Community Spirited Care Agency
About our Care Agency
We are the only private care agency based here in East Cowes and have been established since 2007. We do our own assessment of your needs and set up a care plan that suits and meets your requirements. Our hourly rates are the best and we look after our carers well. We are registered and regulated with CQC and hold a GOOD rating.
If you are interested in what we do in the community and are looking for work, you drive and have the use of a car then please visit our website and tell us why you feel you would be an asset to our lovely team of carers. Alternate weekends and a share of evenings are essential for us. Everything we do is community based and we offer something different. We go into care homes and deliver activities in a group and also take residents out in the community. Our work is not just personal care, we have built our business on social activities in our community.
Giving you the warmth and care of a famuily, with the trust and support of a friend...
Our Mental Wellness, Crafty, Knit & Natter and Adult Youth Groups have been temporarily cancelled until further notice due to the Coronavirus outbreak. We look forward to seeing you all again once isolation is over. Do you know anyone who is isolated and would benefit from having a FREE craft bag from us?
We want people to have a purpose and to feel like they are connected to others and by receiving one of our FREE Craft Bags they are then linking in remotely with our community craft group and we hope that eventually they will come along to our group in East Cowes. We are reaching out to make our community more connected, especially in the difficult times we are currently facing. We also have a few children’s bags... maybe you know a child in hospital or being home schooled? We just need their home details.
Special thanks to
for supporting our community projects

Hello and welcome to the June issue of Island Magazines. We are still in lockdown, but restrictions are lifting gradually, and we are free to spend more time outdoors exercising while enjoying the beach, countryside and parks etc. but we must stick to the 2 metre social distancing rule. Times are hard for many at the moment, especially charities, and on page 4 you will find how you can help the Isle of Wight Cats Protection and their fluffy little guests. There are so many ways in which you can help. To keep your mind active take time out and enjoy our puzzle section on pages 10, 11 and 12 and find the answers to last month’s puzzles. Since being on lockdown I have been baking more than normal and one of my favourite guilty pleasures is ginger biscuits. Forget shop brought as these are so easy to make and they taste amazing - see the recipe on page 13 and please feel free to email me how you got on and some pictures. This month’s front cover picture really caught my attention and you can find more details on page 9. Inside you will find the usual news reports from local Councillors, features and articles and of course some great advertisers who are offering a wide range of services. I hope you all have a great month and although this issue is online only, the July issue will be back in print and available to collect from distributors across the island. Take care and stay safe.

Please Help... Kitten Food and Litter Appeal Five weeks ago in the middle of lockdown staff at the Isle of Wight Cat’s Protection arrived at the centre to find seven kittens without a mother in a cardboard box in the carpark. They were all very underweight and were only around four weeks old. The smallest weighed only 306g. The centre staff took them home and have been hand rearing them. It was an up and down journey as the littlest suffered from dehydration and she very nearly didn’t make it. She needed hourly feeds but she pulled through. Today, they are now all fluffy, bouncy and lively eight week old kittens!! Tearing about the house playing. They are all eating kitten food and are all using their litter trays which is amazing. Of course, this means that the centre are getting through a lot of kitten food and litter. Combined with all the other kittens in foster they are currently dishing out a staggering 68 meals a day to ensure these little fluffballs have full bellies and never feel hungry Please, please help them by donating kitten food and litter or money donations. They have a drop off point outside their main gate which is monitored and for those that can’t get out to the centre they also have an updated Amazon wish list if you would like to donate that way: https://www.amazon.co.uk/hz/wishlist/ls/4Q6UKAO2H7GN or donate via justgiving.com/campaign/IsleofWightAdoptionCentre These and other kittens and cats will be up for adoption shortly so don’t forget to check out their website www.isleofwight.cats.org.uk during June. They will be operating a hands free homing process within strict Covid-19 guidelines.

