Spring is just around the corner... although the island has taken a battering recently with storm Ciara and storm Dennis the temperatures have been very mild up to this point. For weeks now there have been signs of Spring with daffodils and crocus already in bloom in gardens and hedges. Mothering Sunday is on the 22nd March and don’t forget the clocks always change on the last weekend of March, so this year, that falls on Sunday 29th. With the warmer weather coming soon seasonal businesses will soon be opening their doors to locals and visitors. The island will start coming alive with local events. Our ‘Dates for you Diary’ section on pages 16, 17 and 18 will keep you busy and there is something for everyone including regular community events or one-off social engagements. If you are male and aged between 45 and 85 you are being invited by the Isle of Wight Prostate Cancer Support Group to have a FREE PSA blood test. What could CBD do for you? Cannabidiol is a popular natural remedy used for many common ailments. Better known as CBD, it is extracted from the flowers and leaves of the Cannabis Sativa L. (Industrial hemp) plant. Hemp is grown legally all over the UK and Europe and is grown due to the combination of incredibly strong and versatile fibre, delicious and nutritious seed products and CBD. East Cowes Town Council - Clerks Report The Town Council is thrilled to let readers know that planning permission has been granted for the Community Hub. There is lots of work to do to complete this project, but the result will be a fantastic purpose built space including a new home for the library and meeting rooms for community groups and activities. It will benefit residents well into the future. During February the Town Council welcomed representatives of Age UK and Southern Water to give presentations to the Facilities, Projects and Events Committee. Age UK spoke about the Ambassadors scheme they are running across the island. This provides new opportunities for volunteers to connect with their local community through distributing their quarterly magazine “Living Well”, fund raising and being “eyes and ears” in their area. Copies of “Living Well” are available from the Town Hall. Age UK also provide Social Prescribers who offer support and advice on issues such as mobility & equipment, money worries, health and lifestyle changes, carer support and loneliness. Information is available at the GPs surgery. Southern Water shared information about “Unflushables”. In 2015 they were called out to 23,000 blockages in their region. Their public information campaign seeks to educate people about how to prevent blockages. The problems that are caused by flushing wipes and sanitary products and pouring fat down the sink are considerable. 6
If you are involved with a school or community group that would like to hear the presentation and take part in activities contact www.southernwater. co.uk/the-unflushables. Some of you may have noticed that new CCTV cameras have been installed at the Skate Park and near the toilets and play area on the Esplanade. The Town Council is keen to ensure that these areas are safe for everyone. During office hours they will be monitored from the Town Hall, outside this time they will be remotely monitored. For your information the next Full Council meetings will be held on Thursday 19th March and Thursday 16th April. The Facilities, Projects and Events Committee now meets bi-monthly and the next meeting will be on Thursday 2nd April. All meetings are held in the Town Hall and start at 7.00pm. The agenda is displayed 5 clear days before the meeting on the Town Council notice boards outside the Town Hall, at the Bumblebee Playground and the Parkside Pavilion. It can also be viewed on the website www.eastcowestowncouncil.co.uk

FREE PSA Blood Test Event for men aged between 45 and 85 The Isle of Wight Prostate Cancer Support Group in partnership with the Cowes Masons will be organising another PSA blood test event on Saturday 25th April at Cowes Enterprise College, Crossfield Avenue, Cowes, PO31 8HB To obtain an appointment, it will be necessary to register and book online from 6th March, via our website; www.isleofwightprostatecancersupportgroup.org.uk The PSA event will run from 9.30 am – 4.00 pm and times can be selected that are convenient for each individual, subject to availability. Because we anticipate a large entry early on, we would advise that appointments are made promptly from 6th March, to guarantee a place. Because we realise that not everyone is computer confident and may need help to register online, we are running workshops at Newport and Ryde Libraries where an expert will be on hand to assist with booking for this event. Just come along to the library on these days:Newport Library Friday 6th March 1 – 4 pm or Ryde Library Thursday 12th March 1 – 4 pm With the new statistics recently released by NHS (UK) that over 12,000 men died last year from prostate cancer, we feel it is essential that all men over 50 should be tested and earlier if there is prostate cancer history in the family, or of West Indian or Asian descent. The testing will be conducted by trained phlebotomists taking blood from a vein in the arm, this will be analysed at a hospital laboratory and after a report has been produced by a Urological Consultant, the result will be sent to the person being tested within 7 – 10 working days.
One man dies every 45 minutes in the UK from prostate cancer and it is now the leading cancer found in men but statistics show that if caught in the early stages, treatment is 80% effective.
Don’t delay, get tested right away, since an early diagnosis can greatly improve your chances of successful treatment. For any enquiries email iwpcsg@gmail.com 8

Catching Our Breath By Jessica Garbett Yoga Therapist – Yinspire Yoga Therapy “I’ve been so busy, I just need to catch my breath” How often do we find ourselves saying that or something similar? We live in a society which is increasingly always on, competitive and demanding – even on our quiet Island. Our nervous system hasn’t evolved to handle this pace of life – our threat response system treats the sound of a text message the same way as the roar of an attacking animal, and respond to someone cutting in on us at the traffic lights the same way as a threat on our life.

