Dear Readers Welcome to the June issue of Island Magazines. Now that the local elections are over we need to focus our attention on the general election which takes place on the 8th June. Don’t forget to vote and have your say. Town and County Councillors Karl Love and Julia Baker-Smith will be supplying reports each month of news and information happening in the area along with the regular reports from the East Cowes Town Council. What is MND?....
REDLINE PLUMBING
June is The Motor Neurone Disease Local • Recommended • Reliable Association’s Awareness month and still there is a lot to learn about this debilitating For all your plumbing needs disease. Many people aren’t aware of the Call Graham Ivey on disease and mention the words MND and a common response is “What’s that?” 07792 285936 redlineplumbing45@gmail.com Motor Neurone Disease (MND) is a 77, St Mary’s Road, Cowes, PO31 7ST progressive disease that attacks the motor neurones, or nerves, in the brain and spinal cord. As the motor neurones gradually die, the muscles stop working. This means messages gradually stop reaching muscles, which leads to weakness and wasting. It can affect how a person diagnosed with MND walks, talks, eats, drinks and breathes. It is a rapidly progressive neurodegenerative disease that can affect any adult at any time. Although there is currently no cure, symptoms can be managed to help achieve the best possible quality of life. The Isle of Wight has an established branch of the Motor Neurone Disease Association and their sole aim is to serve and support all those on the Island who are affected by it. This includes people with MND, their carers, family and friends, in fact anyone who has been touched in some way by the disease. Jennie Lewis, Chair of the IOW branch, commented ‘We regularly have between 12-20 people living with MND on the Isle of Wight. Each person has a different set of requirements. The disease can take hold very quickly so we need to react immediately to the changing needs of our local people. Our brilliant team in the Island branch are able to work closely with other professionals on the Island (including very close links with the Earl Mountbatten Hospice) to provide the best possible care and support to help people with MND and their families. The Isle of Wight branch is run entirely by volunteers, many of who have personal experience of the disease and they hold monthly support meetings for people living with MND and their carers. These meetings provide an opportunity to meet with other people living with the disease, and to share experiences and ideas. The branch wants everyone to know about MND and what it means for people and their families so that others will join in the fight for the best standards of care and for more research. If you would like further information about their meetings, or wish to get involved, please email the Chair of the IOW Branch, Jennie Lewis at eandjlewis@aol.com or visit the branch website www.mndiow.org.uk 6
News Report from Town & County Cllr Karl Love - East Cowes. Email: karl.love@iow.gov.uk Facebook: Cllr Karl Love Thank you to everyone who supported me in the recent Local Election Campaign. A huge THANK YOU to the people of East Cowes for voting me in to represent you at County Council. I also want to thank the other candidates who stood for representing the East Cowes Ward. It’s so important to stand up for what you believe and whatever your politics, I will work hard to represent your views. I would also like to thank Louisa Hillard for the work she has done in representing our town during her term of office. I wish Louisa and her family well as new doors open.

Not only is the river view obstructed, pedestrians have to cross dangerous roads to obtain tickets. All of this is set against a background of the floating bridges stealth tax as ticket prices also increase. Many local people are no longer able to afford the crossing, which reduces the towns business potential and creates tensions and anxiety. Summer Solstice If like me you are just getting into the swing of summer but haven’t yet had the chance to fully enjoy the longer, lighter evenings, then I suggest you get your skates on because on Wednesday June 21st its Summer Solstice. Even though this midsummer date is when we get the most daylight of the year, it also marks the time where the days start shortening ahead of winter. The midsummer date is set based on the sun’s tilt towards the sun, which hits its maximum at 23° 26′ and falls between June 20th and June 22nd in the northern hemisphere. The ‘longest’ day of the year marks the middle of summer because the tilt of the Earth’s axis is most aligned with the sun, providing us with the most daylight of the year.

