elcome to the June issue and near enough the halfway point of the year... and what a year it’s been!
Do you feel life is slowly returning to normal with the easing of lockdown? Or are you finding it hard to remember exactly what ‘normal’ life was? There is no doubt that many things have changed in our lives over the last 15 months, some good and some bad. Many people have embraced the time by learning new skills and have seen life through different lenses but how many of these changes are we going to continue with when we completely move out of lockdown. Many of us our re-evaluating what is really important and what isn’t. Local elections are finally over and congratulations to all those that were elected and re-elected. You will all be glad to hear that Councillor Karl Love is continuing with his monthly news report in the magazine and you will find this on pages 6 and 7. We have some great local businesses advertising with us who will appreciate you using their services and please let them know you saw their advert here. The weather hasn’t been brilliant so far but let’s hope that is destined to change. Whether you are sitting indoors while it rains or sitting on the beach soaking up the sun you can enjoy our puzzle section on pages 14 and 15. I hope you have a great June and I look forward to catching up with you again next month.

The Friends of St Mary’s Need Your Help By Lesley Myland Here we are approaching a second summer of challenging circumstances but the Friends of St Mary’s continue to provide a retail service which the staff at the Trust clearly appreciate. They give us a great deal of support and encouragement which helps to keep us going. In spite of being in a rather reduced situation, we are carrying on and planning for opening up a little more widely as soon as we can. We have hopes of re-opening in the Ryde Wellbeing Centre and although it will not be for a while yet, we hope to resume our trolley service to the wards. We know how much this is missed and are working on an ordering service which we hope will bridge the gap in the meantime. The Charity will soon be preparing to ask hospital staff to consider how we can help them again in 2021 from the ‘Friends Fund`. We are pleased to say that we have many donations from patients who have been cared for at St Mary’s during the pandemic crisis and we have been greatly moved by that, but we do need to get fundraising again, particularly as we do not have the range of retail services that we did have supporting our funds. Recently we were overwhelmed by a gesture from a member of St Mary’s pathology staff, Jussna Mateen. She arranged for her colleagues to be able to take home curry dishes made by her family’s restaurant, Spice Central in Cowes. Proceeds from the event which amounted to well over £1,000 were donated to the Friends. The occasion marked the end of Ramadan which is regarded as a charitable month and we were honoured to be included in this way. A huge thank you to Jussna and her family who worked hard to make everything go so well and I can personally say that the food was fantastic! If there is anyone out there who might be able to think of ways to help us like this, please let us know. Our Business Manager, Debs Downer will be pleased to hear from you. You can contact us via email info@fosmiow.co.uk, or telephone 01983 534405 or our website www.fosmiow.co.uk. 4

