This month our front cover star has got me asking the question ‘are you running to, or from somewhere’!!?? This particular hare was caught mid stride by local photographer Nick Edwards. Many of you will already be aware of Nick’s work and the dedication he has towards photographing local hares, initially to provide data for surveys being conducted by the Isle of Wight Natural History and Archaeological Society. It has now spread beyond our Island’s shores and Nick’s photos of hares are appealing to a wide audience, appearing in several national publications and calendars. You will find him out at dawn and dusk on an almost daily basis patiently awaiting the close approach of his popular photographic subject. Hares aren’t the only topic of Nick’s amazing photography skills and his website www. wightseen.co.uk is home to his collection of pictures of varied subjects captured here on our beautiful Island. His prints are also available to purchase via Available Light Gallery in St Thomas Square, Newport.
All of Nick’s photographs are amazing but I am particularly drawn to his hares as there is something captivating and mystical about them. We were lucky enough to feature For a caring and compassionate service one of his pictures on 40 Place Road, Cowes. Welcome to the October issue of Island Magazines and you are probably, like me, wondering where the time has gone and how could we be in Autumn already! The weather has changed recently and you can feel the chill in the air especially early morning and in the evening although we have still had some nice sunny days. If you are a dog owner you’ll be pleased to know that from the 1st October our little furry four legged friends can once again play on the beaches that were out of bounds to them during the summer season. I know my own little dog Alfie, will be excited by this news. October is a bit quieter on the events side than previous months but there is still plenty happening across the Island and you can find all the information in our ‘Dates for your Diary’ section on pages 12 and 13. If you have an event happening please feel free to email the details for inclusion in future issues.

News Report from Town & County Cllr Karl Love - East Cowes. Email: karl.love@iow.gov.uk Facebook: Cllr Karl Love Peter Lloyd sends his apologies for not supplying a council report this month as he has recently moved house and is very busy and I will therefore cover Town Council news this month. The Women’s Institute of East Cowes were incredibly busy creating Commemoration Wreaths to put on display in local shops and organising a parade marking the 100 years of Women getting the vote. It was a great town event supported by women from all over the island. It’s hoped that an exhibition of the wreaths will be exhibited in our town for the 2019 Anniversary events. The East Cowes 2019 team have been in conversation with an island events company and we are looking to work together to deliver a celebration event on the esplanade. The 2019 events are now starting to take shape and our new look Esplanade is set to be centre stage. We have discussed some very interesting possibilities including bringing into play the 2019 Jubilee Recreation ground for events now that it has power available to use. We also discussed having some entertainment events on the East Cowes Esplanade during Cowes week. Our towns future looks brighter if we can just make it work for us. The Esplanade has undergone a transformation this summer with new street furniture now in place. The planning for this has actually been in development for the last three years. It is funded through the use of S106 funding. The funding is given to our community to mitigate against the disruption caused by developers during their building works. So it’s not Council or tax payers money. In these difficult financial times it brings a little extra bit of community 4
feel good factor, to our town. I know not everyone will appreciate that it is no longer possible to park on the esplanade green but it was never a car park and now is a safe space for families to enjoy. The work includes the resurfacing of the upper tennis court with new nets and fencing. A new shelter to replace the one burnt down several years ago, bollards and seating to keep it safe. It was only after the loss of the shelter that parking started to occur on the green. The new benches are already being used by local people and it also sets out the boundaries of the land gifted to the people of East Cowes for recreational use and is within a conservation area. We have had a few problems with the paddling pool this year but we hope it is now sorted with equipment to vacuum the leaves and grit from it. It’s a fantastic pool and one of the few remaining on our island which we all want to keep open. It’s free to use at source but it’s not free as we all pay for it as a part of our local town precepts. Please help keep it this way by reporting any suspicious behaviours that cause damage to it. In other news, there is still nothing to report about the Norris Castle and Spring Hill developers. It’s the same for the Victoria Quay, and Kingston Marine Park development. A great deal has been stated about these schemes by developers and we are still waiting! I will keep you informed as events unfold. Kingston Marine Park is on hold! Consent was removed to dredge the river to create deep water access which was promised by this administration to support our much needed high value Marine industries. There is still hope for progress but let’s face it, continued over the page
News Report from Town & County Cllr Karl Love - East Cowes. Email: karl.love@iow.gov.uk Facebook: Cllr Karl Love it does not reflect well on our County Council abilities to deliver on its promised local regeneration and especially when set alongside the Floating Bridge fiasco. We will keep you informed of information as they unfold. Facebook users you can follow me Cllr Karl Love online where I will try to keep you informed. Please be assured I am closely following all our towns events but there are such a lot of them. Wight Fibre are currently laying cables in and around our communities as they prepare to offer Island residents super fast internet connectivity speeds. They say most homes will have access to it but some might not. There is going to be some disruption as roads and pavements have to be dug up to lay the new fibre optic cables. The Local Government Boundary Commission for England has now published its proposals for revised ward boundaries on our island. East Cowes remains the same but there are proposed changes for the Whippingham and Osborne Ward. They also propose major changes to other island wards which has sent a shiver through some County Councillors and Constituents. The proposal is • 39 councillors • 37 single member wards • 1 [new] two member ward It’s a significant change to existing boundaries and the suggestion presented to the boundary commission in the iwc proposal. You can find the details here and have your say. https://consultation.lgbce.org.uk// node/12655
Keziah’s Memorial Garden project has been ongoing for many months. It is inspired out of tragedy but it brings hope and kindness. The Garden will be opened on the 1st October. It’s another real community achievement bringing our community together showing off the very best of our humanity and that’s what our town strives to achieve. The garden will grow and change over the years and bring pleasure to many children and families. I’m sure you will all be aware of the East Cowes Town Council, Councillor vacancy as a result of Julia Baker-Smiths resignation. An election is not going to be called because there was insufficient numbers of residents requesting it. The IWC elections officer has given the East Cowes Town Council permission to fill this post by means of Co-option. This means the vacancy can be advertised in the local press for any interested parties to put themselves forward to be considered for the position. If you would like to apply please contact our town clerk at the Town Hall for more information. I would encourage people to apply who want to help engage directly with local issues and communities and drive our busy agenda forward. We have monthly meetings and occasional secondary meetings to deal with staffing, or our community assets. Our town council is very non political in my view. Please don’t hesitate to apply. Finally the The East Cowes RNLI shop, located at East Cowes Marina, is currently looking to recruit new volunteers to help run its shop and support fundraising. Please pop in and have a chat with them if you might be able to help them out. There is such a lot I could have talked about in our town and I feel our future prospects are strong and improving. 5