News Report from Town & County Cllr Karl Love - East Cowes. Email: karl.love@iow.gov.uk Facebook: Cllr Karl Love The sun has been shining and it’s been wonderful to have some soaring temperatures. The sky has never seemed so clear and even the birds and wildlife appear to be excitedly enjoying a much slower pace of life. The people of East Cowes and Whippingham have been wonderful in supporting government lock down guidance during this National pandemic emergency. We pray that the worst has passed but must not become complacent in our efforts to avoid a second wave of this virus. I support the Council as it urges public caution when visiting beaches, esplanades, parks and other community spaces. I urge second homeowners and holiday makers to please stay away as we need to continue to maintain our social distancing and reduce its transition. Play equipment and toilets in East Cowes remain closed at the time of writing. I and the town council considered it not safe to open them given that the toilets are small confined spaces and that the virus can live on hard surfaces. It would be impossible to control the spread of the virus if any of these facilities became infected. Therefore, it is imperative that we stand on the side of caution until we are sure that the dangers posed by this virus has passed. There have been some wonderful creative art projects within the town and especially those that dressed the homes, windows and community areas for VE-Day. Thank you for all the wonderful creations that you made and especially to our town crafters. I tried to bring this into your homes by making some short films which I uploaded 6
to my Facebook page for your enjoyment. I was grateful to the East Cowes Heritage Centre for providing some historical pictures and David Hill along with Agnieszka from the Blyskawica Association who obtained a video from the crew of the Blyskawica. I made several films including some with Reverend Patterson which helped parishioners enjoy the message of Easter. It is so important to try and stay connected and for people to be in touch with other parts of our community. This has been quite a challenge keeping me and many others very busy. Cllr Michael Paler was the main coordinator in operating the East Cowes Covid-19 community support Hub. There are almost 40 community volunteers helping with the tasks required to support those who are and remain self-isolating at home. Together we all played an important part in helping to support and keep people safe and alive. There are also many other volunteers supporting their neighbours, friends and family in the community. A huge effort was made by everyone and a big credit to our community spirits. Words cannot express the gratitude owed for the efforts of our magnificent towns people. In other news, after a concerted effort by many people in making last minute contributions to Isle of Wight Council, Planning Department, the application for Millfield Avenue was rejected. There were a significant number of reasons for that refusal. It is still possible that the developer could appeal the decision. However, I will be following as I always do all planning applications in and around East Cowes. I continued over the page
News Report from Town & County Cllr Karl Love - East Cowes. Email: karl.love@iow.gov.uk Facebook: Cllr Karl Love had hoped to also give you some news about the Frank James Hospital, but this has been delayed due to technical complexities. The Environment Agency has asked me to remind households about the importance of signing up for its free home survey of your properties within the East Cowes flood protection zone. The environment agency will be writing to those people who live along the waters edge stretching from lower Cambridge Road into Albany Road, Castle Street, Ferry Road, Clarence Road and lower York Avenue areas. It is important to take steps to protect your property as the predicted forecast is for rising water levels in the next 20 to 30 years. The environment agency has some funds to help provide defences and this will be important not only to you as residents but to your insurance liability and companies. Please allow them to come and inspect your property from the outside. If you are in rented accommodation, please can you ask your landlord to agree the inspection. It is important that we take action now to prevent flooding of your homes and our town in the future and I will work closely with the Environment Agency, residents and local businesses to ensure the best possible plans and protections are achieved. I have also been working with East Cowes Town Council and community groups to implement a new community and town plan. Sadly, work has had to stop on this until we are in a better position to carry forward after this virus has been contained.
where we hope it will be restored over a period of perhaps months and years. We are very grateful to the boat museum and in particularly Dominic Fontana who was instrumental in helping to recover and restore the Mary Rose. Together we now have the expertise and I feel sure that the restoration will be achieved, and the art displayed for all to enjoy. The propeller and pylon from the Princess Margaret Hovercraft is also safely stored away in East Cowes and we are currently looking for a location to place it on display. It’s height and size make it a more complicated artefact to locate. The stain glass windows which are recovered from the White Heart are safely stored in the Town Hall and we have plans to incorporate them in a design for display in the new community hub. The building works are intended to start in the near future. Finally, I have been in contact with Trinity House who many will remember their lightship on the river medina. We are hoping to bring to our town an artefact from the Eddistone navigation lightship. A large wind vain artefact is under discussion and for it to be loaned to East Cowes Town Council to represent the long history of our towns people relationship with Trinity House and lightships. Thank you to the person who has put up the new union flag on the seafront. My supply of union flags are currently adorning our town in different locations and therefore I was very pleased to see the old union flag replaced. Whilst we were not able to celebrate the events of VE-Day this year, organised by Councillor Michael Paler, we look forward to celebrating next year.
There are 4 community art and heritage projects which I and others have been working on in recent months. The Stigwood Take care all I look forward to seeing you Art carved by Norman Gaches will shortly be moved undercover into the boat museum all in the near future.

Is it safe to come out yet? This month’s front cover star will bring a smile to your face, just like it did to me. I think there are many captions that could fit this photo but I feel that if cows could talk and with nothing but the Coronavirus being in the news they would just want to know ‘Is it safe to come out yet?’ This great shot was taken by Gemma Hobbins who was out on some daily exercise around Newbridge and she just happened to glance up and saw this cute face looking back at her. Thankfully, Gemma was quick enough to grab her camera and get a shot as she flew by on her bike.

