June 2016

Dear Readers Welcome to the June issue of Island Magazines. I can’t believe that close to half the year has gone already. I’m loving these light evenings and there is no better place to be then here on the Island, especially if the sun is shining. We have had a few really nice hot days recently, as well as a few miserable ones too, but lets hope that once summer is finally here the sun will shine every day. The Island will be getting ready for the Isle of Wight Festival in June and there will be celebrations happening across the Island to mark the occasion of the Queens 90th Birthday. There are many other events happening too and you will find details of them all in the ‘Dates for your Diary’ section on pages 18 and 19. If you are holding or know of an upcoming event please drop me an email so we can include it in the next issue. I hope you enjoy reading this months issue and catching up on all the latest news and information happening in the community. Until next month... Break the Cycle Community Interest Company has been set up to help and support survivors of domestic abuse to move forward with their lives now they have escaped from an abusive relationship and are living independently. Weeks, months and years afterwards, a domestic abuse survivor, although away from the violence, can still live a life mentally imprisoned by the trauma they have experienced. Many reporting a deep sense of self doubt and feelings of uselessness and insecurity about the future. When talking to men and women who would potentially take part in the program, many spoke of a need for support to forgive themselves for being victims of abuse and overcome a lack of self worth so they were able to have a better outcome in life for not only themselves but their children also. The six module programme is designed to fill the gap between agency provision and social care. While external agencies support these men and women to build external aspects of recovery, ‘Mind the Gap’ will work with the internal aspects of recovery supporting participants to not only come to terms with their experience but live a fulfilled life past the experience too.

The Perfect Summer Cake I’ve been slaving over a hot stove trying to find a quick and easy cake recipe… I’ve tried and tested it several times and although its edible and tastes nice, I’ll admit it’s not the best cake I have ever made, but, and here is the good news, there are only 2 ingredients involved and one of them is ice cream and who doesn’t like ice cream. The other ingredient is self raising flour. The good thing with this cake is you can use any flavour ice cream but preferably full fat. I have tried it with low fat and dairy free but they just aren’t right – you can’t have a low fat cake, its just not right. The two ingredients you need are 175g of self raising flour and 1 pint of melted ice cream. Turn on the oven to 180°C and line a loaf tin with parchment paper. Sieve the flour into a bowl and add the melted ice cream and whisk or beat away. I used an electric whisk just to make it a bit easier. Make sure the two ingredients are combined and then pour into the loaf tin and bake for 35-40 minutes. If you want to get creative, before you pour into the loaf tin you can add any little extras such as chocolate chips or nuts and you’ll need about 75g of these. As before ensure they are mixed through evenly and bake as normal. Every oven is different and you can check if its cooked all the way through by using a skewer or knife in the centre of the cake and just make sure it comes out clean. If you think the top is cooking too fast you can always cover with some foil. Once cooked, leave to cool slightly and then turn out and enjoy a slice of ice cream cake or ice cream loaf, depends what you want to call it and for those that really like to indulge like myself serve with a generous scoop of ice cream on the side. 8

A Gardening Web Designer‌ After working for two global corporations and then being made redundant twice, Tim Leal realised drastic action was needed and in 2005 he became self-employed and launched TL Design Works which specialises in the design and developing of websites.

Over the past 11 years Tim has worked with a variety of local bands, beauty salons, bed and breakfasts and other small businesses using a combination of bespoke development and off-the-shelf content management systems including integrating online shopping carts and hosting services. TL Design Works offer a range of services to cover all budgets and Tim is always happy to sit and listen to what the customer wants and works with them to make it happen. Two years ago Tim realised that sitting at a computer all day was not all it was cracked up to be and knew that he also needed to combine some physical work to stop the aches, pains and creaks in his joints. Tim decided to take his love of design and his hobby of gardening one step further and started offering a Garden Maintenance Service covering most aspects of gardening from planting out, grass cutting, hedge trimming, lawn care, weeding and so on and can also take on handyman work if someone asks. Tim now splits his time between gardening and website work and you can call him on 01983 613237 or go to his websites for more information. East Cowes Business Association Our St George’s Day event was a success and that they can have on their surroundings, and as a we hope that you were able to take part in some of the free activities on offer. We allows anybody to make wanted to have a bit of fun and celebrate our representation on any planning application, great community, as well as our patron saint! anywhere in the country. Churchill famously said “We shape our buildings, thereafter they shape us” and I firmly believe that. The We still hear people say that the ECBA is ‘for biggest battles often come down to whether retail only’ which is completely wrong. If you’re in business, then we’re for you! Around a particular design is liked, and as design is half of our members (like me) provide services, subjective, this can cause problems. rather than goods, but find that the benefits of belonging to a local organisation are certainly worth the £25 annual membership fee. We want all businesses and the town to thrive, and one way that we can all make this happen is simply by using local services and shops. Before going online or rushing into Newport, try YOUR town centre, you may be pleasantly surprised.

