Your Local Community Magazine
Welcome to the November issue of Island Magazines. I don’t have much to say this month on the weather except that it’s been very wet and it feels like it’s rained for weeks!!! Fingers crossed that by the time you read this the rain will have stopped and we’ll get some nice dry crisp days. Remembrance Sunday is on the 10th of November and the month is packed with Christmas Fayres and firework/bonfire events taking place across the island. Our ‘Dates for your Diary’ section on pages 14 and 15 will keep you busy. Please remember that if you are having a firework display in your garden please let your neighbours know so they can ensure their family pets are kept safe and secure. Inside is packed with news and information including an update from The Friends of St Mary’s. There are some great local businesses advertising and please support them by using their services as much as you can.

East Cowes Town Council - Clerks Report Thank you to everyone who responded to the Town Councils Public Consultation last month either on-line or by attending the 2-day consultation sessions at the Town Hall. It is very important to the Town Council to have an opportunity to hear the views of local people. This exercise is used to inform the budget for the following year. Following the positive response, received at the public consultation last year, to the idea of developing a community hub, the Town Council has been looking into how this could be financed. A Public Works Loan, available at very low interest rates to local authorities, could make this a reality. The Community Hub would include a larger library space, a public meeting room which could be hired, ground floor offices and improved public toilets. It would also incorporate a learning zone with computers for public use, space for outside agencies, such as Citizens Advice, debt counselling and others, to provide advice and guidance to the public and councillors surgeries. Initial drawings have been put together to give an impression of what this space could look like. These were on display at the recent public consultation and were well received. As part of the requirements for a public works loan, the Town Council must consult every household in East Cowes. So very soon all residents will receive a leaflet that shows what the building would look like, together with a very short survey, about whether they would support the development of a community hub or not (which would
cost an additional 20p per week on a Council Band D property council tax). Residents can return the form to the Town Hall but need to do so by the deadline set. So please look out for the survey form which will delivered to your household soon. Please keep an eye out for the launch of the new Town Council website which it is hoped will go live this month. We are sure you will agree it is a great improvement on our old website, easier to navigate and more visually appealing. We welcome your comments. During November the following meetings will take place. The Facilities Projects and Events Committee is on Thursday 7th November at 7pm and Full Council Meeting is on Thursday 21st November at 7pm. All meetings now take place in the Town Hall at York Avenue. As always, members of the public are welcome to attend. Agendas are displayed on the notice boards outside the Town Hall and at the Bumblebee Playground as well as on the Council’s website.

The Friends of St Mary’s Hospital Update By Lesley Myland You may have recently heard via various sources about the Friends’ foyer cafe moving to another location within the new outpatients department in the North Hospital. Naturally we are sad about this - we have been serving our customers in the foyer for 32 years. However, our amazing team of volunteers and staff have a very positive approach to this development. We are working hard together to ensure that the Friends’ charity will keep on functioning to support the patients and staff at St Mary’s. We plan to keep our amazing team together as far as we can. We will have a bigger shop and will still be running three cafes. Ward trolley services will still go round daily, sometimes twice daily. So there is still lots to do and we will do our best to maintain our reputation for a caring attitude and good service. In the meantime, here are some of the things we have given grants for, as always with the objective of enhancing care and staff well being. We have provided the maternity unit with 5 relaxing and reclining chairs so that partners can wait in comfort for their new babies to arrive, no matter how long it takes! We are very proud of our contribution of £1500 towards the Memory Room for dementia patients in Colwell Ward. This provides a place to relax and enjoy distraction therapies especially designed to be familiar, calming and absorbing. The room is also used by non dementia patients. Note the twiddlemuffs which were made by Friends volunteers and customers with wool kindly donated by members of the public after an appeal. We gave Children’s Speech and Language Therapy 2 iPads and a range of toys designed to help with speech, attention and listening skills which in turn help with other communication skills. As soon as we are settled in our new home in the North Hospital we hope that all our customers will still come and join us for their cuppa! That way we can continue with this support for the patients and staff at St Mary’s Hospital.

