Sharing a home offers a common sense answer to twin challenges facing all communities – finding or keeping a home. BIG Lottery funding has created the opportunity for Islanders to benefit from this simple approach, which has been up and running in other areas for many years. Here, Age UK Isle of Wight is the torchbearer. The charity’s HomeShare project provides a matchmaking service which brings together householders who have spare space and home seekers who are looking for fresh and flexible alternatives to costly rental or purchase. A simple exchange sits at the heart of HomeShare – housing for help. Householders with a spare room and shared facilities open these up for sharers who, in return, provide an agreed amount of assistance every week with routine household tasks (not personal care) and also contribute to living costs. Every home share is different – shaped to the specific needs and expectations of householder and sharer. HomeShare Co-ordinators help them both to negotiate the details of how they will live together, help one another and get along with one another. The Co-ordinators are also responsible for recruiting, thoroughly screening and carefully matching both householders and sharers, for everyone’s peace of mind.

Established schemes, elsewhere in the UK, Europe, and North America where Vermont’s homeshare has been running for 30 years – have proved that home sharing is a good fit for many circumstances. Householders, for instance, may be finding their homes are becoming oversized for their needs – families fly the nest, relationships may have broken down, or support from relatives isn’t an option. Chores may be difficult or simply leaving too little time for enjoyable activities. While downsizing could relieve the pressure, it may also mean departing loved homes and known communities. For home seekers, sharing can provide flexible, short or long-term time-out from rental or purchase. It creates an opportunity to consider options, save for more permanent solutions, wait for social housing to become available (sharing won’t affect ranking on the homefinder register), or even serve out a probationary period for employment before putting down roots. Beyond the obvious practical benefits, home sharing yields many unexpected gains - peace of mind, new friendships, enjoyable company, reduced concerns and the increased happiness that comes from sharing and helping one another out.

To see how it’s already working visit www.homeshareiow.org or catch up with the HomeShare Co-ordinators at various drop-in events over the summer (details on website), or call Age UK IW on 525282.

Welcome to the June issue of Island Magazines and thank you for picking up a copy. Since the last issue we have had some wonderful weather and like many I have been enjoying the great outdoors. The Island looks beautiful bathed in sun and let’s hope these warm days continue.

Picnic and barbecue season is officially here and I’ve been contacted about the amount of litter that has been left after such events. Please either take your rubbish home or find a bin of which there are many about. Nothing looks worse than a beauty spot or beach littered with left over food packets, drink cans, bottles and general waste.

Annual Mayors Town Council Report for 2018 The Town council obtained the funding and had 2 defibrillators installed one outside the Town Hall the other at the Shore Side cafÊ. The Town Councillors received training in their use. Work started on the muga and outdoor gym. Which was named The Morris Barton Play Area and opened in September by his widow Marcia accompanied by some family members. The Town Council became involved with the Keziah play area and Memorial garden and applied for and have been granted the necessary planning permission. We also appointed a solicitor to help with the transfer of the land from Barratt Homes. This took a bit longer than we had hoped, but has now just been completed. Let’s hope that there will be no further delays and the installation can start soon. Now I could write a novel with regard to the Floating Bridge 6 saga and the disastrous effect that its faults and failings are having on our Town. I will just like to inform you that a stakeholders group was formed consisting of a membership from ECTC, CTC, residents, Local Business and engineers. At the third attempt we did manage to get the leader and officers of the IWC to attend a public question and answer session held here at the Town Hall. After some lengthy correspondence with LEP (the floating bridge funders) I have been invited to their finance meeting in June to give a presentation. The Crossways Development proposal was made public by the IWC, consisting of affordable and open market housing with

commercial units including a discount retail supermarket. This proposal met with the disapproval of the public on the grounds of a requirement for extra doctors, school places needed, social division of the town leading to a loss of shops, increase in traffic. It was also felt that the IWC were putting their income gains such as the selling of the land and council tax income, before the needs of East Cowes residents. The Town Council refreshed the Town Crest and took over the large outside public notice board we also upgraded the Town Hall servery area and passed that all Town Hall users will be charged the same hire rates. Following an anti-social / vandalism spree in the town, some of the Parkside Pavilion Youth Club members produced anti vandal posters which were placed at various locations around the town. Many comments were received about the Town Centres wonderful flower displays and our thanks go to Care in the Garden staff for their planting schemes and aftercare of the planters. Some of the other events that took place were the opening of CECAMM by the Countess of Wessex. The IW day, this included an all East Cowes Schools Picnic, as well as entertainment in the Town Centre. (Thanks to the Town Clerk for arranging this). Studio School Students Awards evening, East Cowes Heritage celebrated their 25th anniversary. Red Funnel won their appeal to develop their marshalling areas, later revealing their plans for the redevelopment of their marshalling yards. The demolition of the Trinity Wharf buildings, part of continued over the page

