G. I. V. E by Holly Maslen

I am based on the Isle of Wight and, on the 28th of March this year, I set up a group on Facebook (for easy accessibility) called Green Island Veg Economy Group, or G.I.V.E for short. The concept is very simple; If you have surplus fruit or veg, which you have grown yourself, then place it on a table outside your house on your Linda Stone has set up her free collect driveway for others to take for free. Having and swap station in Gunville started this group in the Spring there have been lots of seeds and seedlings shared between people living on the Island. In just three weeks G.I.V.E already has over 2000 members, and many people have put seeds and seedlings out for others to use. Being an island, the environment is selfcontained, and I would love for it to become largely self-sufficient too. I have a dream of baskets and boxes of fresh produce on every street around the Island, so that food is available for everyone at no cost. So far, the response has been overwhelming and it has become more than an idea or a dream, it is becoming a reality. My background is in art and, after setting up and running Art Galleries from disused and abandoned buildings here on the Island, I found the art world to be less than satisfying, so in 2018/19 I undertook a large project to combine art with something more meaningful. I collected plastic rubbish from the beaches around the Island, culminating in an exhibition (called Pick Up The Pieces) which displayed my findings, along with documentation on what I had found. G.I.V.E is a follow on from my background in art and wanting to work more closely with the environment in the sense that the idea of beautiful stalls dotted around the Island would not only be visually appealing, but also good for the environment by reducing plastic waste. I am hoping that people will enjoy the concept of G.I.V.E so much that when we all return to work, and food is (possibly) more readily available, everyone will already have directly experienced the benefit of such a system and will work hard to maintain it. Everyone is welcome to join the group. Green Island Veg Economy The Isle of Wight was awarded a UNESCO Biosphere Award in 2019, and I can only see that this will add to the Island’s status as a special environment on the World Map.

Welcome to the May issue. Since the last issue everything has changed with our way of life and in a way that is new to us all. Government Guidelines came into force and isolation, social distancing and staying home has become the new normal. A BIG thank you to the nurses, carers, drivers, shop assistants, posties, refuse collectors, police and many more keyworkers who are out there every day working selflessly for the good of others. Communities have come together, setting up systems where those in isolation, the elderly and the most vulnerable are a top priority, where they are collecting food, prescriptions, providing hot meals and so much more to make their daily life that bit easier. There are many instances where individuals and groups are going above and beyond to help others.

Online groups have formed bringing strangers together (safe distancing at all times) whilst sharing knowledge and enjoying a new hobby. Following Government Guidelines this issue is online only but we hope it won’t be long before we are back to full print and you will be able to pick up a copy from local businesses. Inside this issue you will find local news from Councillors, a bumper puzzle section, some great articles and information and of course our advertisers who once ‘lockdown’ is over will need your help in using their services so their businesses can once again get back on track. I look forward to catching up with you next month, until then please stay safe.

East Cowes Town Council - Clerks Report These are very unusual and unsettling times for everyone. At the time of writing all the Town Council facilities are closed and will be until further notice in accordance with government advice. No Town Council meetings have taken place since 19th March however the Town Council has continued to take decisions communicating with the Clerk and Assistant Clerk (who are working at home) by email and phone to ensure essential matters have been actioned. A record of resolutions they have made can be found on the website on the meetings page. The Town Council has donated funds to the local Food Banks in Ryde and Cowes and to the Essential Shopping Bags scheme that is being supplied and distributed by a local store to those who are vulnerable and in need. Councillors have been pro-active in working with Community Action IW, the IW Council and Age UK Isle of Wight, to put in place the East Cowes and Whippingham Volunteer Support Hub. Cllr Michael Paler and Cllr Karl Love are co-ordinating a team of 30 volunteers covering both East Cowes and Whippingham. They help with requests for shopping, collecting prescriptions from Ryde, Newport and St Marys Hospital. They are also calling people just to see if they are keeping well as there are a large number who are selfisolating or in the shield program in the community. The town’s pharmacies and local businesses have also been working to get medication collected and delivered. If you feel that you might need help, please call 823600 4