News Report from Town & County Cllr Karl Love - East Cowes. Email: karl.love@iow.gov.uk Facebook: Cllr Karl Love replaced. I will continue to It’s been another busy month with lots happening in Whippingham and East Cowes make suggestions and offer solutions such as taking out a loan and with more to come. repaying this over along a period of time. East Cowes Women’s Institute have been working hard creating a fitting remembrance In early October we experienced some extreme high water events. I was out day tribute to those who fell in all conflicts and about in the town observing and so that we could live the freedoms that we making comments reporting back IWC have today. This year our town arch will take centre stage in the commemorations as and Island Roads. I have asked for a meeting to review the flood defences it will be covered in poppies knitted by the and that some action needs to be taken Women’s Institute of our community. It was disappointing that the slipway James Church on Sunday 10th November boards were not been put in place on this gathering at 10.30am. occasion. During future high tide flooding November the 5th is approaching so please the Esplanade will be closed to all traffic rather than allowing traffic to pass through remember those firework safety messages it as many did creating wash that might and that not all of us find fireworks to be damage properties. I have requested that fun. If you’re using fireworks then please handle them safely. Keep your pets indoors ECTC have the opportunity to review flood defences in light of global warming and and away from fireworks. Please enjoy the consider the impacts which might happen safety of organised charity events is my in our town. advice. David and I attended the Harvest Festival at St Mildred’s Church on 6th October and it was great to see the 200 shoeboxes being wrapped and filled by the community of the Methodist Church, East Cowes for their Christmas gifts contribution to the Rotary Club. These gifts will be sent to Children in Albania, Montenegro, Moldova and Romania. The Kezi’s Kindness continues to bring a smile to young children’s faces and have been working to fill those Christmas Eve Boxes for local children to enjoy.
I continue to oppose the building of the Crossways housing development which brings nothing to our community. I have highlighted to the town council that this development brings no additional resources to our community at all and not a single job. Our schools are virtually full and the building of Crossways could bring potentially upwards of 70 children.
I have been in discussions with our medical practice and the clinical commissioning group about the difficulties in obtaining The Floating Bridge continues to have many appointments, which is replicated across the island, and response times to issues and despite mine and other Local and County Councillors pleas about its poor telephone enquiries. I’m informed that they are training more staff to answer performance and requesting they replace telephones but this will take time. They it continues to fall on deaf ears. There is absolutely no doubt in my mind or anybody remind me that the new system is now to, wherever possible, visit your pharmacist else’s that this Floating Bridge has to be
News Report from Cllr Karl Love continued first. It now takes reception staff on the telephone answering system longer to process calls because they are required to ask questions to best direct you to the most appropriate service. You may, in some cases, no longer be directed directly to a doctor. You might be directed to a triage nurse which is now becoming the new way of working in most GP practices. You may have spotted Well Road has been resurfaced along with many other roads in and around the town. Red funnel are currently working on phase 1 of their transportation hub. Phase 1 is everything inside their own land and they expect to start building the new terminal towards the end of 2020 with completion in 2021, at which time works will commence on redesigning the towns highway network and we are currently in discussions about this. In October a Russian Princess and descendant of the House of Romanov, HH Princess Olga Andreevna Romanov along with Mr and Mrs Kulikovsky-Romanov who travelled from Moscow to lay flowers at the Romanov monument. This was their first visit to East Cowes and our Island which they found to be a moving experience. Members of our community turned out in the pouring rain to welcome them and we owe many thanks to you all for helping make this a special occasion. David Hill planned the event after receiving a request from our friends at the Grand Duchess Elizabeth Romanov Society to enable this to happen. The event will be reported in the Russian Media which helps to raise the profile of our island and town as a tourist destination. Deputy Mayor Michael Paler and Kenneth Beacon presented pictures to the HH and Mr and Mrs Kulikovsky-Romanov. The pictures were of East Cowes and the Imperial Russian yacht, the Standart, serving Emperor Nicholas II and his family in the bay of East Cowes in 1909, which was sadly to be the last time the imperial family visited the island. The monument has been a great success since its unveiling last year. It has already inspired successive Royals to visit our town which raises the profile of East Cowes. I very much hope that you enjoy all that it can bring to our town now and in the future.