News Report from Town & County Cllr Karl Love - East Cowes. Email: karl.love@iow.gov.uk Facebook: Cllr Karl Love Thank you to everyone who voted for me and for the other candidates who put their names forward to represent the people of East Cowes, Osborne and Whippingham during the 2021 local elections. I very much enjoyed participating in campaigning and hearing your suggestions and thoughts for the future of our town and Isle of Wight Council. The East Cowes town council is made up of 8 seats and the members will have by the time you read this report, selected a new town mayor and deputy mayor for the next 12 months. In addition to this there are town council committee seats which will be filled including the Facilities, Human Resources and Planning committee. Stephen Hendry and I were elected to represent the people of Osborne and East Cowes at the county council. This report was written prior to the first full Isle of Wight Council meeting on the 26th of May. I will report on this in the next edition of this wonderful magazine. I can say a great deal of effort has gone on behind-the-scenes in trying to form a new administration for Isle of Wight Council and if nothing else the next four years are going to be dynamic, and some might say explosive of new ideas as we move forward out of this epidemic and into a different and bright future.
provide benefits and others simply reinforcement of what already exists. My view, which I communicated to the PFI team, is that East Cowes requires a full highways review looking at on street parking, traffic management flow, long stay parking, electric vehicle charging points and the use of electric scooters/bikes with safe cycling routes. I have had a discussion with our PFI team, and they agree that we should sit down and look at a strategy specifically to address the concerns of the people of East Cowes and I look forward to that conversation. In the meantime, please make sure that you make your comments to the email address above about the RTO consultation. I want to thank everybody for your patience in the resurfacing and highways reconstruction of York Avenue. It has caused a great deal of inconvenience for us all and I was assured by Island Roads that this would provide a long-term solution to improve the road surface.
On a lighter note, if you are an open-air Opera fan ‘Oprah Brava’ is returning to our town this summer presenting two predictions at Albert Cottage on the 9th and 10th of July. Rossini’s The Barber of Seville and Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro will take Now onto the news: I think we were all to the stage. I am informed that tickets are taken slightly by surprise and a bit off guard selling quickly, and this brings our town a by the announcement of the Highways Road very positive arts and culture profile. Tickets Traffic Regulations proposals (RTO). Whilst are available from www.thepriceiswight. I did previously participate in an informal co.uk/events. RTO consultation, it was approximately 16 months ago. I did indicate and inform the In another exciting town cultural event on public of this informal consultation at the the 3rd of July, we welcome the return of time. Now it’s time to make your comments the Grand Duchess Elizabeth Romanov known and this must be done by Friday, the Society who is to hold a service of 18th of June via email to highways-pfi@ thanksgiving to Mark the 40th anniversary iow.gov.uk. Some of the RTO schemes of the canonisation of Saint Grand Duchess which are located all around our town will Elizabeth, a great granddaughter of Her continued over the page
News Report from Cllr Karl Love continued Majesty Queen Victoria. The service will be held at 11 am at the Romanov monument on Jubilee Recreation ground East Cowes where soil brought from Russia where the remains of the imperial family were discovered in woods near Yekaterinburg. This event is to be attended by Her Highness the Princess Olga Romanov who is a direct descendent of Tsar Nicholas Il. In addition, there is to be an important internationally anticipated book launch of ‘Isle and Empire’ Written by historian and author Mr Stefan Roman. This will take place at the East Cowes Town Hall on the 15th July 2021 which will be followed by a three-day exhibition looking at the connection between the Russian Imperial family and the Isle of Wight. This book has a significant focus for our town. More information to follow. Residents of East Cowes will be aware of a planning proposal to be submitted for a second time for Millfield Avenue. We do not have any details of this application at this time other than a letter and drawing posted to residents in the immediate surrounding area. Once I am aware of the planning application, I will ensure that our community is fully informed and can participate in making their comments online directly to the planning application where they can inform planning offices of our feelings, concerns or hopes. Thank you to all those who have made comments about the Certas application at the former garage in York Ave. Somewhat interestingly I am aware that Certas will be putting forward an application to build a fuel Depot at the Whippingham Technology Park. Does it not seem logical that this site which is of a significant size could therefore be best placed to locate their temporary fuel Depot whilst building a new one instead of locating it directly in the centre of a residential area and town? However, I’m sure the residents of Whippingham will have
some comments to make about this application when it is brought forward. We recently remembered those who lost their lives during the Blitz of East Cowes in May 1942 and at other times A short service took place at the East Cowes cemetery on the 5th of May. We will remember our town citizens, the civil defence and civilian services of our island who came to our aid. We remember men of the free French Navy and the crew of the ORP Blyskawica in this 79th remembrance. I’m hoping that we will do something special to mark the 80th anniversary next year. We need to put our thinking caps on and plan an occasion fitting of our town people remembrance and thanksgiving. After four years of failed administration of the floating bridge a rare hope has arrived on the horizon with the change in balance of power from the county council elections. I truly hope that we can move forward with some positive action rather than working in an environment of a Secret Service approach where discussions are held behind closed door. I am receiving some very positive vibes for the very first time which leads me to believe finally, we might be able to move forward. Finally, ‘The Beast Must Die’ has come to our screens and is available on BritBox for those of you who are able to access it. I’m excited to see some of the wonderful Landscapes of our island which will help promote our island as we continue to recover from the epidemic which we have all suffered. East Cowes has gone Elephant mad and they are coming soon! Watch out for more information in the next edition of Island Magazines. 7
Welcome back to Slimming World Groups Local weight-loss expert Julie Benson runs a Slimming World group, supporting people in East Cowes to manage their weight each week. She says: “A stroke is the leading cause of disability but there are ways to reduce your risk of developing the life-threatening condition. Aiming for, or maintaining a healthy weight is one of the best things you can do to reduce the risk of having a stroke. Before I joined Slimming World I wasn’t aware that being overweight is one of the top ten risk factors for stroke and is associated with almost 1 in 5 strokes” “Combined with eating healthily, being active can also help keep the heart healthy, which in turn can help protect against a stroke. In our Slimming World group, we share recipe ideas and talk about the different ways we stay active including making the most of the great outdoors or going for a walk each day. By sharing experiences, celebrating success and talking through challenges members learn about themselves as slimmers, so they can make changes that they really can keep up for life.

IW Trading Standards have a few scams for you to be wary of. • Reports of scam texts and emails purporting to be various mail providers, claiming that you need to pay extra for a package or asking you to click on a link which could install malware onto your device – the companies involved state that they would never contact you in this way (they wouldn’t know your phone number!) and would put a card through the door. • Reports that the National Insurance scam has been using an 01983 number – please don’t believe that just because it appears to be a local number that it is genuine, numbers can be purchased and are frequently cloned. • A message purporting to be from Google to say that your phone has viruses and you have to click the link to repair the problem – Don’t – this is a scam.

• There appears to be an increase in reports of banking texts and some residents are reporting that these messages are being followed up by phone calls stating that there is a fraud on your account, they may even draw your attention to the number they are dialling from – it will be the banks number – again these can be cloned. Hang up do not engage with these criminals and call your bank on a number you have found yourself to ensure that your account is secure. • Lots of reports in the past few weeks about rogue traders. Whether they are looking to carry out work on your property or buy gold or jewellery from you our advice remains the same – Do Not trade on the doorstep you will be conned out of money and if they are carrying out work it is likely to be of poor quality and the price they quote at the beginning will escalate during the process. Remember • Scam texts can be forwarded to 7726 • Scam emails can be forwarded to report@phishing.gov.uk • No cold calling stickers are available by emailing trading.standards@iow.gov.uk