If you are going to struggle to pay this speak to Jane on the day as they do have a small pot of donations from people who care and support the work they do. Community Spirited understand that people who are experiencing mental health issues have been affected by the cuts, and feel a regular drop in session at Parkside Pavilion will help East Cowes to get talking. They have volunteers who are good at listening. So if you are going through a rough patch maybe through a break up, bereavement or just really struggling come and meet Jane and her small team.

News Report from Town & County Cllr Karl Love - East Cowes. Email: karl.love@iow.gov.uk Facebook: Cllr Karl Love project. The contractors have paid island roads to change the road layout until the work is completed which is expected to be no later than the 13th of March and after which the parking bays will be returned to the original position. Please take great care in and around this area until the works have been completed. If you have any concerns please pop into the Town Hall to discuss them with our town clerk. Welcome to Hose Rhodes Dickson Estate Agents who have moved into premises in Castle Street but sadly I’m sorry to hear that the sweet shop in lower York Avenue has closed. Please try to shop local wherever possible as every penny spent counts at this time of year in keeping our small business open. Some exciting news. East Cowes will be at the very centre of this years Island VE Day celebrations with a grand town procession, our Esplanade taking centre stage for a VE Day picnic and the procession of our towns union flag created by the East Cowes Craft group. The flag has taken many months to create and is the largest hand made crafted flag to be created in Britain to celebrate VE Day. The event is being organised by Cllr Michael Paler in partnership with the East Cowes Community Partnership. The parade will take place on Friday May 8th. The town will be dressed in red, white and blue for the occasion and we hope you will all participate and help to mark this important celebration and commemoration.
David Hill and I have been working on one or two other events for our town during this summer with more information to follow. Our towns Esplanade regeneration group has been split into several small working focus groups which will drive positive changes for the future enjoyment of all. It’s essential to keep the character of the Esplanade as it is, but enhance it for community activity. I’m part of the Esplanade landslip group which has been putting some suggestions forward in addressing this location to firstly tidy the area up and to make small step changes. The long term aim is to remove the landslips. The first step is to try have the fencing removed whist addressing the safety concerns. We are awaiting a response to our proposals from IWC. Another group, the Arts and Culture Group is looking at a project at the other end of the Esplanade near the boat museum and a third group is looking at how to improve the green on which many people use for picnics. There is in fact quite a lot of community work going on in the background which we hope will provide some positive actions in the near future.

Mad as a March Hare
LAWN & ORDER
When looking for inspiration for this month’s front cover, I immediately thought of the saying ‘Mad as a March Hare’ and it was only natural that my first thoughts turned to local ‘Hare Whisperer’ Nick Edwards to use one of his many amazing hare photos. Amongst the hundreds he has taken this one caught my eye and shows the beauty of these wonderful animals.

Many of you will already be aware of how Nick spends his time waiting patiently at various locations across the Island ready to capture the hares in their natural surroundings and we have been very lucky to feature his photos over the last couple of years and I look forward to seeing more of them. Whilst Nick has continued to spend large amounts of his time photographing his favourite fast-moving subject over the last year, he has enjoyed other wildlife and local event photography, including photographing for RNLI media, as part of his station officer role at Cowes Lifeboat. In addition, last autumn, he was awarded the title “Photographer of the Year” by the Royal Society of Biology, had his work included in ten International photo exhibitions around the world and was a contributor to two photo books. One of these books is the local large format “Wight Book”, which has a related photo exhibition featuring the work of all the local photographers involved in the charity-benefitting book project, including Nick, currently showing at the Julia Margaret-Cameron Museum of Photography at Dimbola Lodge, Freshwater Bay (29th Feb – early April).

Community Spirited Care Agency
About our Care Agency
We are the only private care agency based here in East Cowes and have been established since 2007. We do our own assessment of your needs and set up a care plan that suits and meets your requirements. Our hourly rates are the best and we look after our carers well. We are registered and regulated with CQC and hold a GOOD rating.
If you are interested in what we do in the community and are looking for work, you drive and have the use of a car then please visit our website and tell us why you feel you would be an asset to our lovely team of carers. Alternate weekends and a share of evenings are essential for us. Everything we do is community based and we offer something different. We go into care homes and deliver activities in a group and also take residents out in the community. Our work is not just personal care, we have built our business on social activities in our community. Feel free to come and join our Social Interaction Groups and if you are interested in volunteering, please get in touch.
Come and join our Knit, Natter and Craft Group and enjoy a giggle and cuppa every Wednesday.
Come and join in with other like minded people in our fun and friendly Older Persons Youth Club every Thursday. Meet new people and you can also enjoy a bacon sandwich for just £1. NEW Mental Wellness 1.30-3.30 every Tuesday.
We are good at listening and supporting.
All groups are held at the Parkside Pavilion, Vectis Road, East Cowes from 10.30am - 12.30pm and the price is just £2 per person per group. Do you know anyone who is isolated and would benefit from having a craft bag from us? We want people to have a purpose and by linking in with our community group we hope that, eventually they will come along to our groups in East Cowes. We also have 5 children’s bags... maybe you know a child in hospital or being home schooled? We just need their home details.
Special thanks to
for supporting our community project