Town Mayor Report for East Cowes From Margaret Webster
(Tel No: 01983 299082 and leave a message for the Mayor)
May has been a very busy month for the Town Council, we have just had our Council elections, and welcome our two new County Councillors, Cllrs Baker-Smith and Cllr Karl Love, Congratulations to them both. The Town Council has also had a change, we welcome Simon Walker back with us, Julia Baker Smith and Bob Packham. We do have projects ongoing that we will need to see completed as soon as possible, we will be working hard as a team to make our Town a place for us all to enjoy and be proud about for generations in the future. We held our Town Annual Meeting on 11th May, when a summary of work carried out last year was reported to residents. We took on a number of extra responsibilities on board in 2016 which will remain a responsibility with us now. Grass cutting & Toilets have come under our remit for their upkeep and maintenance along with our other responsibilities. By the time you read this, hopefully the new Floating Bridge 6 will have overcome its initial teething problems following the launch on the 13th May. It is understood that the IOW card (cheaper trips) will be on sale at Halls Newsagent but we are still pursuing the need for somewhere for residents who are not on the internet to actually gain assistance registering them. Sadly several requests made by the Town Council to assist residents, have fallen on deaf ears!! The decorative lights that have been removed from the Town when Island Roads installed new street lighting are to be replaced. Island Roads have agreed to pay for replacement of these, we look forward to them being reinstated. Sadly removal of Towns street
furniture without consultation with the elected body seems to be the practise. We are actively seeking to change this. The town Council has been successful in their bid to get two defibrillators, one for the Esplanade on the side of the CafĂŠ, and one outside the Town hall. Training on the use of these will take place in June, Staff, Councillors and regular hall users will be amongst the first to receive this training. We are happy to arrange further training for the public if there is enough numbers requesting this, there will be a nominal cost. If you are interested please contact the Clerk. The Blyskawica 75th Celebrations proved very successful and the weekend enjoyable on both sides of the Medina. A big thank you to all those that organised the weekend and to you all for supporting the history of the two Towns, East and West Cowes. Finally I would wish to thank my Council for their hard work throughout 2016/7, wish Cllr Bob Hooper a good retirement but carry on the good work Bob for the Amy White Theatre, we appreciate all you do. Last but not least special thanks to Cllr Peter Lloyd, my deputy, who has supported me this year, it has been a little bumpy year with several problems to deal with. Thanks Pete. This will be my term as Mayor finished but I wish the new Mayor best wishes and my support for the next term. Thank you all for your continued support for the Town Council. Best Wishes Margaret

Prep Work by Lucie Ferguson My body and mind is in a serious state of shock.... I have woken up and realised that the half-year mark is right in front of my eyes. June... yes that’s right I said June is here.... I don’t know where the other 5 months have gone and I don’t have time to look for them right now, as it seems only a few weeks ago that I was making my New Year’s Resolutions.

By this time of the year I should have already info@dazzleexternalcleaning.com dropped two dress sizes, I should be eating more healthily and getting myself beach body ready... and I don’t mean being mistaken for a beached whale lying harpooned on the sandy shores!!!! My feet have been encased for far too long in ankle boots and are so white that they look like I’ve been dipped in a tin of Dulux paint. There is no way they are ready for bejewelled summer sandals just yet. Another important job I need to get working on is my tan as no way can these white bits be put so glaringly on display. I’m a fake tanner as it’s quick, easy and it’s much healthier than sun beds or sunbathing. I hope as you read this, there will be many of you who are nodding your head in agreement and feeling my pain. It’s not that I want to inflict this on others but more that I need to know I am not alone out there in this cruel world, that I won’t be the only one on our sandy beaches that didn’t stick to the New Year’s resolutions I so proudly declared a mere few months ago.

News Report from Town & County Cllr Julia Baker-Smith. Tel 07960146913 Email Julia.baker-smith@iow.gov.uk @juliawhippinghamosborne First of all I would like to thank everyone who turned out to vote in the local elections , for returning me as your Isle of Wight Councillor and allowing me to join the great group of Councillors on East Cowes Town Council. I will continue to work hard for the area and to listen to and represent your views.
the multi-use games area and outdoor gym this should be built by the summer. The final section Saunders way link road is now well underway and really taking shape and of course work continues with wonderful local fundraisers to build a memorial playground for Keziah. Thank you to everyone who has worked so hard to make this a reality.
The turnout in this election was one of the highest in many years in Whippingham and Osborne, with around 200 more people coming out to vote. This engagement with local politics shows how much local people care about East Cowes and Whippingham. I consider myself to be truly lucky to live somewhere with such a great sense of community.
Please get in touch if you have any questions, if you need help with Council matters or have any suggestions you would like me to take forward for the area. For real time updates please follow my Facebook page.
It is now 99 years since women won the right to vote. Suffragettes gave their freedom and often their lives for us to have the right to have a say in how our country is run. While our democracy is far from perfect, and I personally believe we need electoral reform that reflects our modern multi-party system, we all have another chance to vote on the 8th of June for who will represent our Island in Westminster. Whichever candidate you support, please come out again to vote in the General election and use your vote‌ every vote really does count, as we saw in the local elections with wards being won and lost by as little as two votes. We have lots of exciting projects coming to completion over the next few months. The Medina Park minibus arrives this month. With planning permission now granted for 18