Diary of a Yoga Journey I’ve started on a journey... I’ve been wanting to take this journey for years and I am always mumbling my favourite mantra ‘I really want to learn yoga’. I normally say it most when things in my life aren’t going to plan which in my case is when I am feeling unwell and stressed. I have been suffering from back pain, I’m not alone in this common complaint but something changed this day and I finally pulled my finger out and have done something about it – I did some research, I asked around, and then I made the phone call to a friend of a friend who is a yoga teacher and there ladies and gentleman is how I have taken the first steps on my journey. We have discussed what I want from yoga, how I envisage it fitting in my life, my goals and much more. I have opted for one to one lessons and this is down to my own personal preference as I don’t feel ready to attend a class with others just yet, but never say never! My instructor Nickie Short is going to be by my side every step of the way and already I have learnt some new tools to help me manage and deal with everyday stresses. I have so far experienced how to connect and encourage my body to relax whilst being aware of my breathing and learning how to control it for a better quality of breath. Simple stretches for the lower back and learning how to synchronise breath and movement will help me with the back pain. We also covered awareness of posture and how being aware of my feet and waking them up can improve posture and balance.

I have always found working as part of a team works well for me. At the end of the day many heads are better than one, especially if you have a problem needing to be solved. Hearing a different way of doing things, gives food for thought and solving problems becomes easier, you can share and do not have to carry the burden on your own. The traffic lights between the Co-op and Waitrose are a very busy set of lights so please be careful, if the lights are red make sure you wait for the signal to cross. Stop, look and listen, taking care on the uneven surface. The pedestrian crossing at the Prince of Wales also needs extra care when crossing. I was half way across the other day and a car coming up from the town nearly caught me as he sped pass.

Parking on pavements, do you find this as annoying as I do? I understand, to a point, e.g. when someone is picking up an elderly person, carrying the shopping inside, these are quick stopovers. If legal as part of a permit allowing parking, the pavement is usually wide enough for pedestrians to walk by. I do not understand when cars/vans park partially on road and pavement often for a very long time obstructing pedestrians walking on the pavement, even worse, when pushing pushchairs or walking hand in hand with children. Is it right that pedestrians have to take to the road? I think not. This is something that needs investigating further as it is dangerous, life threatening and inconsiderate.