Rustic Ginger Biscuits I call these rustic as there is no piping or cutters used and will therefore all be slightly different and you can make them as big or as small as you like. You can easily increase or decrease the quantity of ground ginger used depending on personal taste. The recipe uses 2 teaspoons, but I normally use 3 and a bit as I do like a strong ginger flavour. Ingredients 113g soft brown/golden sugar 100g butter or margarine 2 tablespoons of golden syrup 2 teaspoons of ground ginger 1 teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda 227g self raising flour Heat oven to 190°C. In a saucepan gently stir and warm the butter, syrup and sugar until butter is melted and well mixed. Remove from the heat. Sieve together flour, bicarbonate of soda and ginger and stir into the melted butter, syrup and sugar mix. Form into a soft dough. Place small balls (about 1 teaspoon of mix) onto a greased baking tray. About 12 per tray and flatten slightly. They flatten and spread during baking. Bake for 12 minutes or until the colour is right for ginger biscuits and the top looks slightly rough. Remove from oven and cool slightly on the tray, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely. Enjoy with a nice cup of tea‌.

East Cowes Town Council - Clerks Report As we all continue to find new ways of living and working East Cowes Town Council was heartened by the way the town was still able to commemorate the 75th Anniversary of VE Day last month despite the restrictions. Congratulations to the winners of the best dressed front garden, house front and front window for their very creative entries.
Cllr Michael Paler and Cllr Karl Love have continued to organise and manage the 40 volunteers assisting the East Cowes and Whippingham Community Volunteer Hub support scheme. These wonderful volunteers have dealt with as many as 135 requests each week for essential shopping, collecting prescriptions as well as phoning those who are lonely.
Thank you to everyone who took part. The Mayor and Deputy Mayor also laid wreaths at the War Memorial and Memorial Seat by the Town Hall to mark the occasion. Many thanks also to the VE Day Crafters, who were marvellous in decorating the town, the culmination of a year’s worth of working together.
Anyone needing support can call 823600 or find details on social media https://www.facebook.com/ eastcowestowncoucilcoronasupport.
The incredible efforts of the crew of the Polish ship ORP Blyskawica, saving lives in East Cowes, was remembered on Tuesday 5th May at East Cowes Cemetery, giving thanks for their outstanding gallantry. Due to the ban on public gatherings, sadly this could not be publicised. 14
£700 worth of face shields were donated and delivered to East Cowes via rib by MediShield from Leeon-Solent to help with the project. The Town Council has also successfully applied for a £5000 grant from the Isle of Wight Council under a government scheme for supporting the volunteer scheme. This covers operational costs such as volunteers’ mileage, with all shopping costs being recovered from individual households. continued over the page
East Cowes Town Council - Clerks Report Very mindful of the difficulties some members of the community are facing at this time the Town Council has set aside an emergency fund of £5000 to be used during the pandemic. To date £500 has been donated to each of the Foodbanks in Ryde and Cowes, for the distribution of food parcels in East Cowes, and £500 to Waitrose’s Essential Shopping scheme. At the time of writing small steps are being taken to relax the covid-19 restrictions. Although the town hall, public toilets and play areas remain closed it has been possible to reopen the tennis courts.

Refresh and Update Painting and decorating isn’t just a job to Simon MAC… since first starting in 1980 Simon has come to realise that it is in his blood and this is clearly shown in the high standard finish of his work. His services have been used in private houses, commercial shops, B&B’s, property management companies, estate agents, village halls and even a Dutch barge moored in Bembridge. Simon believes in treating each home or business that he works in with respect, as if it was his own home and believes that preparation is vital, so with all woodwork and walls he always ensures he washes them down using sugar-soap, and all exterior masonry is soft washed by local business, Newgents. No job is too big or small and Simon has many returning customers and here is what a few of them have said about him “Simon is one of the most trustworthy and courteous tradesmen we have dealt with” “He is a quality tradesman who is very reliable and can be counted on to quote for work and give a date when it can be done. He is cheerful and a good communicator, always letting us know what’s going on” “The finished work was excellent, neat and tidy and with great attention to detail and finished on time” “Simon’s work is consistently of a very high standard. He is reliable, polite and courteous. In fact, we would be very reluctant to use another decorator” continued over the page
Simon offers free estimates and has a detailed portfolio of his work along with customer references. He takes great pride in his work and only ever use trade paints, fully endorsing the advice and choice of brands from Brewers Decorators Centre in Newport. He has full public liability insurance and you can follow Simon MAC Painting and Decorating on Facebook for more photos of completed work. If you have a painting or wallpapering project that you are considering, please give Simon a call on 07769 967140 and please see his main advert below.