and someone will see that you get the help you need or find details on social media https:// www.facebook.com/ eastcowestowncoucilcoronasupport The Town Council website is updated regularly with useful information regarding coronavirus which is posted on the home page www. eastcowestowncouncil.co.uk. As soon as Council meetings can resume information will be available in the usual way on the website and on the 3 town council noticeboards. Apologies that in the last edition it was stated that the paddling pool would to be open by the Easter break. Unfortunately, these plans were overtaken by the coronavirus outbreak and government advice and it is now unlikely that this facility will be reopened this year. Town Council staff continue to make sure that all the recreational facilities are kept locked, safe and clean to protect the community and the children. The Town Map leaflet has been printed and is ready to be distributed across the island when this is permitted. As a mark of our towns respect and gratitude to the NHS and all Key Workers, the Town Hall is lit up in blue and will remain that way until life returns to normal. Stay safe and well.

The Mobile Vets would like to say a very big thank you to all their clients for their understanding during these unprecedented times while they adjusted their services, sometimes on a daily basis. They really appreciate your support as they endeavour to look after your pets and abide by the restrictions setup by the government to help protect the NHS and save Lives. Their reception team are working harder than ever providing their usual efficient service. Their team of dedicated vets and nurses are working together to continue to provide consultations and home visits for essential care, as well as medications, food and out of hours emergency cover to registered clients. Working within the current pandemic restrictions, they are now offering telephone and video consultations and can deliver medication, parasite treatments and food right to your front door. Being mobile just happens to be what they do best! Both the BVA (British Veterinary Association) and RCVS (Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons) have advised vaccinations and neutering can be carried out - where there is a significant benefit to animal welfare over the next 2 months. Therefore, they will be selectively carrying out vaccinations and neutering. Please give them a call to discuss your concerns and they will guide you as to the best course of action. Please bear in mind they will only be carrying out vaccination and neutering after an assessment of risk to both animal/human health and welfare and restrictions under strict social distancing. They are asking all owners to respect their professional judgement and be patient during these unprecedented times. Preventative healthcare is more important than ever so should still be given regularly. Orders can be taken over the phone and delivered direct to your home. Whilst routine procedures have been temporarily postponed, their vets remain committed to providing their usual 24/7 out of hours emergency service for registered clients. Clients can still call: 01983 212999 for emergency assistance.

Watch the Birdie - Front Cover Star This month’s front cover picture is all thanks to Maria Yule who has a love for photography, and she likes nothing more than to be in her garden in Carisbrooke taking pictures of the many species of birds that visit. This little blue tit is a regular visitor to Maria’s garden along with many other common garden birds. Her garden is filled with trees, flowers and bushes that attract all kinds of wildlife including butterflies and squirrels and she even gets to see birds of prey as they are flying overhead. News Report from Town & County Cllr Karl Love - East Cowes. Email: karl.love@iow.gov.uk Facebook: Cllr Karl Love The people of East Cowes and Whippingham have responded to this Public Health Emergency with overwhelming care and support. Our towns people have been neighbourly, shown compassion and community spirit while being inspirational, creative and respectful to one another during the national guidelines introduced to help keep us all safe. There are many who offered their time to help and support those who are most vulnerable or at risk from infection. Thank you to everyone for your offers of support. There are so many to thank but a special thanks is due to Cllr Paler who is the local coordinator for the East Cowes and Whippingham Community response Hub, our key workers and all those working in whatever way, to help save lives or create inspirational activities and social interaction. We have become a community of artists and crafters who have been working to produce enjoyable pictures and creating art to help lift the mood and spirits of our people. Many residents will not of courses have seen these creations and the many colourful rainbows adorning our homes, streets and shops. It occurs to me that we should gather these items together at a later date and exhibit them in one place for all to see and enjoy as a mark of respect, commemoration and memories of our community spirit. Government responses and guidelines are changing quickly and so it is impossible for me to make specific comments but please, continue to follow the guidelines to help protect your families, friends and the community. Life is quite different

