You can find details of these events on the ‘Dates for your Diary’ section on pages 18 and 19. We must now keep our fingers crossed for some good weather.

This month we have teamed up with Isle of Wight Cats Protection to find some forever homes for their Senior Kitizens. These mature cats are still so loving and wonderful companions and we had the hard task of choosing just five of them to be the stars of our feature, which you can read on page 13.

News Report from Town & County Cllr Karl Love - East Cowes. Email: karl.love@iow.gov.uk Facebook: Cllr Karl Love A great deal has happened in our town during the last month. The good news is that Central Convenience store appears to have been saved along with our town post office facilities and the Osborne Garage. That’s good news for the 20 or so jobs. It was also a fantastic turnout with some 500 people attending the Norris Castle consultation event. It became very clear at the event that the proposed Esplanade access route was not acceptable to our town people. I have also received lots of communications about this historically and nationally important landscape. I have been meeting and following the development company operations ‘Uavend’ and other investments online. Taymouth Castle in Scotland is another of the developers projects.

which I’m assured we will know more about its future, one way or another, in July. The Esplanade green will see new benches and bollards being erected to prevent parking on the green making it safer for leisure users

Saving the Umbrella tree is a very emotive issue for our towns people. I have been in discussion with IWC trying to find a compromise to felling the Umbrella Tree. We all love the tree very much and the final decision lies with IWC Council. Out towns people have said no to cutting it down with 860 people signing a petition. We are looking for positive solutions. We now await the outcome of a town meeting with invited Council officers. I will keep you informed of In other news I attended a meeting with Island the meeting. Roads this month where I raised several issues regarding the Kingston Link Road. East Cowes Business Association News by Simon Craddock As you’ll no doubt know by now, Valu-4-U has closed its doors for the final time after well over 20 years of trading, due to the reduction in footfall which has been attributed to the floating bridge. The final day of trading in early April was a nonstop day of emotions for Angie and Roger who have been a huge part of our town for many years, and it was nice to see that so many people popped in to say a final farewell to two of the town’s most familiar faces. Angie and Roger now face new challenges and adventures and I would like to thank them for everything they’ve done for our town, and to wish them both the very best for their future and I sincerely hope that East Cowes features in there somewhere along the line. The first draft proposals for the redevelopment on the Norris Castle Estate were finally unveiled to the general public, and opinions seem to be mixed. Generally speaking (from what I could make out) the access to the Grade I grounds seemed to be welcomed in principle, but the level and spread of proposed development on the Estate itself is a concern, but not nearly as much as the proposed access which will lead to an increase in traffic along the Esplanade which is enjoyed by many residents throughout the year. Any positive impact to the local economy is of course welcomed, but this needs to be balanced against the environmental and social costs. We will have to wait and see what the final planning application contains. Our recent AGM (hosted by Olivia at The Lunch Box) was well attended and I am pleased to report that four new members were recruited to the committee! Our first 10

meeting was a little chaotic it has to be said as the venue changed at the last minute (thanks to The Lifeboat for letting us turn up and use a table). Importantly the ideas flowed and there were loads of ideas and suggestions and I am really excited to see what is going to happen over the next 12 months. I cannot wait to get started! One of the suggestions that came from one of our members at the AGM was to hold a short training session on the importance of social media, focussing on how a small business without a big budget for blogs, vlogs and an army of existing followers can make use of Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. I am pleased to report that arrangements are already underway and it is likely that this will take place on a Friday evening over the coming month or so, and be free of charge for any members of ECBA who wish to attend. If you would like to add your name to a reservation list, please contact us by sending an e mail to eastcowesbusinesses@gmail.com. Finally, I would like to say that if you value your local shops, your local high street and your local community, you must make sure you support it by spending money with local services, shops and tradespeople. Every single penny that you spend with local businesses, whether a shop or plumber, electrician or garage, helps to secure jobs and ultimately the health of East Cowes. Who should make a Will? If you care about what happens to your estate after you die, you should make a Will. Without one, the law directs who inherits, so your relatives, friends and favourite charities may get nothing. It is particularly important to make a Will if you are not married. The law does not automatically recognize cohabitants as having the same rights as husbands, wives and civil partners. As a result, even if you have lived together for many years, your cohabitant may be left with nothing if you have not made a Will. A Will is also vital if you have children or dependents who may not be able to care for themselves. Without a Will there could be uncertainty about who will look after or provide for them if you die.

Ian Clark, a Chartered Legal Executive, has joined A J Careless Solicitors. Ian specialises in drafting Wills, lasting Powers of Attorney and assisting Families with the Administration of Estates. Ian can also advise you on how inheritance tax affects your estate on death.

This beautiful swan certainly made a splash and professional photographer Sienna Anderson was lucky enough to be there at the right time and place to capture the moment. Sienna has lived on the Island for 42 years and is still amazed daily at the wonderful flora and fauna that surrounds us. She is always up for a photographic challenge and is at her happiest when she is on the water, capturing sunsets/sunrises and nature. Sienna is a full time photographer and owns her own photography business called Soul Photography, but she also does freelance and runs workshops and courses with Steve at Island Photo Centre.