Mr Robert Moore (Bob) 07.01.43 - 30.04.20 Bob was born and raised in East Cowes, growing up in Meadow Road and was well known throughout the community. One of 3 sons to Jack & Eva Moore (brothers, Peter & John). Leading a full life he joined many organisations including St James’ Church choir with his dad, The Boys Brigade and was a member of the IW Federation Young Farmers Club. He is a life long member of East Cowes Boys Brigade and still has his membership card from 1954 and his belt buckle.
He attended Grange Road Primary School, Denmark Road School, Cowes, then onto Cowes High School and attended college to train in farming and sign writing. Bob married Joyce in May 1964 where they started married life at ‘Shillings Farm’ Carisbrooke, then moved back to East Cowes for a short time, before returning back to farming life at ‘Wittcombe Farm’ Calbourne. East Cowes was always in his blood and they moved back for the final time to bring up their children Dionne, Steven and Christine and surround themselves with family and friends and to see their family extend to 9 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. Bob was well known for playing darts for The White Hart, Vic Bars, Robin Hood and is a life long member of the East Cowes Liberal Club and was known to many as Mr Bob. He never said ‘no’ to a get together with friends and family at BBQ’s which usually ended with a game of cards, quiz’s and singing. Many will remember that he was known when leaving the pub to leave his friends with a riddle ‘Where was the man when he jumped off the bridge?’…
Bob has worked hard all his life at various places including Samuel Whites, Fairy Marine East Cowes , Groves and Gutridge, Saunders Roe and J.C.M shop fitters, painting and decorating, working at Parkhurst Prison in the mid 80s. The last few years were enjoyed tending his garden, growing plants and flowers for friends, family and the nurses at East Cowes Medical Practice. A celebration of his life will be held later on in the year at St-James Church, East Cowes. ‘He liked his drinks strong, and his hand shakes stronger’

Life Before Lockdown!! I am at the stage where I refer to my life ‘before lockdown’ and life ‘during lockdown’… and I am shocked by the changes I have automatically made Let’s go back to ‘life before lockdown’ for a minute - I went about life at quite a fast pace, everything I tackled was at 100mph. My life back then was very structured, planned and did not really have much room for change. I thrived on being busy, running around, completing multiple tasks kept me going, made me feel alive. I didn’t have time to sit down quietly for a cup of coffee, I even found it hard to sit and watch thirty minutes of TV. Basically, I couldn’t sit still, and I couldn’t entertain myself and I found my own company rather boring!!! Added to this I was a terrible worrier, I worried about everything, I worried about things that didn’t need worrying about. Now let’s go back to the 23rd March and Boris’ announcement which immediately sent me (and nearly everyone else) into a state of panic. The first thought I had was what am I going to do for 12 weeks, then I thought about not having an income and then my biggest fear was worrying I was going to catch the virus. I lived in a panic fuelled shell for a little while and I was no longer in control of my own life, or rather that is what I thought!! The first couple of weeks of staying home and worrying about everything were hard and I knew I couldn’t go on like this so something had to change. I remembered something that my friend kept telling me which I had never fully been able to take onboard before. She said “worrying doesn’t actually solve anything, it won’t change the outcome and some things in life just can’t be controlled or changed so why waste your time” (thank you Maggie for these wise words). I thought about this and yes Maggie was right, I needed to ease up and at least try and enjoy the journey as I couldn’t change anything the Government had decided and worrying about the virus wasn’t going to stop it in its tracks. Fast forward 8 weeks and I am still at home. I now potter, I have started growing my own vegetables, planting flowers, baking, and I even sit in the garden and just watch the world go by. I plan meals, and I make time for a coffee and don’t mind sitting quietly, I’ve even found that my own company isn’t as bad as I thought, in fact when I talk to myself I sometimes say some funny things!!! My life has slowed down, and I am a lot less stressed. The only structure to my day is I always get dressed and put on all my make-up. I can while away many hours without actually doing anything… It’s a surreal life we are living in at the moment but myself like thousands of others are getting through it hour by hour, day by day. I’m looking forward to life after ‘lockdown’ and I plan to take my new skills with me and choose to live life at a slower pace and I might even stop and smell the roses. There are different paths to take in life and I was on the rough, pot holed road but now I’m ready to travel down the newly resurfaced road where I can admire the scenery at the same time. At least I feel I can take something positive from this pandemic.