It is always encouraging to see new shops and businesses open, but we should also recognise those which have been a part of our community for many years. One of the longest running shopkeepers in East Cowes is Chris Wilson who took over Housecrafts in 1979 with his wife Janet.

I have been self-employed for over 4 years now (SJC Planning) and have not looked back. My workload is incredibly varied and interesting; I have been involved in everything from bicycle racks to huge solar farm developments but without doubt the part I love most about it, is the fact that I work from home, fitting in around not only my own family, but those of my clients. The ECBA has meant that although I am a lone worker for a good part of my week, I get the benefit of talking to other people regularly and forming a wider professional relationship which I would otherwise not be able to. I was genuinely surprised to find out how many other home workers there are in our town, we’re all over the place!

Housecrafts has changed a lot over the years, but the shop remains a family run business with Tracy (his daughter and owner of Flix, next David Burdett from the Heritage Centre on door) and Kev his son-in-law helping out. The Clarence Road has been compiling a list of range includes gardening, household, plumbing every business in East Cowes to act as a and electrical goods, so if you haven’t been in historical record and would like to hear from for a while go and take a look at the vast array you (regardless of whether you are a member on offer and get some practical advice on how of ECBA or not). The Arch explained

You’ve read about it in the local paper, on Cllr Hillard’s Facebook page, heard about it on the radio and have even seen it yourself, but what is the arch all about? How does it represent the town and what is the point? Why is it there and how will it get anyone into the town to spend money? Why is it made of chains and not Victorian looking?

The positioning of the arch itself was a challenge for several reasons; access of course had to be maintained, but the real issue was due to the different landowners. Councillor Luisa Hillard – County Councillor for East Cowes. Phone/text: 07964 869341 or email luisa.hillard@iow.gov.uk The 1st June is a key date this year which will see changes to some services and deadlines for important local issues. The issue causing me the most sleepless nights over the last year or so has been the Red Funnel planning application. This month we will find out what Red Funnel plan to do about their part of the East Cowes redevelopment – whether to submit a new plan, or to appeal against the Planning Committee refusal. A stakeholder meeting was arranged a couple of weeks ago to discuss the options and I know that several alternative plans have been designed and put forward by residents, including myself.

gets sold to generate income for the Council – helping to fund local services which are suffering from government cuts. Please may I remind everyone again that those with disabilities or long-term health problems can apply for a free ‘Assisted Collection’ for your bins. After a long wait the Council’s Parking Strategy is now complete and out for consultation. Please read this and comment on the situation in East Cowes as many residents report that parking is limited.

I will let you know the outcome in the next issue! I am hopeful that a compromise might be reached which will deliver benefit to the community, as well as Red Funnel – true regeneration of the town centre – improved access to the waterfront, extra shops and restaurants (with job creation), improved traffic flow, and a more attractive marshalling yard.

One recommendation for East Cowes is to introduce Resident Parking Zones with permits for on-street parking. What we also need is a long stay car park for the potentially displaced commuters and holiday makers to use. Paper copies are likely to be in the Library or visit www. iwight.com/consultations and comment on-line.

At the time of writing this I have just ‘celebrated’ my three year anniversary of being a County Councillor. So much has happened in that time and I continue to work on local projects to leave a lasting legacy of my time in office.

From 1st June there will be a change to the pedestrian charges on the Floating Bridge and the ticket machines will come into service. Although I have spoken out against charging I understand that this is a desperate attempt by the Council to ‘bridge’ the funding gap caused by yearly government cuts.

Last month you should have received either wheelie bins (one green, one black) or two gull proof sacks. There are no major changes to the waste collection but the rules are going to be more strictly enforced from now on to improve the quality and volume of recycling, particularly paper. Your recycling 14

Some good news: This month we shall see the re-launch of the East Cowes Community Partnership for the purpose of delivering community projects and events. Your support and help would be appreciated as these things always seem to fall on the same
