Another month has flown by and here we are with the June issue. As I write this introduction the sun is shining and I really hope that June is the start of the summer season and we get to enjoy many more sunny days here on the Island. I have already had my first picnic of the year at the beach, it was lovely and sunny one moment and the next it was raining, thankfully not heavy but I was in a difficult conundrum; do I pack up and run to the car as quickly as I could or do I ride it out and get wet. Well, I did the latter but after 20 minutes I gave up! This months front cover is amazing and all thanks to local photographer Nick Edwards. You can read all about Nicks passion on page 5. Keeping on the wildlife theme, on page 14 you can read all about helping to save hedgehogs here on the Island. June is a busy month with events happening across the Island and you will find our ‘Dates for your Diary’ on pages 8 and 9 and don’t forget Father’s Day is on Sunday 16th June. I hope you all have a great month and I look forward to catching up with you soon.

East Cowes Town Council - Clerks Report Now that we are into spring and looking forward to the summer months ahead, many of the facilities operated and maintained by the Town Council are being appreciated. The paddling pool has recently been refurbished and is already being enjoyed. It is hoped that as many people as possible will make use of the Esplanade, Skate Park, Multi Gym and recreation ground play areas as well as quieter spots like Cadet’s Walk. The Town Council appeals to members of the public to use litter bins provided or take litter home with them to keep the town looking good. Many thanks to those of you who took part in the community litter pick organised by the Town Council and attended by councillors. Volunteers collected 65kg of rubbish in just two hours. These will be taking place several times a year. Despite the number of ways we can communicate these days people often say they do not know what is going on. In addition to finding out information in this publication the Town Council now produces a monthly newsletter “East Cowes Town Crier”. Copies are distributed around the town and are also available in the Library and from the lobby of the Town Hall. For those of you who would rather access information online you will be pleased to hear that a new website is currently being put together. The Crossways development is a concern to people of the town. Sarah Chatwin from ERMC, who have been commissioned to assist with the public consultation, attended a Town Council meeting in May 6

to explain what will be happening during June. There will be 2 exhibition drop in sessions as well as interactive web-based information. It is expected that the developers will submit an outline planning application for this residential scheme during August/September. After this formal consultation takes place with the Local Planning Authority. If the outline application is approved a second set of exhibitions will be held giving the local community opportunity to comment during March/April 2020. The Town Council has also received an update concerning the demolition works at Red Funnel and continues to be proactive with regard to the proposed traffic schemes for the town centre. More information should be forthcoming early in the summer. May was a busy month. The Mayor invited local people to attend the Annual Town Meeting on 9th May. This community meeting was well attended with contributions from Community Spirited, East Cowes Heritage Centre, East Cowes Community Partnership and the East Cowes Business Association. You may be able to see snippets of the meeting when the film “Lift the Lid on Island Culture” is complete– a project funded by the Isle of Wight Council in conjunction with The Arts Council.

News Report from Town & County Cllr Karl Love - East Cowes. Email: karl.love@iow.gov.uk Facebook: Cllr Karl Love There are so many people I need to thank for the huge effort involved in making the East Cowes 2019 Bicentennial Event the success it was . Two years of planning went into the preparation and we were delighted and honoured to have received HRH the Duke of Kent, the Mayor of Coburg and the decedents of Abdul Karim to our town to mark the occasion. In particularly I wanted to thank our organising committee within the East Cowes Community Partnership, The Business Association, The Town Council, IWC and the sponsorship which we have received. A special mention needs to be made however to the work of Ken Wheeler for the creation of the Queen Victoria Town Trail, Lin Kemp in creating the Town Tapestry and David Hill for his work on the Bicentennial V&A Bench. Osborne House and the RNLI also held events along with the Heritage Centre and Space 5. The Whippingham and Osborne ward election takes place on 20th June. Change only happens when communities join together and express themselves through the ballot box. It’s important to cast your vote in whichever political box you choose to endorse. Whippingham, Osborne and East Cowes share many commonalities and issues. I, and the people of the ward look forward to a fresh new political representation. On other news, have you noticed the new town street furniture arriving and the painting of benches and poles in the last month! Many of the seats in the town and along the Esplanade have been replaced as part of the ongoing maintenance by Island Roads and improvements made by the Town Council. There is certainly a fresh feel to our community but we should not forget that our town has many living within it who can barely 10

