Knit & Natter and Adult Youth Groups have been temporarily cancelled until further notice due to the Coronavirus outbreak. We look forward to seeing you all again once isolation is over. Do you know anyone who is isolated and would benefit from having a FREE craft bag from us?

We want people to have a purpose and to feel like they are connected to others and by receiving one of our FREE Craft Bags they are then linking in remotely with our community craft group and we hope that eventually they will come along to our group in East Cowes. We are reaching out to make our community more connected, especially in the difficult times we are currently facing. We also have a few children’s bags... maybe you know a child in hospital or being home schooled? We just need their home details.

Special thanks to

for supporting our community projects
