Dear Readers Welcome to the March issue and thank you for picking up a copy. This months issue is packed with news, information, features and advertisers. Spring is on its way and lets hope the weather improves, as at the time of writing it has turned cold again, but like most people I can cope with the cold as long as the rain stays away!!! Unfortunately we lose an hour of well earned sleep in March as the clocks go forward the last Sunday of the month, this being the 26th but on the other hand we will start to see the lighter evenings which is always something to be cheerful about. There is plenty happening across the Island in March and you will find the ‘Dates for your Diary’ on pages 6 & 7. If you are holding an event in April please let us know the details so we can include it in the next issue and don’t forget the 26th March is also Mothering Sunday, I hope you enjoy this issue and look forward to catching up with you next month.

Swanning Around This month’s front cover picture was taken by Martin Lane a keen amateur photographer and ornithologist. Martin was born in Brading and now lives in Ryde and he spent a lot of his earlier years at Brading Marshes capturing the wonderful wildlife that the Island is renowned for. He once filmed a cuckoo in the nest being fed by reed warblers which became quite a sensation and was used as part of an educational programme within local schools. This picture was taken at the Canoe Lake in Ryde and Martin has truly captured the beauty and grace of this swan as she gently glides through the water on her way to join her companions on the side of the bank. Martin is self-employed and his business, Martin Lane Electrician, takes him all across the island and he always makes sure he has his camera with him, as he never knows what he might come across. You can see more of Martin’s work on Facebook via the public group Isle of Wight Nature and let’s hope we get the opportunity to feature more of his stunning work.

Isle of Memories by Jo Cooper I was born and bred in Binstead, and attended the convent in Ryde but left the Island at the age of 18 seeking the illusive streets that were paved with gold in London. I stayed there for 47 years, and in this time I married a London Policeman, had 2 children and became a swimming teacher and tutor. Upon my return to the Island, I was seeking a new challenge. My late father was an amateur photographer and during my childhood he took plenty of pictures, processing them in the loft at our house in Binstead. I love these photographs, they are full of lovely memories. I decided that I needed to write about them so my children and grandchildren could understand the fun I had as a child growing up on the Isle of Wight. There were so many. The task was daunting. I don’t remember when I decided to put them into a book, but that is what I have done. I saw within each photo a story from my past and now my book is finally complete and aptly named, Isle of Memories. You can purchase a copy of the book, priced at £10 by contacting Jo Cooper on 567874, or go to the Isle of Wight County Press, Ryde Book Shop, Framers, Ryde Historical Society, Isle of Wight Traders in Newport or Amazon.

Town Cllr Karl Love - East Cowes - North Ward. Email lovehilluk@gmail.com Facebook:- Cllr Karl Love It might be cold outside but East Cowes 2017 is certainly starting to heat up early in so many different ways! Norris Castle and Spring Hill - Our town is now firmly in the sights of developers with local consultations begging conducted by Norris Castle owners ‘Uavend’. I was invited along with residents of Newbarn Road to meet with Mr O’Connor, now the owner of the former Spring Hill Convent and Mr Clynt Wellington, a Director of Norris Castle. Mr O’Connor is the developer of Island Harbour and Clynt Wellington is developing Totland Pier and Taymour Castle in Scotland. Town consultation events will be taking place soon so might I encourage you all to participate in this democratic process. I’d like to hear your perspectives?. Red Funnel - I was opposed to Red Funnels ‘plan B’ planning applications, as was the town Business Association and town council. In my view, this plan brings nothing to our town as we will still have traffic queuing up York Ave and fewer jobs in the town. This development could have brought so much more to our town by creating access to the river frontage and allowing the jobs to remain. The Castle Inn sadly closed its doors this month as another town business fails. Our town shop’s rely on your support and that of local workers spending money in town. I’m informed that custom is down for many businesses as a result of the Floating Bridge not being in action. Floating Bridge – I have written to the IOW council expressing a number of concerns 10
about the safety and slippery surface on the grid iron pontoons, at the replacement Launch service. While we accept the bridge has to be replaced, we are now paying for a replacement launch service which has been significantly reduced in operating times! I am also dismayed that County Council has proposed increase charges from £1.00 to £1.50 for foot passenger Floating Bridge crossings! This is unfair with residents now having to pay a disproportionate price, in order support the Islands budget deficit. This will affect businesses on both sides of the river putting them at further risk! On a more positive note, I have been in conversation with Studio School, for students to participate in a school competition, supported by the Town Council, to design a memorial Pendant to celebrate the arrival of the new Floating Bridge. It is intended that these limited edition pendants will mark the occasion with a number of them being presented to users of the Floating Bridge on its inaugural crossing. The pendants will become collectors items as the years pass and recognise the importance of the Bridges link between the people of East Cowes and Cowes. I’m looking forward to seeing the pupils designs and efforts. Building work in Castle Street is well underway and as you can see, it’s a pretty high building. More housing is agreed and is coming on the carpark in Maresfield Rd. In Albany Rd, the former home of the Boat Museum, is to incorporate a proposed hotel on the Barracks site and tower block of housing. Naturally I’m very concerned about the continued housing developments without job creation.
Report from Town Cllr Karl Love continued East Cowes 2019 - The next meeting of the East Cowes 2019 and Royal title is taking place on 2nd March at 6.45 pm, at The Studio School. There is plenty of parking in the school grounds with its entrance via Grange Rd. I’m also pleased to announce that Lin Kemp and I have been in contact with the Hovercraft Museum to try and obtain an artefact from the Princess Margaret Hovercraft which is currently being dismantled. The intention is for the artefact to be erected, as a permanent tribute to our town’s workforce and inventor Sir Christopher Cockerell. Assuming we can pull it off, this will make a fantastic addition to the East Cowes 2019 events. I will keep you informed of the progress. I’m going to need your help with the East Cowes 2019 project so please come along to this meeting. David and Sarah Burdett from The Heritage Centre have been invited to present a pictorial history of our town to help drive us forwards. Esplanade -After just 4 months in office as a councillor, I have managed to have some of the esplanade trees, which overhang the sea wall, cut back. A large tree was deposited on the beach and it became imperative that something was done as the trees presented a real danger to shipping and people walking on the beach. I contacted the Coastguard and used all options to get these trees removed. It’s a small start in addressing the many land slip issues. Sadly, no sign of progress yet in concealing the sandbags yet in Well Road but, I will not give up on them. Please write to island roads and complain about the sandbags as it does not fit with the ‘Sand Banks’ style development being promised for our town!!