pay household bills. The aim of IWC must be to also raise the living standard of its population and to facilitate increased job and career opportunities. We must continue to make East Cowes a great place to live and to work. East Cowes is the sparkling jewel in the Island regeneration crown and we must look after it and try to shape our communities destiny, as we the local people would want to see it developed. In other news the Crossways Agricultural Land, adjacent to Queensgate school, is back in the headlines for intended housing redevelopment. We have not received much information about the proposed development to-date however, it’s reported that it’s a housing complex development proposal only. Consultation is expected to commence in June. I will keep you informed of any developments as I receive the updates myself. Our community and island people were also only recently consulted about the Island Plan where local people unanimously rejected the scale of building on our island proposed by Isle of Wight Council. During this consultation I along with the East Cowes town council and many others, requested that the crossways agricultural site remains an important open green buffer and wildlife zone. It’s an important feeding ground for rare bats and birds who can be observed most evenings over the fields. We must also recognise that East Cowes and Whippingham is a peninsula with a single road in and out. We do not have the infrastructure to sustain large-scale developments like this. We also have an arterial road which carries more than 50% of the islands incoming and exiting transportation. I’m not against small-scale housing development where brown field sites can be utilised and introduce new environmental features that add value to the community.

News Report from Cllr Karl Love continued

Finally, the Red Funnel terminal development, and the redevelopment of the Columbine building and surrounding area is currently looking open and spacious with the removal of buildings. There is going to be future development within this location and again we do not yet know what this will look like. There have been serious implications for our ship builders and a great deal still hangs in the balance. We hope and will press for community inclusion and consultation in reshaping our town environment. A small group of people have been working towards a development plan proposal for the Columbine building and looking at the possibility of it becoming a museum of living local Maritime Heritage, something along the lines of the Victoria and Albert Museum. This is of course a long-term plan and presumes the positive relocation to improved local construction site, for our towns important shipbuilders. The Isle of Wight Council is attempting to purchase the Columbine Buildings and the surrounding lands owned by Homes England. I am informed that planning work is continuing for the redesign of road layouts for our town. The implementation is expected to be completed by the summer of 2020. I am following this closely to ensure that wherever possible the scheme meets the needs of our local people as a priority and includes green measures, such as cycleways and safe walking routes. Any scheme needs to be consulted upon by the people. To this end, I have suggested that East Cowes town council develop its own town green policy and action plans. This would not simply be about the town centre but about the community we live in as a whole. As we move into the summer months I wish you all a great summer and please remember, to slap on lots of suncream and to take your beach or countyside picnic rubbish away with you.

Save our Hedgehogs Isle of Wight We are hedgehog carers for the island and our work involves offering advice, support and information to the public and we also take in injured or sick hedgehogs to help them recover before releasing them back to the wild. Hedgehogs are at threat of extinction with numbers declining rapidly so helping everyone be more aware is really important. If you want to encourage hedgehogs into your garden make sure you have small square entry points, always have water available and you can provide dog or cat biscuits too. If you think a hedgehog is in trouble. Place in a light coloured towel in a high sided box and call Jacquie or Zoe on 01983 613145 who will offer the advice you need. Some key things to be aware of. If a Hedgehog is seen in the daylight it might be in trouble, as they are nocturnal animals. They might be a new mother moving a nest especially if she has been disturbed. Watch for signs she is moving her nest. If not, it probably needs checking over. In the autumn the juvenile’s born will likely be too small to hibernate so they will need to come to us for the winter. Be careful when clearing your garden too as we see many strimming injuries, always feel around before gardening. If there is obvious injury or you are just not sure always call us so we will take them in. We visit vets if need be and rehabilitate them often releasing them back to where they were found.

14

We attend events across the island and take hedgehogs along for people to see and our Facebook page has lots of helpful hints and tips and is the place where we provide updates of the hedgehogs we have looked after.