from what it was just a few weeks ago and we have all learned such a lot about ourselves and our environment. There is real fear, and many have shut themselves behind doors to protect themselves and others are relying on family, friends, neighbours and volunteers to support and help them. We are social distancing, exercising and walking like never before. Our planet is breathing cleaner air which is a positive that comes out of enforced lockdown and regulations. For those of you who are taking your daily exercise along the Esplanade you will have noticed that the steel gate has been erected at the far end of the esplanade to protect the safety of pedestrians and those using the beach huts. It was long intended that such a gate will be placed in this location as the road has been closed to vehicles now for several years. In March, I and several other members of the East Cowes Esplanade Project Group met with Island Roads and Isle of Wight Council to discuss some possible solutions and options in removing the unsightly fencing, as a first step to cleaning and opening up the Esplanade landslip area once again. It is clear that there is insufficient funding to remove the landslip, but we can at least try to create something more positive whist looking to a long-term solution. Due to current pandemic our plans are put on hold, but we will continue to strive to find solutions and once this emergency has passed. In other news David Hill and I have been working on the restoration of the Robert Stigwood Art and identify a prominent visual position for it to be placed. The artwork will shortly be coated in protective wood preserver. We need to find someone

News Report from Town & County Cllr Karl Love - East Cowes. Email: karl.love@iow.gov.uk Facebook: Cllr Karl Love 20/00436/FUL Frank James Hospital – with great woodcarving skills to help proposed 4 residential units and associated re-carve a section of the sculptures. I landscaping works have been in contact with Island Roads https://publicaccess.iow.gov.uk/onlineand the Council to try and identify a applications/applicationDetails.do?activeTa suitable location for it to be placed in the b=documents&keyVal=Q6YU5BIQJN200 town. We estimate that we will need to raise something in the region of £5000 to £8000 for the construction of the foundation, restoration and lighting it up of an evening. I am currently involved in four art and town environment projects including the Esplanade renovation, the Stigwood Art, the Hovercraft commemorative propeller and the return to our Island of the Eddystone Weather Vain which will be on permanent loan from Trinity House. FRANK JAMES HOSPITAL - A planning application has been submitted for four additional housing units to be placed on land at the Frank James hospital. You can see the plans by clicking on the at the end of this article. In my view the whole approach to the restoration of the Frank James Hospital site, from its first sale and the outset of works has been fraught and full of difficulties. I have inspected the buildings myself recently and the work I observed was unsatisfactory. Having looked at this new planning application and the proposal and position of the proposed dwelling, I feel that this will detract from the beauty of this listed building and I ask you to make your comments about this planning application directly. Given that progress has been painfully slow and is currently at a stop and reported to be in receivership, I do not believe that this application is appropriate. This application will have an impact upon Adelaide Road and those living opposite the new proposed entrance. Please make your comments as soon as possible to the application.