Annual Mayors Town Council Report for 2018 Red Funnels first phase has been completed. group meetings even demo’s all fighting for and promoting the Town. This is what helps The Family Centre revealed their plans to in my opinion to make East Cowes unique. use part of the existing building and along with an extension to provide additional preschool places. The TC received a letter of support for the Umbrella tree from Dame Judi Dench, who is a great supporter of trees. We wait to see how and what the IWC plan to do next with the tree. The Methodist Church has opened a Friday night Youth Club, and the Town Council has given support to the Park Side Pavilion youth club to allow them to continue operating on a Wednesday evening. The Town Councillors were invited to visit Norris Castle and given a presentation by the developers, who wish to turn the castle into a 5 star hotel, with housing in the grounds including 53 houses on the Spring Hill estate with access via the esplanade. Approx. 500 people attended the public consultation held at the Town Hall. Most people being in favour of the refurbishment of the castle into a 5 star hotel and the walled farm development, but were against the Spring Hill development and its access route from the esplanade onto the sites. To finish my report I would like to take the opportunity to thank all of the local volunteers including the Town Councillors, residents and groups who in one way or another have helped East Cowes to be the great Town that it is, by helping in so many ways including litter picks, flower displays and beds from the seafront to the cemetery right up to the top of the town, the organising of events, coffee mornings,

News Report from Town & County Cllr Karl Love - East Cowes. Email: karl.love@iow.gov.uk Facebook: Cllr Karl Love It’s been another interesting and testing month for events in East Cowes. The esplanade pool grass is being cut and the paddling pool being filled ready for your use over the summer period. The Green is going to be made a no parking area and a new shelter erected. The new replacement shelter has now been agreed and quotations are being gathered for it. This is being funded for the s106 funds. It’s taken some time to get the arrangements in place but sometime over this summer the works will start. We want the esplanade green to be a safe place for all to enjoy and new seating is going to be added. I wanted to say that I have met with Southern Water and ascertained the fact, from their perspective about the proposed esplanade access’s to the Norris Castle Development. Southern Water has granted permissions to use the road but not make any alterations to the lay out, as presented to us at the Town consultation. So what you viewed at the consultation was just a speculative outline plan of what it might look like, but, in reality the tree is covered by covenants which protect the green from development. It’s my view that we should uphold this and preserve the green for our towns people to enjoy. It has been agreed by the town council to erect fencing and which pre-dates any planning outline presented by the developer. It’s just over a year since the Floating Bridge was launched and while it is running it’s still not providing the service which we were promised. We are working hard behind the scenes to influence matters. I met recently with the Isle of Wight Council to discuss the new Ferry road traffic scheme and asked for some amendments to it. Once the plan is in 12

the public realm I will share it with you all. I have tried to be constructive and suggested it needs further consultation with our community. I am a member of the Advisory group of the Cowes Harbour Commission which meets to discuss local issues. If you have any issues or concerns about matters relating to the river please let me know. At this stage I don’t have any updates about the river but I have met with some local industries and listened to their concerns. There were lots and I have raised them with the IWC The Studio School is a great asset to our town. I know many local families send their children to West Cowes and other schools but our town and Island really needs a school of this type in order to support regeneration and offer real choices. Many of you have signed the online petition to keep the school open and at the last count it was 12,000 signatures and climbing. The head teacher Mr White said “he was blown away by your support and thanked everyone for their comments. The St George’s day event went literally with a bang. In the next edition I will provide more info about East Cowes 2019 and the events taking place on the 6th to 8th July in commemorating our towns historic links with the Russian Imperial Family. It includes the unavailing of the monument in Jubilee Recreation Ground and a visit from the Minsk Convent Choir Belarus. An exhibition will also take place at Barton Manor. I’m sure we will all be concerned about events relating to GKN and it’s taken over by Melrose. I have raised this issue with county

News Report from Town & County Cllr Karl Love councillors and our MP. It’s not an easy time for the families of those employed in at GKN and I wanted to say to the people employed within GKN how important this world leading manufacturing company is to our town and Island. The people of East Cowes support everyone working within the company and we will do what we can, as a community to encourage the continued relationship with our town and island. I wish you all a great summer and please feel free to contact me or stop me in the street and have a chat.
