A very warm welcome to the March issue of Island Magazines and thank you for picking up a copy. It looks set to be a busy month, starting with Shrove Tuesday on the 5th and then Mother’s Day, and don’t forget the clocks go forward one hour on the last Sunday of the month. Although we lose a valuable hour in bed we will start seeing lighter evenings. Our ‘Dates for your Diary’ on pages 6 and 7 are packed full with events happening across the island during March. I always like to give a small mention about the weather but I’m really at a loss of what to say this time except did you enjoy the small scattering of snow we had a few weeks back and do you think we can expect to see more of it like we did in March last year or shall we keep our fingers crossed that the cold weather has been and gone.

East Cowes Town Council - Clerks Report All Town Council meetings are open to the public. If you would like to attend you can choose a daytime or evening meeting. The Facilities, Projects and Events Committee meet on the first Monday of each month at 10am in the Town Hall. The Full Council meetings take place on the third Thursday at 6.30pm either at the Town Hall, or 3 times a year at Queensgate Primary School. The town council hopes that this gives more local people the opportunity to come along to hear about what the council is doing and to ask questions. To find out if there is something of interest to you on the agenda these can be found on the town council website and on display on the notice board outside the town hall prior to the meeting. In January the councillors discussed the hire rates for the Town Hall. It was agreed that the rates should be kept at the current competitive level to retain the existing hirers and encourage more use of the facilities. The current rates of hire are just £10 per hour during the week and £14 per hour at the weekends. Additional charges apply for hirers wishing to use the caretaker’s services or stage. Please contact the facilities officer at the town hall for further information or to make a booking. All sorts of activities take place on a regular basis. You can choose from short mat bowls, badminton, exercise classes, bingo, Zumba or slimming world. Many improvements are planned for the premises. Some redecoration is to commence shortly. A team of volunteers from the Community Service Programme will be helping with this. It has the mutual benefit of providing work and saving money which can in turn be used for other projects. 4

Upgrades are also in hand for the backstage area including toilet facilities and a small kitchen. Further changes will be happening in and around the town hall. In the near future a projector will be installed to project images on to the front of the Town Hall for special events and celebrations. The library will be opening in it’s new location in the town hall on 1st April. Parking continues to be an issue in the town. Councillors are being proactive by setting up a meeting and walkabout with Mark Downer, Parking Enforcement Officer from the Isle of Wight Council to bring areas of concern to his attention. The new Red Funnel car park will be in use by the time you read this. Councillors are also regularly meeting with representatives of Red Funnel about their long term plans. To keep you updated we can report that a new cargo ship capable of carrying 12 lorries will be launched by the end of March with 4 crossings a day Monday to Friday running by the end of May. There will be no evening sailings and there are no plans to bring the Red Jet service to East Cowes. Councillors have also met with a representative of Southern Vectis about the bus services in the town. The good news is that it was noted the size of the town is fast approaching the need for 4 buses per hour instead of the current 3. The results of the recent consultation are currently under consideration. The matters highlighted by those who contributed are being taken account of in drawing up the budget for the coming year.

Life’s too short to wear boring jewellery

Handmade and bespoke are two words that describe some of the beautiful jewellery made by I.H. Jewellery. Based locally, owner Ian found his passion for jewellery making back in 1996 and then spent a few years obtaining diplomas in fine jewellery and stone setting. Ian works mainly in silver but commissions can be produced in 9 and 18 carat gold. He has thrown out the theory that handmade is far too expensive and has made some eye catching silver stud earrings starting at just £16. These will make beautiful gifts for that special someone and throughout his collection of handmade lockets, pendants and rings you will find affordable pieces to suit all budgets. His online shop is open to all for you to browse and if you have a particular item or idea you would like lovingly created then a phone call to Ian is a must. He believes everyone should be able to wear beautiful jewellery and with Mother’s Day coming soon there is no better way to spoil your mum than with a unique piece of jewellery.

Since leaving school I have spent 30 plus years working with people with a wide range of physical and mental health problems, learning difficulties, physical disabilities and those who are generally finding life challenging. I have been practising yoga for 30 years and teaching for almost 20. When working with groups or individuals I take time to determine where they are now, where they want to be and how helping them work through the challenges from A to B. Although everyone is different there are many common themes: people lack awareness of their physical needs, lack self confidence, want to find some ‘peace’ or contentment, want to feel less stressed, get anxious, experience pain (physical and emotional) and lack of sleep to varying degrees. I currently run teacher training courses for yoga teachers, hold regular retreats, run weekly general classes on the Island, carry out regular one2one appointments and teach yoga for recovery for individuals and organisations.

News Report from Town & County Cllr Karl Love continued car and to me this applies to a 3.5 million bridge. It’s not good enough for it to simply and barely limp across the river. It was supposedly designed to operate in all weather conditions and so the story continues. As a good will gesture, the Isle of Wight Council is offering the travel discount card at no cost for the next three months, instead of the usual £2 purchase fee. Whilst it is welcome it does not make up for all the loss of business and distress that has been caused to our community.

I’m pleased to say IWC have backed down from cutting the Cross Solent Hospital Patient transport service which I have been campaigning for with others to protect for many months.

Finally I’m out and about in the town and always happy to chat and discuss local issues. As I started off by saying it’s an incredibly busy time in so many different ways for our community and whist I try to respond quick to emails it’s not always possible.

Politically, the next few years are going to be financially challenging for the Isle of Wight Council. Austerity has cut virtually every public service on our island to the bone but above all else, our health, safety and welfare come first. If you’re feeling unwell or need support please seek out help. Sometimes our own well-being has to come first and putting this off out of the interest for others welfare or because you don’t want to be a burden, might only lead to greater difficulties. Local services are there for everyone to access and use.

I have been asked what is to become of the studio school after it closes! The studio school is on a long-term lease from IWC and there will be much discussion about its possible use in the future. Some of the community discussions and suggestions include, it becoming a community centre and hub but the truth is we do not yet know and nor have I been invited to discuss its future. Once I know more about what is occurring I will inform you but it is a great loss to our town community OPEN FOR BUSINESS Deacons Nursery and young people. I will keep you informed.