To date there is no news of the recommendations of Isle of Wight Council in relation to the Millfield Avenue application for the construction of new housing. Nor has there been any further discussion or progression of the Crossways field proposal. Once I hear any further news, I will endeavour to keep you informed. PLEASE DECORATE YOUR HOMES FOR VE-DAY. Our town parade may well have been cancelled, but we can decorate our homes and windows. Our town crafters have created the most magnificent Union Flag which was to be displayed in a parade but sadly that can no longer be done but we can paint our town red white and blue through your crafting and flying Union Flags from windows and gardens. We must remember our fallen and celebrate Victory in Europe Day. Creating your displays will help keep our community spirit going and keep ourselves active and focused. We can find old items of bright disused colours to create displays in our windows and gardens to mark VE-Day. Please enjoy crafting and brighten our town and island on 8th May and During the Bank Holiday Weekend. Thank you to everyone for your support for one another during this national emergency and please do not hesitate to contact me if you need support and information on 07427408928. Support for Island Businesses during the Covid-19 Pandemic by Samantha Smitheram of SFS Accounting Ltd Tel: 01983 653145 There are various schemes to support businesses during this time. I have compiled a list of the main options and a short summary of each. • Business rates - There will be a one-year business rates holiday for all businesses in England in the retail, hospitality & leisure sector. Changes will apply automatically. • £25,000 cash grants for retail, hospitality and leisure - Businesses must have a rateable value between £15,000 and £51,000. Local authorities will write to businesses that meet the criteria. • £10,000 grant for the smallest businesses - Any businesses currently eligible for Small Business Rate Relief (SBBR) or Rural Rate Relief will qualify. Apply for the emergency funding direct from Isle of Wight Council. • Self-employed Income Support - The Government is to pay self-employed people across the UK a taxable grant worth 80% of their average monthly profit. This will be calculated from up to three years of tax filings (if available), and be capped at £2,500 per month. HMRC will contact eligible taxpayers and tell them how to apply. This will not be available until June 2020. • Tax and VAT bills delayed - Payment of key taxes will be automatically deferred to provide businesses with a further potential source of working capital. You may need to cancel direct debit instructions with your bank if direct debits have been set up to pay taxes. • HMRC Time to Pay service - Struggling businesses and self-employed people can ask HMRC for more time to settle tax bills. Decisions will be made case by case. Call the HMRC dedicated helpline on 0800 0159 559. • Hardship fund - A £500 million hardship fund is to be made available through local authorities.

• Coronavirus Business Interruption Loan Scheme - Individual businesses will be able to apply for loans up to a maximum of £5 million. The Government will pay the interest for 12 months and will guarantee 80% of the loan. Any company with a turnover of up to £45 million can apply. • Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme – The Government will cover 80% of the salaries of workers who remain on payroll but are temporarily not working during the coronavirus outbreak, up to a total of £2,500 a month. Employers will submit claims via an online portal. • Statutory sick pay - Any business with fewer than 250 employees will have the cost of providing 14 days of statutory sick pay (per employee) refunded by the government in full. It will also apply from day one rather than the usual day four of illness — even if individuals have no symptoms. • Universal Credit - Self-employed workers can claim income support if they need to self-isolate. • Pay it Forward Crowdfunder and match-funding by Solent LEP - If you are a micro or small business you could access to up to £2,000 in match funding through the Solent LEP’s Crowdfunder’s Pay it Forward scheme. • New 100% government backed loan scheme for small business - businesses will be able to borrow between £2,000 and £50,000 and access the cash within days. Loans will be interest free for the first 12 months, and businesses can apply online through a short and simple form. Community Spirited Care Agency

About our Care Agency

We are the only private care agency based here in East Cowes and have been established since 2007. We do our own assessment of your needs and set up a care plan that suits and meets your requirements. Our hourly rates are the best and we look after our carers well. We are registered and regulated with CQC and hold a GOOD rating.

If you are interested in what we do in the community and are looking for work, you drive and have the use of a car then please visit our website and tell us why you feel you would be an asset to our lovely team of carers. Alternate weekends and a share of evenings are essential for us. Everything we do is community based and we offer something different. We go into care homes and deliver activities in a group and also take residents out in the community. Our work is not just personal care, we have built our business on social activities in our community.

Giving you the warmth and care of a famuily, with the trust and support of a friend...

Our Mental Wellness, Crafty, Knit & Natter and Adult Youth Groups have been temporarily cancelled until further notice due to the Coronavirus outbreak. We look forward to seeing you all again once isolation is over. Do you know anyone who is isolated and would benefit from having a FREE craft bag from us?

We want people to have a purpose and to feel like they are connected to others and by receiving one of our FREE Craft Bags they are then linking in remotely with our community craft group and we hope that eventually they will come along to our group in East Cowes. We are reaching out to make our community more connected, especially in the difficult times we are currently facing. We also have a few children’s bags... maybe you know a child in hospital or being home schooled? We just need their home details.

Special thanks to

for supporting our community projects