Senior Kitizens

Island Magazines has got together with the Isle of Wight Cats Protection Adoption Centre to let you know about some of the wonderful senior kitizens who are waiting for their forever home. You will definitely fall in love with these older cats and please don’t let their age put you off. Cats regularly live into their late teens or older these days, so most seniors will have many years of love to give. Older cats are usually more homely and have great personalities making them wonderful companions. Will is a very handsome 8 year old short haired black and white cat. He can be both chilled out and playful and likes to chase string and play with toys and other times like to be quiet and by himself. He doesn’t want to live with other animals and definitely likes the outdoors. Dizzy is a sweet natured independent mature lady. She doesn’t ask for much - a warm bed, yummy food and fuss. She is a 13 year old Tabby who doesn’t want to live with other cats and although a little older she is still young at heart. Dizzy cannot be rehomed to some areas of Ryde or Yarmouth. Maisy is a black and white 14 year old who really just wants her own comfy space in a quiet loving home. She can be very affectionate and loves a gentle stroke now and then. She doesn’t demand much attention but she’ll quite happily come to you when you approach and will purr away. Maisy seems very content to just chill out, so she could possibly be an indoor cat.

Suki loves the company of humans but not other animals. She enjoys being made a fuss of and will happily rub around you but she is not a hugger. Suki is Tabby and white and is a young 10 year old. Her dream home is a nice quite place to relax with a garden to nose around and a comfy armchair for naps. Suki cannot be rehomed in Ryde. Dora is a stunning 16 year old tortoiseshell and white cat. Dora’s owner went in to care, and she misses having a soulmate around. Dora likes pottering about in the garden. She isn’t the world’s biggest lap fan, but will happily follow you about. She has lived with a doggy before so may be ok to do so again.

FOSTER CARERS NEEDED

Do you have a spare room and time to make a difference? Cats Protection is in need of fosterers who can devote some time and love to socialise kittens or care for a cat not ready for adoption. You supply the love and CP will supply the rest and pay for all medical costs. If you are unable to commit to having a cat full time this could be for you? All support and training given (online training) Please call CP if you think you can help.

Town Mayor Report for East Cowes from Peter Lloyd (Tel No: 01983 299082 and leave a message for the Mayor)

Family Centre, Beatrice Avenue: At present East Cowes is unable to meet the required statutory number of preschool places, this is due to a lack of suitable accommodation. With the reduction of services provided by the current East Cowes Family Centre, the opportunity arose to utilise part of the existing building and along with an extension to the building to provide additional accommodation for preschool places. This proposal will mean that; childcare needs are met; joint working with Family Centre, Health visitors and Preschool will support transition into Queensgate Primary School. This would enable; Preschool parents and staff would be able to call on support from Family Centre staff and Health Visitors; a saving on costs; majority of services delivered through the Family Centre able to continue and opportunities to maximise the space to support local families. Value-4-U closed its doors on 5th April. The shop run by Angie and Roger has been part of the East Cowes town centre for 22 years; they have both been very active members of the community helping with numerous events, including Pancake Day, Christmas in the square, helping to arrange entertainment during Cowes Week. Angie has also been very active over the Floating Bridge and its many failings, taking part in protest, doing radio and television interviews and unfortunately they have said that the closure is due to the Floating Bridge by reducing passing trade. I also know that other town centre businesses are also facing difficulties for the same reasons. We wish Angie and Roger every success for their future and thank them for their loyalty and help given freely to the town and its community. Norris Castle: Approx. 500 people attended the public consultation held at the Town Hall, when the proposed development of the 14

castle and the surrounding area were put on display by the developers. There was a mixed response from people, most of you that I spoke to were in favour of Phase one; the refurbishment of the castle and walled farm some welcomed that the public would be able to use parts of the buildings such as the cafĂŠ and restaurant, but against phase two; The Spring Hill development of 57 houses and the use of the esplanade as a route onto the site. The public were able to write down there comments about the proposals. We await the overall results should they ever be given to us. The Esplanade has seen another landslip, nearby to the first slip of 2014. Island Roads have rearranged the barriers and the advice is to keep clear of the area, as it is very dangerous and prone to further movements. The Town Council has agreed to fly the rainbow flag for a two week period during the Islands hosting of the UK Pride 2018. Business news: GKN has been taken over by Melrose. GKN is important to our local economy and a major supporter of the newly opened CECAMM. Melrose I believe is committed not to sell any airplane manufacturing part of GKN until 2023. Wight Shipyard, East Cowes have won a contract to build two high speed ferries for a Mexico ferry operator, this on top of their existing Red Funnel order for a second highspeed ferry and from other companies existing craft orders already on their books. The concern is now, 1. How long will they be able to operate at their present location? 2. How long will it take before the Kingston marine development is completed, to allow the present firms located at Venture Keys to have a seamless transfer to their new purpose build premises as requested?