Its time to get knitting... Local animal lover and knitter Samantha English needs your help in her mammoth task of supplying blankets to animals in need. She is collecting 6 inch squares or 12/18 inch strips from enthusiastic knitters or crotcheters across the Island which she will sew together into blankets to be sent to animal charities across the UK including ones on the Island. If you are a dab hand with a pair of knitting needles or a crotchet hook and have bits of wool that need using up then please consider helping these rewarding charities. The needy animals aren’t worried about colours or patterns but are just grateful for every square you can do for them. Samantha has set up a Facebook page in which you can contact her to donate squares and strips or you can email her at blanketsofanimals@gmail.com and she will be able to tell you were to drop them off. 12

East Cowes Business Association I am not sure how Debbie manages to get several magazines out each month, I find having to write a single page once a month for a single magazine hard enough. If you are reading this before the 28th February then please come along to join in or to simply cheer on the runners at our annual pancake races which are taking place in Kings Square at 2pm. If you are reading this after the event, we hope you found time to come along and support it and we hope you had a great time doing so. A big thank you to everyone involved. This great community event was sponsored by Turner Brooks Recruitment. www.turnerbrooks. co.uk Taste of India is hosting our AGM on Tuesday 7th March, starting at 6pm. This is open to all existing and potential members, so if you have a business in the PO32 area, or if your business benefits people living in our area, bring along some business cards because you’re invited! There is the official business at the start, essentially three very short reports from the chair, treasurer and secretary (they’ll be very short because none of us like public speaking) followed by an open floor for discussion, then onto some free food and chat (and I’ve been told that there is wine!) ECBA faces many challenges and struggles throughout the year, we’re aware that we don’t and can’t always represent individual views, but for the record, any decision we make is decided by a vote. If you want to be part of that process, quite simply, you need to get on board. Our AGM provides the perfect, no 18
obligation chance for you to see and hear what we’re all about. We’re always keen to try new things and to encourage as much involvement from our members as possible, however, we are aware that not everyone is able to (or wants to) commit to monthly meetings. So we’ve made it even easier to influence your business community. We’re changing the format of our monthly committee meetings in favour of an ‘open for all members’ meeting once a month. We would like to encourage any members who have something to say to take part, raise a question or share an idea as often (or as little) as you wish. All you have to do is let us know you’re coming so we can confirm the venue and turn up. Our meetings are generally on the first Tuesday of each month. Membership is currently £25 a year and offers you a range of member to member discounts. We’re currently looking at producing a full list of these, but they include 15% off any vehicle crossing with Red Funnel throughout the year, 20% off any work undertaken by Real Employment Law Advice (plus a FREE contract review), 20% off standard entry on Friday, Saturday and Sundays to the beautiful Osborne House, 20% off any planning consultancy work undertaken by SJC Planning and others. In addition, we will promote any events, special offers or share any news via our monthly e-newsletter, Twitter, Facebook or within our regular page here, you just have

After the AGM, the next event to look out for is our St Georges Day celebration (although, technically, this is a day early– 22nd April). If you would like to promote your business at this really popular event, we are offering you a free space in Kings Square to give out business cards, flyers or even demonstrations, in return for a free activity of your choice. Please get in contact.
